• In Windows 8, can you use a different default browser for Metro/WinRT apps than for normal desktop apps?

  I'm playing with the windows 8 consumer preview, and one thing I've noticed is that by default the metro/winRT apps respect my choice of Chrome as my default browser. That's probably a good thing for the default, out of the box behavior for Windows. However, what I'm finding as I play with the preview is that, when I'm using a metro/WinRT/tiled app (and only when I'm using one of these apps) I would prefer internet links opened from within those apps use the metro version of Internet Explorer. This issue isn't so much that I like IE here as it is the experience transitioning between the metro world and the desktop world is jarring. I want to limit the transitions. Perhaps when the metro version of firefox is released I might prefer it instead. The point is that I want a different default browser setting for the WinRT stuff than I do for the legacy desktop stuff. Is this possible?

• How can I prevent my volume from changing when initiating a Skype call?

  I already know about the option in Control Panel Sound Communications, so please don't bother pointing me there. I am using the Skype Modern UI app and whenever I start a call, it lowers the volume of anything else that I have active. How can I resolve this issue? Also, not sure if this is related, but any Modern UI music apps also lower their own volume when they are not in the foreground. • What is the command to check if a command's results mention OK?

  Alright, so I was playing around with changing MTU size and wanted to make a batch file to automatically lower it and then raise it later. This is probably simple, but I just can't figure it out. Point is, is there a way to run a command, which would normally echo out "ok" but check to see if it does say ok? And if it doesn't say ok then, to end the rest of the file from running and exit out. The command I'm using is netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=386 store=persistent which, as I mentioned above prints out an OK. I just want to check if it did run correctly, and if not, then do __

• No digital audio output with Asus Xonar DG

  I've purchased an Asus Xonar DG as replacement for faulty onboard audio in a Medion 8822 as it has an optical output which is all I really need to feed my HTPC. I uninstalled the previous drivers/devices, switched the PC off, inserted the Asus card, powered up, disabled the onboard audio in the BIOS, then installed the driver that came on the CD (same version as on Asus' website as of today) and everything went perfectly - no errors. I set the audio devices up in Windows and in the Asus utility (SPDIF enabled, 6-ch audio) as I would expect to see them work, but the only thing is I have no digital audio from test tones within Windows/the Asus utility, PCM audio or Dolby Digital from DVD. Analogue audio is fine. I've uninstalled things and reinstalled a couple of times now, as well as trying almost all combinations of analogue/digital outputs but can't get it sorted. Does anyone have any tips on how to get this working? This card has just been released so there isn't much out there to go on. Notes: The light on the toslink port is lit. OS is Vista 32-bit SP2 and all up to date, pretty much a fresh install with almost no 3rd party applications installed This page seems to suggest that a digital output device in Windows is not needed with Xonar cards as it was with the previous Realtek so I have it set to Analog. • ASUS EAH5450 Graphics Card (ATI Radeon HD5450 - 1 GB DDR3) on Windows 2003? Anybody got it to work?

  Hi all! I've just bought an ASUS EAH5450 Graphics Card (ATI Radeon HD5450, 1 GB DDR3) for my main system, but I haven't been able to make it work under Windows 2003 (my OS in that system). When I plugged the card, I got a couple of "installing drivers" prompt for things such as "ATI High Definition Audio Device" that got themselves sorted out of the Internet, and then a "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter". The CD that came with the card installs something called "ATI Catalyst Install Manager" and .net 2.0, but no drivers. I've downloaded the latest (WinXP 32bits) drivers from ATI, and the experience is the same: I don't get any drivers installed. My Motherboard is an ASUS A8N-SLI with nVidia nForce 4 chipset (for an Athlon 64X2, somewhat old), but my previous card was an ATi Radeon X700, so it's been working with ATI cards before. On POST, during boot I see a "Display Card" Device (Vendor ID 1002-68F9-0300) and a "Multimedia Device" (1002-AA68-0403), and when viewing the properties of the "Standard VGA", they match the device ID. Any hints? I'd really hate having to get rid of the card, and I'm sure it's not that strange what I'm trying to do...

  I have a lenovo z570, and i installed ubuntu 12.04 alongside with my windows 7. Recently all my games ive been playing, stop responding due to a AppCrash. I searched it on google and they said it had something to do with ubuntu. So i deleted the partition. After restarting my laptop i get the: unknown filesystem grub rescue error.   Hi, As I'm going to change the network configuration of a remote server, I was thinking of some security mechanisms to protect me from accidentally loosing control on the server. The level-0 protection I'm using is a scheduled system reboot: # at now+x minutes > reboot > ctrl+D where x is the delay before reboot. While this works relatevly well for very simple tasks like playing with iptables this method has at least two drawbacks: It's not very reactive, ie a connectivity problem should be detected automatically if for example an automatic remote ssh command fails does not work anymore for x seconds. It can obviously not work if one need to modify some configuration files and then reboot to test the changes. Are you guys using some tool for the second point ? I would love to have something able to revert the system configuration in a previously known stable state if I can't join the server X minutes after reboot. Thanks!

• Virtualization and best hardware sharing scenario for me

  Hello, Following this thread on super user, I now want to start installing all my vm on the hardware. As a remainder, i have a (powerful enough) server on which i want to install 3 OS: there is a debian (general dev testbed purposes), an ipcop (network control/firewall) and a freenas (local network file sharing). I'm wondering which scenario would be the best for me and if I will be able to share the hardware to do what i want; either a - install an hypervisor like the free vmware esx and all three vms in it, or b - install debian, and the other two running inside it with virtual box My need being that: the ipcop should handle all network traffic to the internet, meaning all traffic from my main computer but also all traffic from the other two vm the freenas shares should be accessible from the other two vm and my main computer too i don't really care about the debian access, i only need to access it from my main computer, not the other vms Will I need to install additionnal network cards for each vm or can they all share the same one happily ? (right now I have two, one linking the server to my router [which only ipcop is gonna use] and one linking it to my switch [which i would like all three to use]) As for harddrives, I was going to use 1 harddrive cut in 3 partitions to install all three OSes, then add to that the freenas drives, will it be correct ? • Starting and stopping X11 and LXDE from command line

  I have a Raspberry Pi with Debian Wheezy (Raspbian) and so far I've managed to learn quite a lot about Linux just playing around, but I have a few questions for all you seasoned Linux pros out there. 1) From command line, if I execute startx, X11 will launch followed by LXDE. If I had a monitor connected, I'm imagining I would see a transition from command line to the desktop environment. Can I launch X11 first with x, then start LXDE on top of X11 afterwards with /etc/init.d/lxdm start (is this correct?) and get to the same result as startx? 2) Instead, let's say I executed /etc/init.d/lxdm start alone, would X11 start automatically (since LXDE relies on X11)? 3) From desktop, if I CTRL+ALT+F1 to get back to command line, then I should be able to shutdown LXDE using /etc/init.d/lxdm stop. Does X11 automatically close with the termination of LXDE? 4) What is the proper/safe way to shutdown X11? Thanks

• Best way to rip DVD movies to ISO files

  I'm trying to backup my DVD collection. I have Handbrake, and will eventually experiment with the best settings to use. For now, I'd like to backup the DVD's to ISO files, that i can mount and then use Handbrake on later, or burn back on to DVD should the original get damaged. I have a WD TV box that is capable of playing ISO files also. What's the best program for doing this? I'm not so much concerned with file size.

• 1080p playback on external monitor

  My system (netbook) specs: 1.6 GHz dual core atom N2600 2 GB DDR3 RAM Integrated GMA3600 GPU Win 7 Professional 32 Bit Daum Pot Player V-1.5 The issue: I downloaded a 1.33 GB sized 1920 x 1080 HD documentary (file extension: mp4) and it plays without a hitch using pot player. However, when I connected an external display (an LED Full HD 24" monitor) using D-Sub, the video plays fine but the player controls become very unresponsive. For instance, it takes about 40 seconds to exit full screen while playing. I tried: Installed/updated all the latest monitor drivers Updated the VGA drivers for GMA3600 No other programs ran while the video played, with most unwanted services and background processes disabled/killed. CPU usage goes only up to 49% when the video plays Question: What may I do in order to improve the player response/video playback experience? Do I need to play with (or change) Pot Player's default video decoders, etc?

• Help importing video from old Sony digital tape HandyCam

  Some friends gave me their old HandyCam and a bunch of tapes asking me to put them on a DVD. The model is Sony DCR-TVR103 and it records onto Hi8 digital tapes. It has a firewire port also. I am trying to use import function in iMovie on OS X 10.6. Every import though the video is super fast, like playing in fast forward. Ever seen anything like this? How can I import this video? • Ubuntu 12.04 compiz - disable all compiz plugin - empty screen

  A lots of thanks to terdon who spent so many time on this and finally solve the issue. A friend of mine has installed on my new machine Ubuntu 12.04 (I have always been windows user and have no experience with Linux). I started to watch some tutorial about how to make 'Rotated Cube' using 'Compiz',but the cube appears in the form of a list (only two slides). I have thought this could be result of my video cards (only two - one from the processor and one from the motherboard) and they can not support this options. Anyway, I have decided to disable all compiz plugins and options because my friend has set some, and I started to think there is some misunderstanding between the plugins. After, that I got only empty screen(no menu, no icons, anything) and can do nothing. How to fix this? EDIT: When I remove the compiz stuffs (from the console), the menu is shown again. Then I install the compiz again (some of the effect are still not working). After restart or log out/in the menu is hidden again. I suppose that there are some settings that I've broken but they are saved somewhere in the system and remove the compiz do not deleted them and as a result they are activated after compiz is installed again and the PC is restarted?

• Moving my bcd from HDD to SSD - Windows 7

  I have windows 7 installed on my SSD, but the /boot/ and bootmgr are on my hard-drive. I want to move them to my SSD for faster booting times. So i figured that I can fix the problem using the Windows startup repair tool. I made a bootable windows 7 flash drive, and ran Windows startup repair. However, it exits with an error. I also can't see my OS in the list of installed OSs. I then tried fixing via the command prompt with bootrec /fixmbr, bootrec /fixboot, bootrec /rebuildbcd. Bootrec /rebuildbcd finds the OS, but gives me the error "The requested system device cannot be found" when i try fixing it. Does anyone know why this is failing? I read somewhere that the Windows Repair environment doesn't support a flash drive, which is why I'm getting that error. Is this true? Unforunately my dvd drive is playing up so I can't use it to test this.

• Building a Media Center PC with Comcast Cable...?

  Alright - so this might be a stupid question but I've never been all that much into TV. I currently have Comcast cable. I've just got the 'basic' 2-60 package or whatever; I've just always plugged the cable into the back of my TV. I've never had a cable box. Recently, Comcast has been pulling channels off of my line-up. Most recently, the stole the TV Guide channel from me. I'm told this is part of a push to get customers to switch to their digital line-up. But, I'm also told it requires some sort of digital receiver for each TV you've got. I don't want to buy a bunch of these digital receivers and I don't want to pay the monthly rental fee...but I have heard of how awesome media center PCs are and some really cool things they can do. And, I've got loads of PC parts sitting around. So, can someone guide me through this a bit? Are there computer video cards or TV tuners that are going to work with Comcast's digital cable? What kind of price range are we looking at?

• Differing packages between Ubuntu 9.04 and 9.10

  So I've been playing around with VirtualBox and both of the above Ubuntu versions and I've noticed that there are some differences between the available packages when doing a apt-cache search <package>. Some of these I'm sure are obvious, as they potentially only work on their respective systems. But I've noticed specifically several ruby packages differ. So my question is whether or not there's a way to get some of the ruby packages (ruby1.9.1-full for example) which only seem to be available on 9.10 (yup, I did a sudo apt-get update on both 9.10 and 9.04) on my 9.04 system? Is there a way I can just do a kernel upgrade on 9.04, or whatever else may be needed in order to get at these more recent packages?

• Random BSODs on Win7 boot. Can't find a valid reason.

  Hi, I bought and assembled a new pc: ASUS m4a785td-v EVO AMD x4 620 OCZ Black Edition 2x 2gb WD 500gb sata Win7 Ultimate 64bit fresh install BSOD on boot. Formatted, reinstalled, BSOD on install. Ran memtest - no errors. Ran Win7 install in safe mode. Installed, random BSOD on win7 startup, even in safe mode. Updated BIOS. Ran the win7 memtest (no error), booted after some tries and ran Prime95 blend test for 12 hours straight with no errors at all! When the pc has booted, win7 runs as smooth as possible, I've been playing STALKER for 4 hours straight with not a single hiccup. Using Blue Screen View I can see that every BSOD involves: ntoskrnl.exe Here are the dumps Any help would be greatly appreciated, this thing is driving me crazy.

• Bare-metal virtualisation for the desktop

  Hi, Does anyone have any knowledge about bare-metal virtualisation products? I'm interested in building a new desktop machine for home, I've been looking at the Intel Quad Core processors and I'd like to put 8GB of RAM in there, but, it got me thinking about making the most out of the available resources. I thought if I could get a good 64bit machine, put some bare-metal virtualisation on, then have a primary system, I'd also be able to bring up some extra virtualised systems as and when I needed. I know most of the bare metal systems are designed for the server market, but, is there anything out there that works well for a desktop. What are the caveats? I presume I won't be able to make the most out of any video cards I could buy, what about just getting a decent screen resolution, will this be a problem? I run a single 24" screen. What about DVD/CD writing, is this possible? I'd like to re-rip my CD collection, I was hoping the quad 64Bit goodness would help me out with the encoding. I currently use a Mac and couldn't go back to windows so that leaves Linux, I was thinking a primary OS of ubuntu. Does this make a difference? Thanks Andrew

• Why should krfb use so much cpu when I never use it?

  I was playing around with KSysGuard and I noticed the process using the most cpu was krfb, which is the server process for desktop sharing. I never use desktop sharing so I suppose it is a default loaded process. Why would this process use so much juice (around 15%) when I never use it and it really shouldn't be doing much of anything? I don't see any network activity so I don't think I am being hacked. I have suspended the process and nothing bad seems to have happened. Can I assume this is a safe thing to do?

• Getting jerky backgrounds on Win7 on iMac 27'' 2560x1440

  I installed Win7 on bootcamp on my new iMac 27'' (ATI videocard) and everything was good until recently I noticed that the default win7 background (then one on the background on login) looked jerky. When I say jerky I mean the kind of jerky you get if you can't display enough colours, and instead of nice fading shades you just get stripes and jerky patterns. I am on native resolution but even if I go down to 1920x1080 I get the same. This might have happened after a firmware update but as I don't use windows very often I am not too sure it's what caused it. Oh, and when I am playing games everything looks OK (as in not jerky!). Any help appreciated!

Why it's happening, but still I can not resolve this issue. Any ideas on what is happening here?

• Converting DisplayPort and/or HDMI to DVI-D?

  Newer Radeon video cards come with four ports standard: DVI (x2) HDMI DisplayPort If I want to run three 24" monitors, all of which are DVI only, from this video card -- is it possible to convert either the HDMI or DisplayPort to DVI? If so, how? And which one is easier/cheaper to convert? I did a little research and it looks like there isn't a simple "dongle" method. I found this DisplayPort to DVI-D Dual Link Adapter but it's $120; almost cheaper to buy a new monitor that supports HDMI or DisplayPort inputs at that point! There's also a HDMI to DVI-D adapter at Monoprice but I'm not sure it will work, either. AnandTech seems to imply that you do need the DisplayPort-to-DVI: The only catch to this specific port layout is that the card still only has enough TMDS transmitters for two ports. So you can use 2x DVI or 1x DVI + HDMI, but not 2x DVI + HDMI. For 3 DVI-derived ports, you will need an active DisplayPort-to-DVI adapter.
