• dpkg reports error on package icaclient

  I installed the icaclient (it's a client for Citrix) a while back. I don't exactly remember what I did to get it working but it was enervating. I had to install some old packages not even avaiable for ubuntu (12.04) and in the end I used some stuff from old rpms. Anyway the client is more or less working now but I always get a dpkg error when installing or updating something. The (translated) error message is something like: dpkg: Error while processing icaclient:i386 (--configure): subprocess installed post-installation-script return errorcode 2 I just want to tell dpkg to ignore this or remove this post-install-script but I don't know how. • How to create a simple side scroller game

  I'm still pretty new to game programming and any tutorial that I have worked with stuck to only games with the initial screen. I want to start creating my own games but there are a few things that I still need to learn. One of them is how to create a game that side-scrolls. For example; Mario... Or ANY type of game like that... Can anyone give me a small example to create something like that. I'm not asking for any specific language because currently in school I am learning javascript but I know some c++/java/processing/objective-c as well. So any of those languages would be fine and I could probably implement it in any of the others... I have been searching for some help with this for a while now but could never actually get any help on it. Thanks in advance!

  I have a an API running that receives raw binaries, processes them, and then stores metadata about the bins in a mysql database. I have been running it for a couple days on a VM. Today the API stopped processing the mySQL commands. • DRY, string, and unit testing

  I have a recurring question when writing unit tests for code that involves constant string values. Let's take an example of a method/function that does some processing and returns a string containing a pre-defined constant. In python, that would be something like: STRING_TEMPLATE = "/some/constant/string/with/%s/that/needs/interpolation/" def process(some_param): # We do some meaningful work that gives us a value result = _some_meaningful_action() return STRING_TEMPLATE % result If I want to unit test process, one of my tests will check the return value. This is where I wonder what the best solution is. In my unit test, I can: apply DRY and use the already defined constant repeat myself and rewrite the entire string def test_foo_should_return_correct_url(): string_result = process() # Applying DRY and using the already defined constant assert STRING_TEMPLATE % "1234" == string_result # Repeating myself, repeating myself assert "/some/constant/string/with/1234/that/needs/interpolation/" == url The advantage I see in the former is that my test will break if I put the wrong string value in my constant. The inconvenient is that I may be rewriting the same string over and over again across different unit tests.

• Is there a quick way to convert camera raw files to DNG?

  Before I switched from Windows to Ubuntu for my daily computing, I used Adobe's Photoshop Lightroom for processing photos from my DSLR. Adobe made it really straightforward to convert from proprietary camera raw files (in my case, .NEF) to DNG. I haven't found any way to convert NEF to DNG in Ubuntu yet. Most photography programs do process NEFs to JPG/TIFF/PNG/etc., but I'm looking for a converter for archival purposes. Are there any tools available, either standalone or built into another app, that can losslessly convert from NEF to DNG?

• Are VM-based languages becoming viable for Graphics since the move to GPU computing?

  Perhaps the title is not the most clear, so let me elaborate it more: I am talking about VM-based languages, by that I mean languages that run on the JVM (java) and for example C#. Also I am talking about 3D graphics, just to be clear. Lately the trend has been that most computing is being done on the GPU and not on the CPU, and since times the issue with programming games on a VM-based language is that garbage collecting may happen randomly. So let's take a look which is responsible for what: Showing the graphics: GPU Uploading graphics to the GPU: CPU? Needs to be done every frame? Calculating physics constraints: GPU Doing the real game logic (Determining when to move objects (independent of physics calculations), processing AI): CPU Is my list actually correct? And if it is, is for example Java becoming more viable? Or is uploading the graphics (vertices) still the most expensive operation? Would like to get more insight into this.

Try it on iOS6 Safari: Websites like this don't do it: http://html5boilerplate.com But this one does: http://www.initializr.com Something to do with re-processing (CPU lag) to fit a wider screen? It doesn't happen in Chrome for iOS6... Update: I just removed all img and from my testing site, but it still happens. This seems to happen with a lot of different websites out there. Is it a bug with their code, or a Safari for iOS bug? Others are completely immune to it...

Tasks check every minute with a third party application through web services, retrieving data which is written in the database, then the data is forwarded to it's original destination. • Can't upgrade 11.04: flashplugin-nonfree: Package is in very bad, inconsistent state

  I can't upgrade from 11.04. I've disabled all apt sources, but still I get: http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/6680/snmekobrazovkyg.png The only option I am capable doing is to format and reinstall whole system, which I don't prefer as I have tuned a lot of apps settings, etc. How can I fix this? Update: After restart, when trying to update all packages, I get this error: installArchives() failed: dpkg: error processing flashplugin-nonfree (--remove): Package is in very bad, inconsistent state - before trying to remove rather reinstall it. Reinstalling it results in the same error.

• Hadoop:Only master node does the work

  I've setup a Hadoop 2.2 cluster with 1 master node(namenode and secondary namenode) and 3 slave nodes(datanode and namenode on each one).All of the machines use Linux Mint 64bit. When I run my MapReduce program, writen in Java, I can only see that master node is using extra CPU and RAM. Slave nodes are not doing a thing. I've checked the logs from all of the namenodes and there is nothing wrong with the namenodes on slave nodes. Resource Manager is running and all of the slave nodes can see the Resource Manager. I used this http://n0where.net/hadoop-2-2-multi-node-cluster-setup/ tutorial to configure my nodes. Datanodes are working in terms of distributed data storing but I can't see any indication of distributed data processing. Do I have to configure the xml configuration files in some other way so all of the machines will process data while I'm running my MapReduce Job?

• How long till HTML5 canvas becomes a viable game development platform?

  So I have been working on web application. So invariably what it boils down to is making simple games which were previously based on flash or openGL. Now I know apple was moving away from flash because its proprietary unlike their stance that its got "pathetic performance"! Not true, try playing a canvas game, I can assure you at any point of time (including when its idle) it will use up a fair bit of processing power just to redraw the UI. Now I do understand that this is my fault because when the game is not active I should not be redrawing the canvas, but honestly its a lot of work and I suppose there should be libraries which should be able to assist me with that! So, how much will it be before I see a decent canvas library which handles these "tiny" issues for me? I can't honestly expect Steve Jobs to be doing anything more for HTML5! I someone knows of a good library, I am all ears...! :) PS: I use mootools and am presently using Mootools Canvas Library.

• FBO rendering different result between Galaxy S2 and S3

  I'm working on a pong game and have recently set up FBO rendering so that I can apply some post-processing shaders. This proceeds as so: Bind texture A to framebuffer Draw balls Bind texture B to framebuffer Draw texture A using fade shader on fullscreen quad Bind screen to framebuffer Draw texture B using normal textured quad shader Neither texture A or B are cleared at any point, this way the balls leave trails on screen, see below for the fade shader.   In order to use kghostview, I download the page from here. After that, I run the following command: sudo dpkg -i kghostview_3.5.10-0ubuntu1~hardy1.1_i386.deb However, I have the following error messages: dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of kghostview: kghostview depends on gs; however: Package gs is not installed. kghostview depends on kdelibs4c2a (>= 4:3.5.8-1); however: Package kdelibs4c2a is not installed. kghostview depends on libqt3-mt (>= 3:3.3.8-b); however: Package libqt3-mt is not installed. dpkg: error processing kghostview (--install): dependency problems - leaving unconfigured It seems that I should also install some external packages such as gs, kdelibs4c2a and libqt3-mt. However, I do not have any idea of how to install them. I try the sudo apt-get install command, but fail. Any idea will be appreciated.

It builds upon the first milestone and adds several new features such as server-side asynchronous processing, server-side content negotiation, improved JAX-RS parameter injection, and several others. The REST endpoints can be published on Java SE HTTP Server, Grizzly 2 HTTP container, and some basic Servlet-based deployments. It also provides HTTPURLConnection-based client API implementation. • Installing g77 in Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32bit)

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 LTS (32bit-i386) in my desktop PC. I need g77 compiler for some specific applications. The app can only be installed after having g77 compiler. This specific app is designed based on g77 fortran compiler and can't be used with gfortran which is the standard available compiler in 12.04 LTS. And guide me the procedure to install g77 in 12.04. I have been trying apt-get update & apt-get install g77 after changing the sources.list file. After processing I am able to install g77 but when i try to compile a fortran program, it shows error /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crt1.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find crti.o: No such file or directory /usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lgcc_s collect2: ld returned 1 exit status Please help me. I m struggling a lot to fix this.

  So I'm writing a web service architecture which includes FunctionProvider classes which do the actual processing of requests, and a main Endpoint class which receives and delegates requests to the proper FunctionProvider. I don't know exactly the FunctionProviders available at runtime, so I need to be able to 'register' (if that's the right word) them with my main Endpoint class, and query them to see if they match an incoming request. public class MyFunc implements FunctionProvider{ static { MyEndpoint.register(MyFunc); } public Boolean matchesRequest(Request req){...} public void processRequest(Request req){...} } public class MyEndpoint{ private static ArrayList<FunctionProvider> functions = new ArrayList<FunctionProvider>(); public void register(Class clz){ functions.add(clz); } public void doPost(Request request){ //find the FunctionProvider in functions //matching the request } } I've really not done much reflective Java like this (and the above is likely wrong, but hopefully demonstrates my intentions). What's the nicest way to implement this without getting hacky?

  Since it's introduction in Java EE 6, CDI has become a key API for the platform. CDI 1.1 was a relatively minor release included in Java EE 7 as was CDI 1.2 (to be included in GlassFish 4.0.1). We have much higher expectations from CDI 2 (projected to be included in Java EE 8) under the new leadership of Antoine Sabot-Durand. Much like we conducted the Java EE 8 survey to solidify future direction for the platform, CDI 2 is now undergoing the same effort. Towards this goal the CDI 2 leadership is now soliciting feedback on some very specific items via an open survey. Topics include the likes of Java SE bootstrap, asynchronous processing, modularity, EJB-style @Startup and @Asynchronous in CDI, configuration and CDI Lite. • HTTP resource bundling/streaming practice

  Our SPA (plain HTML and Javascript) makes use of huge volume of javascript and other resources that are downloaded via XHR. Given the sheer number of components and browser simultaneous request limits, we're thinking for ways to deliver our resources in a more efficient manner. A method we're considering is bundling several resources that logically form a coherent group into a single file; thus reducing down to only one XHR (per group). Furthermore to make it more responsive, we'd like to constantly inspect the partial responseText during the LOADING state, determining if a usable chunk (atomic resource) has already been downloaded, and make it available for deserialization/processing even before the XHR is DONE. (a stream-like experience) We're thinking surely somebody else would've considered roughly the same approach before, but haven't really come across any library/framework or container file format that is suitable for our scenario. Anybody else know of something similar?

• Optimum Number of Parallel Processes

  I just finished coding a (basic) ray tracer in C# for fun and for the learning experience. Now I want to further that learning experience. It seems to me that ray tracing is a prime candidate for parallel processing, which is something I have very little experience in. My question is this: how do I know the optimum number of concurrent processes to run? My first instinct tells me: it depends on how many cores my processor has, but like I said I'm new to this and I may be neglecting something.
