• Why Does Piping Binary Text to the Screen often Horck a Terminal

    - by Alan Storm
Imaginary Situation: You’ve used mysqldump to create a backup of a mysql database. This database has columns that are blobs. That means your “text” dump files contains both strings and binary data (binary data stored as strings?) If you cat this file to the screen $ cat dump.mysql you’ll often get unexpected results. The terminal will start beeping, and then the output finishes scrolling by you’ll often have garbage chacters entered on your terminal as through you’d typed them, and sometimes your prompts and anything you type will be garbage characters. Why does this happen? Put another way, I think I’m looking for an overview of what’s actually happening when you store binary strings into a file, and when you cat those files, and when the results of the cat are reported to the terminal, and any other steps I’m missing.

  • How do I test if a variable is a number in bash?

    - by Flávio Amieiro
I just can't figure out how do I make sure an argument passed to my script is a number or not. All I want to do is something like this: test *isnumber* $1 && VAR=$1 || echo "need a number" Any help? UPDATE: I managed (whit Charles' help) to do it, but I'm not yet sure it's the best way to do that (even though it worked on my tests). This is how it ended up: [[ $1 =~ "^[0-9]+$" ]] && echo "numero" && exit 0 || echo "nao numero" && exit 1

  • how can I override an anonymous javascript function attached to an eventlistener?

    - by Sid
I found that a website does somewhat sneaky things. When you hover over a link, it shows you the real URL. WHen you click on it, it uses the click/mousedown event to rewrite the URL. I want to override that behaviour in firefox, So I fired up firebug to see what it does. On a mouse click, it executes a function called window.tgs. Easy, I thought. I can override this function. My first attempt was to do get the element via getELementsByTagName(), and then element.removeEventListener("click",window.tgs, false); To my surprise, this did nothing. I tried redefining window.tgs window.tgs = function() { return true; }; that did not do anything either. I am not a JS expert. Your insights appreciated thanks Sid

  • bash command history update before execution of command

    - by Jon
Hi, Bash's command history is great, especially it is useful when adding the history -a command to the COMMAND_PROMPT. However, I'm wondering if there is a way to log the commands to a file as soon as the Return key is pressed, e.g. before starting the command and not on completion of the command (using the COMMAND_PROMPT option would save the command once the prompt is there again). I read about auditing programs like snoopy and session recorder like script but I thought they're already too complex for the simple question I have. I guess that deactivating that script logs all the output of the command would lead already in the right direction but isn't there a quicker way to solve that probelm? Thanks, Jon

  • Extract a correct 16x16 icon assigned to a file?

    - by a-g
    I tied SHGetFileInfo and ExtractIconEx, both return a normal 32x32 icon and 16x16 with only 16 colors, and it looks awful. How do I extract a full color icon? My code SHFILEINFO shinfo = new SHFILEINFO(); IntPtr hImgSmall = SHGetFileInfo(fileName, 0, ref shinfo, (uint)Marshal.SizeOf(shinfo), SHGFI_ICON | SHGFI_SMALLICON); Icon icon = (Icon)System.Drawing.Icon.FromHandle(shinfo.hIcon).Clone(); DestroyIcon(shinfo.hIcon);

  • how to attach window.close to cntrl+w keypress event in a xul window?

    - by Erik Vold
    I have a XUL window, and I want the cntrl+w hotkey to close the window, but when I attach: window.addEventListener("keypress", function(ev) { GM_log("onkeypress handler: \n" + "keyCode property: " + ev.keyCode + "\n" + "which property: " + ev.which + "\n" + "charCode property: " + ev.charCode + "\n" + "Character Key Pressed: " + String.fromCharCode(ev.charCode) + "\n"); }, true); to the page, it treats pressing 'w' and 'cntrl+w' the same, charCode 119.. how can I determine that cntrl+w was pressed so that I may window.close() ?

  • How to feed data over STDIN to multiple external commands in ruby.

    - by Erik
This question is a bit like my previous (answered) question: How to run multiple external commands in the background in ruby. But, in this case I am looking for a way to feed ruby strings over STDIN to external processes, something like this (the code below is not valid but illustrates my goal): #!/usr/bin/ruby str1 = 'In reality a relatively large string.....' str2 = 'Another large string' str3 = 'etc..' spawn 'some_command.sh', :stdin => str1 spawn 'some_command.sh', :stdin => str2 spawn 'some_command.sh', :stdin => str3 Process.waitall

  • Linux standard input issue

    - by George2
Hello everyone, I am new to Linux. And I am using Red Hat Enterprise Version 5. There is a ruby program which use standard input as its input (e.g. the Ruby program process input from standard input). I think standard input should be keyboard, correct? So, I think other kinds of input (non-standard input) should not work (i.e. the ruby program should not be able to read input from such non-standard input), but actually I have tried using pipe works, I am so confused because I think pipe should be some other kinds of input -- other than standard input, why it could work? i.e. put text "123" in abc.txt with pipe, could achieve the same result as using keyboard as input to type "123" for the ruby program. Here is the sample which works and makes me confused, cat abc.txt | ~/test/rubysrc/foo.rb thanks in advance, George

  • OptionParser python module - multiple entries of same variable?

    - by jduncan
I'm writing a little python script to get stats from several servers or a single server, and I'm using OptionParser to parse the command line input. #!/usr/bin/python import sys from optparse import OptionParser ... parser.add_option("-s", "--server", dest="server", metavar="SERVER", type="string", help="server(s) to gather stats [default: localhost]") ... my GOAL is to be able to do something like #test.py -s server1 -s server2 and it would append both of those values within the options.server object in some way so that I could iterate through them, whether they have 1 value or 10. Any thoughts / help is appreciated. Thanks.

  • An analog of String.Join(string, string[]) for IEnumerable<T>

    - by abatishchev
class String contains very useful method - String.Join(string, string[]). It creates a string from an array, separating each element of array with a symbol given. But general - it doesn't add a separator after the last element! I uses it for ASP.NET coding for separating with "
" or Environment.NewLine. So I want to add an empty row after each row in asp:Table. What method of IEnumerable<TableRow> can I use for the same functionality?

  • Bash: Check if file was modified since used in script

    - by Thomas Münz
I need to check in a script if a file was modified since I read it (another application can modify it in between). According to bash manual there is a "-N" test which should report if a file was modified since last read. I tried it in a small script but it seems like it doesn't work. #!/bin/bash file="test.txt" echo "test" > $file cat $file; if [ -N $file ]; then echo "modified since read"; else echo "not modified since read"; fi I also tried an alternative way by touching another file and using if [ "file1" -nt "file2 ]; but this works only on a seconds accuracy which may under rare conditions not be sufficient. Is there any other bash-inbuilt solution for this problem or I do really need to use diff or md5sum?

  • Is there any way to run "dir" directly?

    - by Mason Wheeler
In my answer to this question, where the asker needed a fast way to get a directory listing of a folder on a network drive, I suggested using the DOS "dir" command. Unfortunately, it's a command, not a program, so you can't execute it with CreateProcess and so I had to put it in a batch file. I don't really like that solution. It feels like a hack to me. Does anyone know a way to run dir from Delphi instead of from an external batch file?

  • XUL: fit all elements vertically in prefpane

    - by Michael
here goes the XUL part of one of the preference panes. <prefpane id="alt-about" label="About" image="chrome://alt/skin/about.png"> <hbox> <vbox>
</vbox> <vbox>
Bla bla bla, bla bla

Author: bla bla bla

ICQ: bla

E-mail: [email protected]

Website: www.bla-bla.com
<separator class="groove" flex="1"/>
News feed powered by Bla agency

Exchange Rates are powered by Blaaaa Blaa of Blabla
</vbox> </hbox> </prefpane> and for some reason the window is not being vertically resized to fit last description element I tried many attributes, many combinations of vbox/hbox.. same. How to solve it guys?

  • How do I start a XUL Runner application maximized?

    - by Anthony D
I've started developing my first app with XUL and I've run into a problem that I can't seem to solve. All I want to do is have my app start maximized. I've set the sizemode attribute to maximized on my top level window element but that has no effect. My prefs.js file has the following line: pref("toolkit.defaultChromeFeatures", "chrome, centerscreen, menubar, resizable, status, toolbar, scrollbars"); This also does not work. My window appears and it only has a close button (X) and does not have a minimize or maximize button. Any ideas???

  • Python CLI tool - general parsing question

    - by WinkyWolly
If possible I would like to use the following structure for a command however I can't seem to figure out how to achieve this in Python: ./somescript.py arg <optional argument> -- "some long argument" Would it be possible to achieve this in a feasible manner without too much dirty code? Or should I just reconsider the syntax (which is primarily preference). Thanks!

  • F# Extention Methods on Lists, IEnumberable, etc

    - by flevine100
I have searched StackOverflow (and other sources) for this answer, but can't seem to find anything. In C#, if I had a widget definition, say: class widget { public string PrettyName() { ... do stuff here } } and I wanted to allow for easy printing of a list of Widgets, I might do this: namespace ExtensionMethods { public static PrintAll( this IEnumerable<Widget> widgets, TextWriter writer ) { foreach(var w in widgets) { writer.WriteLine( w.PrettyName() ) } } } How would I accomplish something similar with a record type and a collection (List or Seq preferrably in F#). I'd love to have a list of Widgest and be able to call a function right on the collection that did something like this. Assume (since it's F#) that the function would not be changing the state of the collection that it's attached to, but returning some new value.

  • CVS branch name from tag name

    - by Jamie
I have a number of modules in CVS with different tags. How would I go about getting the name of the branch these tagged files exist on? I've tried checking out a file from the module using cvs co -r TAG and then doing cvs log but it appears to give me a list of all of the branches that the file exists on, rather than just a single branch name. Also this needs to be an automated process, so I can't use web based tools like viewvc to gather this info.
