• How to create project specific respository post-commit actions

  Presently, we've got several main projects each in their own repository. We will have to version-control up to a dozen additional projects. VisualSVN recommends to create 1 respository for our company and then vc all projects inside that. It's a good practice to create one repository for the entire company or department and store all your projects in this repository. Creating separate repository for each project is not a good idea because in that case you will not be able to perform Subversion operations like copy, diff and merge cross-project. VisualSvn.com Currently we're using post-commit hooks to update the testing server with the latest commit and do other project specific actions (such as emailing certain people for one project but not for others) depending on which project has been committed. As post-commit runs for the whole repository, is this still possible in such a situation? How would I go about decerning which project has changes? filter folder structure?

• Problem with Eclipse and a Maven multi-module project

  I have created a Maven project with the following structure: + root-project pom.xml (pom) + sub-projectA (jar) + sub-projectB (jar) I have done the following steps: mvn archetype:create –DgroupId=my.group.id –DartifactId=root-project mvn archetype:create –DgroupId=my.group.id –DartifactId=sub-projectA mvn archetype:create –DgroupId=my.group.id –DartifactId=sub-projectB So I have, obviously, in the top-level pom.xml the following elements: <modules> <module>sub-projectA</module> <module>sub-projectB</module> </modules> The last step was: mvn eclipse:clean eclipse:eclipse Now if I import the root-project in Eclipse, it seems to look at my projects as resources and not like java projects. However if I import each of child projects sub-projectA and sub-projectB, it looks them like java projects. This is a big problem for me because I have a deeper hierarchy. Any help would be appreciated!

  I'm wanting to make a small python program for yearly temperatures. I can get nearly everything working in the standard console but I'm wanting to implement it into a GUI. The program opens a csv file reads it into lists, works out the average, and min & max temps. Then on closing the application will save a summary to a new text file. I am wanting the default start up screen to show All Years. When a button is clicked it just shows that year's data. Here is a what I want it to look like. Pretty simple layout with just the 5 buttons and the out puts for each. • Compile error in java application using netbeans - linked project

  I have a project which has shared functionality between three other projects and have linked these to existing projects as I normally would using the add project functionality of the libraries folder. This all used to work however when I started up Netbeans yesterday it just wasn't working as in the other projects won't compile even though the projects are linked. It can recognise the packages - just the actual classes themselves were not recognised. I have checked the dist folder of the shared project and the Shared.jar file exists. Any suggestions?

• Visual Studio project remains "stuck" when stopped

  Hi, Currently developing a connector DLL to HP's Quality Center. I'm using their (insert expelative) COM API to connect to the server. An Interop wrapper gets created automatically by VStudio. My solution has 2 projects: the DLL and a tester application - essentially a form with buttons that call functions in the DLL. Everything works well - I can create defects, update them and delete them. When I close the main form, the application stops nicely. But when I call a function that returns a list of all available projects (to fill a combo box), if I close the main form, VStudio still shows the solution as running and I have to stop it. I've managed to pinpoint a single function in my code that when I call, the solution remains "hung" and if I don't, it closes well. It's a call to a property in the TDC object get_VisibleProjects that returns a List (not the .Net one, but a type in the COM library) - I just iterate over it and return a proper list (that I later use to fill the combo box): public List<string> GetAvailableProjects() { List<string> projects = new List<string>(); foreach (string project in this.tdc.get_VisibleProjects(qcDomain)) { projects.Add(project); } return projects; } My assumption is that something gets retained in memory. If I run the EXE outside of VStudio it closes - but who knows what gets left behind in memory? My question is - how do I get rid of whatever calling this property returns? Shouldn't the GC handle this? Do I need to delve into pointers? Things I've tried: getting the list into a variable and setting it to null at the end of the function Adding a destructor to the class and nulling the tdc object Stepping through the tester function application all the way out, whne the form closes and the Main function ends - it closes, but VStudio still shows I'm running. • How best to modernize the 2002-era J2EE app?

  I have this friend.... I have this friend who works on a java ee application (j2ee) application started in the early 2000's. Currently they add a feature here and there, but have a large codebase. Over the years the team has shrunk by 70%. [Yes, the "i have this friend is". It's me, attempting to humorously inject teenage high-school counselor shame into the mix] Java, Vintage 2002 The application uses EJB 2.1, struts 1.x, DAO's etc with straight jdbc calls (mixture of stored procedures and prepared statements). No ORM. For caching they use a mixture of OpenSymphony OSCache and a home-grown cache layer. Over the last few years, they have spent effort to modernize the UI using ajax techniques and libraries. This largely involves javascript libaries (jquery, yui, etc). Client Side On the client side, the lack of upgrade path from struts1 to struts2 discouraged them from migrating to struts2. Other web frameworks became popular (wicket, spring , jsf). Struts2 was not the "clear winner". Migrating all the existing UI from Struts1 to Struts2/wicket/etc did not seem to present much marginal benefit at a very high cost. They did not want to have a patchwork of technologies-du-jour (subsystem X in Struts2, subsystem Y in Wicket, etc.) so developer write new features using Struts 1. Server Side On the server side, they looked into moving to ejb 3, but never had a big impetus. The developers are all comfortable with ejb-jar.xml, EJBHome, EJBRemote, that "ejb 2.1 as is" represented the path of least resistance. One big complaint about the ejb environment: programmers still pretend "ejb server runs in separate jvm than servlet engine". No app server (jboss/weblogic) has ever enforced this separation. The team has never deployed the ejb server on a separate box then the app server. The ear file contains multiple copies of the same jar file; one for the 'web layer' (foo.war/WEB-INF/lib) and one for the server side (foo.ear/). The app server only loads one jar. The duplications makes for ambiguity. Caching As for caching, they use several cache implementations: OpenSymphony cache and a homegrown cache. Jgroups provides clustering support Now What? The question: The team currently has spare cycles to to invest in modernizing the application? Where would the smart investor spend them? The main criteria: 1) productivity gains. Specifically reducing the time to develope new subsystems features and reduced maintenance. 2) performance/scalability. They do not care about fashion or techno-du-jour street cred. What do you all recommend? On the persistence side Switch everything (or new development only) to JPA/JPA2? Straight hibernate? Wait for Java EE 6? On the client/web-framework side: Migrate (some or all) to struts2? wicket? jsf/jsf2? As for caching: terracotta? ehcache? coherence? stick with what they have? how best to take advantage of the huge heap sizes that the 64-bit jvms offer? Thanks in advance.

• Can I safely move my project to .NET 4.0?

  I've migrated my project to VS2010 but have not yet targeted .NET 4.0. It's currently targeting 3.5 SP1 (and CLR 2). The project relies on several third party components -- mostly open source -- that were presumably built against the 2.0 CLR. Can I simply retarget my project to the 4.0 runtime? Or do I have to get new versions of all the referenced assemblies on which it depends? I've read a little about the new in-process side-by-side feature of .NET 4.0, but I don't think it applies here (the example I read was about two different .NET plug ins to an office application). My situation is different. My solution directly references assemblies and I wouldn't think side-by-side applies -- unless I don't understand its purpose. TIA

But there's just too much going on in the Linq-to-SQL side right now and we'd like to do it in phases. so any chance we can just start writing new stuff in entity framework but leave the older stuff running as is? • Mono - Could not find a 'Sub Main' in ''

  I started a new solution (with multiple projects) and am trying to get it to build. Initially I was getting an internal compiler error and thought maybe it had to do with MySql, so I removed all references to MySql. Now I am getting the error "Could not find a 'Sub Main' in ''". I have made sure that all of my projects have a Main subroutine like this: Public Shared Sub Main() End Sub 2 out of the 7 projects will compile. I don't know what makes these projects different from the others, and the error message isn't very helpful. Any experience with this one?

  Guys, I have a Visual C++ solution with 2 projects AlgorithmA & AlgorithmB and both share a common header file RunAlgo.h with the class declaration. Each project in the solution has its own unique implementation for the header file. I am trying to compile a DLL out of the common header file RunAlgo.h and add reference to this DLL in the projects AlgorithmA & AlgorithmB. I have then included separate RunAlgo.cpp definition file in both my projects. The problem is that I am getting linker errors while compiling the new DLL project which has only the header file. So, the question is Can a header file with only class declaration be compiled into a DLL (Similar to class library containing an Interface in C#)? For the above scenario, is there a better approach to reuse the common Header file among projects? Should the above method work (re-check my code?)

  Hi, A lot of interesting code/projects are implementations of protocols, eg SNMP. How are projects like these, which depend on implementing a certain format, developed? Is the process something like get the guidelines of the protocol and then implement code which follows it. For example, XML-RPC is about transmitting XML docs between client/server, so the documentation on this protocol must outline the structure of the XML documents and then the way the transportation between client and server works, so the coder will implement this sort of functionality (xml doc construction, networking between the client and server). Projects I am thinking of (not to develop) are C# libraries which can interpret .PSDs, make VHDs, etc. So if I was to develop a C# app to implement .AI files (Illustrator files), what would be the steps I would look at (such as contacting Adobe, etc)? Is this the way such projects are developed?

• how do i keep the aspect ratio on image buttons in android?

  i have 5 square ImageButtons that i want to have lined up side by side on the bottom of the screen. I have each one set (different id's) as: <ImageButton android:id="@+id/box1" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_gravity="center" android:adjustViewBounds="true" android:scaleType="fitXY" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_margin="1dp" /> and i have the background assigned in main java like this: int[] imageIds = new int[] {R.id.box1,R.id.box2,R.id.box3,R.id.box4,R.id.box5}; for(int i = 0; i<5; i++){ imageButtons[i] = (ImageButton) findViewById(imageIds[i]); imageButtons[i].setBackgroundResource(R.drawable.blank); } what i would like to have it do is scale the width to fit neatly side-by-side at the bottom of the screen (which it does now ok), but have the height automatically scale to match the width as well. is this possible? i don't want to use setImageSource because then it puts a border around the imagebutton.
