• How can I run unity with Slim with sound

  I'm trying to start the unity environment from slim display manager, everything goes fine, except by the sound that don't work, the device just dont appear in the device list I already changed the slim config file to start with this code below, but it didnt solve the problem.... login_cmd exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch /bin/bash -login /etc/X11/Xsession %session I believe the it is related with some thing that the gdm/lighdm start with the session and slim dont do that When I use the lighdm or gdm to start the environment everything works fine

  Hey Guys~ So the second day of the week starts, and we were all set for coming sessions on : - IS & Strategy and, - Changing Geo-politics & Business Environment We did our daily chores, rushed for breakfast, and reached Auditorioum, almost on time. IS & Strategy session was quite informative and interactive, and the prof. gave lot of examples, and it really gives us solid understanding by relating things with examples. Then goes the lunch, but the IS session over shoot for 15 minutes so our idea of taking a nap in lunch was not working out, but anyway we did our lunch and tried to sleep for 10-15 minutes. We got back and session on International Business started. Frankly, it’s a great topic, but we had tough time to be attentive, and it was hard to keep ourselves awake :P Anyhow the session came to an end, and we went to Library, and roamed around campus. Got back, had dinner, and went for a night walk, and ice-cream party. Lastly we did went to the platform inside the lake, and had a gag session, got back and  did “ITC eChaupal” case study. We have planned to visit Kali Mandir tomorrow, so I’ve to sleep for few hours…GN! Stay tuned for more… ram :)

• nvidia segfault crashes XServer (12.04 fresh install)

  I am on a fresh install of 12.04, and my video card is a Quadro FX 570, which appears to be supported (see output of unity_support_test below). But my Xserver crashes randomly and causes my session to just shutdown and bring me back to the logging screen. This happens several times per hour. • 'sudo su -' vs 'sudo -i' vs 'sudo /bin/bash' - when does it matter which is used, or does it matter at all?

  When I'm doing something that requires root be typed in dozens of times in a row, I prefer to switch my session to a root session. In the various tutorials and instructions I have used on the Internet, I see sudo su, sudo su -, sudo -i and sudo /bin/bash being used to open a root session, but I'm not clear on the difference between these and when or if that difference matters. Can someone clear this up for me?

• Control-Break Style ADF Table - Comparing Values with Previous Row

  Sometimes you need to display data in an ADF Faces table in a control-break layout style, where rows should be "indented" when the break column has the same value as in the previous row. In the screen shot below, you see how the table breaks on both the RegionId column as well as the CountryId column. To implement this I didn't use fancy SQL statements. The table is based on a straightforward Locations ViewObject that is based on the Locations entity object and the Countries reference entity object, and the join query was automatically created by adding the reference EO. The get method in the bean that is called returns boolean false when the attribute has the same value in the same row. • Cannot start Postgres daemon after installing with Yum

  I was trying to install Postgres 9.1.4 on Fedora 17 using Yum. If I do: sudo yum install postgres-libs sudo yum install postgres sudo yum install postgis All the installs appear to complete successfully (i.e., no errors), but I cannot start the Postgres daemon using: service postgresql initdb Like the official Postgres download guide says to do (http://www.postgresql.org/download/linux/redhat/). The error says Unknown operation initdb. RPM tells me that it installed psql to /usr/bin/, which I confirmed. It turns out that only a few components installed correctly (psql, pg_dump, pg_configure, and a few others), but most are missing (e.g., pg_ctl and postgres). I've tried several different configurations and had several of my coworkers (with more linux experience than me) look at it, but so far nothing has worked. Two of them have also run into similar issues installing Postgres using apt-get on Ubuntu, which makes me think the rpm isn't doing its job. It seems the only solution to build it from source, which is more robust anyway, but of course it takes longer. I'm wondering, though, if anyone else has run into this issue and/or has successfully installed Postgres on either Fedora or Ubuntu using a package manager like yum or apt-get? Is the rpm broken?

• Xubuntu 14.04 black screen after monitor off/on

  I have a HP desktop machine with Ubuntu 14.04, with also Xubuntu and Gnome desktops installed. I mostly use the Xubuntu session. When using the Xubuntu session, when I power off my monitor, and power it back on, the screen stays black and I cannot do any work. With ctrl-alt-f6 I can open another virtual terminal, and then the screen works again, but if I to go back to the desktop session with ctrl-alt-f7, all I have is a black screen. But, if I login to Unity (the Ubuntu default session), or to Gnome, and turn the monitor off and back on, everything works ok. Also, if I log out, and while in the lightdm greeter, turn the monitor off and back on, everything works ok. What could be the cause for this, and how to fix this?

• Why is my system freezing when I switch users

  Hello I've recently upgraded from 13.04 to 13.10 64bit. I'm running AMD graphics with the proprietary drivers. I have two user accounts. Mine(administrator) and my girlfriend's(standard) My girlfriend clicks "switch user" from my lock screen and logs in fine. I then try to click "switch user" from her lock screen and everything goes black. Then the monitor blinks on and off with just a single cursor. I have no way to access the terminal, the system is unresponsive and I have to hit the power button. Even ctrl + alt + f4 or ctrl + alt + t doesn't get me a terminal. When I press the power button on my system, it does start printing out the shutdown sequence on the monitor. Here is my .xsession-errors Script for ibus started at run_im. • .pam_environment in kerberized nfs4 home directory

  How can I get pam_env to read the user's .pam_environment file, if the user's file is located in a kerberized NFS4 mount? The file and directory permissions for the .pam_environment file are set in a way, that allows the local root to read the file. Reading .pam_environment only fails on the first login. Subsequent logins successfully read the file. The client uses Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop, NFS/Kerberos server is 12.04 Server. The Kerberos/NFS4 stuff works with exception of this. • Bash command history not working

  The command history between sessions is not getting saved. I'm using guake and the history for the session is working fine. I noticed that .bash_history had some commands I executed in "sudo -s" mode and tried the same again and all the commands while in the session got saved so I tried "chmod 777 .bash_history" Now the old commands appear at the start of a session but no new commands are getting saved Thanx in advance

  The Oracle Benelux User Group (OBUG) have given me an amazing opportunity to present a one day Optimizer workshop at their annual Connect Conference in Maastricht on April 24th. The workshop will run as one of the parallel tracks at the conference and consists of three 45 minute sessions. Each session can be attended stand alone but they will build on each other to allow someone new to the Oracle Optimizer or SQL tuning to come away from the conference with a better understanding of how the Optimizer works and what techniques they should deploy to tune their SQL. • Using runtime generic type reflection to build a smarter DAO

  Have you ever wished you could get the runtime type of your generic class? I wonder why they didn’t put this in the language. • Logging in over and over again. How to fix this?

  Ok, I messed up. I installed ubuntu 11.10, installed awesome wm and removed unity, to have something to fall back on, I also installed gnome-session-fallback. I was messing around and did the following, because the awesome wiki told me to: gconftool-2 --type bool --set /apps/nautilus/preferences/show_desktop False # Still disable the buggy Nautilus desktop thing gconftool-2 --type string --set /desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager awesome # sets awesome as wm Now here's what's wrong: I can start up decently, and then I get into a login window (that of gnome-session-fallback). I enter my username, select the preferred window manager (awesome in my case) and enter my password. It accepts these, but then hold for a second and just opens the login window again, in effect preventing me from actually logging in. I also tried gconftool-2 --unset (from the tty) on these settings, but that didn't work either. What can I do to revert the gconftool-2 settings to something that should work? I tried apt-get purging gnome-session-fallback and lightdm, and then installing them again, but that didn't work.

• Group Policy fault - Students force

  Work at a school and we've got a scenario. We block F8 on all computers so students cannot access Safe Mode to bypass Group Policy... But students are logging into their accounts using AD, and they are turning them off half way through. Then they are claiming that when they login next time, they have Local Administrator accounts. Is this right, but we have blocked F8 and Startup repair, so wondering how they actually did it. Cheers Richard

• NHibernate Pitfalls: Private Setter on Id Property

  Having a private setter on an entity’s id property may seem tempting: in most cases, unless you are using id generators assigned or foreign, you never have to set its value directly. However, keep this in mind: If your entity is lazy and you want to prevent people from setting its value, make the setter protected instead of private, because it will need to be accessed from subclasses of your entity (generated by NHibernate); If you use stateless sessions, you can perform some operations which, on regular sessions, require you to load an entity, without doing so, for example: 1: using (IStatelessSession session = factory.OpenStatelessSession()) 2: { 3: //delete without first loading 4: session.Delete(new Customer { Id = 1 }); 5:  6: //insert without first loading 7: session.Insert(new Order { Customer = new Customer { Id = 1 }, Product = new Product { Id = 1 } }); 8:  9: //update without first loading 10: session.Update(new Order{ Id = 1, Product = new Product{ Id = 2 }}) 11: }

• Legacy Code Retreat Questions

  I recently heard of the concept of a Legacy Code Retreat. Since I have attended and helped facilitate some normal Code Retreats I thought it might be interesting in trying a Legacy Code Retreat, but I have a few questions on how a legacy CR differs from a normal one. If anyone has attended a Legacy CR and has some suggestions on how best to host these event’s please leave a comment on what has worked for you in the past or if you have any answers to my questions below… Should you restrict the languages that people can do the sessions in? In the normal CR’s I have been involved in the past we have had people attend and code in their programming language of choice. A normal CR lends itself to  this because each session starts with no code. With a legacy CR each session seems to start with an existing code base. Is there some sort of limitation on the languages that people can work in during the sessions? If not, how do you give them a base to start from? What happens as the beginning of each session? In the normal CR that I have attended each session would have a constraint set on it – i.e. no if statements used, no primitives, etc. With a legacy CR it seems more like patterns for refactoring are learned. Does the facilitator explain the pattern used before the session starts or are they just given a code base to start from and an objective to achieve

• Debug/step into a Linux boot

  Is there a way to watch Linux boot as though it was a program compiled with GCC on a Linux environment using the -g switch so, say, I can step through the entire boot sequence from GRUB onwards, choosing to step through at C source level or assembly when necessary/desirable, by using GDB or a GDB-like tool? I suspect it would require a virtual machine at least, to watch the boot on a host environment. Any elaboration on this topic of observing a boot would be appreciated!

• Can a custom DPI setting be applied to Remote Desktop sessions?

  Can a custom DPI setting be applied to Remote Desktop sessions? When you try to change the DPI from a Remote Desktop session, you get a message that display settings can't be changed from a remote session. That made me think that changing DPI from a console setting would work. It did, sort of. If I connected via Remote Desktop to an existing console session with a custom DPI setting, that setting would be applied to the Remote Desktop session. However, if I logged off that session, the custom DPI would not be applied to subsequent Remote Desktop sessions even though it was maintained for subsequent console sessions. It looks like the registry value HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics\AppliedDPI (and perhaps other values) is overwritten at logon, but I haven't been able figure out how to prevent it.

• Start Daemonised GNU Screen from script a allow calling script to end

  I have a script on an embedded device that calls screen to start if a user logs in via a ssh session... #!/bin/sh SCREENRUNNING=`pgrep SCREEN` if [ -z "$SCREENRUNNING" ]; then echo "Screen not running so let's start the Master session sleep 2 screen -dmS Master sleep 2 screen -x root/Master else echo "Screen is already running let's connect to existing session" sleep 2 screen -x root/Master fi However this keeps the calling script active till the screen session exits,even if it's detached. What I want to do is have the calling script finish and exit while the screen session stays active. I've tried daemonising the screen -x lines and adding an & to the end of the screen -x lines neither of which work properly. Ideas?
