    This is a design doubt am facing, I have a collection of 1500 images which are to be displayed on an asp.net page, the images to be displayed differ from one page to another, the count of these images will increase in the time to come, a.) is it a good idea to have the images on the database, but the round trip time to fetch the images from the database might be high. b.) is it good to have all the images on a directory, and have a virtual file system over it, and the application will access the images from the directory Do we have in particular any design strategy in a traditional database for fetching images with the least round trip time, does any solution other than usage of a traditional database exists? ps: I use SQL Server to store these images.

For each user listing is different and he can filter listing by selecting view from a dropdown. ViewName in the below table is the view which needs to be displayed.   • EAV - is it really bad in all scenarios?

    I'm thinking to use EAV for some of the stuff in one of the projects, but all questions about it in stackoverflow end up to answers calling EAV an anti pattern. But I'm wondering, if is it that wrong in all cases? Let's say shop product entity, it has common features, like name, description, image, price, etc., that take part in logic many places and has (semi)unique features, like watch and beach ball would be described by completely different aspects. So I think EAV would fit for storing those (semi)unique features? All this is assuming, that for showing product list, it is enough info in product table (that means no EAV is involved) and just when showing one product/comparing up to 5 products/etc. data saved using EAV is used. I've seen such approach in Magento commerce and it is quite popular, so may be there are cases, when EAV is reasonable?

I want to store the errors that occur in route.php in cron.log This works wonderfully when I run : php /home/admin/public_html/domain.com/public/cron/route.php &>> /home/admin/public_html/domain.com/log/cron.log through the command line manually. But when crontab runs it no errors gets stored in cron.log the cron.log is owned by admin:admin and the permissions are set to 777 just to be sure. anyone?

    I'm trying to add UUIDs to a couple of tables, but I'm not sure what the best way to store/retrieve these would be. I understand it's far more efficient to use BINARY(16) instead of VARCHAR(36). After doing a bit of research, I also found that you can convert a UUID string to binary with: UNHEX(REPLACE(UUID(),'-','')) Pardon my ignorance, but is there an easy way to this with PHP and then turn it back to a string, when needed, for readability? Also, would it make much difference if I used this as a primary key instead of auto_increment? EDIT: Found part of the answer: $bin = pack("h*", str_replace('-', '', $guid)); How would you unpack it?

  • Truncating a string while storing it in an array in c

    I am trying to create an array of 20 character strings with a maximum of 17 characters that are obtained from a file named "words.dat". After that the program should truncate the string only showing the first 17 characters and completely ignore the rest of that string. However My question is: I am not quite sure how to accomplish this, can anyone give me some insight on how to accomplish this task?     I'm not exactly positive how to word this for the sake of the title so please forgive me. Also I can't seem to figure out how to even google this question, so I'm hoping that I can get a lead in the right direction. Part of my software(VB.NET App) requires the ability to access/read/write a shared network folder. I have an option for the user to specify any credentials that might be needed to access said folder. I want to store these credentials given in the SQL Server database as part of the config (I have a table which contains configuration). My concern is that the password for the user account will be unencrpyted. Yet, if I encrypt the password the VB.NET App And/Or database will be unable to use the credentials for file i/o operations unless the Password is unencrypted before use. I'm fishing for suggestions on how to better handle this situation.

    I'm using the Objectify library for interfacing with the app engine datastore. In my User class, I store the hashed password as a byte[]. When I put it in the datastore, it is correctly stored as a blob. When I try to load the User object back out I get this error: java.lang.IllegalStateException: Cannot load non-collection value '<Blob: 40 bytes>' into private byte[] How do I fix this? Do I have to change my User class to have the hashed password be of type ShortBlob?

    Hi all, Just wondering if you can point me in the direction of a simple, fast program which stores code snippets. I have been using a local wiki up to now, but I find it a little annoying at times. Ideally I would like this application to be portable - i.e. it could run off of a USB stick on multiple machines with no installation. What do you guys use? EDIT: I would prefer a solution that was decoupled from the IDE and stored locally, not in the cloud. EDIT 2: Thanks for all the replies thus far, but I am still awaiting a non cloud / web based portable solution. Anyone else care to weigh in? :)

I recently bought Javascript: The Good Parts and while I find this a big help, I'm still having trouble designing this application. Especially when it comes to writing function and methods.     I'm trying to find the appropriate place to store a system path in PostgreSQL. What I'm trying to do is load values into a table using the COPY command. However, since I will be referring to the same file path regularly I want to store that path in one place. I've tried creating a function to return the appropriate path, but I get a syntax error when I call the function in the COPY command. I'm not sure if this is the right way to go about it, but I'll post my code anyway.     I've looked through countless questions on here and elsewhere and cannot for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong. I'm trying to store an array of CGPoints as NSValues inside of an NSMutableArray named points like so on the iPhone: NSValue *point = [NSValue valueWithCGPoint:firstTouch]; NSLog(@"NSValue *point = %@", point); [points addObject:point]; NSLOG OUTPUT NSValue *point = NSPoint: {120, 221} Everything is going smooth converting from the CGPoint to NSValue. But when I try to retrieve the point I get nothing. NSValue *getPoint = [points objectAtIndex:0]; CGPoint thePoint = [getPoint CGPointValue]; NSLog(@"Point = %@", NSStringFromCGPoint(thePoint)); NSLOG OUTPUT Point = {0, 0} The points should be the same but I'm getting a null result. For testing purposes this is happening in the touchesBegan method. Does anyone have any idea where I'm going wrong? Thanks in advance.

For whatever reason no matter what I do it always results in the row getting updated with a new timestamp value rather than creating a new row. Even tried to just use a native query to run an insert but channel's ID wasn't populated yet so I gave up on that. I've tried using an embedded id class consisting of channel.getId and inUseAt.
