  • Performance of Silverlight Datagrid in Silverlight 3 vs Silverlight 4 on a mac

    I'm using Silverlight Beta 4 for a LOB application. After finding out today that I'll have to wait perhaps 4 months to be able to develop with SL4 on Visual Studio 2010 I'm thinking I need to downgrade my application to SL3 but thats another question. The problem is I'm noticing absolutely abismal performance for simple datagrids that work just fine on a PC when I'm running on a Mac. These grids contain only 5-10 columns and maybe 50 rows. Paging up and down takes about 1-2 seconds sometimes. I would appreciate anybody's experience in which of the following is the best solution: reverting to Silverlight 3 and hoping DataGrid is faster switching to 3rd party datagrid such as Telerik forgetting silverlight altogether I was hoping that possibly SL4 runtime might be updated but that won't happen probably for 3-4 months. Just a reminder - this is specifically a mac issue. Performance on my PC while slightly slow to populate the grid initially is fine.

  • MEF CompositionInitializer for WPF

    The Managed Extensibility Framework is an amazingly useful addition to the .NET Framework.  I was very excited to see System.ComponentModel.Composition added to the core framework.  Personally, I feel that MEF is one tool I’ve always been missing in my .NET development. Unfortunately, one perfect scenario for MEF tends to fall short of it’s full potential is in Windows Presentation Foundation development.  In particular, there are many times when the XAML parser constructs objects in WPF development, which makes composition of those parts difficult.  The current release of MEF (Preview Release 9) addresses this for Silverlight developers via System.ComponentModel.Composition.CompositionInitializer.  However, there is no equivalent class for WPF developers. The CompositionInitializer class provides the means for an object to compose itself.  This is very useful with WPF and Silverlight development, since it allows a View, such as a UserControl, to be generated via the standard XAML parser, and still automatically pull in the appropriate ViewModel in an extensible manner.  Glenn Block has demonstrated the usage for Silverlight in detail, but the same issues apply in WPF. As an example, let’s take a look at a very simple case.  Take the following XAML for a Window: <Window x:Class="WpfApplication1.MainView" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml/presentation" xmlns:x="http://schemas.microsoft.com/winfx/2006/xaml" Title="MainWindow" Height="220" Width="300"> <Grid> <TextBlock Text="{Binding TheText}" /> </Grid> </Window> This does nothing but create a Window, add a simple TextBlock control, and use it to display the value of our “TheText” property in our DataContext class.  Since this is our main window, WPF will automatically construct and display this Window, so we need to handle constructing the DataContext and setting it ourselves. We could do this in code or in XAML, but in order to do it directly, we would need to hard code the ViewModel type directly into our XAML code, or we would need to construct the ViewModel class and set it in the code behind.  Both have disadvantages, and the disadvantages grow if we’re using MEF to compose our ViewModel. Ideally, we’d like to be able to have MEF construct our ViewModel for us.  This way, it can provide any construction requirements for our ViewModel via [ImportingConstructor], and it can handle fully composing the imported properties on our ViewModel.  CompositionInitializer allows this to occur. We use CompositionInitializer within our View’s constructor, and use it for self-composition of our View.  Using CompositionInitializer, we can modify our code behind to: public partial class MainView : Window { public MainView() { InitializeComponent(); CompositionInitializer.SatisfyImports(this); } [Import("MainViewModel")] public object ViewModel { get { return this.DataContext; } set { this.DataContext = value; } } } We then can add an Export on our ViewModel class like so: [Export("MainViewModel")] public class MainViewModel { public string TheText { get { return "Hello World!"; } } } MEF will automatically compose our application, decoupling our ViewModel injection to the DataContext of our View until runtime.  When we run this, we’ll see: There are many other approaches for using MEF to wire up the extensible parts within your application, of course.  However, any time an object is going to be constructed by code outside of your control, CompositionInitializer allows us to continue to use MEF to satisfy the import requirements of that object. In order to use this from WPF, I’ve ported the code from MEF Preview 9 and Glenn Block’s (now obsolete) PartInitializer port to Windows Presentation Foundation.  There are some subtle changes from the Silverlight port, mainly to handle running in a desktop application context.  The default behavior of my port is to construct an AggregateCatalog containing a DirectoryCatalog set to the location of the entry assembly of the application.  In addition, if an “Extensions” folder exists under the entry assembly’s directory, a second DirectoryCatalog for that folder will be included.  This behavior can be overridden by specifying a CompositionContainer or one or more ComposablePartCatalogs to the System.ComponentModel.Composition.Hosting.CompositionHost static class prior to the first use of CompositionInitializer.   • Blending the Sketchflow Action

    Started a new Sketchflow Prototype in Expression Blend recently and documented each of the steps.  This blog entry covers some of those steps, which are the basic elements of any prototype.  I will have more information regarding design, prototype creation, and the process of the initial phases for development in the future.  For now, I hope you enjoy this short walk through.  Also, be sure to check out my last quick entry on Sketchflow. I started off with a Sketchflow Project, just like I did in my previous entry (more specifics in that entry about how to manipulate and build out the Sketchflow Map). Once I created the project I setup the following Sketchflow Map. Once I created all the screens I setup the navigation by opening up each screen and right clicking on the objects that needed to point to somewhere else in the prototype. Once I was done with the main page, my Home Navigation Page, it looked something like this in the Expression Blend Designer. I fleshed out each of the additional screens.  Once I was done I wanted to try out the deployment package.  The way to deploy a Sketchflow Prototype is to merely click on File –> Package SketchFlow Project and a prompt will appear.  In the prompt enter what you want the package to be called. I like to see the files generated afterwards too, so I checked the box to see that.  When Expression Blend is done generating everything you’ll have a directory like the one shown below, with all the needed files for deployment. Now these files can be copied or moved to any location for viewing.  One can even copy them (such as via FTP) to a server location to share with others.  Once they are deployed and you run the "TestPage.html" the other features of the Sketchflow Package are available. In the image below I have tagged a few sections to show the Sketchflow Player Features.  To the top left is the navigation, which provides a clearly defined area of movement in a list.  To the center right is the actual prototype application.  I have placed lists of things and made edits.  On the left hand side is the highlight feature, which is available in the Feedback section of the lower left.  On the right hand list I underlined the Autochart with an orange marker, and marked out two list items with a red marker. In the lower left hand side in the Feedback section is also an area to type in your feedback.  This can be useful for time based feedback, when you post this somewhere and want people to provide subsequent follow up feedback. Overall lots of great features, that enable some fairly rapid prototyping with customers.  Once one is familiar with the steps and parts of this Sketchflow Prototype Capabilities it is easy to step through an application without even stopping.  It really is that easy.  So get hold of Expression Blend 3 and get ramped up on Sketchflow, it will pay off in the design phases to do so!     I know this topic has been asked, but the posts are all out of date, or not functional on IE8. In brief we basically want to do the excel style locking of column headers in a GridView. I have seen a couple of solutions one jquery+ css(setExpression) which doesn't work in IE8. And another that uses ajax extensions, yet again doesn't work in IE8.     All I'm trying to do is display a separator (I've tried images & stylesheets) between the primary navigation menu items in Sharepoint. Here is what I want it to look like: Home | Menu1 | Menu2 | Menu3 When I attempt to use the StaticTopSeparatorImageUrl (using a bar image) it results in the following: Home | Menu1 | Menu2 | Menu3 | This is obviously not a separator, and when I use the StaticBottomSeparatorImageUrl the opposite happens. I also tried to style the ms-topnav class to have a left border, which doesn't work because the control doesn't identify the first (or last) item in the menu... So, my next option was to use the Telerik RadMenu, after fighting to get it into Sharepoint I had difficulties getting it to display like the Sharepoint Menu using the SiteMapDataSource (display only the Home item and no children). This seems SO simple, but it is Sharepoint, so nothing is really simple. I'm wondering if there is either a way to make the default Sharepoint separator work correctly that I might have missed, or is there a GOOD Sharepoint menu replacement that actually takes styling into account?

  • 'Please wait' screen between pages in C# ASP.NET. Best practice?

    Hi, I have a gridview with some imagebuttons, each of which kicks off a report page for that item. The report take 10-15 seconds to run, so I'd like a popup 'Generating report, please wait' type thing. I can think of a few ways but would like the opinion of those more experienced than I. The options I was considering: a) link my imagebutton to an intermediate page that says 'please wait', and then refer it onto the report page from there. Seems a bit clunky b) Investigate using jquery or similar. I have telerik controls, they have a few things but it isn't clear if any are suitable. c) Define some kind of CSS layer with a please wait warning on it, and make it visible as part of the button's onclick event d) Look into jquery or similar Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • Integrate BING API for Search inside ASP.Net web application

    As you might already know, Bing is the Microsoft Search engine and is getting popular day by day. Bing offers APIs that can be integrated into your website to increase your website functionality. At this moment, there are two important APIs available. They are Bing Search API Bing Maps The Search API enables you to build applications that utilize Bing’s technology. The API allows you to search multiple source types such as web; images, video etc. and supports various output prototypes such as JSON, XML, and SOAP. Also you will be able to customize the search results as you wish for your public facing website. Bing Maps API allows you to build robust applications that use Bing Maps. In this article I am going to describe, how you can integrate Bing search into your website. In order to start using Bing, First you need to sign in to http://www.bing.com/toolbox/bingdeveloper/ using your windows live credentials. Click on the Sign in button, you will be asked to enter your windows live credentials. Once signed in you will be redirected to the Developer page. Here you can create applications and get AppID for each application. Since I am a first time user, I don’t have any applications added. Click on the Add button to add a new application. You will be asked to enter certain details about your application. The fields are straight forward, only thing you need to note is the website field, here you need to enter the website address from where you are going to use this application, and this field is optional too. Of course you need to agree on the terms and conditions and then click Save. Once you click on save, the application will be created and application ID will be available for your use. Now we got the APP Id. Basically Bing supports three protocols. They are JSON, XML and SOAP. JSON is useful if you want to call the search requests directly from the browser and use JavaScript to parse the results, thus JSON is the favorite choice for AJAX application. XML is the alternative for applications that does not support SOAP, e.g. flash/ Silverlight etc. SOAP is ideal for strongly typed languages and gives a request/response object model. In this article I am going to demonstrate how to search BING API using SOAP protocol from an ASP.Net application. For the purpose of this demonstration, I am going to create an ASP.Net project and implement the search functionality in an aspx page. Open Visual Studio, navigate to File-> New Project, select ASP.Net empty web application, I named the project as “BingSearchSample”. Add a Search.aspx page to the project, once added the solution explorer will looks similar to the following. Now you need to add a web reference to the SOAP service available from Bing. To do this, from the solution explorer, right click your project, select Add Service Reference. Now the new service reference dialog will appear. In the left bottom of the dialog, you can find advanced button, click on it. Now the service reference settings dialog will appear. In the bottom left, you can find Add Web Reference button, click on it. The add web reference dialog will appear now. Enter the URL as http://api.bing.net/search.wsdl?AppID=<YourAppIDHere>&version=2.2 (replace <yourAppIDHere> with the appID you have generated previously) and click on the button next to it. This will find the web service methods available. You can change the namespace suggested by Bing, but for the purpose of this demonstration I have accepted all the default settings. Click on the Add reference button once you are done. Now the web reference to Search service will be added your project. You can find this under solution explorer of your project. Now in the Search.aspx, that you previously created, place one textbox, button and a grid view. For the purpose of this demonstration, I have given the identifiers (ID) as txtSearch, btnSearch, gvSearch respectively. The idea is to search the text entered in the text box using Bing service and show the results in the grid view. In the design view, the search.aspx looks as follows. In the search.aspx.cs page, add a using statement that points to net.bing.api. I have added the following code for button click event handler. The code is very straight forward. It just calls the service with your AppID, a query to search and a source for searching. Let us run this page and see the output when I enter Microsoft in my textbox. If you want to search a specific site, you can include the site name in the query parameter. For e.g. the following query will search the word Microsoft from www.microsoft.com website. searchRequest.Query = “site:www.microsoft.com Microsoft”; The output of this query is as follows. Integrating BING search API to your website is easy and there is no limit on the customization of the interface you can do. There is no Bing branding required so I believe this is a great option for web developers when they plan for site search.

  • Organizing source code in TFS 2010

    We have just gotten TFS 2010 up and running. We will be migrating our source into TFS but I have a question on how to organize the code. TFS 2010 has a new concept of project collections so I have decided that different groups within our organization. My team develops many different web applications and we have several shared components. We also use a few third party components (such as telerik). Clearly each web application is it's own project but where do I put the shard components? Should each component be in it's own project with separate builds and work items? Is there a best practice or recommended way to do this specific to TFS 2010?

  • Which ORM to use with SQL Azure?

    Just wondering what everyones thoughts on what ORM to use for SQL Azure? I'm fairly comfortable using LINQ-to-SQL and I believe it is possible to get it working with SQL Azure. However, from my understanding (correct me if I'm wrong), no further improvements will be made to Linq-to-SQL in future releases of the .NET framework? Alternatively, there is the entity framework... and further afield from the Microsoft Camp is NHibernate. Ideally, any additional suggestions made should be free or open source. I have seen Telerik's ORM but this of course, is a commercial product. I can get the definitions/benefits of each ORM myself by doing a Google search, but I was just interested in peoples opinions as to which ORM seems to work best for them (even if it is none of the above).

    Does anyone have any experience with the RadWindow wpf control from Telerik? My problem is that when I open a RadWindow and minimize my application then when I maximize the application the RadWindow is not visible. I can use alt+tab to get the RadWindow in front again, but I would really like to avoid having to do this. I'm doing the following to display the RadWindow: this.theWindow.ShowDialog(); Where theWindow is an instance of a class that inherits from RadWindow. Any ideas?

  • Find Nearest Object

    I have a fairly sizable game engine created, and I'm adding some needed features, such as this, how do I find the nearest object from a list of points? In this case, I could simply use the Pythagorean theorem to find the distance, and check the results. I know I can't simply add x and y, because that's the distance to the object, if you only took right angle turns. However I'm wondering if there's something else I could do? I also have a collision system, where essentially I turn objects into smaller objects on a smaller grid, kind of like a minimap, and only if objects exist in the same gridspace do I check for collisions, I could do the same thing, only make the gridspace larger to check for closeness. (rather than checking every. single. object) however that would take additional setup in my base class and clutter up the already cluttered object. TL;DR Question: Is there something efficient and accurate that I can use to detect which object is closest, based on a list of points and sizes?

    hi, i know this question have been mentioned alot here but mine is a little more updated, now with ASP.net 4 and new Ajax client templating plus JASON services. so if i got all these new capabilities will i really need server side controls as long as i can bind on client side, create data-views on client side heck i can even use data-context and apply CRUD operations on clients side. so i actually i wont need button_click server side event or what so ever... i am asking this because i own some commercial Controls like Telerik and Component art and they both offer client side operations ow but still i am confused as to my knowledge creating these controls will still have to go through Page Life cycle please advise me.

  • Detecting Idle Time with Global Mouse and Keyboard Hooks in WPF

    Years and years ago I wrote this blog post about detecting if the user was idle or active at the keyboard (and mouse) using a global hook. Well that code was for .NET 2.0 and Windows Forms and for some reason I wanted to try the same in WPF and noticed that a few things around the keyboard and mouse hooks didn’t work as expected in the WPF environment. So I had to change a few things and here’s the code for it, working in .NET 4. I took the liberty and refactored a few things while at it and here’s the code now.   • jQuery Masonry – the answer to vertical flow layout

    “Masonry is a layout plugin for jQuery. Think of it as the flip side of CSS floats. Whereas floating arranges elements horizontally then vertically, Masonry arranges elements vertically then horizontally according to a grid.   • How do you implement a combobox filter using AJAX in ASP.NET?

    To save some time on discussing my problem you could check the demo below: http://demos.telerik.com/aspnet-ajax/combobox/examples/functionality/filteringcombo/defaultcs.aspx I already checked the ListBoxExtender on the Ajax Control Toolkit but it wouldn't give me fine results. What I want to do is to filter a listbox which is populated by over 3000 records from the database upon typing. It should not only filter the listbox with the starting letters but also the group of characters which could be found in between each item on the list. The list is a list of Item Name as a value and an Item Code as the key.
