• Cyrus IMAP: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused

  I'm working on setting up a Cyrus 2.2 IMAP server on Ubuntu Server 9.04. If I telnet from the server itself: # telnet localhost imap I get: * OK IMAP Cyrus IMAP4 v2.2.13-Debian-2.2.13-14ubuntu3 server ready Which is what I should be seeing. If I try from another machine on the network: telnet 192.168.5.122 imap I get: telnet: Unable to connect to remote host: Connection refused To the best of my knowledge, there is no firewall running on the box. I've tried restarting the saslauthd and cyrus2.2 daemons, with no effect. What else can I try?

• How can I prevent OpenVPN from clobbering local route?

  I have a local network on 192.168.1.0 with netmask 255.255.255.0. When I connect to a VPN though OpenVPN (as a client), it pushes a route for 192.168.1.0 that clobbers the existing one, making my local network inaccessible. I don't to access anything on 192.168.1.0 on the remote machine; I'd like to just ignore it, while accepting the other routes that are pushed. My client is Ubuntu 10.10. How can I skip the one offending route?

• Exim4 delivery to parent domain.

  I've set up an ubuntu server 9.1 system with exim4 as a relay for e-mail on my network. I've told exim that it is part of a subdomain: sub.domain.com I can test and deliver messages fine to my gmail accounts. I cannot get exim4 to sent messages to [email protected] though. The error received in the logs shows that exim thinks it should be delivering messages for domain.com to localhost instead of the actual MX for domain.com Is there an easy way to modify the debconf update-exim4.conf.conf so that is has the relay_to_domains capability?

• Cannot run SSH or send commands to /etc/init.d/ssh

  When I attempt to execute any commands such as /etc/init.d/ssh restart or /etc/init.d/ssh start, I get no output. It just goes to the next command line (Ubuntu Hardy). I can even pass in junk parameters such as /etc/init.d/ssh asldkfjalskfdj and i get no warnings or error messages, it just goes to the next line. I can check in my processes: lsof -i :22 and don't see my ssh process. I also don't see my SSH process when i run: netstat -na --inet Any troubleshooting suggestions?

• How to configure Apache (sites-available vs httpd.conf)

  Hi, I'm brand new to Apache so this might be a stupid question. I've been trying to follow a few basic tutorials explaining how to get Apache up and running (on ubuntu, running on Amazon). I've mostly come up blank, because all the tutorials told me to configure httpd.conf (to add DocumentRoot, etc.). I've now stumbled across one tutorial that told me to add site configurations to the sites-available directory (under /etc/apache), and then symlink to it from sites-enabled. Configuring this way seems to work. But now I'm confused - how am I supposed to configure Apache? Most tutorials still seem to say that I should be using httpd.conf. Which one should I be using? What's the difference? Why are all the tutorials "wrong" (if they are)? Thanks!

• Configuring Mail Relay

  I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10 with Postfix and Webmin. I have created virtual hosts for 3 domains following this serverfault.com answer. But the mail isn't relaying out to the world. I have 3 domains tied into my DNS in webmin, as well as inside DNS clicked Mail Server and followed that instruction using this article on the web. The domains and the web servers work just fine. I also have FTP working just fine. So, the remaining problem I have is mail. Can't forward mail out to a Gmail account for some reason. Note I'm just trying to do the "easy version" of Postfix config and if your answer is in Webmin-ease, that would help me. However, I can edit a text file if you suggest.

• stunnel: SSL-to-SSL? (for smtp/imap)

  Hello, How can I configure stunnel to accpet SSL connections, and connect then to an SSL port on a different server? Here is my setup: Our ISP's server, "Mail Server", supports smtp/imap over SSL. (Not starttls. Just over ssl.) But, I have a bunch of client machines that will only trust a specific, internal, root certificate. Thus, they can not connect to "Mail Server". For these client machines, I'd like to make a dedicated "Mail Tunnel" host that uses stunnel to listen with an in-house signed SSL certificate, and just forward data to "Mail Server" using a 2nd SSL connection. Can this be done? What would be the specific steps for Ubuntu Server 10.10? (I'm not too familiar with persistent service configuration.) Thank you

• sudo: cd: command not found when trying to get to /var/log/apache2

  I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 and am having issues getting to the log files in /var/log/apache2 I can cd to most other places (I haven't tried every single file, obviously) but when I try to get to the above directory, I get the error message sudo: cd: command not found ... I've just tried something else and I can't cd when used in conjunction with sudo. I can use sudo when doing things like apt-get but it seems I can't change directory when using sudo. I haven't been on this server for a while but I know I used to be able to do this.

• Gnome keyboard shortcuts dysfunctional after waking up from sleep

  Hello, I am using Ubuntu 9.10 on my Thinkpad T61. Very often after the system woke up from sleep, all the gnome shortcuts went dead (no effect when key combinations pressed). Things like "Alt+F4, Alt+TAB" are dead; things like Ctrl+C/Ctrl+V are OK; buttons such as volume up/down also OK; I tried to Google for answers but wasn't lucky enough. Any idea how to solve it? Thanks! If it's not preventable, can I at least restore them without restarting the session?

• Is there any way I can use two monitors in the console in Linux?

  I have recently become the proud owner of two monitors in my workspace. (Ok not owner, but you know what I mean) and I'd like to use both of them at once. Problem is, I much much prefer to use a Linux Server console over a desktop environment. The graphics card on the machine is a GTX295 (don't ask why, it's a long story.) so I essentially have two graphics cards. Each has a DVI output. Is there any way I can get the console to stretch across two screens? Or will I have to install a desktop Ubuntu for this to work?

• Ubuntu and Belkin N150 f6d4050 Wireless USB adapter v2

  I'm new to Ubuntu, and I'm trying to get my Belkin USB adapter to work. There are plenty of discussions out there already about this, but none really helped me out. Here's what I've done - Installed ndiswrapper Installed ndisgtk Installed the driver (rt2870.inf) via ndisgtk ndisgtk reported that the driver was installed and the hardware was present. The green light on the adapter is solid green, which I assume means that Ubuntu is aware of it's presence. However, when I click the little wireless symbol at the navigation bar, there's no option to choose my adapter (assuming that it's supposed to show up there...)   Hello All, Using upgrade manager I upgraded my 8.x LTS installation to 10.4. After rebooting the system failed encountered an error and dropped into the recovery console. It appeared to be a problem caused by ureadahead as described here: http://ubuntuguide.net/howto-fix-ureadahead-problem-after-upgrading-to-ubuntu-10-04. So I renamed ureadahead.conf to ureadahead.moved (after remounting the partition rw). this did not help so I renamed the file back again. After rebooting the following error appears: ureadahead terminated with status 5. udev_monitor_new_from_netlink: error getting socket: Invalid Argument mountall:mountall.c:3204 assertion failed in main: udev_monitor = udev_monitor_new_from_netlink(udev,"udev") init: mountall main process (2532) killed by ABRT signal.   Even though I'm sitting next to it, I log into my Ubuntu 10.04 LTS system via NX Free Edition from another system at the moment (this is temporary, not worth buying a KVM for). Curiously, though, when I do that Gnome's auto-mounting fails for CD/DVD media (I haven't tried other kinds) with a "Not Authorized" error. For instance here's what happens when I put the Ubuntu 10.04 LTS installation CD in: This does not happen if I log into it locally (not via NX) with the same user account. When using NX, I can mount the media if I go to mount directly: tjc@midnight:~$ sudo mkdir /media/dvd tjc@midnight:~$ sudo mount -r -t iso9660 /dev/sr0 /media/dvd tjc@midnight:~$ ls /media/dvd autorun.inf casper dists install isolinux md5sum.txt pics pool preseed README.diskdefines ubuntu wubi.exe ...which, along with the "not authorized" error, suggests some kind of permissions problem to me (doh). What I find odd is that the same user is involved in both cases (local and via NX). I'm new to Ubuntu on the desktop (used it and other distros on servers for years), so I'm afraid I don't know how this auto-mounting is happening. I think it's handled by the gvfs package and its daemon, but that's about as far as I got (and perhaps I've taken a left turn even getting that far). Although I can work around it with mount, does anyone know how I might get auto-mounting to work?

• Permission denied when running Rails app in VirtualBox Ubuntu guest with files on Windows host

  I think I'm close to having my dev environment set up exactly the way I want, but one final snag remains. I'm running VirtualBox on a Windows 7 64bit host, with my dev enviroment inside a Ubuntu 12.04 guest. I want to keep the files for my projects on the host filesystem - partly so I can access them when the Ubuntu guest is not running, but also so I can use Tortoise and other Windows based tools (cough Photoshop), and it also eases my backup scheme somewhat. So I've got a folder "Rails" on my NTFS drive, which I've shared (Samba) from the host with a user specifically created for the Ubuntu guest. The mount point has been set up and an entry added to fstab (cifs), using a credentials file and the options iocharset=utf8,mode=0777,dir_mode=07??77 This mounts fine and my Ubuntu user has both read and write permissions to the contents. But when I try to start my Rails app I get permission errors on any files the app needs to write to (e.g. the log file) - why is that? Are there any major conceptual flaws with this approach? Would I be better off using the VBox "shared folders" function?

• Running gdb on Ubuntu 9.10 Apache2 Install

  Hi all, I am trying to run gdb to debug my Ubuntu 9.10 Apache2 install and having a couple of problems: It seems like the package installed by Ubuntu for Apache2 does not include debugging symbols; is there a different version of the package I should be using for developing/debugging? When I try to run gdb, I get an error that looks to be caused by some missing environment variable. Are there additional options I should pass to "run" to get this to work? • How to SSH to guest ubuntu OS in vmplayer4

  I have installed vmplayer4.0.4 on Windows7, and install ubuntu12.04 as Guest OS. Basically i have two problems: Default vmplayer use NAT for network access. I could ping the guest OS from the Host OS. But how could i access the Guest OS from outside the Host OS? If i change to Bridged Mode, sure the Guest Ubuntu OS could get DHCP ip in the same subnet as Host OS. But i could not ping the Guest OS from the Host OS, or vice versa, even if i disable the iptables firewall on Ubuntu Guest OS like following: iptables -F iptables -X iptables -t nat -F iptables -t nat -X iptables -t mangle -F iptables -t mangle -X iptables -P INPUT ACCEPT iptables -P FORWARD ACCEPT iptables -P OUTPUT ACCEPT I could not figure it out, could anyone help on this issue?   I work with Ubuntu 10.04 everyday. Several days ago, when I release command sudo apt-get install .... it run very good, no error. I also able to open websites with my browser with no proxy. But, today, I got error. Every time I release the command, the connection redirected to an IP in my local network. I can see it in the terminal window. Several days ago I tried to connect to the internet throught the IP, by SSH tunneling. But I forget what I have done and there is no way home. • cups log kills ubuntu 12.04 and sudoer permissions changed

  I am using Ubuntu 12.04 as a desktop and recently had a weird crash with the log file for cups filling up the entire drive and not letting me back in, also what changed was /var/lib/sudo had changed from root to peter (me) I didn't make this change - I checked the history! I set the sudoers back to root and capped the max size for cups log Anyone had a similar experience? • Configuring WPA WiFi in Ubuntu 10.10

  I am trying to configure my wireless network on my laptop running Ubuntu 10.10 and am having a bit of difficulty. I am a complete Linux newb, but want to learn it, hence the reason I'm trying to set this up. Here's the vitals: It is a Gateway 600 YG2 laptop. It was previously running Windows XP, but I installed Ubuntu 10.10 in place of it (not a dual boot, I removed XP altogether). I have an old wireless card that I'm trying to resurrect. I haven't really used the card in a couple years, but it seems to still work, I just can't connect to my home's wireless network. The card is a Linksys WPC11 v2.5. When I plug it in, Ubuntu recognizes the network, but won't connect to it. My home network uses WPA encryption and the only connection type that Ubuntu's network manager is giving me is WEP and then it asks for a key -- I have no idea what that key should be. So, basically, I'm asking, is there a way I can instead connect through WPA? I've tried creating a new connection in network manager, but that won't work, it keeps falling back to the WEP connection and asking me for a key. I have tried to install the XP driver using ndiswrapper but I don't know if that's working or not. Is there a way to tell if: A) the card is working as it should B) the correct drivers are installed (again, I installed the XP one using ndiswrapper NET8180.INF, but I'm not sure what to do next) Any help would be appreciated.
