  • jQuery mousemove performance

    Hi, When I bind a mousemove event to an element it is working smoothly with every browser except Internet Explorer. With IE the CPU usage is way too much and some associated things (eg. tooltip) are ugly. Is there any way I could rid of the performance problem? (yeah I know, don't use IE :))

  • Design pattern question: encapsulation or inheritance

    Hey all, I have a question I have been toiling over for quite a while. I am building a templating engine with two main classes Template.php and Tag.php, with a bunch of extension classes like Img.php and String.php. The program works like this: A Template object creates a Tag objects. Each tag object determines which extension class (img, string, etc.) to implement. The point of the Tag class is to provide helper functions for each extension class such as wrap('div'), addClass('slideshow'), etc. Each Img or String class is used to render code specific to what is required, so $Img->render() would give something like <img src='blah.jpg' /> My Question is: Should I encapsulate all extension functionality within the Tag object like so: Tag.php function __construct($namespace, $args) { // Sort out namespace to determine which extension to call $this->extension = new $namespace($this); // Pass in Tag object so it can be used within extension return $this; // Tag object } function render() { return $this->extension->render(); } Img.php function __construct(Tag $T) { $args = $T->getArgs(); $T->addClass('img'); } function render() { return '<img src="blah.jpg" />'; } Usage: $T = new Tag("img", array(...); $T->render(); .... or should I create more of an inheritance structure because "Img is a Tag" Tag.php public static create($namespace, $args) { // Sort out namespace to determine which extension to call return new $namespace($args); } Img.php class Img extends Tag { function __construct($args) { // Determine namespace then call create tag $T = parent::__construct($namespace, $args); } function render() { return '<img src="blah.jpg" />'; } } Usage: $Img = Tag::create('img', array(...)); $Img->render(); One thing I do need is a common interface for creating custom tags, ie I can instantiate Img(...) then instantiate String(...), I do need to instantiate each extension using Tag.     Hi, I have to manage XML documents and Strings in my app. In terms of efficiency and memory usage, will a collection like ArrayList be much more expensive than String[]? Also, I could store the content as a regular String or XML. Is working with XML also more expensive? (When I say expensive, I am referring to the use of system resources.)     I managed to get this code to compile with out error. But somehow it did not return the strings that I wrote inside file1.txt and file.txt that I pass its path through str1 and str2. My objective is to use this open source library to measure the similarity between strings contains inside 2 text files. Inside the its Javadoc, its states that ... public static java.lang.StringBuffer fileToString(java.io.File f) private call to load a file and return its content as a string. Parameters: f - a file for which to load its content Returns: a string containing the files contents or "" if empty or not present Here's is my modified code trying to use the FileLoader function, but fails to return the strings inside the file. The end result keeps on returning me the "" .   • Profile memory-performance for part of an rails project

    I want to test the profile usage of an important library-class of my rails-project. It uses ActiveRecord so I need all rails dependencies to profile it. As far as I know, I need a patched ruby (rubygc) so script/profile and script/benchmark can track memory usage. I tried to follow this official guide to patch the source code of ruby 1.8.6 (p399) and 1.8.7 (p248), but both fail with the following message: patching file gc.c Hunk #2 succeeded at 50 with fuzz 2 (offset 2 lines). It's name is "chain" for now, and here is a usage example; chain("Hello World") (print) // evaluates print function by passing "Hello World" object. (console.log,"Optional","Parameters") (returnfrom) // returns "Hello World" It looks lispy but behaves very different since it's coded in a C based language, I don't know if there is a name for this idiom and I couldn't any name more suitable than "chain". Therefor I need to have two ruby installations (for the same version 1.8.7), each one pointing to a different set of .so files. How can I do that? Gemset usage is already too late because library binding is done when rvm install installs a ruby version.

    I know inline Javascript is frowned upon and with the new on-the-fly Javascript compressors that check for idle/unused function usage and omit the unused code, it seems good practice to have all your Javascript in an external file. My question is, in situations like FOUC (flash of unstyled content) which usually require little snippets of code right before the closing </body> tag, is there a JQuery resolution that would serve the same purpose, but from a remote Javascript file linked in the <head> of the document?
