• Installing a .NET framework on Windows 7?

  I just switched to windows 7 from Vista and a lot of programs/games don't work anymore. The issue is that some games need a specific .NET framework version. when I try to install that it says that I should turn on/off windows features. I go to that and I find .NET framework in the list and tried both checking it and unchecking it. Both don't work and I still get the message that I need to turn on/off that thing. Any suggestion please? I have Windows 7 Ultimate 32-bit.

• Activating Windows 7 generates error code 0xc004F061

  I got a new SSD and wanted to start over with Windows 7 on that disk. I did a clean install (my mistake) on the SSD and just went passed the activation part (left the key blank). Now that I have my system all setup, configured, files pulled back from backup, and ready to go, I'd like to activate Windows 7. However, I now get this error: The following failure occurred while trying to use the product key: Code: 0xC004F061 Description: The Software Licensing Service determined that this specified product key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installations. Do I really need to wipe my system again, install Windows Vista, and then do the Windows 7 upgrade in order to use my upgrade key? Is there some kind of work around?

I saw similar posts (such is Simplest VPN setup for iphone on Debian Linux?) but I haven't seen answer which will help me. Most of our client machines (whic are connecting to OpenVPN) are Windows 7 & Vista. Now I have to add several iphone and ipad users. How to accomplish that task?   I have Dell Optiplex 745 with Windows 7 installed on it. I'm trying to use the Windows XP audio driver as Windows 7 drivers aren't available for Optiplex 745 and Windows Vista driver is displaying that it's not compatible with my hardware. When I try to install the Windows XP audio driver, it's displaying an error HDA audio bus driver is required and not found The installation fails then. I have researched thourghly and used many drivers but my audio is not working at all. I was also told that it might be a problem with my hardware – that is, a problem with the board.

• Is (Ubuntu) Linux file copying algorithm better than Windows 7?

  Windows Copying is a real mess ever since Windows Vista. Even Microsoft claims they've improved the performance, from a user perspective, it's not quite visible. Even with single file the copying window appears too much time for 'Calculating' and then finishing the copy(Even after 100% completion some times the dialog remains active). At the same time, I was backing up some files in Ubuntu Linux. I felt it's really fast. Might be a feeling caused by faster UI updates. I read an informative post from Jeff Atwood few years back on Windows File Copying. but what my specific questions are Is (Ubuntu) Linux file performance is better than Windows-7? Are both algorithms, Windows and Linux is making use of multiple threads and pipelining mechanism to improve the speed? If yes, which one is better?

  I'm having an issue...My system specs is: Intel i7 960 6GM Corair XMS RAM ATI HD5970 graphics card Intel dx58so motherboard Cooler Master HAF 922 case 1.5TB Seagate hard drive Windows Vista x86 (32-bit). Here is my issue: when I go to AMD/ATI website to update my graphics card - it doesn't. when I type DxDiag and then click on display it tell me my version is 8.17.0 and its on 10.10.0 for the latest version. How can I get 8.17.0 too 10.10.0? I figure it would have done that after I updated the driver for my graphics card. Thanks.

• Powershell Set-Acl fails

  While working on a little backup script I try to change the ACL of a file using Set-Acl in Powershell 1 on Vista and always get the following error message: Set-Acl : The security identifier is not allowed to be the owner of this object. This error persists even if I go a minimal script: $acl = Get-Acl $sourcepath$file $acl |format-list Set-Acl -path $sourcepath$file -AclObject $acl Does anyone know the reason for this error? Obviously I'm not changing the ownership of the file... BTW: What I ultimately want to achieve is to reduce all access rights to ReadAndExecute. • How are file permissions applied for shared drives?

  I have two computers: A (running Windows Vista) B (running XP). I shared C: on computer A (as \\A\C ), and require a username (X) plus pw to access it. If I browse the the share \A\C on computer B, after entering username+pw I can access most folders, but one folder "\\A\C\F" gives me "permission denied". I looked at that folder's permissions on A, and it has full access permissons for all "Administrators". I use the account "A\X" to authenticate when accessing the share on A. X is a user account (on A) that is an "Administrator" according to Window's user management. Still, I cannot access this folder. If I explicitly add the "X" account to the accounts that may access folder F (under Properties / Security), I can access it without problems. I do not understand why I need to explicitly grant permission for X to get access to F. Is it not enough that X is an Administrator account?

• Problem connecting with RDP between Mac and Win2k3 server

  I have an iMac running Mac OS X 10.5.8 and the RDP Connection Client 2.0.1. http://salle.dyndns.org/misc/rdp%5Fproblem1.png When I try to connect to a Windows 2003 Server on the same network I get a dialog saying "Remote Desktop Connection cannot verify the identity of the computer that you want to connect to". • Problem accessing the remote working space on my new SBS 2008 box

  This supposedly easy to install OS is starting to drive me nuts... SYMPTOMS: When trying to connect to the remote workplace I get (and ignore) the security warning because I am currently testing with the self issued certificate. After loggin in the remote workplace's main screen displays but the images on it do not load. When I try to click the email link I am thrown back to the login screen. If I try the login to exchange directly by typing in the remote.mydomain.com/owa address I get a 403 error that I am denied access. The problem occurs on both a vista and a win 7 machine. It seems that some security setting is playing tricks with me. How can I troubleshoot this?

• need help in backing up 2 partitions to flash drive(Acronis)

  I'm trying it on virtual box and installed Acronis 2010. The backup was successful but when I checked on the backup which is on my flash drive. Here's my problem: Ive installed firefox before the backup, but the program files folder in the flash drive has no folder called firefox. How do I restore the the 2 partitions using the backup. What I did was to: Go to tools & utilities in Acronis then chose clone disk. Selected the source and destination(flash drive). Then I restart, the backup began. First with the first partition which has xp installed and the 2nd was vista lite. What do I do to restore it: I only got these folders on the root of the flash drive: Documents and settings Program files Windows BOOTSECT.BAK

• Is there a way to force/manage file locking in windows?

  I have a 2 Windows machines networked and I am having trouble with simultaneous access to files. I would like only one user to be able to open a file at a time, which I thought was automatic, using file locks.... if the program used to access the file is locking the file. I believe the problem I am having is some of the programs I use, don't lock the file, and there for can be modified simultaneously by multiple users, which is very much not desired. Currently I am having this problem with only two computers, although as soon as I can figure out a solution to this problem the network is going to be expanded to 6 computers, which will include Windows 7, Vista, and XP, as well as a central file server (Samba). Is there a way to ensure that all files opened in windows get locked? Any suggestions are appreciated, thanks.

• Where might I be having problems with making web server acessable (XAMPP)

  I've installed XAMPP and it seems to be working - sort of. It will serve pages if I access it via http://localhost or 127.0.0.1 but not if I use the actual IP address I have. I thought it might be a firewall issue, so I turned off the firewall and the issue still remains. I don't have enough experience to know where to look next, so I thought I might get some advice here. Running on Vista. The error I'm actually getting it "Timed Out". I've had XAMPP running on this machine prior, but I've had to reinstall my OS/new hard drive ... and I can't seem to get it working.

• How do I usb tether my Cyanogen modded G1's internet connection to my Toshiba Tecra 8000 running Xubuntu?

  I have usb-tethering enabled in my phone. It works fine with Vista. When I plug my phone into my Tecra 8000 laptop running Xubuntu, dmesg shows: "usb 1-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 8". I see that the OS has detected it as a storage device, but I can't get it to function correctly as a network device. /dev/us* shows no usb0, but it does show /dev/usbdev1.1_ep00 /dev/usbdev1.1_ep81 /dev/usbdev1.8_ep00 ... usbdev1.8_ep83 I could just use the wireless tether app for android, but I can't get my Netgear wg511 v2 (made in China) wireless card to work in this laptop either. But that's another post for later.

  I need to run excel macro daily. I scheduled it with Windows Scheduler and it worked fine until I had to change my password. I wonder if it's possible to have a task scheduled without a password? As alternative we have third party scheduling software, but this software cannot launch excel. The tech support said that since excel has gui and scheduling software runs as service with "Allow to interact to Desktop" disabled, it cannot launch excel. Also tech support mentioned that "Allow to interact to Desktop" is not supported as of Vista. I totally trust tech support guy, I just need a work around that would make my network administrator and me happy. Regards.

When I print from my Windows XP the margins are all ok, but when I print from my Windows 7 laptop the top margin is 2x larger for the same document, and as a result the bottom is cropped. • 7.0.1 and Photoshop openGL requirements

  Hi, I'm running Workstation 7.0.1 on a 64-bit Linux host, with a Vista guest, and the Aero theme works a treat - full marks for getting that working! However, when running Photoshop there are some operations (like interactive image rotation) that seem to require graphics support that VMWare doesn't have - attempting to do these operations returns an error that the functionality "only works with OpenGL enabled windows". It seems that it needs OpenGL 2.0 and Shader Model 3.0 which I gather are supported under Workstation 7 - do I need to put in additional settings of some kind? I've updated to the right version of VMWare Tools, and the video driver is listed as "VMWare SVGA 3D (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM)". I see that in 6.5 there was an option to switch between the beta WDDM driver and the SVGAII driver, but I assume the features of both of these would have been merged into the standard driver in 7.0?   Hello, I'm having a major problem and I really need your help! I have a MacBook Air which has the NVidia 9400M. The problem is, when I connect it to an external projector Windows 7 (and Vista) only allow me to connect at 640x480. I need it to use the laptop to present at conferences, as such I need it to work on a number of different projectors - at the moment I need to use OSX and VMWare but it's painfully slow and really doesn't work. At the moment, I'm considering buying a new laptop :( Is there any way to override the screen resolutions provided? I've saw some information around EDID? Thanks Ben

• Windows 7: Use VirtualStore as user for own benefit?

  I've researched a bit and came to the understanding that VirtualStore is part of the new UAC feature in Vista/W7 which is the file system part of the transparent data redirection and redirects write access to folders like program files to C:\User\<username>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\ in lack of applications respecting the LUA principles. Now I'm interested if that kind of transparent redirection can also be used as a power to the user. Here's an example which comes to my mind: I install any kind of software to e.g. D:\Whatever\ThisAndThisApp\ and I set up things that, after initial installation, any write access to this folder is transparently redirected to e.g. D:\MyOwnVirtualStore\Whatever\ThisAndThisApp\file_only_writable_here.txt. Is this thinking too far or can I actually use that power of VirtualStore as a user on Windows 7? I'm using the Professional version of that matters.

• Recommendations for a cloud/hosted server environment that can run different Windows VMs?

  I currently have a colocated Win 2008 server that I use for hosting different windows VMs for testing: Win 2008, Win XP, Vista, Win7, Win 2000. I'd like to ditch the server and use something like Amazone AWS but the key thing is I need to be able to launch VMs for these different windows versions. AWS doesn't allow this currently. Can anyone recommend somewhere that I could use? The main reasons I want to get away from my own server are: administration: backup, windows updates, etc space: disk limitations mean I can't have all the VMs I want. I'd like to be able to pay for space incrementally. I'll typically only run 1-3 at a time but want lots of snapshots of different machines.

• What is the difference between Skip and Don't Copy buttons in Copy File dialog?

  This is a silly question. In Windows 7/Vista when a user trying to copy multiple file, it looks like he has five options: Copy and Replace Don't Copy Copy, but keep both files Skip Cancel the operation. It looks to me that option 2 (Don't Copy) is the same as 4 (Skip). However, it's kind of strange for Microsoft to put two buttons that perform the same action. I probably miss something. Could you please tell me what I'm missing?

• Reinstall Windows on mass computers

  At work there are about 40 DELL PC's - half of them are Windows Vista and other half are Windows 7. Some of the DELL PC's are 220s and 230s model. If I want to re-install Windows then I can use a Recovery/Recovery disk on any Dell PC's (220s or 230s). It take too long to complete the setup, for example - after re installing the Windows then I need to install the drivers, update windows, install IE9, create default users account and so on. It take about 3 hour to complete setup! I am looking for a solution Where I can create an Image of windows (with driver and completed setup) and then I use same Image it on any PC's at work? If one of the PC need reinstalling - I would like to reinstall via network (LAN) by grabbing the Image? Is there something that before booting into windows - computer check something via network which can download the Image?

• Remove Windows 7's limitation on number of concurrent tcp connections (http web requests)

  I have an application that tries to open as many http requests as possible (in order to stress test a proxy implementation) It seems to me that Win7 (SP1) may have a limitation on number of concurrent opened connection (it may be the so called half-open state if I'm not wrong). Is there something I can do for client ? and also I test using a vista PC that acts as a proxy server. It would be great if I could configure it to sustain at least 50 new connections initiated / second on client side and many more on server. I made the modification according to this technet article by setting TcpNumConnections = 150 but it doesn't make a difference. I still only see about 20 tcp sockets associated with my http client by using tcpview.

• How to enable the flash player plugin in IE8?

  I updated to IE8 the other day on my Vista laptop, mostly because Windows Update kept bugging me about it. As a Chrome user, I don't really care so much about IE8, but I do have to use it occaisionally to test website compatibility. At any rate, flash seems to be completely deactivated, and I don't see a place to re-enable it anywhere in the preferences. I've done a bit of googling on the issue, but only found information about how to disable flash, not how to actually enable it. I have the flash 10 debug player installed, and it works fine with Chrome and Firefox. What could be the matter?
