• putty ssh client become not responding frequently in windows 7

  with celeron processor and 512 MB ram windows 7 takes too much time even to open a folder in windows explorer. I connect to internet with GPRS modem. When I tried to connect with remote linux machine with putty ssh client. The problem is the putty becomes Not responding in 2 or 3 minutes. I've to connect again and putty goes Not responding again. When i tried in Safe mode with networking, GPRS modem is not even detected. the modem is USB data card. Is it possible load USB drive in safe mode of windows 7 or any other possibility to connect with remote machine via ssh

• second monitor wont display

  hi all my problem is this: i have one video card (radeon hd 4350) and 2 monitors (dell). the first monitor works using dvi-to-dvi. the second does not, using hdmi-to-dvi. the monitor does not register any input. however when i use vga-to-vga, the second monitor does work, with a typically low vga resolution. we have tested the hdmi-to-dvi cable, so why does the monitor not register any input? using windows vista. i have installed all the lastest drivers, done all the basic stuff etc. any help at all would be appreciated. thanks

• Ubuntu 9.10 freezes when HDMI port is connected

  I have a Sony Vaio FW350 with a HDMI output. I'm trying to use it under Ubuntu 9.10 with a LG LCD monitor 21,5'. The laptop has a Intel 4500 video card. I've tried two approaches: Boot the laptop with the HDMI cable connected and monitor turned on. Result: LCD Monitor keeps turned on but the whole screen is black and Ubuntu do not seem to be initializing. Boot Ubuntu until the end. I then connect the HDMI cable into the Laptop. The mouse and the whole system freezes. In both cases the only way to turn off the laptop is holding the power button. I've looked around the internet for similar problems, but only found workarounds for the same problem with VGA input, not HDMI. I also tried to use metacity before connecting the cable, but still got the same result. Any hints?

  I'm using 64-bit Ubuntu 12.04 and Windows 7 64 bit – dual boot on the same computer. Connecting to the same wireless network. And it turns out that on Windows I get a more stable and stronger signal than on Ubuntu. To my knowledge there's a router which serves as a gateway and then there's a cable connected to the router which goes further to ISP, so the results for both OS should be the same. I've tested the issue on both OSs at various times and it gave me the same result. The question is why? Why Ubuntu networking is worse than that of Windows?

• Can't connect printer wirelessly to linksys wrt54g using WPS

  I've already blown over 1/2 day on this. I keep checking and rechecking my router settings and they agree with what the documentation says for my brand new HP4620 printer. Supposedly I just tell the router to listen for connections and tell the printer to connect. It fails every time! Further, I have also read some opinions that when things are not configured correctly the linksys will disable WPS and it looks like that's happening as well. Further, it's causing other wireless devices in my house to lose there connectivity until I re-enable WPA networking on the router. Has anyone been here before? This is driving me crazy... -mark

• Can't connect to the internet in Windows Vista

  I have a Windows Vista computer which i have used for about 2 years without any issues. Recently, i started having problems connecting to the internet with this Vista computer. My other XP Computers are fine and can connect to the Internet. Regardless of wired or wireless connection, i am unable to get the Vista computer connected to the web. The Status remains "Limited" for IPv4 and IPv6. It also shows unidentified Public Network, and is able to connect to the router. However, there's a disconnection between the router and the internet. Any help will be greatly appreciated, i have been on this for 4 weeks now.

• Automatically Connecting to Hidden SSID WiFi Network

  My MacBook Pro will not automatically connect to a Wireless network with a hidden SSID. It makes me select the "Join Other Network..." in the Airport menu (in the system tray), where I need to input the name of the network, then security type, password and wait for it to connect. This is becoming increasingly annoying to have to do every time I come back to my desk. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5 and there doesn't seem to be an option to connect to a specific network, but rather "Preferred Networks." The only network I have set as Preferred that's in range is my home network, and it still doesn't automatically connect. Making the network publicly visible isn't under my control, so I'm stuck with what's currently in place.   I live in an apartment and some new guys have apparently moved into one of the apartments. They have been shamelessly hacking into my WiFi. Mine was initially a WEP encrypted network and out of laziness I just limited and reserved the IPS on my router for the people in my house. Yesterday I had to free up an IP for a guest in my house but before he could join the network these guys connected in. I have changed my encryption to WPA2 and hope they dont have the hardware/patience required to hack into it, but there are many wi-fi networks in my apartment most of which are secured using WEP. I don't really want to call the police on them. Is there any way to deter them from misusing other people's wi-fi ? I have gone through I think someone else has access to my wireless network. What next? but I have already taken the steps mentioned there.

• What would cause a single working website to not work on 1 out of 5 devices on a network?

  There is a specific website that loads up without problem on all machines on my network (both wired and wireless) except one laptop. This laptop is a Windows 7 machine that was just recovered using the recovery partition, so it is fresh. The site will not load in Firefox 3.6 or IE 8. The website is http://www.weightwacthers.com The site loads fine on my desktop, iPhone, and Droid, but not the laptop. In all my years in this business I've honestly never seen this happen. Also, 'Is it down for me or everyone' reports that it is indeed only me. What would cause this to happen?

• Netgear WNDR3700 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wi-Fi are segregated

  I have a Netgear WNDR3700 with both the 2.4GHz (B/G/N) and 5GHz (A/N) broadcasting. I'd assumed that devices connecting on either channel would work together without issues, but there are some devices (such as my iPhone 4 or HP wireless printer) that will only connect at 2.4GHz, and some that connect at 5GHz. However, it seems that they're segregated on the network, so a computer at 5GHz can't print to the printer, but the iPhone can. This is causing issues not just with printing, but with AppleTV and so on. Is there a way to have the router let these devices all talk to each other?

• After turning my monitor off and on, it will display only a white screen

  About a month after installing a new graphics card, I started encountering a rather frustrating problem. Namely, if I turn my monitor off for any significant length of time, then turn it back on, it displays only a white screen. Previously, restarting could fix the problem. However, after leaving the computer off last night, the problem persists. An internet search turned up this site; however, the monitor cable is not loose. As for the insides of the monitor - Well, I could poke around, but I risk making it worse if it's not the monitor. Any such instructions should be clear, detailed and include pictures. • Dealing with employees that use Hotspots? [closed]

  Recently a consultant revealed to me and my superiors that a particular department in my company had a tremendous decline in productivity over the past year. This department happened to mostly work with laptops and tablets and thus had wireless. Our barracuda did not display any vast amounts of internet entertainment and so I was initially puzzled by his statement. However he explained that more and more employees are using "hotspots" that when not broadcasted, become invisible to our network. So basically these people could connect to hotspots and watch youtube all day and we would never know it. The consultant also said that this was becoming an issue for many companies. So my question is, how can I detect invisible hotspots? I was browsing google and there are several different programs that can scan for such access points. But I am hoping to get a recommendation from the serverfault community. Thank you.

• Can I use my Belkin router as a repeater?

  I've got a brand new, unopened Belkin N600 DB router (yay 50% off sale), and I can't seem to figure out if I can use it as a repeater. As far as I can tell, it doesn't support DD-WRT or Tomato, but I'm wondering if there may be some way to rig it up to repeat Wifi. Also, I really need to know before I open it, because, being a bit tight on money at the moment, I'll probably sell it if I can't use it as a repeater. Finally, two caveats: I can't use the other wireless router for anything other than broadcasting straight from the modem (parents are paranoid about anything technological). I can't run ethernet to the second router due to the layout of the house. Thanks so much for the help everyone--if I'm being vague, tell me! EDIT: Also, the manual here is pretty useless on this topic as far as I can tell.

• How can I make my laptop use a phone as a wi-fi adapter?

  I have an HP Pavilion dv6400 series laptop with an NVidea chipset which is the subject of a class action lawsuit. The symptom (PDF) that I'm experiencing is that the system fails to recognize that there is a wireless adapter installed. It doesn't appear in Device Manager. In this question, I ask if there's a way to work around this problem. As an alternative, I'd like to see if there's a way to use an old Windows Mobile 5 phone that does not have cellular service (voice or data) as a Wi-Fi adapter. How can this be accomplished? The system is running Windows Vista Home and has the latest BIOS (F42) and Windows updates and drivers.

• College wifi works easily on Linux, but not on Windows

  In Linux: After connecting to the college wifi, going to the network login page logging in, the internet works perfectly as it should. In Windows: After connecting to the college wifi, going to the network login page, logging in, Windows shows "Internet access" and the wireless icon turns white. But still after that, regardless of the browser being used, attempting to accessing any page just shows "Sending request". It does work though after a lot of tries, but only in intervals. But when running Ubuntu 11.10 in VirtualBox, it works properly just like booting in Ubuntu, even if it isn't working on Windows. The college wifi service is really crappy and has been unable to solve this problem. I'm pretty sure there should be a solution for this, but what? What is it that Ubuntu is doing right and Windows isn't? Windows settings set to "Automatically detect settings" and no proxy server used.

On the other room i have a laptop which is connected through the router wirelessly.   I have some problems with my Dell Vostro 3350. I have to graphic card - Intel and ATI radeon 6470M. I have installed this driver. It's fresh installation of Windows 7. And my problem is that in device menager I can see in section graphic cards AMD Radeon HD 6490M and Intel(R) Graphics Family. Another thing is that I'm using two screens. And I want to use ATI readeon as default. At this moment I'm event not sure if ATI is working. Another strange thing is that when I run Catalyst Control Center in section Destkop Menagement i don't see nothing.

• Cisco WLAN Controller not pushing out DHCP addresses, what else could it be?

  On our Cisco WLAN Controller web interfaces, in Controller Interfaces, I have made a new interface with these settings: VLAN Identifier 202 IP Address 172.16.202.1 Netmask 255.255.255.0 Gateway 172.16.202.254 Primary DHCP Server 172.16.100.3 Secondary DHCP Server 172.16.100.2 Port: LAG I've also made a new WLAN and assigned it to the above interface. I have saved changes. But our wireless devices, although they seem to authenticate with the WLAN fine, they always get stuck on "obtaining DHCP address", so it seems the WLAN Controller isn't pushing out DHCP addresses to our devices. We do have a DHCP scope for the above in Windows Server 2008 R2 and everything there seems fine. If I connect a device with a static address (e.g. 172.16.202.10), it will connect. Stuck on what to do :(

• I have to manually enter the pwd when I login at school and when I come back home with my laptop (DELL E6410)

  I didn't have to do this the first 3 months of me going to school. My laptop used to be able to connect to my Home WiFi and school Wifi automatically then after the 3rd month something changed and eversince then I literally have to manually enter each of the Wifi passwords in each location each time I try to connect to their respective WLAN. I tried adding each WiFi networks in the "Manage wireless networks" section in the Network and Sharing Center but everytime I login to one of the location, the created network disappears and I did this more than once. I tried restoring the OS back but to no avail. Can someone please assist me on this issue. I'm not sure if this issue has been addressed in this website but I haven't seen any similar question in here. I appreciate any help anyone may be able to share.

• Problem with Lenovo x200s Wifi under Ubutu Karmic

  Hi, I have just gotten my Lenovo X200s laptop, and I am install Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic on it. The installation went through without a hitch, but I can't get my wifi to work. lspci | grep Network Produces the following results: 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LM Gigabit Network Connection (rev 03) 03:00.0 Network controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. • WIFI connection interfering with Windows Server 2003 Active Directory domain. (How to debug?)

I had to change our unnamed crappy ADSL router to a crappy Comtrend CT-5361 WiFi router, now every WiFi connection to the domain doesn't work correctly: Joining the domain is impossible (see related question) Logging into the domain takes ages Authentication usually fails Question: How to debug this and pinpoint the exact problem? I have no enough knowledge on either WiFi networks or on Active Directory to know which connections are made at which stages nor how to check what's happening at the wireless level to compare what should happen to what is happening. I'm looking for resources to learn what should be happening and tools to detect what is actually happening (I expect a sniffer should be enough, but if there are better, more specialized tools, that'd be great).

• Windows 7 treating my third monitor as an extension to my second rather than detecting it as a stand alone

  I am trying to attach a third monitor to my PC, however I am coming across a rather strange issue. Windows screen resolution is still only showing that I have two monitors connected, but the second has been extended over both the second and third monitors. Basically, it shows as the main display being a normal size, and the secondary as being twice as long as normal. I have my main connected via a the display port, and the second and third are using two of the three mini HDMI ports my video card provides. How do I get windows to accept my third monitor the same as it does my second?
