• Job Change Problem [closed]

  I joined an organisation in April 2010. I just changed my job in January 2012. I was previously working with Java. But in my current organisation, the work is not in java. They told me in the interview that the work will be use Java technology. But this is not the case. I dont want to lose my previous Java experience. And moreover, in my current company , I am working on a language which is not used anywhere. I want to change again. Can anyone please help and guide me that will there be any issue now in changing the job again.?

• The JCP Celebrates 15 Years in 2014

  The JCP Program is celebrating fifteen years of collaborative work from companies, academics, individual developers and not-for-profits from all over the world who have come together to develop Java technology through the JCP.  In June, we held a party at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, California in conjunction with the Silicon Valley Java User Group (SVJUG).   Devoxx 2013 has officially started! Looking forward to catching up with Java community member friends--old and new this week. Tuesday (today) the Hackergarten has returned to Devoxx!  There are Java EE 7 tables and Java SE 8 Lambda tables.  Kudos to Andres Almirey for organizing the event and to Arun Gupta and Stuart Marks for leading the activities -- awesome Adopt-a-JSR participation in action! Wednesday there is a JCP 'quickie' session How to Participate in the Future of Java Quickie at 13:35-13:50.  We will also have a chat with the OTN team afterward!  Wednesday evening at 21:00, join us for our BOF session with Martin Verburg and Johan Vos: JCP & Adopt-a-JSR Workshop BOF.

• Hack Fest Going Strong!

  Today was the first day of  the Hack Fest at Devoxx, the Java developer conference in Belgium.  The Hack Fest started with the Raspberry Pi & Leap Motion hands-on lab. Vinicius Senger introduced the Java Embedded, Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Java Champion Geert Bevin presented the Leap Motion, a controller sensing your hands and fingers to play games by controlling the mouse as an example. "Programmers are cooler than musicians because they can create entire universe using all senses" explained Geert In teams, participants started building applications using Raspberry Pi, sensors and relays. One team tested the performance of Tomcat, Java EE and Java Embedded Suite on the Raspberry Pi. Another used built an text animation using a LCD screen. Teams are using the Leap Motion to close and open programs on the desktop and other teams are using it as a game control.

• Oracle BPM and Open Data integration development

  Rapidly developing Oracle BPM application solutions with data source integration previously required significant Java and JDeveloper skills. Now using open source tools for open data development significantly reduces the coding needed.  Key tasks can be performed with visual drag and drop designing combined with menu selections entry and automatic form generation directly from XSD schema definitions. The architecture used is extremely lightweight, portable, open platform and scalable allowing integration with a variety of Oracle and non-Oracle data sources and systems. Two videos available on YouTube walk through the process at both an introductory conceptual level and then a deep dive into the programming needed using JDeveloper, Oracle BPM composer and Oracle WLS (WebLogic Server) along with the CAM editor and Open-XDX open source tools. Also available are coding samples and resources from the GitHub project page, along with working online demonstration resources on the VerifyXML site. Combining Oracle BPM with these open source tools provides a comprehensive simple and elegant solution set. Development times are slashed and rapid prototyping is enabled. Also existing data sources can be integrated using open data formats with either XML or JSON along with CRUD accessing via the Open-XDX Java component. The Open-XDX tool is a code-free approach where data mapping is configured as templates using visual drag and drop in the CAM Editor open source tool.  XML or JSON is then automatically generated or processed (output or input) and appropriate SQL statements created to support the data accessing.   Also included is the ability to integrate with fillable PDF forms via the XML templates and the Java PDF form filling library.  Again minimal Java coding is needed to associate the XML source content with the PDF named fields.  The Oracle BPM forms can be automatically generated from XSD schema definitions that are built from the data mapping templates.  This dramatically simplifies development work as all the integration artifacts needed are created by the open source editor toolset. The developer level video is designed as a tutorial with segments, hands-on demonstrations and reviews.  This allows developers to learn the techniques and approaches used in incremental steps. The intended audience ranges from data analysts to developers and assumes only entry level Java skills and knowledge.  Most actions are menu driven while Java coding is limited to simply configuring values and parameters along with performing builds and deployments from JDeveloper and Oracle WLS.   Additional existing Oracle online training resources can be referenced on Oracle BPM and WLS that cover other normal delivery aspects such as user management and application deployment.

• Is diversifying my programming knowledge good?

  I have skills in so many programming languages, such as Java, C++, C, Obj-C, Scala, Haskell, and Matlab. However I don't know/like web programming at all. I also get bored very quickly. Thus I haven't work with any Java projects that's bigger than say 20-30 java files. I'm finishing off my degree and I want to work as a developer, particularly in mobile area. Do I have enough skills to be recruited by good companies?

I'm able to connect but the problem is, that my IP being changed to "localip" not "remote ip". • Two Weeks To Go, Still Time to Register

  Yes, it's now only two weeks to the start of the 17th JavaOne conference! This will be my ninth JavaOne, I came fairly late to this event, attending for the first time in 2002.  Since then I've missed two conferences, 2006 for the birth of my son (a reasonable excuse I think) and 2010 for reasons we'll not go into here.  I have quite the collection of show devices, I've still got the WoWee robot, the HTC phone for JavaFX, the programmable pen and the Sharp Zaurus.  The only one I didn't keep was the homePod music player (I wonder why?) JavaOne is a special conference for many reasons, some of which I list here: A great opportunity to catch up on the latest changes in the Java world.  This is not just in terms of the platform, but as much about what people are doing with Java to build new and cool applications. A chance to meet people.  We have these things called BoFs, which stands for "Birds of a Feather", as in "Birds of a feather, flock together".  The idea being to have sessions where people who are interested in the same topic don't just get to listen to a presentation, but get to talk about it.  These sessions are great, but I find that JavaOne is as much about the people I meet in the corridors and the discussions I have there as it is about the sessions I get to attend. Think outside the box.  There are a lot of sessions at JavaOne covering the full gamut of Java technologies and applications.  Clearly going to sessions that relate to your area of interest is great, but attending some of the more esoteric sessions can often spark thoughts and stimulate the imagination to go off and do new and exciting things once you get back. Get the lowdown from the Java community.  Java is as much about community as anything else and there are plenty of events where you can get involved.  The GlassFish party is always popular and for Java Champions and JUG leaders there's a couple of special events too. Not just all hard work.  Oracle knows how to throw a party and the appreciation event will be a great opportunity to mingle with peers in a more relaxed environment.  This year Pearl Jam and Kings of Leon will be playing live.  Add free beer and what more could you want? So there you have it.  Just a few reasons for why you want to attend JavaOne this year.  Oh, and of course I'll be presenting three sessions which is even more reason to go.  As usual I've gone for some mainstream ("Custom Charts" for JavaFX) and some more 'out there' ("Java and the Raspberry Pi" and "Gestural Interfaces for JavaFX").  Once again I'll be providing plenty of demos so more than half my luggage this year will consist of a Kinect, robot arm, Raspberry Pis, gamepad and even an EEG sensor. • If all programming languages are Turing Complete then why do we have language wars?

  There are language wars saying one programming language is better than other.. Consider Lisp and Java; and we can argue that the meta programming capabilities of Lisp is better than that of Java. But that does not mean Java cannot have meta programming capabilities without being another dialect of Lisp. Basically all programming languages are Turing Complete. So doesn't that mean we could solve any solvable problem in all those programming languages?

• How to associate an icon with a shell script?

  Environment: Ubuntu 11.10 I have a Java application as a jar file. I have created a batch file that contains the following line: java -jar ~/MyApp.jar When I execute this batch file, the Java application works as expected. To create a desktop link, I copied this batch file into my "Desktop" folder. This results in an icon appearing on the desktop. However, the icon shows "Java" on it. I would like to associate a different icon to this desktop link. Would appreciate it if someone can point me in the right direction.

• Tomcat's connection pool opens only 20 connections to mysql

  I have a java application with following line in context.xml <Resource driverClassName="com.mysql.jdbc.Driver" maxActive="100" maxIdle="30" initialSize="10" maxWait="7000" name="jdbc/app" password="pass" type="javax.sql.DataSource" url="jdbc:mysql://dbhost:3306/dbname?autoReconnect=true" username="user" validationQuery="SELECT 1" removeAbandoned="true" removeAbandonedTimeout="30" logAbandoned="true" /> In mysql 'show variables' tells me that max_connections is 151. Still, use information_schema; select count(*) from processlist where User = 'user'; never shows me more than 20 connections. • Jazoon, JAX California, and Brazilian week - it's conference season again

  Sparky is on the road again with GlassFish presence around the world in multiple conferences. This past week Jazoon in Zurich had Java EE, GlassFish, JAX-RS, Servlet, JSF all covered while JAX in California also had a good number of Java EE-related talks (see this Java EE 7 article). FISL, the largest Open Source conference in Brazil (7500 participants last year) is coming up this week with OpenJDK, GlassFish, JavaFX, NetBeans, Java EE 7, and of course JDK 7 all covered by subject matter experts. Expect most of these talks and possibly demos to show up here on TheAquarium, on slideshare or on our YouTube channel.
