• Proper DNS records for handling subdomains and missing subdomains

  I'm trying to craft DNS records to support: Explicitly defined subdomains, e.g. ftp.mydomain.com A missing subdomain that redirects to www. Implicitly defined subdomains, e.g. <some user entered value>.mydomain.com For 1, I'm using CNAME records. All seems to be working well. For 2, I'm using an A record, @ -> 123.456.789.012. Worked well. For 3, I ran into some trouble. I tried adding another A record, * -> 123.456.789.012. This appeared to work initially, but it broke #2. i.e. now browsing to mydomain.com doesn't redirect to www.mydomain.com. I tried adding the CNAME record @ -> 123.456.789.012, but my DNS admin tool won't accept it because it's saying the @ is already in use, even though I deleted the A record using it. Am I configuring this incorrectly? What am I doing wrong?

• Extract sender activity from postfix logs for auditing user

  We have a mail user on our postfix server that was using the company mail to send compromising information to the competence. I've been asked to make a report of the actions for that user in the last time. There are tools like pflogsumm and others that can extract statistic data, but I haven't so far find anything useful to get all the info for a user because the data is in multiple lines. I'd like to get something like this: For the sent mail 11/11/11 00:00:00 [email protected] -> [email protected] 11/11/11 00:00:01 [email protected] -> [email protected] For the received mail 10/10/11 00:00:00 [email protected] -> [email protected] 10/10/11 00:00:01 [email protected] -> [email protected] I know I can do a script by myself, but matching the postfix ID for every mail is not something that can be made with a simple grep, and I've a lot of mail history that I have to recheck distributed among diferent files and so on. The source log is the standard postfix format, for example this one... The documentation is not very clear on this. Am I missing something? More importantly, for a real-world deployment, how can I know what sort of ulimit is realistic? It's a long-running daemon which spawns worker threads on demand, and reaps them when the load decreases. I've had it spin the server to its death a few times. The most important limit is probably memory, which I have now limited to 200M per process, but I'd like to figure out how I can enforce a limit on the number of children (the program does allow me to configure a maximum, but how do I know there are no bugs in that part of the code?)

  I'm using an anonymizing VPN, but want SSH access to internal computer. How do I access my internal computer through SSH? When I do ssh 98.123.45.6, the connection times out.   We have 2 identical database tables on our dev server. In both is a table that holds an X509Certificate2 data in one of its fields. When I grab the cert along with the password that I've been using all along, it works over the first database just fine. I run the same code though over the 2nd database and get this error and I don't get why if the setup is exactly the same and the database is also on this server. So I'm not sure why when I switch my connection string to talk to Database2, even though it's setup the same and the code I'm running over it is the same, it complains.   Hi, I have the following error Exception in thread "main" javax.naming.NameNotFoundException: CounterBean not bound trying to access an EJB JAR CounterBean.jar deployed on JBoss5 from a client application outside the Application Server. From the Jboss log, it looks like it does not have a global JNDI name? Is this ok? What have I done wrong?   Some sites, like here at SO, allow 'bogus' slugs in the URL. Before implementing URL slugs on my site, I have a question of 'best practices'... Given a structure like example.com/123/article-slug-here/, if my site allows bogus slugs by querying on the ID - Should I ... just do a redirect to the appropriate/canonical URL (verifying the slug, and redirecting in case of a mismatch)? -or- return a 404, since technically example.com/123/this-article-s-u-x doesn't exist?

Any idea why and how can that be avoided?
