• How to filter a funnel by product?

  Let's say I'm tracking a conversion like the following: View product > Customize > Finish order When I push the the above events, I also push a product ID and name attached to it, hoping that I could segment by that, but I can't figure out how. I want to view the conversion per product, not generally. Does anyone know if this is possible with Google Analytics? If not, please suggest other solutions.

  It is one of the most talked about features planned for Java: Closures. Many of us have been longing for them. Some of us (including I) have grown a bit impatient and have turned to scripting languages to fill the void. But, once closures have finally arrived to Java: how will they effect the Java Community? Will the advancement of VM-targetted scripting languages slow to a crawl, stay the same, or acclerate? Will people flock to the new closure syntax, thus turning Java code-bases all-around into more functionally structured implementations? Will we only see closures sprinkled in Java throughout? What will be the effect on tool/IDE support? How about performance? And finally, what will it mean for Java's continued adoption, as a language, compared with other languages that are rising in popularity? • After 10.10 -> 11.04 upgrade, can only login via Classic (No Effects)

  Yesterday I upgraded from 10.10 to 11.04, everything seemed to go okay until immediately after login: the desktop goes into a "corrupted" looking state (similar to having too high resolution set). I can see some kind of movement by moving the mouse around/right clicking, and can enter text terminals via ctrl + alt + f1 It does this in both plain "Ubuntu" and "Ubuntu Classic", and only seems to login/startup properly with Ubuntu Classic (No Effects). I have checked my video card (Radeon X600) and run the unity support test which passes with all "yes" results (Unity supported: yes): /usr/lib/nux/unity_support_test -p I have tried re-installing my Ubuntu desktop: rm -rf .gnome .gnome2 .gconf .gconfd .metacity sudo apt-get remove ubuntu-desktop sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop With no success. I can workaround for now with Classic (No Effects), but I'd really like to find the root problem. Any suggestions on what else to try would be appreciated!

Information architecture, software architecture, specification writing, software planning, requirements analysis? What is the best, most recognizable term for this?

• Lost power during upgrade, how do I recover?

  I was attempting to update my 11.10 install to 12.04beta. During the install step, I accidentally lost power to my laptop (the power cable came unplugged) and it shut down. Whenever I go to boot now, I can select my install via Grub and it loads up to where the sign-in should happen, but I get a display that looks like what you see as soon as you shut down. It looks like it locks after checking for the battery. Is there anyway, with or without Live media, to restore my machine's install/update to 12.04 but still keep my settings/applications/files?

• How to convince a non-technical client that their application spec needs to be simplified?

  Often times I am faced with the situation where a new client comes to me with an application that has literally 100s of unnecessary features and it is quite clear that things need to be drastically simplified for the project to have any chance of succeeding. How do you convince the client to take a more MVP approach and simplify? edit: So the current top answer is to provide the client with a time/cost estimate for the huge application. I'm not too fond of this answer because it doesn't address the real problem with this situation. And that is - it's a bad practice to spec out a massive application and then try and build it from the get go. I feel much more comfortable initially building a small, simple MVP foundation. And then adding small features to that foundation one by one. So how do I convince the client to approach building software in this way?

• Does anyone know of a simple (free?) feature request tracking system we could use internally for sales people?

  I sometimes hear about pain points of customers using our app from sales people, but there really isn't a good way for us to currently keep track of these. I was going to write one myself but figured I would ask first. I was thinking something so simple it would literally just be a small form for adding a new feature, and then it would appear in the list, like stackexchange questions. Then users can upvote them, or even record each time a user complains about something related to the request so we can order them in priority based on real data. Then I can easily go look every few days and see what's going on. That's really it, nothing more complicated than that. Know of anything?

• Case studies for successful service (project) based software development businesses without constant overtime from its employees [closed]

  I work for an IT company that is primarily services (project) based rather than product based. All software engineers are salaried. The company has set new expectations that everyone should work 48 hours per week instead of 40. Note, this isn't occasional overtime due to crunches. This is the new 40. The reasoning is that this enables the company to provide benefits to its employees such as monetary incentives and training because the company is more profitable. more hours worked = more billable hours = larger profit I understand the need for profitability and the occasional crunch time and have put in the extra hours when it was needed and beneficial to the project. However, I am also very sensitive to work life balance and have raised my concerns about the the new expectation. My employer is open to other methods to increase profitability so I hold hope that we can turn things around before it becomes a horrible place to work. How does a services based company become more profitable without increasing the number of hours expected from it's salaried employees? Are there any case studies showing the pros and cons of consistent overtime? Are there any case studies for a successful service based business model (for software development companies) that does not require consistent overtime from its employees?

• Second Monitor Unable to Display at any Resolution

  After connecting the second monitor, the only way to get it to work is with 'mirror', which isn't what I want it for. If I select a display resolution for it, I get the following error: requested position/size for CRTC 148 is outside the allowed limit: position=(1908, 0), size=(1024, 768), maximum=(1920, 1920) I'm on 12.04, with AMD HD Radeon 6950, Post-update drivers. I appreciate anybodies help with this. Thanks.

• Multiple ToggleButton image with different highlight image in WPF

  I am very new to WPF and needed some pointers as to why this is not working correctly. I am trying to make a maximize button that will change to a restore button when clicked. I thought a toggle button with 2 different styles that would be changed in the code behind could work. I am first trying to get the maximize button working and have ran into a problem. I get the error 'System.Windows.Controls.Image' is not a valid value for the 'System.Windows.Controls.Image.Source' property on a Setter. in my xaml. I seem to be not understanding something completely. • Xen networking is inconsistent in multiple ways

  I've been running xen for a few weeks now on an Ubuntu 12.04 server. I've got 3 guests: a Windows Server 2003 guest, an Ubuntu guest, and a Windows 7 Guest. My Server 2003 guest seems to work fine; I can ping it from the network, the hostname resolves correctly, and it can see the internet. This guest is attached to xenbr0, and its IP is 10.100.1.21. My Win7 guest is what is driving me crazy. I use the same configuration script as a base, changing the important parts (hostname and boot disk, mainly). It installed correctly, and is currently running, but I am unable to ping this guest. It's hostname is "alexander", with an IP of 10.100.1.22. It is also using xenbr0. The guest can ping the firewall and various IP addressess, but seems unable to resolve hostnames. Now heres the weird part: when I use rdesktop (RDP client) from my laptop (not the xen host) to connect to alexander, it works just fine. It apparently resolves the hostname fine, and does the same with the IP address. So, can someone tell me why I can access this guest using RDP, but not using ping, nslookup, traceroute, etc? It's apparently invisible to all but RDP. Also, is it okay to use two guests on the same bridge, or do i need different ones for each guest? Thanks in advance for any help. Regards

In this blog I would like to briefly introduce you to these award winning projects. Raymond James is a diversified financial services company, which provides financial planning, wealth management, investment banking, and asset management. They are using Oracle GoldenGate and Oracle Data Integrator to feed their operational data store (ODS), which supports application services across the enterprise. A major requirement for their project was low data latency, as key decisions are made based on the data in the ODS. They were able to fulfill this requirement due to the Oracle Data Integrator’s integrated solution with Oracle GoldenGate. Oracle GoldenGate captures changed data from different systems including Oracle Database, HP NonStop and Microsoft SQL Server into a single data store on SQL Server 2008. Oracle Data Integrator provides data transformations for the ODS. Leveraging ODI’s integration with GoldenGate, Raymond James now sees a 9 second median latency (from source commit to ODS target commit). The ODS solution delivers high quality, accurate data for consuming applications such as Raymond James’ next generation client and portfolio management systems as well as real-time operational reporting. It enables timely information for making better decisions. There are more benefits Raymond James achieved with this implementation of Oracle’s data integration solution. The software developers and architects of this solution, Tim Garrod and Ryan Fonnett, have told us during their presentation at OpenWorld that they also reduced application complexity significantly while improving developer productivity through trusted operational services. They were able to utilize CDC to generate alerts for business users, and for applications (for example for cache hydration mechanisms). One cool innovation example among many in this project is that using ODI's flexible architecture, Tim and Ryan could build 24/7 self-healing processes. And these processes have hardly failed. The company has been migrating all their legacy applications on to a new-world application set based on Oracle and consolidating all BI on to a single Oracle platform. The company recently implemented Oracle Exadata as the data warehouse engine and uses Oracle Business Intelligence EE. Their goal with deploying GoldenGate and ODI was to provide BI data to the enterprise in a way that it also supports operational decision making requirements from a wide range of Oracle based ERP applications such as E-Business Suite, PeopleSoft, Oracle Retail Suite. They use GoldenGate’s log-based change data capture capabilities and Oracle Data Integrator to populate the Oracle Retail Data Model. The electronic point of sale (EPOS) integration solution they built processes over 80 million transactions/day at busy periods in near real time (15 mins). It provides valuable insight to Retail and Commercial teams for both intra-day and historical trend analysis. As I mentioned in yesterday’s blog, the right data integration platform can transform the business. Here is another example: The point-of-sale integration enabled the grocery chain to optimize its stock management, leading to another award: Morrisons won the Grocer 33 award in 2012 - beating all other major UK supermarkets in product availability.   So I am a small Mac-user cog in a larger Windows-based network machine. The network here works fine for most everyone else (on PCs), but I have random timeouts and issues with the Wi-Fi. Luckily, I have identified a few problem access points by MAC address (via their log messages in Console.app). Is it possible to tell my AirPort on my Macbook to avoid those access points, and only speak with the access points who are far less touchy about me drinking the Apple kool-aid? All of the points are on the same network SSID.

• 6-core Sandy Bridge-E vs. 4-core Ivy Bridge

  I am currently choosing between Intel Core i7-3770 (quad, Ivy) and Intel Core i7-3930K (6 cores, Sandy Bridge-E). This machine will be used for both work (Adobe, Autodesk software, graphic and coding-related) and gaming. Even if some applications I will use are capable to utilize all 6 cores at once, is it worth preferring Sandy Bridge-E to newer Ivy Bridge? Games aren't and probably will perform better on Ivy, won't they? 6-core is also twice as expensive as a quad Ivy.
