• Add a Search Box to the Drop-Down Tab List in Firefox

  Do you have a lot of tabs open no matter what time of day it is and find sorting through the tabs list frustrating? Then get control back with the List All Tabs Menu extension for Firefox. Before If you have a large number of tabs open using the “Tab List Menu” can start to become a little awkward. You can use your mouse’s middle button to scroll through the list or the tiny arrow button at the bottom but there needs to be a better way to deal with this. After Once you have installed the extension you will notice two differences in the “Tab List Menu”. There will be a search box available and a nice scrollbar for those really long lists. A closer look at the search box and scrollbar setup… Depending on your style you can use the scrollbar to look for a particular page or enter a search term and watch that list become extremely manageable.   So, I get a FedEx delivery the other day... "What cool device could be inside this FedEx Overnight Express Large Box?" I was wondering... Could it be a new Linux/ARM target device board, faster than a Raspberry Pi and better than a BeagleBone Black??? Why, yes! Yes, it was a Linux/ARM target device board, faster than anything around! It was a Freescale i.MX6 Sabre Smart Device Board (SDB)! Cool... Quad Core ARM Cortex A9 1GHz with 1GB of RAM. So, cool... I installed the Freescale One Box OpenWRT Linux image onto its SD card and booted it up into Linux. But, wait! One thing was missing... What was it? What could be missing? Why, it had no Java SE Embedded installed on it yet, of course! So, I went to the JDK 7u45 download link. Clicked on "Accept License Agreement", and clicked on "jdk-7u45-linux-arm-vfp-sflt.tar.gz", installed the bad boy, and all was good. Java SE Embedded 7u45 on a Freescale One Box. Nice... Hinkmond

• Blank screen after installing nvidia restricted driver

  I have a new machine with a MSI N560GTX Ti Twin Frozr II/OC graphic card and MSI PH67A-C43 (B3) main board. If i install the current nvidia restricted driver and reboot the machine on Natty (64-bit), then i only get a black screen after reboot and my system does not respond. I can´t see the login screen. On nvidia web page i saw that the current driver is 270.41.06. Is that driver used as current driver? Btw, i am an ubuntu/linux beginner and therefore not very familiar with ubuntu. What can i do to solve the black screen problem? EDIT: Setting the nomodeset parameter does not solve the problem. After ubuntu start, first i see the ubuntu logo, then strange pixels and at the end the black screen. HELP! EDIT2: Thank you, but setting the "video=vesa:off gfxpayload=text" parameters do no solve the problem too. Same result as in last edit. HELP. I would like to see Unity. • 12.10 Booting Into Variations Of Blank Screen

  I've been running the Ubuntu 12.10 beta since about a month before the final release with almost no problems. However since the day of release (I'm assuming an update has caused this) I have had problems booting into the actual GUI interface. Trying to get it to work is just a case of hard shutting down until it works, but for most of the time I need to battle with various different kinds of black screens. These include a plain black screen, a flashing line and a flashing line that doesn't fit the resolution. Nine times out of ten the cursor will be displayed over these. It also sometimes manages to boot into Ubuntu, albeit text mode or sometimes it loads GRUB which it isn't setup to do. If anyone could help out with this it'd be great. I really, really don't want to have to go through yet another clean installation. Cheers.

• How can I fix broken i915 drivers for Intel GPUs?

  I've got troubles getting the i915 drivers to work correctly on my laptop (HP Pavilion DM4 2101ea). Specifically, the laptop screen goes black and stays black after the splash graphic when booting both from USB key and from harddrive. To get anything on to the display after the splash screen I have to boot either with acpi=off nomodeset i915.modeset=0 I'd rather not turn ACPI off because I like my fans spinning and nomodeset is a bit overkill, so for now I'm booting with i915.modeset=0. Unfortunately, this turns off KMS and my current maximum resolution on the laptop screen is fixed to 1024x768 instead of its real capability. When not setting any of the above boot flags and I plug in an external monitor, the external monitor works fine. When booting with the flags, the external monitor works fine too, but can only do 1024x768 and can't do anything else than mirroring the laptop display. I did upgrade the i915 drivers from 2.17 that ship with Precise to 2.19 which are the most recent ones but without luck of getting anything to display. • Ubuntu Wubi Booting Problem

  i have a problem with my Ubuntu 12.04 Wubi installation, sometimes when booting, the computer will get to the purple screen without the Ubuntu logo, then will go to a black screen and then lots of white saccaged colors will appear and i will be taken to the login page. But sometimes, it just get stuck on the black screen and does nothing and i have to hard shutdown and retry it until it works. What may cause this problem and why? I can shutdown correctly. Thanks for helping. Edit: RADEON HD 7650M Graphic card with latest available Drivers on amd's driver download site (fglrx drivers caused shutdown problems so i removed them). Screen resolution is 1600x900.

• Dead (nearly blank) laptop screen, secondary screen works - how to fix?

  My laptop screen is black while my secondary screen is fine. What I tried: setting brightness (Fn keys) - no effect, no change seen, also on secondary screen removing static electricity like suggested here - no effect restarting / charging battery, running on battery / "wall" power - no effect as well wait to see if warming it up helps - it doesn't follow official Ubuntu diagnostics - checking now... What I will try next: check last updates I've made IIRC I am running on nomodeset already, but can't recall how to verify this Further symptoms: can't see BIOS screen system loads and works fine, just screen has problems screen works (occasionally I could glimpse very dimly what was going on, but it was like with minimum brightness set - nearly non-distinguishable from just a black screen) Any ideas how to proceed best? What is most probable cause?

• Using the JRockit Flight Recorder as an In-Flight Black Box

  The new JRockit Flight Recorder has some very interesting properties. It can be used like the black box of an airplane, allowing users to go back in time and check what was happening around the time when something went wrong. Here is how to enable the default continuous recording in JRockit to allow for that use case. The flight recorder is on by default in JRockit R28, the problem is that there is no recording running by default. To configure JRockit to start with the default recording running, add the parameter: -XX:FlightRecorderOptions=defaultrecording=true That will enable a recording with recording ID 0. You can see that it has been started properly by choosing Show Recordings from the context menu in JRockit Mission Control.   You should see something similar to the picture below. Simply right click on the recording and select dump to dump information available in the flight recorder. You can select to dump data for a specific period of time or all data. For more information about the command line parameters available to control the Flight Recorder, see the JRockit documentation.

• Antec Fusion Black LCD won't turn off on system shutdown

  Hi! I've been struggling a while with getting the iMON LCD/IR-receiver on my Antec Fusion Black case to shutdown together with the system (XBMC Live 10 - ubuntu based). But it won't. When it's turned off the LCD still lights up the whole room. Many have proposed the "solution" of setting the machine into hibernation instead but that however won't work for me, since I'm unable to suspend my system. It is the LCD/IR-module that prevents me from suspending and I haven't found a solution to properly unload it on suspending (it's way above my linux knowledge). I need help with getting the display to turn off the backlight when the system is turned off. Can anyone please help me? If anyone also has the knowledge on how to get the eject function to work on my Antec Veris rm200 remote I would be very grateful, I was told about that it could get fixed with irexec but I do not know how since I haven't been able to find a good tutorial on the subject. • Ubuntu 12.10 boots to purple or black screen but intermittently boots fine

  I have a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.10 64bit dual booting with Win7 64bit. Windows boots fine every time. When I choose Ubuntu from Grub2 menu it will sometimes boot just fine. Most of the times though it gets stuck at a purple screen with nothing happening and no keys or key combinations working. Other times instead of the purple screen I get a black screen with a flashing cursor at the top. Nothing happens. I need to hold down the power button to restart and after a couple times of trying it will eventually boot into Ubuntu. Once that happens everything runs without any problems. I have tried different approaches to fix the problem but to no avail. I tried removing "quiet splash", used no splash, and nomodeset What I got from this was seeing all the text of the boot process but more often than not the process gets stuck right after recognizing all the USB ports and devices. If it gets stuck nothing happens (except when i plug in a usb device: it still recognizes it with a new line of text) In the case when the boot process works, after it lists the usb devices it tells me something like: recovery of read-only filesystem necessary. (its the filesystem that ubuntu runs on) then it does the recovery and i get: recovery complete. after that Ubuntu will boot properly and I get to see the login screen. I have no idea what to do to fix that problem. I have to reboot 3 to 5 times everytime I want to get into Ubuntu and I feel like I'm breaking my new Laptop. (its a lenovo ideapad z580 btw. i5 processor and nvidia gtx640 graphics card) I hope someone can help me. Thanks. Edit: i just got a "failed to enable AA error" message when waking it up from suspend. I don't know if that helps or has anything to do with the boot probs.

• Vertex fog producing black artifacts

  I originally posted this question on the XNA forums but got no replies, so maybe someone here can help: I am rendering a textured model using the XNA BasicEffect. When I enable fog, the model outline is still visible as many small black dots when it should be "in the fog". Why is this happening? • Can't install Ubuntu, black screen after install

  I tried several times, but wasn't able to make it work. I tried all recent types of Ubuntu but it didn't work. Then I tried acpi=off at the beginning of the installation. In this way I could finish the installation. But after the restart Ubuntu didn't work. Only a black screen appeared. Before that I tried it on the VirtualBox and it work. • Ubuntu Server 11.10 boot, white terminal with garbled black text

  I just installed Ubuntu server 11.10 and the install went fine. This system is running on an Intel Pentium II board with onboard graphics. However when I try to boot into Ubuntu I get a white terminal with garbled black text. I have tried various grub 'fixes' as googling the issue seemed to suggest it was a res or grub related issue. I cannot ssh in so the issue does affect Linux as well. I have had no luck with anything thus far and am at my wits end. This was my first Ubuntu excursion as my friend told me it was better for servers than CentOS because it was easier... Not so much.... Does anyone have any ideas as to what the issue could be? When answering bear in mind I am an Ubuntu noob and Linux novice. As of 1/26/12 I have tried to add the console=ttyl line to the /etc/default/grub and run update-grub. This results in the line in the boot parameters that normally reads: linux /vmlunz-3.0.0-12-generic-pae root=/dev/mapper/dev-root rovt.handoff=7 now reads: linux /vmlunz-3.0.0-12-generic-pae root=/dev/mapper/dev-root ro console=ttyl vt.handoff=7 This does not work. • Black or White Border/Shadow around PNGs in SDL/OPENGL

• Screen going black, further investigation reveals healthy ram and hard disk, and several kernel oops logs

  Six days ago, I went to go take a shower, and I suspended Ubuntu as usual, to save battery life. I came back, and the screen was black. REISUB and general fiddling around did nothing. Restarted, and still had nothing on the screen. Since then, this has happened several times, and the only fix is to 1) force shut laptop, 2) take out battery, 3) hold power button, 4) put battery back in, 5) boot. I have investigated further into the matter, doing a ram test and a hard disk check. Both turned out fine, but then my attention turned towards the error messages I was receiving upon bootup, the whole "System program problem detected" dealio. I did some digging and found four kernel oops logs in my /var/crash. What I can understand of them points to two things, 1) they are connected to my suspending problems, since there are four them (I have had four suspending crashes), and they both confirm that there was a issue with waking up from suspend, and 2) the crashes might have to do with Python (possibly could be jumping to conclusions), since mentions of Python are peppered throughout the logs. At this point, I am unsure of how to continue, and I have come here for help. Is there any way I can fix this? Should I start by uploading the logs here?

• Black Screen on pressing back button in libgdx

  In my game when i touch on advertisements and press back button to return on game the i am getting a black screen. I referred this link. I tried to change IosGraphics.java but the change is not reflected in monotouch project. I did the following : Extracted nightly.zip and opened gdx-backend-iosmonotouch-sources From there I changed IosGraphicsjava. I then made a new jar file gdx-backend-iosmonotouch.jar and replaced it with original jar file in the nightly folder. Compressed all the files from nightly folder in .zip file. Used this .zip file to make a new project throuch gdx-setup-ui.jar. I tried to open my project in monotouch and from com-gdx-backendios.dll i found that the changes in IosGraphics are not being reflected. Am I missing something? How do I solve this? I even tried to open gdx-backend-iosmonotouch-sources.jar with winrar and edit IosGraphics.java and save it. Even this didn't work.

• Ubuntu live cd : black screen and blinking cursor

  I try to install ubuntu 12.04 on my computer. I can get to the purple screen on the live cd but then, if I choose "Installing Ubuntu", I have a black screen with a cursor blinking (and nothing else happens). My PC : acer aspire M3920, CPU i5-2300, 8 Gb RAM, NVIDIA gt 405. What I already tried : I tried with 12.04 and 13.04 daily build I tried with a live usb and with a live dvd I tried the following boot options : nomodset, acpi=off I googled a lot and it seems that it could be a graphic card problem. Do you know any other boot options that I could try ? UPDATE This is not a duplicate : I've tried all the common boot options (nomodeset, noacpi...) and it doesn't change anything. With the option "no splash" (instead of "quiet splash"), I can see what happens before the forever-blinking cursor : [sdg] no caching mode present [sdg] assuming drive cache : write trough ata8.00: excetion Emask 0x52 ... frozen ata8 : SError : { RecovData RecovComm UnrecovData...} ata8.00 : failed command : IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE ... ata8.00 : status : { DRDY } ata8 : hard resetting link Does somebody know what it means ? N.B. astonishingly, Puppy Linux boots fine (but Debian, Fedora and Ubuntu do not) Solution In fact, it was not a graphic card problem. I had to disconnect the dvd drive and connect it to another free sata connector (I don't really understand why Ubuntu had trouble with this connector and Windows 7 not). After that, everything worked fine.

• What is SharePoint Out of the Box?

  It’s always fun in the blog-o-sphere and SharePoint bloggers always keep the pot boiling. Bjorn Furuknap recently posted a blog entry titled Why Out-of-the-Box Makes No Sense in SharePoint, quickly followed up by a rebuttal by Marc Anderson on his blog. Okay, now that we have all the players and the stage what’s the big deal? Bjorn started his post saying that you don’t use “out-of-the-box” (OOTB) SharePoint because it makes no sense. I have to disagree with his premise because what he calls OOTB is basically installing SharePoint and admiring it, but not using it. In his post he lays claim that modifying say the OOTB contacts list by removing (or I suppose adding) a column, now puts you in a situation where you’re no longer using the OOTB functionality. Really? Side note. Dear Internet, please stop comparing building software to building houses. Or comparing software architecture to building architecture. Or comparing web sites to making dinner. Are you trying to dumb down something so the general masses understand it? Comparing a technical skill to a construction operation isn’t the way to do this. Last time I checked, most people don’t know how to build houses and last time I checked people reading technical SharePoint blogs are generally technical people that understand the terms you use. Putting metaphors around software development to make it easy to understand is detrimental to the goal. </rant> Okay, where were we? Right, adding columns to lists means you are no longer using the OOTB functionality. Yeah, I still don’t get it. Another statement Bjorn makes is that using the OOTB functionality kills the flexibility SharePoint has in creating exactly what you want. IMHO this really flies in the absolute face of *where* SharePoint *really* shines. For the past year or so I’ve been leaning more and more towards OOTB solutions over custom development for the simple reason that its expensive to maintain systems and code and assets. SharePoint has enabled me to do this simply by providing the tools where I can give users what they need without cracking open up Visual Studio. This might be the fact that my day job is with a regulated company and there’s more scrutiny with spending money on anything new, but frankly that should be the position of any responsible developer, architect, manager, or PM. Do you really want to throw money away because some developer tells you that you need a custom web part when perhaps with some creative thinking or expectation setting with customers you can meet the need with what you already have. The way I read Bjorn’s terminology of “out-of-the-box” is install the software and tell people to go to a website and admire the OOTB system, but don’t change it! For those that know things like WordPress, DotNetNuke, SubText, Drupal or any of those content management/blogging systems, its akin to installing the software and setting up the “Hello World” blog post or page, then staring at it like it’s useful. “Yes, we are using WordPress!”. Then not adding a new post, creating a new category, or adding an About page. Perhaps I’m wrong in my interpretation. This leads us to what is OOTB SharePoint? To many people I’ve talked to the last few hours on twitter, email, etc. it is *not* just installing software but actually using it as it was fit for purpose. What’s the purpose of SharePoint then? It has many purposes, but using the OOTB templates Microsoft has given you the ability to collaborate on projects, author/share/publish documents, create pages, track items/contacts/tasks/etc. in a multi-user web based interface, and so on. Microsoft has pretty clear definitions of these different levels of SharePoint we’re talking about and I think it’s important for everyone to know what they are and what they mean. Personalization and Administration To me, this is the OOTB experience. You install the product and then are able to do things like create new lists, sites, edit and personalize pages, create new views, etc. Basically use the platform services available to you with Windows SharePoint Services (or SharePoint Foundation in 2010) to your full advantage. No code, no special tools needed, and very little user training required. Could you take someone who has never done anything in a website or piece of software and unleash them onto a site? Probably not. However I would argue that anyone who’s configured the Outlook reading layout or applied styles to a Word document probably won’t have too much difficulty in using SharePoint OUT OF THE BOX. Customization Here’s where things might get a bit murky but to me this is where you start looking at HTML/ASPX page code through SharePoint Designer, using jQuery scripts and plugging them into Web Part Pages via a Content Editor Web Part, and generally enhancing the site. The JavaScript debate might kick in here claiming it’s no different than C#, and frankly you can totally screw a site up with jQuery on a CEWP just as easily as you can with a C# delegate control deployed to the server file system. However (again, my blog, my opinion) the customization label comes in when I need to access the server (for example creating a custom theme) or have some kind of net-new element I add to the system that wasn’t there OOTB. It’s not content (like a new list or site), it’s code and does something functional. Development Here’s were the propeller hats come on and we’re talking algorithms and unit tests and compilers oh my. Software is deployed to the server, people are writing solutions after some kind of training (perhaps), there might be some specialized tools they use to craft and deploy the solutions, there’s the possibility of exceptions being thrown, etc. There are a lot of definitions here and just like customization it might get murky (do you let non-developers build solutions using development, i.e. jQuery/C#?). In my experience, it’s much more cost effective keeping solutions under the first two umbrellas than leaping into the third one. Arguably you could say that you can’t build useful solutions without *some* kind of code (even just some simple jQuery). I think you can get a *lot* of value just from using the OOTB experience and I don’t think you’re constraining your users that much. I’m not saying Marc or Bjorn are wrong. Like Obi-Wan stated, they’re both correct “from a certain point of view”. To me, SharePoint Out of the Box makes total sense and should not be dismissed. I just don’t agree with the premise that Bjorn is basing his statements on but that’s just my opinion and his is different and never the twain shall meet.

• How to only round selected corners in a fancytitle box with Tikz

  If you take a look at http://www.texample.net/tikz/examples/boxes-with-text-and-math/ the boxes there are with rounded corners. In the examples, both the box itself and the title is a box. I want the title box to not have the bottom corners rounded. On page 120 in the manual, there is a description of how to draw with and without rounded corners. However, I want to use this in a fancytitle.
