    Let's come to the point directly. Open Finder. Go to view menu - Show toolbar ( if it is hidden in your finder ) on the left top side you can see List of devices I have three disks over there.     I want to perform a surface scan on my harddisks (S-ATA, P-ATA, USB and E-SATA) in windows VISTA. Is it possible to do this without scheduling the scan on next reboot? It takes a lot of time and I would like to be able to use the computer during the scan. I can accept that this might not be possible on the window partition disk, but I cannot see why it shouldn't be possible on other disks.

    Ubuntu Server 9.10 So there is the time command which will show you the time it took for a specific process/command to run after the command has completed. For example: :~$ time ls real 0m0.020s user 0m0.000s sys 0m0.000s I'd like to also collect the average CPU usage, Memory, and Disk (i/o) utilization after the process has completed using time (or another command if necessary). How can I accomplish this? Mainly I am using this to benchmark MySQL import performance using different innodb_buffer_pool_size settings.

Whenever I start my computer Ubuntu pops up the following error: A hard disk may be failing one or more hard disk report health problems A friend of mine ran some test and it was found that my hard disk has 74 bad sectors.   • Problem with File IO and splitting strings with Environment.NewLine in VB.Net

    Hi, I was experimenting with basic VB.Net file read/write and encountered this problem. I don't know whether it has something to do with the File IO or the String splitting. I am writing text to a file like so Dim sWriter As New StreamWriter("Data.txt") sWriter.WriteLine("FirstItem") sWriter.WriteLine("SecondItem") sWriter.WriteLine("ThirdItem") sWriter.Close() Then, I am reading the text from the file Dim sReader As New StreamReader("Data.txt") Dim fileContents As String = sReader.ReadToEnd() sReader.Close() Now, I am splitting the fileContents variable using Environment.NewLine and saving the returned String array. Dim tempStr() As String = fileContents.Split(Environment.NewLine) When I print the array, I get some weird results For Each str As String In tempStr Console.WriteLine("*" + str + "*") Next I added the *'s to the beginning and end to find out what is going on. Since NewLine is used as the delimiter, I expect the strings in the array to NOT have any NewLine's. But the output was this - *FirstItem* * SecondItem* * ThirdItem* * * Shouldn't it be this - *FirstItem* *SecondItem* *ThirdItem* ?? Since I am using WriteLine, my guess is a new line is added after the last string and hence the last empty item in the array after splitting. But why is there a new line in the beginning of the second and third strings?

  • Mixing NIO with IO

    Hi Usually you have a single bound tcp port and several connections on these. At least there are usually more connections as bound ports. My case is different: I want to bind a lot of ports and usually have no (or at least very few) connections. So I want to use NIO to accept the incoming connections. However, I need to pass the accepted connections to the existing jsch ssh library. That requires IO sockets instead of NIO sockets, it spawns one (or two) thread(s) per connection. But that's fine for me. Now, I thought that the following lines would deliver the very same result: Socket a = serverSocketChannel.accept().socket(); Socket b = serverSocketChannel.socket().accep(); SocketChannel channel = serverSocketChannel.accpet(); channel.configureBlocking( true ); Socket c = channel.socket(); Socket d = serverSocket.accept(); However the getInputStream() and getOutputStream() functions of the returned sockets seem to work different. Only if the socket was accepted using the last call, jsch can work with it. In the first three cases, it fails (and I am sorry: I don't know why). So is there a way to convert such a socket?   • Why do [flush-8:16] and [jbd2/sdb2-8] occasionally use 99.99% disk IO?

    Approximately twice a week, the entire graphical interface will lock up for about 10-20 seconds without warning while I am doing simple tasks such as browsing the web or writing a paper. When this happens, GUI elements do not respond to mouse or keyboard input, and the System Monitor applet displays 100% IOWait processor usage. Today, I finally happened to have GNOME Terminal already open when the problem started. Despite other applications such as Google Chrome, Firefox, GNOME Do, and GNOME Panel being unresponsive, the terminal was usable. I ran iotop and observed that commands named [flush-8:16] and [jbd2/sdb2-8] were alternately using 99.99% IO. What are these, and how can I prevent them from causing GUI unresponsiveness? Here is dumpe2fs /dev/sdb2, if it's relevant.

  • Macbook Pro Hard Drive won't shop up on disk startup

    I have a macbook pro from 2007. It came with an installation CD for 10.4.8. The first problem is that it won't even recognize the installation CD even though the CD seems perfectly fine. So I used another installation CD just to get me to the Disc Utility dialogue box. I went through the steps to erase the hard drive. However when I attempted to reboot the machine using Disc Startup there was no option for me to select the hard drive. Of course, since I don't have the appropriate installation disk in it won't let me install anything. What are my options? Do I need to ask Apple to send me a new installation CD for this computer? And why wouldn't the hard drive show up in the Startup options?

    I am currently running on Windows 7 x64, and have observe that my hard disk space is acting a little weird. Currently, my harddisk has 3 partitions, C:, D:, E:. Previously, before I delete a huge folder (30gb of data) from my D: drive, my C: drive has about 1gb left, while my E: drive has about 5 gb left. After deleting the 30gb of data (from D: drive), my space in D: drive has been recovered (but not sure if it's fully recovered), my C: drive which only had about 1gb left increased to 3. While my E: drive which had 5gb left dropped to 1. I was wondering if it has something to do with the fragmentations and whatsoever I always hear about in harddisk. Has anyone encountered similar issues or have an explanation to why it could be happening?

There are lots of problem due to inexperienced "network admin", and I am trying to fix them one by one. There exist one issue which I found quite weird, that the "Quota" tab exists in the C:(NTFS) drive but not the D:(NTFS) drive. I played around with gpedit to enable disk quota (it was "not configured" before), but still I can't see that tab. Have you seen this problem before? How did you solve it?

    I'm looking for a tool to summarize how disk space is being used on very large partitions. Our file system is around 950TB, mostly broken up into 20TB partitions. Does anybody have any experience of these tools and can make any recommendations? Even something that parses and summarises a really big du output would be a good start.

    I have a problem with Disk Utility on Mac OS X 10.6. I have an image of Windows that I would like to use as a bootable volume on a pen drive or external hard drive. The thing is: When I try to restore the volume from the image I get an error: "Restore Failure: Could not validate resource - Invalid Argument" I read some information about that error on the Internet. I converted the image into .iso (Mac OS Extended/ISO (Joliet) Hybrid Image) format and then got this error: "Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned before it can be restored." When I try to scan the image for Restore, I get the first message. I really read a lot of information about this topic on the Internet, but I haven't found the solution. I tried both ISO and DMG formats; I don't know which is best.

The problem is, whenever I use the VM, CrashPlan detects all parth of VHD as altered and backs up the 17 GB VHD. WHat I want is a software that can run on host OS (Windows 8), treat the VHD as a physical hard disk and create incremental backups of the VHD, includeing all files, programs and the OS

  • Xen Disk Performence Issues

    I'm currently using Xen PV on CentOS 5 with my domU's as flat files running on a hardware RAID controlled (write cache enabled) formatted with XFS. On the dom0 I can get about 500MB/s in a 2GB dd write from /dev/zero however on the domU's I'm lucky if I get 10MB/s (it is usually around half that). I've tried changing the disk scheduling to NOOP on the domU's, changed some mount parameters and tweaked the performance allocations of both the dom0 (prioritize CPU) and domU's (increase RAM and VCPU allocations). None of these steps have produced any noticeable change in performance. My instinct here is that it is not a hardware problem, due to the solid performance of the dom0. Any ideas on what might be causing this problem? I'm considering moving to LVM based domU's.
