  • R Install/Update on Mac OS X (Snow Leopard): where does R put files during install/config?

    In sum, there's a stray preference-like file or two (probably just one) that i can't find. Here's the whole story: I recently attempted to update my R install from 2.10 to 2.11. As i have done before, i installed from source. I know that all of the dependencies are correctly installed and made available to R, because my prior install worked fine. When i upgraded to 2.11, i am unable to install packages (no exception thrown, it just doesn't appear to complete the install and is unresponsive so i have to quit + restart R. Given i install from source, there are any number of points in the process that i could have messed up. What i need to do now is "start over" which requires that i clear out my my prior install. I am having trouble doing that. There is still at least one preference file or something like that i can't find and one of these is causing the problem, so i need to find it and terminate it with extreme prejudice before i do a fresh install. Although i set a number of flags during the install, i have never opted out of the default install locations during the config step. There has to be one or more preference files still in my file structure (and that's also accessible to the new install of R) because after i follow all of the steps below, then do a fresh install, when i start R for the first time, some of my preferences have persisted (e.g., quartz settings, GUI background color, editor selection, etc.). Again, the problem is that i just cannot locate those files. Finally, the problem can't be that during my last install from source, i inadvertently caused a preference file to be sent to an off-spec location--because again, a fresh R install (whether from source or from the OS X binaries) is finding those files Here's what i've done prior to attempting a clean install of R: Removed files from these locations: ~/.RData ~/.RHistory /Applications/R64.app /Applications/R.app /Library/Frameworks/R.framework (i also removed all symlinks from these) Cleared all RAM and disk caches, in particular the directory where i know R caches: ~/Library/Caches/R* (in fact i've cleared this entire directory) Checked for all 'hidden' files in the OS X directories where login/startup files are often placed: /etc/ ~/ In addition, i've checked R-help, and i've also read through the relevant portions of 'R Installation and Administration'--no luck. I've also searched searched my file structure using the various bash utilities, which nearly always solves problems of this sort quite easily, but in this case obviously searching by name or even pattern is more problematic.

  • How do I pipe in FileMerge as a diff tool with git on OSX?

    I'm new to git, on OSX, using it via command line. I come from the world of Tortoise SVN and Beyond Compare on Windows. I want to be able to pipe in diffs to happen via FileMerge which I have installed already. I was able to do this with TextMate simply by using: git diff | mate But I'm not sure how to get that set up so I can use FileMerge instead?

  • WPF 4 Datagrid with ComboBox

    I have a WPF 4 app with a ComboBox embedded in a DataGrid. The ComboBox is in a template column that displays the combobox when in edit mode but just a TextBlock otherwise. If I edit the cell and pick a new value from the combobox, when leaving the cell, the TextBlock in view mode does not reflect the new value. Ultimately, the new value gets saved and is displayed when the window is refreshed but it does not happen while still editing in the grid. Here are the parts that are making this more complicated. The grid and the combobox are bound to different ItemsSource from the EnityFramework which is tied to my database. For this problem, the grid is displaying project members. The project member name can be picked from the combobox which gives a list of all company employees. Any ideas on how to tie the view mode of the DataGridColumnTemplate to the edit value when they are pointing to different DataSources?     I guess this should be CW but I don't know how to post a question as such, so if anyone can help out... What I would like to know is the following: I have taken exam 70-526 a couple of years ago and I still have the training kit laying around. Now my boss wants me to prepare for the upgrade exam 70-505. Do you know if both exams are similar or otherwise put: do you think I have to get the new training kit to prepare for this exam or will the old one do? I haven't done a whole lot of Windows Forms programming these past few years so I'll have to re-learn much of what's in the book.

    I am testing Java classes with RSpec and JRuby. How can I stub out a call to super in an imported Java class in my RSpec test? For example: I have 2 Java classes: public class A{ public String foo() { return "bar"; } } public class B extends A public String foo() { // B code return super.foo(); } } I am just trying to test the code in B.foo and not the code in A.foo with JRuby. How can I stub out the call to the super class method in my RSpec test? rspec test: java_import Java::B describe B do it "should not call A.foo" do # some code to stub out A.foo b = B.new b.foo.should_not == "bar" end end I have tried including a module with a new foo method in B's class hoping that it would hit the module method first but B still makes a call to A. The inserting module technique works in Ruby but not with JRuby and imported Java classes. Any other ideas to stub out the superclass method to get my RSpec test to pass?

  • What's the best way to do cross browser testing?

    What's the best way for me to check if my website is compatible in IE7,8, Safari, FF, and Chrome without having to install each and everyone? I mainly want to check the CSS, HTML, and JavaScript. Update I put a bounty in hopes there is a more practical solution for someone like myself. I am using Windows 7 Home Premium x64. Update2 I don't mind installing these browsers now, but I can't even if I wanted to. Windows 7 doesn't allow me to install IE7.

  • ASP.NET application using old connection string.

    I am trying to publish a website using ASP.NET MVC3 EF and CODEFIRST with a SQL Server 2008 backend. On my local machine I was using a sql express db for development, but now that I am pushing live, I want to use my hosted production database. The problem is that when I try to run the application, it is still using my local db connection string. I have completely removed the old connection string from my web.config file and am using the <clear /> tag before creating the new connection string. I have also cleaned the solution and rebuilt, but somehow it is still connecting to the old db. What am I missing?   • HttpSendRequest not getting latest file from server

    I am having an issue with my HTTP requests in my app, such that if the remote file is the same size as the local file (even though its modified time is different, as its contents have been changed), attempts to download it return quickly and the newer file is not downloaded. In short, the process I am following is: Setting up an HTTP connection with the INTERNET_FLAG_RESYNCHRONIZE flag and calling HttpSendRequest(); then checking the HTTP status code and finding it to be "200". If the remote file is updated, but remains the same size as the local copy: The local file is unchanged after running the app. If I call HttpQueryInfo() with HTTP_QUERY_LAST_MODIFIED after sending the request, it gives me the actual last modified time of the server's file, which I can see is different from the local file I am trying to have it overwrite. If the remote file is updated, and the file size becomes different from the local copy: It is downloaded and overwrites the local copy as expected. Solution must work with Rails 3.0. Questions: Should I store the field as an integer (see above)? If so, how do I display the correct human readable status in an HTML table in my Rails view, e.g. show "Active" instead of "1" in the HTML table. Should I use an enum? If so, is this easy to localize later? Should I use straight strings, e.g. "Normal", "Active", "Completed" Can you provide a quick code sample of the view helper, controller or view code to make this work?

  • Calling PHP functions within HEREDOC strings

    In PHP, the HEREDOC string declarations are really useful for outputting a block of html. You can have it parse in variables just by prefixing them with $, but for more complicated syntax (like $var[2][3]), you have to put your expression inside {} braces. In PHP 5, it is possible to actually make function calls within {} braces inside a HEREDOC string, but you have to go through a bit of work. The function name itself has to be stored in a variable, and you have to call it like it is a dynamically-named function. For example: $fn = 'testfunction'; function testfunction() { return 'ok'; } $string = <<< heredoc plain text and now a function: {$fn()} heredoc; As you can see, this is a bit more messy than just: $string = <<< heredoc plain text and now a function: {testfunction()} heredoc; There are other ways besides the first code example, such as breaking out of the HEREDOC to call the function, or reversing the issue and doing something like: ?> <!-- directly outputting html and only breaking into php for the function --> plain text and now a function: <?PHP print testfunction(); ?> The latter has the disadvantage that the output is directly put into the output stream (unless I'm using output buffering), which might not be what I want. So, the essence of my question is: is there a more elegant way to approach this? Edit based on responses: It certainly does seem like some kind of template engine would make my life much easier, but it would require me basically invert my usual PHP style. Not that that's a bad thing, but it explains my inertia.. I'm up for figuring out ways to make life easier though, so I'm looking into templates now.

However, I wonder, what are the most significant CS advances of -say- the last five years. To give you an idea of how clueless I am, I couldn't name one of these advances. But, please don't spare me all the gory details. I'm not looking for an education in CS or a story about the history of CS. As far as this question is concerned: only the past five years matter! :-)
