  • APC switched rack PDU: Startup outlet state

    - by Ian Gregory
I have an APC Switched Rack PDU powering a number of servers in a remote datacentre. After a recent power outage, I noticed that the outlets did not automatically default to the On status once power was restored. Having reviewed the Web UI, I cannot find this option. I'm not certain of the model number (it doesn't appear to be visible in the Web UI), but I think it's this one. Is it possible to configure these PDU units to automatically power outlets after a cold start?

  • Colorize Monitoring of Logs

    - by Ian
I sometimes monitor apache and php error logs using tail under FreeBSD. Is there any way to get colorized output, either using tail or some other command line app? Alternatively, what is your favorite way to monitor the various web-related logs in realtime?

  • /etc/crontab or any user crontab is not being executed

    - by ian
My server is CentOS 5. When I edit /etc/crontab or edit any user(including root) crontab via "crontab -e" command, it just adds "(system) RELOAD (/etc/crontab)" or "(admin) RELOAD (cron/admin)" in the log. No CMD in the /var/log/cron. • Is the Realtek network driver on Windows Update fixed yet?

    - by Ian Boyd
Months ago i was experiencing problems with my networking, and was hoping the updated Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20) driver available from Microsoft on Windows Update would fix the problems. Instead, after the reboot, the network device failed to start, and the driver had to be rolled back. I'm not the only person to get this problem, it even was dealt with by a superuser. A co-worker experienced the exact same problem, and we independently came up with the same solution: hide the updated driver in Windows Update. So I've continued to have my network troubles, and i still need an updated driver. Is the version of the Realtek driver on Windows Update fixed yet? i know Microsoft never pulled it down, but maybe it's been up-updated. i really don't want to find out by downloading it. Can someone else confirm that it's no longer broken - or can someone else be my guinea pig?

  • How to resize Yahoo Messenger window?

    - by Ian Boyd
Yahoo messenger is huge: And that's as short as you can make it, it won't shrink vertically anymore. How can i make it a more reasonable size, e.g.: In fact, if we're making it look better, how about Yahoo stops pissing on their users and makes it: Okay, yes, the last one was me complaining. But the first two are a valid question! Note: The cut-off title bar is because Yahoo! developers don't pay their taxes, and assume that everyone runs at 96dpi.

  • Windows 7 explorer always crashes, opens small "Personalized Settings" window

    - by Ian Sellar
My Windows 7 desktop PC, built by me, started acting very weird in the last couple of days. I use it quite often, about half of the time through TeamViewer. Explorer would crash and restart randomly, almost always through TeamViewer. This made me suspect that TeamViewer was the problem but I have reproduced it with and without TeamViewer several times. The only way I can seem to get the problem not to occur is by booting into Safe Mode. I have used CCleaner and Malwarebytes to make sure it wasn't a registry error or malware causing the problem, and I have tried the fix in the seemly related issue here as well every other fix I have found online including removing security updates KB980408 and KB2926765 as well as using "sfc /scannow" and a bunch of other things I can't remember. More recently when I try to start explorer it is popping up a small window that says "Personalized Settings" on the top, but is completely empty and crashes instantly. The only way I can get it to disappear is to kill the explorer.exe process. I wish I could take a screenshot but I can't seem to open paint or even find the exe. I have tried restarting it, I have tried starting it while the personalized settings window was open. I have come up with two lists of processes the first is the list of active processes when I boot into safe mode and explorer seems to work fine. The second is the list of processes that I can narrow it down to in normal boot and still replicate the problem. There is one process that I can't seem to close. NisSrv.exe which is describes as "Microsoft Network Realtime Inspection Service". When I try to close the process NisSrv.exe it says "The operation could not be completed. Access is denied." When I try to close the related service it gives the same message. • Howt to grant network access to LocalSystem account?

    - by Ian Boyd
How do you grant access to network resources of the LocalSystem (NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM) account? When accessing the network, the LocalSystem account acts as the computer on the network: ...and acts as the computer on the network. Or to say the same thing again: The LocalSystem account acts as the computer on the network: When a service runs under the LocalSystem account on a computer that is a domain member, the service has whatever network access is granted to the computer account, or to any groups of which the computer account is a member. How does one grant a "computer" access to a shared folder and files? Note: Computer accounts typically have few privileges and do not belong to groups. So how would i grant a computer access to one of my shares; considering that "Everyone" already has access? Note: workgroup

  • Windows: File copy/move with filename regular expressions?

    - by Ian Boyd
i basically want to run: C:\>xcopy [0-9]{13}\.(gif|jpg|png) s:\TargetFolder /s i know xcopy doesn't support regular-express filename searches. i can't find out how to find out if PowerShell has a Cmdlet to copy files; and if it does, how to find out if it supports regular expression filename matching. Can anyone think of a way to perform a recursive file copy/move with regex filename matching?

  • Windows 7: How to place SuperFetch cache on an SSD?

    - by Ian Boyd
I'm thinking of adding a solid state drive (SSD) to my existing Windows 7 installation. I know I can (and should) move my paging file to the SSD: Should the pagefile be placed on SSDs? Yes. Most pagefile operations are small random reads or larger sequential writes, both of which are types of operations that SSDs handle well. In looking at telemetry data from thousands of traces and focusing on pagefile reads and writes, we find that Pagefile.sys reads outnumber pagefile.sys writes by about 40 to 1, Pagefile.sys read sizes are typically quite small, with 67% less than or equal to 4 KB, and 88% less than 16 KB. Pagefile.sys writes are relatively large, with 62% greater than or equal to 128 KB and 45% being exactly 1 MB in size. In fact, given typical pagefile reference patterns and the favorable performance characteristics SSDs have on those patterns, there are few files better than the pagefile to place on an SSD. What I don't know is if I even can put a SuperFetch cache (i.e. ReadyBoost cache) on the solid state drive. I want to get the benefit of Windows being able to cache gigabytes of frequently accessed data on a relativly small (e.g. 30GB) solid state drive. This is exactly what SuperFetch+ReadyBoost (or SuperFetch+ReadyDrive) was designed for. Will Windows offer (or let) me place a ReadyBoost cache on a solid state flash drive connected via SATA? A problem with the ReadyBoost cache over the ReadyDrive cache is that the ReadyBoost cache does not survive between reboots. The cache is encrypted with a per-session key, making its existing contents unusable during boot and SuperFetch pre-fetching during login. Update One I know that Windows Vista limited you to only one ReadyBoost.sfcache file (I do not know if Windows 7 removed that limitation): Q: Can use use multiple devices for EMDs? A: Nope. We've limited Vista to one ReadyBoost per machine Q: Why just one device? A: Time and quality. Since this is the first revision of the feature, we decided to focus on making the single device exceptional, without the difficulties of managing multiple caches. We like the idea, though, and it's under consideration for future versions. I also know that the 4GB limit on the cache file was a limitation of the FAT filesystem used on most USB sticks - an SSD drive would be formatted with NTFS: Q: What's the largest amount of flash that I can use for ReadyBoost? A: You can use up to 4GB of flash for ReadyBoost (which turns out to be 8GB of cache w/ the compression) Q: Why can't I use more than 4GB of flash? A: The FAT32 filesystem limits our ReadyBoost.sfcache file to 4GB Can a ReadyBoost cache on an NTFS volume be larger than 4GB? Update Two The ReadyBoost cache is encrypted with a per-boot session key. This means that the cache has to be re-built after each boot, and cannot be used to help speed boot times, or latency from login to usable. Windows ReadyDrive technology takes advantage of non-volatile (NV) memory (i.e. flash) that is incorporated with some hybrid hard drives. This flash cache can be used to help Windows boot, or resume from hibernate faster. Will Windows 7 use an internal SSD drive as a ReadyBoost/*ReadyDrive*/SuperFetch cache? Is it possible to make Windows store a SuperFetch cache (i.e. ReadyBoost) on a non-removable SSD? Is it possible to not encrypt the ReadyBoost cache, and if so will Windows 7 use the cache at boot time? See also SuperUser.com: ReadyBoost + SSD = ? Windows 7 - ReadyBoost & SSD drives? • Which browsers support Window's Low Integrity level?

    - by Ian Boyd
Normally i like running ie, but it's rendering speed at high-dpi is poor. More recently i've switched to Chrome, but it does not support high-dpi displays. i'm interested in trying other browsers, but they must support protected mode. Are there any other browsers, besides IE and Chrome, that support Mandatory Integrity Levels (i.e. protected mode)? Browsers that i do know about: Browser Protected Mode High-dpi Aware ============== =============== ============== Internet Explorer Yes Yes Chrome Yes No Firefox No No Opera No No Are there any other? And just as an fyi, the clear, unambiguous, non-argumentative, non-subjective, question is: Are there any browsers, aside from Internet Explorer, available for Windows, that run at the Windows Low Mandatory integrity level, and support high-dpi (i.e. non-96 dpi) displays?

  • How to configure Apache on Amazon Elastic Beanstalk

    - by Ian
My PHP5.3 application is currently running on a Windows 2003 server running XAMPP 1.7.7 I've decided it will be better if I can get it moved onto the cloud, and Amazon Elastic Beanstalk looks like the easiest way to go. I'm starting with a 64bit Amazon Linux running PHP 5.3 container. My next step is to limit access to the website with an htpasswd file. I'd rather not use .htaccess files. How do I configure Beanstalk Apache conf file settings (on Windows the settings are stored in httpd.conf)?

  • Performance required to improve Windows Experience Index?

    - by Ian Boyd
Is there a guide on the metrics required to obtain a certain Windows Experience Index? A Microsoft guy said in January 2009: On the matter of transparency, it is indeed our plan to disclose in great detail how the scores are calculated, what the tests attempt to measure, why, and how they map to realistic scenarios and usage patterns. Has that amount of transparency happened? Is there a technet article somewhere? If my score was limited by my Memory subscore of 5.9. A nieve person would suggest: Buy a faster RAM Which is wrong of course. From the Windows help: If your computer has a 64-bit central processing unit (CPU) and 4 gigabytes (GB) or less random access memory (RAM), then the Memory (RAM) subscore for your computer will have a maximum of 5.9. You can buy the fastest, overclocked, liquid-cooled, DDR5 RAM on the planet; you'll still have a maximum Memory subscore of 5.9. So in general the knee-jerk advice "buy better stuff" is not helpful. What i am looking for is attributes required to achieve a certain score, or move beyond a current limitation. • Secret, unlogged, transparent, case-sensitive proxy in IIS6?

    - by Ian Boyd
Does IIS have a secret, unlogged, transparent, case-sensitive proxy built into it? A file exists on the web-server: GET http://www.stackoverflow.com/javascript/ModifyQuoteArea.js HTTP/1.1 Accept: text/html, application/xhtml+xml, */* Accept-Language: en-US User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/5.0) Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Connection: Keep-Alive Host: www.stackoverflow.com HTTP/1.1 200 OK Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Length: 29246 Date: Mon, 07 Mar 2011 14:20:07 GMT Content-Type: application/x-javascript ETag: "5a0a6178edacb1:1c51" Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 Last-Modified: Fri, 02 Tue 2010 17:03:32 GMT Accept-Ranges: bytes X-Powered-By: ASP.NET ... Problem is that a changes made to the file will not get served, the old (i.e. February of last year) version keeps getting served: HTTP/1.1 200 OK Connection: Keep-Alive Content-Length: 29246 Date: Mon, 07 Mar 2011 14:23:07 GMT Content-Type: application/x-javascript ETag: "5a0a6178edacb1:1c51" Server: Microsoft-IIS/6.0 Last-Modified: Fri, 02 Tue 2010 17:03:32 GMT Accept-Ranges: bytes X-Powered-By: ASP.NET ... The same old file gets served, even though we've: renamed the file deleted the file restarted IIS The request for this file does not appear in the IIS logs (e.g. C:\WINNT\System32\LogFiles\W3SVC7\) And this only happens from the outside (i.e. the internet). If you issue the request locally on the server, then you will: - get the current file (file there) - 404 (file renamed) - 404 (file deleted) But if i change the case of the requested resource, i.e.: GET http://www.stackoverflow.com/javascript/MoDiFyQuOtEArEa.js HTTP/1.1 Accept: text/html, application/xhtml+xml, */* Accept-Language: en-US User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; MSIE 9.0; Windows NT 6.1; WOW64; Trident/5.0) Accept-Encoding: gzip, deflate Connection: Keep-Alive Host: www.stackoverflow.com Note: MoDiFyQuOtEArEa.js verses ModifyQuoteArea.js Then i do get the proper file (or get the 404 as i expect if the file is renamed or deleted). But any subsequent changes to the file will not show up until i change the case of the file i'm asking for. Checking the IIS logs all indicate that the (internet) requests are all coming the correct client on the internet (i.e. not from some intermediate proxy). Since the file doesn't exist on the hard drive anymore, i conclude that there is a proxy. The requests serviced from this proxy are not logged in the IIS logs. The requests for new files are logged, and from the client IP, not a proxy IP. The proxy is case sensitivie. This does not sound like something Microsoft, or IIS, would do: - a transparent proxy - case-sensitivie - unlogged - surviving restarts of IIS - surviving in a cache for hours i can't believe that our customer's IIS is doing these things. i'm assuming there is some other transparent proxy in front of IIS. Or, does IIS have a transparent, unlogged, case-sensitive, memory based, proxy, that caches content for at least 7 hours? (Come Monday morning, IIS is serving the correct file, unlogged).

i need to be able to access a customer's SQL Server, and ideally their entire LAN, remotely. They have a firewall/router, but the guy responsible for it is unwilling to open ports for SQL Server, and is unable to support PPTP forwarding. The admin did open VNC, on a non-stanrdard port, but since they have a dynamic IP it is difficult to find them all the time. In the past i have created a VPN connection that connects back to our network. But that didn't work so well, since when i need access i have to ask the computer-phobic users to double-click the icon and press Connect i did try creating a scheduled task that attempts to keep the VPN connection back to our office up at all times by running: >rasdial "vpn to me" But after a few months the VPN connection went insane, and thought it was both, and neither, connected an disconnected; and the vpn connection wouldn't work again until the server was rebooted. Can anyone think of a way where i can access the customer's LAN that doesn't involve opening ports on the router needing to know their external IP customer interaction of any kind Blah blah blah use vpn vnc protocol has known weaknesses you are unwise to lower your defenses it's not wise to expose SQL Server directly to the internet you stole that line from Empire Customer doesn't care about any of that. Customer wants things to work.

  • pptpd configuration

    - by Ian R.
    I would like a little help on configuring pptp so I can use my server as a vpn server since I have 10 ip's on it and I travel a lot so that would really help me and my partners. I managed to install everything needed but my vpn client fails to connect due to some reason that I cannot understand. I know there are 2 files in pptp that you're supposed to edit so I will post my 2 files here: /etc/ppp/pptpd-options name pptpd refuse-pap refuse-chap refuse-mschap require-mschap-v2 require-mppe-128 proxyarp nodefaultroute lock nobsdcomp /etc/pptpd.conf option /etc/ppp/pptpd-options logwtmp localip xx.158.177.231 remoteip xx.158.177.103,xx.158.177.116,xx.158.177.121,xx.158.177.124,xx.158.177.125,xx.158.177.131,xx.158.177.134,xx.158.177.139,xx.158.177.142,xx.158.177.145 interfaces file eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.231 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 inet6 addr: xx80::216:3eff:fe51:31ba/64 Scope:Link UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:56352 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:3xx15 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:1000 RX bytes:4884030 (4.8 MB) TX bytes:6780974 (6.7 MB) Interrupt:16 eth0:1 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.103 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:2 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.116 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:3 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.121 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:4 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.124 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:5 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.125 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:6 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.131 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:7 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.134 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:8 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.139 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:9 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.142 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 eth0:10 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:16:3e:51:31:ba inet addr:xx.158.177.145 Bcast:xx.158.177.255 Mask:255.255.254.0 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 Interrupt:16 lo Link encap:Local Loopback inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0 inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1 RX packets:3 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:3 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:0 RX bytes:286 (286.0 B) TX bytes:286 (286.0 B)

  • How to block a program from using IPv4?

    - by Ian Boyd
I have a program that can communicate over IPv4 (TCP and UDP) and over IPv6 (TCP and UDP). I want to block the program from being able to use IPv4. I tried the Windows Firewall: Except it blocks IP sub-protocols (e.g. TCP, UDP, encapsulated IPv6, GRE), rather than blocking IPv4 itself. In other words, I need to block IPv4: IPv4/TCP IPv4/UDP IPv4/ICMPv4 IPv4/GRE IPv4/L2TP while allowing IPv6: IPv6/TCP IPv6/UDP IPv6/ICMPv6 IPv6/GRE IPv6/L2TP Can I block a program from using IPv4? Note: If it cannot be done, then don't be afraid to add that as an answer. There's no shame in giving the correct answer to a question.

  • Access denied error 3221225578 with file sharing to Windows server

    - by Ian Boyd
i'm trying to access the shares on a server. The credential box appears, and i enter in a correct username and password, and i get access denied. The silly thing is that i can Remote Desktop to the server (using the same credentials), and i can check the Security event log for the access denied errors: Event Type: Failure Audit Event Source: Security Event Category: Account Logon Event ID: 681 Date: 3/19/2011 Time: 11:54:39 PM User: NT AUTHORITY\SYSTEM Computer: STALWART Description: The logon to account: Administrator by: MICROSOFT_AUTHENTICATION_PACKAGE_V1_0 from workstation: HARPAX failed. Table 1 - Error Codes for Event ID 681 Error Code Reason for Logon Failure 3221225578 The username is correct, but the password is wrong. Which would seem to indicate that the username is correct, but the password is wrong. i've tried the password many times, uppercase, lowercase, on different user accounts, with and without prefixing the username with servername\username. What gives that i cannot access the server over file sharing, but i can access it over RDP?

  • How to place SuperFetch cache on an SSD?

• Installing WindowsAuthentication breaks authentication / web.config?

    - by Ian Quigley
I have a clean Windows 2008 R2 box (on a VM) and have installed IIS 7.5 with default options. I then copied a website to it (from Windows 7, IIS 7) and after a little tweaking the website is working fine. The website is currently using and working with Anonymous Authentication. I have gone back to the Windows Components/Sever Manager, Roles - Security and ticked and installed Windows Authentication. When I check my server in IIS (top level above sites) - Authentication, I see Anonymous Authentication (enabled) ASP.NET Impersonation (disabled) Forms Authentication (disbaled) Windows Authentication (enabled) When I check my default website - Authentication, I see as above but "Retrieving status" and an error dialog saying There was an error while performing this operation. Details: Filename c:\inetpub\wwwroot\screwturnwiki\web.config Line number: 96 Error: This configuration section cannot be used in this path. This happens when the section is being locked at the parent level. Locking is either by default (overriderModeDefault="Deny"), or set explicity by a location tag with overrideMode="Deny" or the legacy allowOverride="False". I have tried hand editing the web.config with no success. UN-installing Windows Authentication happily returns my site to working with Anonymous Authentication, and allows me to enable/disable these three options. FYI. I am using ScrewTurnWiki with the Active Directory plug in.

  • Forwarding email in a specific folder only

    - by Ian
I ran across a post on Super User that addressed a question about Outlook email forwarding. One user provided a script to utilize. Sub AutoForwardAllSentItems(Item As Outlook.MailItem) Dim strMsg As String Dim myFwd As Outlook.MailItem Set myFwd = Item.Forward myFwd.Recipients.Add "[email protected]" myFwd.Send Set myFwd = Nothing End Sub This worked good for me, but how would it work if I want to just automatically forward email in a specific folder only? The folder already has email auto directed to it upon receipt. Any ideas?

  • Can MS Services for Unix be deployed and accessed from a shared drive?

    - by Ian C.
I'm interested in experimenting with replacing our dependency on MKS with MS' Sevices for Unix toolset. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with deploying SFU on a shared drive? We like to, wherever possible, host our dev tools on one central NAS and call to the NAS to access the tools instead of rolling stuff out to each and every desktop. I'm not interested in the NFS support or ActiveState Perl. Really, none of the daemon technology is required here. I'm looking for replacements for the coreutils/binutils stuff you find in Linux (and MKS on Windows): sed, awk, csh, bash, grep, ls, find -- the meat-and-potates command line apps that our build and test scripts are built around. If I limit the install to just the Interix GNU Components (and maybe the Remote Connectivity components) will is run nicely from a shared location? To head off some questions: Yes, I've looked at Cygwin. Unfortunately it's performance in our build and test environment is poor. It runs considerably slower than MKS and it's not a direct drop-in replacement for MKS (thanks to its internal pathing and limitations with commands like 'ps'), so it's a tougher sell. Yes, I'm looking at the MinGW offering in parallel to this.

  • Why does it take so long to finalize the HTML 5 spec?

    - by EpsilonVector
I was reading this and one sentence caught my eye (emphasis mine): So Ian Hickson, XHTML’s biggest critic, fathered HTML 5, an action-oriented toddler specification that won’t reach adulthood until 2022, although some of it can be used today. Is that true? Is that really the HTML 5 development cycle? Why is it taking so long? What makes it so difficult to get right that it won't be final until 11 years from now?
