  • Two interesting big data sessions around Openworld

    For those who want to talk (not listen) about big data, here are 2 very cool sessions: BOF9877 - A birds of a feather session around all things big data. It is on Monday, Oct 1, 6:15 PM - 7:00 PM - Marriott Marquis - Golden Gate. While all guests on the panel are special, we will have very special guest on the panel. He is a proud owner of a Big Data Appliance (see here). Then there is a Big Data SIG meeting (the invite from Gwen): I'd like to invite everyone to our OOW12 meet up. We'll meet on Tuesday, October 2nd, 8:45 to 9:45 at Moscone West Level 3, Overlook 3. We will network, socialize and discuss plans for the group. Which topics interest us for webinars? Which conferences do we want to meet in? What other activities we are interested in? We can also discuss big data topics, show off our great work, and seek advice on the challenges.   • Using R on your Oracle Data Warehouse

    Since it is Predictive Analytics World in our backyard (or are we San Francisco’s backyard…?) I figured it is well worth the time to dust of some old but important news. With big data (should we start calling it “any data analytics” instead?) being the buzz word and analytics the key operative goal, not moving data around is becoming more and more critical to the business users. Why? Because instead of spending time on moving data around into your next analytics server you should be running analytics on those CPUs. You could always do this with Oracle Data Mining within the Oracle Database. But a lot of folks want to leverage R as their main tool.   • multi-thread in mmorpg server

    For MMORPG, there is a tick function to update every object's state in a map. The function was triggered by a timer in fixed interval. So each map's update can be dispatch to different thread. At other side, server handle player incoming package have its own threads also: I/O threads. Generally, the handler of the corresponding incoming package run in I/O threads. So there is a problem: thread synchronization. I have consider two methods: Synchronize with mutex. I/O thread lock a mutex before execute handler function and map thread lock same mutex before it execute map's update. Execute all handler functions in map's thread, I/O thread only queue the incoming handler and let map thread to pop the queue then call handler function. These two have a disadvantage: delay. For method 1, if the map's tick function is running, then all clients' request need to waiting the lock release. For method 2, if map's tick function is running, all clients' request need to waiting for next tick to be handle. Of course, there is another method: add lock to functions that use data which will be accessed both in I/O thread & map thread. But this is hard to maintain and easy to goes incorrect. It needs carefully check all variables whether or not accessed by both two kinds thread. My problem is: is there better way to do this? Notice that I said map is logic concept means no interactions can happen between two map except transport. I/O thread means thread in 3rd part network lib which used to handle client request.

  • Curl Error 52 Empty reply from server

    Hello I have a cron job setup on one server to run a backup script in PHP that is hosted on another server. The command I've been using is formatted like this: curl -sS http://www.example.com/backup.php Lately I've been getting this error when the Cron runs curl: (52) Empty reply from server I have no idea what this means. If I go to the link directly in my browser the script runs fine and I get my little backup zip file. Can anyone help? Thanks, Paul

    Hello, I have been looking for an alternative to Hibernate for various reasons. I came across Liquibase and i like the idea so i am willing to try it. Liquibase will cater for database creation/modification in a SQL independent fashion. My main question is how does my code in my application execute SQL statements without being database dependent?     Hi, I want to develop a web application using HTML, CSS and Javascript one thing that is really annoying is that any link or button etc when clicked inside the Android browser gets highlighted with a green border. To demonstrate what I mean I have included a link to a page that contains a basic game written in CSS http://marbles2.com/app/ Is there any way that you are aware of to disable the click green border?   • XDocument unable to digest url in header if encountered twice

    Hi there, I am consuming an xml response from a government gateway which contains a url in its root node twice (being firstly xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.govtalk.gov.uk/CM/envelope" and also xmlns="http://www.govtalk.gov.uk/CM/envelope") XDocument will only parse this if I pull out the second one (the xmlns one) from the node. Is there some way I can prepare XDocument to digest this repeated URL without having to manipulate the incoming xml in any way? Thanks Paul

  • JQuery overriding the themeroller style

    Hi, In my accordian control I want to override the header style to show a red background instead of the default theme colour if ever the user control (e.g user's name and address input) in that particular pane returns a validation boolean of false. I'm ok with how to use .Toggle to change the class but can't figure out how to grab the themeroller class in the first place. How would I do this? Thanks Paul

  • CustomRenderer for AutoComplete using google closure library

    I'm looking to use one of the AutoComplete subclasses(Rich,Remote,RichRemote) and I'd like to use a CustomRenderer, however I don't see instructions for this and reading the documentation/source it appears that the Remote subclass is instantiated with a renderer of "var renderer = new goog.ui.AutoComplete.Renderer();" leaving me no option to change it while instantiating. Is there a setRenderer method on the AutoComplete base class similar to that on the goog.ui.Controls classes? Thanks, Paul

    Hi all, In general, it seems that the majority of times that ConnectionDroppedHandler would get called in an OCS server application is for expected reasons e.g. server application has been unregistered, server is shutting down, etc. Are there any unexpected situations in which ConnectionDroppedHandler can be called? Basically, i'm wondering whether it will ever be necessary to log an error to the event log from this event handler. Many thanks, Paul

  • OPS4j repository alternative

    The OPS4J repository is down at present and I am trying to run pax-provision using a profile for spring-dm. My question is how do I tell maven to locate the profile information from a site other than ops4j.org. Is this possible? ideally I would like to cache all the packages from the repo especially the spring-dm details which seem never to be cached and are downloaded all the time making coding on the train and times when the site is down impossible.   • Will apple allow an odds application?

    Hi, This is a hypothetical question. If one would develop an iPhone/iPad (Universal) odds application, whould apple allow this to the appstore? This application would not let you bet on odds directly, but would collect odds from different odds sites and show them to the user.   • Deallocation doesn't free mem. in Windows/C++ Application

    Hi, My Windows/C++ application allocates ~1Gb of data in memory with the new operator and processes this data. The data is deleted after processing. I noticed that if I run the processing again without exiting the application, the second call to "new" operator to allocate ~1gb of data fails. I would expect Windows to deliver back the memory again. Could this be managed in a better way with some other win32 calls etc. ? Thanks, Paul

    Hi I am trying when user clicks on one of the images seen here http://techavid.com/design/test.html That the image in background is only thing focused. All icons are greyed out until user clicks and when they do the colored version of the icon is only showing. Currently the color image of each icon appears behind the greyed out version when mouseover not active. Can this be done? thank you, paul
