• July, the 31 Days of SQL Server DMO’s – Day 3 (sys.dm_exec_connections)

    The third DMV we will review is the sys.dm_exec_connections DMV. This DMV is Server-Scoped and displays information about each and every current connection on your SQL Server Instance. Lets take a look at some information that this DMV returns. SELECT * FROM sys.dm_exec_connections After reviewing this DMV, in my opinion, its not a whole lot of useful information returned from this DMV from a monitoring or troubleshooting standpoint. The primary use case I have for this DMV is when I need to get a quick count of how many connections I have on one of my SQL Server boxes. For this purpose a quick SELECT COUNT(*) satisfies my need. However, for those who need it, there is other information such as what type of authentication a specific connection is using, network packet size, and client/local TCP ports being used. This information can come in handy for specific scenarios but you probably wont need it very much for your day to day monitoring/troubleshooting needs. However, this is still an important DMV that you should be aware of in the event that you need it. • Open World Day 2

  A Day in the Life of an Oracle OpenWorld Attendee Part III My second full day started with me waking up and realising that I was supposed to meet my friend Tejas Joshi (co-author of the Oracle Exalogic Elastic Cloud Handbook) at the station in 20 minutes!  Needless to say I didn’t make it, but then I felt better later when I found out he had caught the wrong shuttle bus and ended up at the airport instead of the BART! The morning was spent in the Authors Seminar arranged to give authors a whirlwind tour of Oracle Product updates and strategy plans.  It was useful to see what was happening in areas I knew little or nothing about.  In the afternoon I wandered around Java One, a very different show to OpenWorld with much more bleeding edge stuff and just plain blue sky thinking.  Of course who couldn’t love a show with a full size Duke wondering around and available for photographs. Attended a presentation on a highly available Weblogic JMS environment wich did a great job of laying out to architect a highly available solution. Dinner with customers and then collapsed exhausted into bed!

  The Oracle Day event took place in Toronto yesterday at the Hyatt Regency Hotel downtown.  Attendance was excellent and it was standing room only at the keynote sessions.   Anytime the venue has to bring in chairs to handle the overflow crowd, you know there is a lot of interest! • The most efficent ways for drawing lines all day long with OpenGL

  I'd like to put a computer screen that is running an OpenGL programs in a room. It has to run all day long (not in the night). I'd like to draw lines that are slowly fading in the background. The setting is simple: a uniform color background (say, black) and colored lines (say, white) that are slowly fading out. With slowly I mean.. hours. Say that the first line I draw is with alpha 255 (fully visible), after one hours is 240. After 10 hours is 105. One line could have 250 points and there will be like 300 line in one day. For now I have done a prototype with very rudimentary method like: glBegin( GL_LINE_STRIP ); iterator = point_list.begin(); for (++iterator, end = point_list.end(); iterator != end; ++iterator) { const Vec3D &v = *iterator; glVertex2f(v.x(), v.y()); } glEnd(); More efficient method?

• Day in the Life of Agile - The Forge Michigan November 27, 2012

  Went to training at The Forge yesterday and did a Day in the life of Agile with Pillar.  It was pretty good. Check them out at: http://pillartechnology.com/ Abstract: A single-day agile project simulation that is engaging, educational, provocative, and fun. This simulation introduces concepts like time-boxed iterations, User Stories, collective estimation, commitment to a product owner for iteration scope, formal verification ritual at iteration conclusion, tracking velocity, and making results big and visible through charts. The exercise is designed to simulate not only how agile teams and practices work, but the inevitable challenges that arise as teams attempt to adopt such practices. One of the best parts of this training was getting some hands on experience with agile.  We used a program called Scratch to create an arcade video game.  Our team chose Frogger.  We had 3 iterations at 20 minutes each.  I think we did pretty good but in the panic of trying to get a bunch done in only 20 minutes made it interesting. • Insanity Day 3

  So on Tuesday (Sept 25th) I did my 2nd Insanity workout (for those keeping track, I’m not counting the fit test as #1) and it was MURDER on my legs. I wasn’t able to get to it yesterday, and I’m noticing a trend in this first week – I can easily push to do it every 2nd day, but life is just too crazy busy right now (yeah yeah, excuses right? I look at it more like priorities – I have a tech conference I’m running next week, crazy days right now). Today I moved to the 3rd workout – but honestly I couldn’t get into it. It was the cardio recovery day, which is a lot of stretching and stuff. I think if I had been doing the first two sessions back to back I’d need it, but I didn’t want to cool down today – I wanted to push! So I moved to the next DVD in the series but for some reason couldn’t get it to run on my computer, even with SlyDVD. So – back to Disc 1 and the Plyometric Cardio Circuit! Fantastic workout again this morning. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not all of a sudden in amazing shape, but I am noticing already that I seem to be somewhat better – I’m really looking forward to my next fit test at the end of the month!

• Big Data – Operational Databases Supporting Big Data – RDBMS and NoSQL – Day 12 of 21

  In yesterday’s blog post we learned the importance of the Cloud in the Big Data Story. In this article we will understand the role of Operational Databases Supporting Big Data Story. Even though we keep on talking about Big Data architecture, it is extremely crucial to understand that Big Data system can’t just exist in the isolation of itself. There are many needs of the business can only be fully filled with the help of the operational databases. Just having a system which can analysis big data may not solve every single data problem. Real World Example Think about this way, you are using Facebook and you have just updated your information about the current relationship status. In the next few seconds the same information is also reflected in the timeline of your partner as well as a few of the immediate friends. After a while you will notice that the same information is now also available to your remote friends. Later on when someone searches for all the relationship changes with their friends your change of the relationship will also show up in the same list. Now here is the question – do you think Big Data architecture is doing every single of these changes? Do you think that the immediate reflection of your relationship changes with your family member is also because of the technology used in Big Data. Actually the answer is Facebook uses MySQL to do various updates in the timeline as well as various events we do on their homepage. It is really difficult to part from the operational databases in any real world business. Now we will see a few of the examples of the operational databases. Relational Database is pretty much everywhere in most of the businesses which are here for many years. The importance and existence of the relational database are always going to be there as long as there are meaningful structured data around. There are many different kinds of relational databases for example Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL and many others. If you are looking for Open Source and widely accepted database, I suggest to try MySQL as that has been very popular in the last few years. I also suggest you to try out PostgreSQL as well. Besides many other essential qualities PostgreeSQL have very interesting licensing policies. PostgreSQL licenses allow modifications and distribution of the application in open or closed (source) form. One can make any modifications and can keep it private as well as well contribute to the community. I believe this one quality makes it much more interesting to use as well it will play very important role in future. Nonrelational Databases (NOSQL) We have also covered Nonrelational Dabases in earlier blog posts. NoSQL actually stands for Not Only SQL Databases. There are plenty of NoSQL databases out in the market and selecting the right one is always very challenging. Here are few of the properties which are very essential to consider when selecting the right NoSQL database for operational purpose. Data and Query Model Persistence of Data and Design Eventual Consistency Scalability Though above all of the properties are interesting to have in any NoSQL database but the one which most attracts to me is Eventual Consistency. Eventual Consistency RDBMS uses ACID (Atomicity, Consistency, Isolation, Durability) as a key mechanism for ensuring the data consistency, whereas NonRelational DBMS uses BASE for the same purpose. Base stands for Basically Available, Soft state and Eventual consistency. Eventual consistency is widely deployed in distributed systems. It is a consistency model used in distributed computing which expects unexpected often. In large distributed system, there are always various nodes joining and various nodes being removed as they are often using commodity servers. This happens either intentionally or accidentally. Even though one or more nodes are down, it is expected that entire system still functions normally. Applications should be able to do various updates as well as retrieval of the data successfully without any issue. Additionally, this also means that system is expected to return the same updated data anytime from all the functioning nodes. Irrespective of when any node is joining the system, if it is marked to hold some data it should contain the same updated data eventually. As per Wikipedia - Eventual consistency is a consistency model used in distributed computing that informally guarantees that, if no new updates are made to a given data item, eventually all accesses to that item will return the last updated value. In other words -  Informally, if no additional updates are made to a given data item, all reads to that item will eventually return the same value. • Microsoft BUILD 2013 Day 1&ndash;Keynote

The keynote for the first day of BUILD 2013 was kicked off by Steve Balmer.  He made it very clear that Microsoft’s focus is on accelerating its time to market with products and product updates.  His quote was that “Rapid release” is the new norm.  He continued by showing off several new Lumias that have been buzzing around the internet for a while and announce that Sprint will now be carrying the HTC 8XT and Samsung ATIV. Balmer is known for repeating words or phrase for affect.  This time it was “Rapid release, rapid release” and “Touch, touch, touch, touch, touch, …”.  This was fun, but even more fun was when he announce that all attendees would receive an Acer Iconia 8” tablet. SCORE! The next subject Balmer focused on is new apps.  The three new ones were Flipboard, Facebook and NFL Fantasy Football.  I liked the first two because these are ones that people coming from other platforms are missing.  The NFL app is great just because it targets a demographic that can be fanatical.  If these types of apps keep coming than the missing app argument goes away. While many Negative Nancy’s are describing Windows 8.1 as Windows 180 Steve Balmer chose to call it a “refined blend” as in a coffee that has been improved with a new mix.  This includes more multi-tasking options and leveraging Bing straight throughout the entire ecosystem. He ended this first section by explaining that this will also bring more Bing development opportunities to the community. Steve Balmer was followed by Julie Larson-Green who spent her time on stage selling us on Windows 8 all over again from my point of view.  Something that I would not have thought was needed until I had listened to some other attendees who had a number of concerns and complaints.  She showed a number of new gestures that will come with Windows 8.1, and while they were cool I was left wondering if they really improved the experience.  I guess only time will tell. I did like the fact that it the UI implementation to bring up “All Apps” now mirrors that of Windows Phone.  The consistency is a big step forward that I hope to see continue.  The cool factor went up from there as she swiped content from a desktop (mega-tablet) to the XBox One.  This seamless experience I believe is what is really needed for any future platform to be relevant. I was much more enthused by the presentation of Antoine Leblond who humbled us by letting us know that there are 5k new API.  How that can be or how anyone would ever use all of them is another question.  His announcement was that the Visual Studio 2013 preview would be available today along with the Windows 8.1 bits.  One of the features of VS2013 that he demonstrated is the power consumption profiler.  With battery life being a key factor with consumer consumption devices this is a welcome addition. He didn’t limit his presentation to VS2013 features though.  He showed how the Store has been redesigned to enable better search and discoverability of apps and how Win 8.1 can perform multiple screen scales depending on the resolution of the device automatically.  The last feature he demoed was the real time video streaming API which he made sure we understood by attaching a Surface to a little robot.  Oh, but there was one more thing.  Antoine and Julie announce that all attendees would also be getting Surface Pros.  BONUS! How much more could there be?  Gurdeep Singh Pall was about to pile on.  He introduced us to Bing as a platform (BaaP?).  He said if they (Microsoft) could do something with and API that is good 3rd party developers can do something that is dynamite and showed us some of the tools they had produced.  These included natural user interface improvements such as voice commands that looked to put Siri to shame.  Add to that 3D, OCR and translation capabilities and the future looks to be full of opportunities. Balmer then came out to show us one last thing.  Project Spark is a game design environment that will be available for Windows 8.1, XBox 360 and XBox One.  All I can say is that if my kids get their hands on this they are going to be able to learn some of what dad does in a much more enjoyable way. • Cisco ASA 5510 Time of Day Based Policing

  I have a Cisco ASA 5510 setup at a boarding school. I determined that many (most?) of the students were downloading files, watching movies, etc, during the day and this was causing the academic side of our network to suffer. The students should not even be in their rooms during the day, so I configured the ASA to police their network segment and limit their outbound bandwidth. This resolved all of our academic issues, and everyone was happy. Except the resident students. I have been asked to change/remove the policing policy at the end of the day, to allow the residents access to the unused bandwidth at night. There's no reason to let bandwidth sit unused at night just because it would be abused during the day. Is there a way to setup Time of Day based Policies on the ASA? Ideally I'd like to be able to open up the network at night and all day during weekends. If I can't set Time based policies, is is possible to schedule the ASA to load a set of commands at a specific time? I suppose I could just setup a scheduled task on one of our servers to log in and make the changes with a simple script, but this seems like a hack, and I'm hoping there is a better or more standard way to accomplish this. Thanks. Edit: If there is a totally different solution that would accomplish a similar goal, I'd be interested in that as well. Free/Cheap would be ideal, but if a separate internet connection is my only other option, it might be worth fighting for money for hardware or software to do this better or more efficiently.

  I have a query in which one of the fields contains the count of status. The status can change several times a day and the count should be based on the final status of the day. For instance, this is what I have for Status1. CountStatus1 = (from status in MyDataContext.StatusHistories where status.UserID == TheUserID where status.StatusDateTime.Month == TheMonth.Month where status.StatusDateTime.Year == TheMonth.Year where status.NewStatus == 1 // where the LAST STATUS OF THE DAY == 1 select status.StatusID).Count() The problem is that I want to select the last status of the day to be equal to 1, and count those. The status for a day can change from 1 to 4 to 2 to 5 to 3 and then to finally to 1; if I write the query like this, the count will include 2 1's and then the 4,2,5 and 3 will also be counted in CountStatus4, CountStatus3, CountStatus"n". The return data is a monthly report grouped by day, where each day is a row. The structure of the query looks like this: var OutputStatusReport = from w in MyDataContext.WorkHistory where w.UserID == TheUserID where w.WorkDatetime.Month == TheMonth.Month where w.WorkDatetime.Year == TheMonth.Year group w by w.Datetime.Date into daygroups select new MyObjectModel { CountStatus1 = ...., CountStatus2 = ...., CountStatus3 =...... }; So I need the day of the count to match the day of daygroups.
