  • Two DHCP Servers, Block Clients for one of them?

    I am building out a kickstart network that resides on a different VLAN uses its own DHCP server. For some reason, my kickstart clients kept getting assign IPs from my primary DHCP server. The way I have it set up is that I have a primary DHCP server on this router here: 192.168.15.1 Connected to that DHCP server is a switch with the IP of 192.168.15.2. My kickstart (Scientific Linux) server is connected to that switch on two ports: Port 2 - where the kickstart server communicates to the rest of the production network via eth0. The IP assigned to the server on that interface is 192.168.15.100 (on eth0). The details are: Interface: eth0 IP: 192.168.15.100 Netmask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: 192.168.15.1 Port 7 - has it's own VLAN ID (along with port 8). The kickstart server is connected to that port with the IP of 172.16.15.100 (on eth1). Again, the details are: Interface: eth1 IP: 172.16.15.100 Netmask: 255.255.255.0 Gateway: none The kickstart server runs its own DHCP server and assigns them over the eth1. Most of the kick starts are built over the kickstart VLAN through port 8. To prevent the kickstart DHCP server from assigning addresses over the production network, I have the route setup like so: route add -host 255.255.255.255 dev eth1 At this point, the clients kept getting assign IPs from the 192.168.15.1 DHCP server. I need to figure out a way to block client requests from reaching that DHCP. Its should be noted that but I also build KVM hosts on the kickstart server as well, so I need those KVMs to have the ability to get DHCP requests from the 192.168.15.1 DHCP server via the bridge network once I finish resolved this particular problem. (Currently, they communicate via NAT). So what would be done to resolve this? Through iptables or some sort of routing I need to put in?   • Remote reboot over ssh does not restart

    I would like to remotely reboot my Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server via ssh. I do sudo reboot and I loose connection and the server connection does not reappear. It does not ping. When I go the the physical computer with a screen attached I see a black screen and hear that the server is still on. I do a hard power off (press power on button for a few seconds) and the server halts. After I press power on the server boots with no problem. As far as I remember the remote reboot has previously worked on that server. I wonder if sudo reboot & will help? I suppose I could also try sudo shutdown -r and see if that does any difference. I have listed an excerpt of /etc/log/syslog below. The last thing it records is the stopping of the logging.   • How to play 24 fps video smoothly on a 60Hz display?

    I use mpc-hc to play videos on Win7 x64. With the default settings (#1), video playback is great most of the time. But for panning shots, playback is not smooth. I stepped through the video frame by frame and found that the panning movement is smooth (e.g. each frame shifts horizontally by 10 pixels), so the problem is how the 23.976 fps video is interpolated to 60Hz. The judder looks like what would be caused by a "2:3 pulldown", where the frames are played unevenly like: frame 1, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 3, 4, 4, 4, etc (#2) Using "optimal renderer settings" (#3) instead of the default disables the Aero theme and causes tearing. Setting my LCD display to 50Hz may have improved the judder slightly (but I can't really tell). My display does not support 24Hz or 48Hz, and forcing them in the Nvidia control panel gives blurry screen. I've tried other video players (VLC and KMPlayer), the ReClock Directshow Filter, video files from different sources (#4), turning on/off DXVA, and a computer with a different GPU, but the judder in the playback is similar. None of them solved the problem. So, how can I play 23.976 or 24 fps video smoothly on a 60Hz display? I think a video player could make the video smoother by doing linear interpolation, such as: 1. 100% frame 1 2. 60% frame 1 + 40% frame 2 3. 20% frame 1 + 80% frame 2 4. 80% frame 2 + 20% frame 3 5. 40% frame 2 + 60% frame 3 6. 100% frame 3 7. 60% frame 3 + 40% frame 4 .. etc Can any existing video player do this?   • To My 24 Year Old Self, Wherever You Are&hellip;

    A decade is a milestone in one’s life, regardless of when it occurs. 2011 might seem like a weird year to mark a decade, but 2001 was a defining year for me. It marked my emergence into the technology industry, an unexpected loss of innocence, and triggered an ongoing struggle with faith and belief. Once you go through a valley, climbing the mountain and looking back over where you travelled, you can take in the entirety of the journey. Over the last 10 years I kept journals, and in this new year I took some time to review them. For those today that are me a decade ago, I share with you what I’ve gleamed from my experiences. Take it for what it’s worth, and safe travels on your own journeys through life. Life is a Performance-Based Sport Have confidence, believe you’re capable, but realize that life is a performance-based sport. Everything you get in life is based on whether you can show that you deserve it. Performance is also your best defense against personal attacks. Just make sure you know what standards you’re expected to hit and if people want to poke holes at you let them do the work of trying to find them. Sometimes performance won’t matter though. Good things will happen to bad people, and bad things to good people. What’s important is that you do the right things and ensure the good and bad even out in your own life. How you finish is just as important as how you start. Start strong, end strong. Respect is Your Most Prized Reward Respect is more important than status or ego. The formula is simple: Performing Well + Building Trust + Showing Dedication = Respect Focus on perfecting your craft and helping your team and respect will come. Life is a Team Sport Whatever aspect of your life, you can’t do it alone. You need to rely on the people around you and ensure you’re a positive aspect of their lives; even those that may be difficult or unpleasant. Avoid criticism and instead find ways to help colleagues and superiors better whatever environment you’re in (work, home, etc.). Don’t just highlight gaps and issues, but also come to the table with solutions. At the same time though, stand up for yourself and hold others accountable for the commitments they make to the team. A healthy team needs accountability. Give feedback early and often, and make it verbal. Issues should be dealt with immediately, and positives should be celebrated as they happen. Life is a Contact Sport Difficult moments will happen. Don’t run from them or shield yourself from experiencing them. Embrace them. They will further mold you and reveal who you will become. Find Your Tribe and Embrace Your Community We all need a tribe: a group of people that we gravitate to for support, guidance, wisdom, and friendship. Discover your tribe and immerse yourself in them. Don’t look for a non-existent tribe just to fill the need of belonging though that will leave you empty and bitter when they don’t meet your unrealistic expectations. Try to associate with people more experienced and more knowledgeable than you. You’ll always learn, and you’ll always remember you have much to learn. Put yourself out there, get involved with the community. Opportunities will present themselves. When we open ourselves up to be vulnerable, we also give others the chance to do the same. This helps us all to grow and help each other, it’s very important. And listen to your wife. (Easter *is* a romantic holiday btw, regardless of what you may think.) Don’t Believe Your Own Press Clippings (and by that I mean the ones you write) Until you have a track record of performance to refer to, any notions of grandeur are just that: notions. You lose your rookie status through trials and tribulations, not by the number of stamps in your passport. Be realistic about your own “experience and leadership” and be honest when you aren’t ready for something. And always remember: nobody really cares about you as much as you think they do. Don’t Let Assholes Get You Down The world isn’t evil, but there is evil in the world. Know the difference and don’t paint all people with the same brush. Do be wary of those that use personal beliefs to describe their business (i.e. “We’re a [religion] company”). What matters is the culture of the organization, and that will tell you the moral compass and what is truly valued. Don’t make someone or something a priority that only makes you an option. Life is unfair and enemies/opponents will succeed when you fail. Don’t waste your energy getting upset at this; the only one that will lose out is you. As mentioned earlier, nobody really cares about you as much as you think they do. Misc Ecclesiastes is bullshit. Everything is certainly *not* meaningless. Software development is about delivery, not the process. Having a great process means nothing if you don’t produce anything. Watch “The Weatherman” (“It’s not easy, but easy doesn’t enter into grownup life.”). Read Tony Dungee’s autobiography, even if you don’t like football, and even if you aren’t a Christian. Say no, don’t feel like you have to commit right away when someone asks you to.

  • MSDN Live 2010 &ndash; Delivered : 24 sessions (4 x 6) on Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server

    We (Mikael Nitell and me) got a whole track on the Norwegian MSDN Live tour this year.  We did these as a pair, and covered 4 cities over 4 days, 6 sessions per day, taking 8 hours to come through it.  The Islandic volcano made the travels a bit rough, but we managed 6 flights out of 8. The first one had to go by van instead, 7-8 hour drive each way together with other MSDN Live presenters – a memorable tour! Oslo was the absolute top point.  We had to change hall to a bigger one. People were crowding, and even the big hall was packed!  The presentations were mostly based on demos, but we had a few slides as well.  They have been uploaded to my SkyDrive.  Info to aliens – some of the text may be Norwegian. The sessions were as follows: Overview of news in Visual Studio and Team Foundation server 2010 Ensuring Quality with VS/TFS 2010 Releasing products with VS/TFS 2010 No More No Repro with VS/TFS 2010 Performance Testing and Parallel Programming with VS/TFS 2010 Migrating to VS/TFS 2010 Tips, tricks, news and some best practices with VS/TFS 2010   In the coming days, I will post up examples from the demos too, with explanations of how they are intended to work. These entries will also contain stuff we had to remove from the actual presentations due to the time constraints. We managed to create recordings of two of the sessions, which will be uploaded to Channel 9 by Microsoft, afaik.   I will update this blog with information about exact locations when that is done. Everyone I know leaves their broadband router on all the time, and I've never heard of any negative impacts. Is leaving a consumer broadband router running 24/7 really problematic? Is the ISP in question being ridiculously paranoid?

  • Ubutu 14.04 triple screen, third screen black and X cursor

    I am having some issues getting my third screen working properly. I had triple screens working fine on 12.04, using 2 nvidia cards. Did a fresh install of 14.04 and having no end of problems getting it working. It either will just be disabled, or the screen is black with the cursor as an X. I can only enable it from the nvidia server settings tool. The Ubuntu native display settings won't even show the 3rd screen. I tried copying the xorg.conf from my old install, which upon restarting X worked fine on the login screen, but then it just sat there after I logged in and didn’t do anything (mouse was still working). I am using gnome-session-fallback instead of unity if that makes any difference. Still having these issues if I try unity though. How do I get my 3rd screen working and displaying a desktop? But I still have an issue of not able to click and drag ie Clicking the leftmouse button and dragging with another finger. It doesn't move! Maybe it doesn't detect the 2nd finger. When I check the capabilities of my Synaptics touchpad by using xinput list-props "SynPS/2 Synaptics TouchPad"|grep Capabilities I get the following output: Synaptics Capabilities (304): 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1 Please help me out.

  • Does my DLink DNS-323 need to reside on a "192.168.0.0/24" subnet?

    I've installed two brand new 2-tib drives in the DLink and plugged it in to my network. I set my router's static address table to include the MAC address of the device; however it doesn't ever "show up." Do I need to use the custom software to administer this device? Do I need to use a "192.168.0.0/24" network in order for this device to work (asking because it states that if DHCP isn't detected, it will default to an address in that range; and my network is not in that range).

    As part of my application requirements, I have a limit of 30 characters for an ID field. This is out of my control and I am wondering if the MongoDB default _id fields will work for me. It appears as though the default _id field is 24 characters long. That works for me, but I am wondering if this is likely to change in the future. I am well aware that things can always change, but, for the next year or two, can I expect there to be 24 character default _id fields?

[root@lb1 ~]# host 10.10.35.31 31.35.10.10.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer dis1.domain.com. OS is CentOS 6.3. Ipvsadm is ipvsadm-1.25-10.el6.x86_64. kernel is kernel-2.6.32-71.el6.x86_64. Keepalived is keepalived-1.2.7-1.el6.x86_64. How can we get ipvsadm -L to list all realservers by their proper hostnames?
