• JQuery cycle plugin + PNG overlay + Image alt text as title conflict

• Are you satisfied with your programming? [closed]

  If you are a programmer, are you satisfied with it? I really love to code. I code all kinds of things. I used to play computer games but they are not that interesting compared to developing a new search algorithm or similar. But sometimes I look into the future and see myself being 80 years old, sitting in front of a computer and everything I will have written will be rewritten because the programming languages do not exist anymore. I look back on my life and think "that's it?". Everything I wrote in the past is virtual and ultimately gone. I tried other things but coding is the only thing that does it for me. And at the same time I think I am wasting my life. What about you? Disclaimer: I presume this is the best forum for this question. If you don't agree suggest better place to migrate the question. • Changing Firefox Tab Cycle Order

  When you use Ctrl-Tab in Firefox, you move through tabs in the order that they are listed in the tab bar at the top of the window. I would prefer that when I use Ctrl-Tab the next tab that I switch to is the most resently used tab. That way if I have two tabs I am using frequently I can easily switch between them without having to manually modify the ordering of the tabs via drag/drop. This is a feature that Opera has which I find to be very productive. Does anyone know of a setting or plug-in that will accomplish this for me?

  I've been tasked with fixing a vendor's program that, under certain conditions, dumps gigs of junk files into a log directory. It ends up filling users' machines. My task is to figure out how to make it stop without any source code or additional running processes, and without making the program kasplode. In other words, I'm looking to use a feature of the file system to control the growth. One idea I had was to make a hard link from that folder to NUL, as you might with /dev/null in the linux world. However, my attempts to use the mklink program to create a junction result in a message that says Local volumes are required to complete the operation. Any ideas on how to complete the junction, or other ideas to solve the problem?

• How can I improve the battery life under 12.04 on my Inspiron 14z? [duplicate]

  This question already has an answer here: Tips to extend battery life for laptops and notebooks 24 answers How do I improve the battery life of my Inspiron 14z under Ubuntu 12.04? This laptop gets 4-5 hours of battery life using Windows (e.g. here). I've removed Windows, installed Ubuntu 12.04 and the initial battery life was only 2 hours. With some tweaks (described below) it's still only ~2.5 hours. For reference, the laptop is the latest model of the 14z: i5-3337U processor 32GB MSATA, 500GB HDD (5400rpm) AMD Radeon HD7570M graphics card I have put ext4 partitions on both the SSD and the HDD, and have mounted / to the SSD and /home to the HDD. I also put a 24gb linux swap partition at the start of the HDD, though I figure this won't be used all that much (the laptop has 8gb of RAM). After googling around and reading Ask Ubuntu and other sites extensively, I have done the following steps, and they have improved the battery life ~30 minutes (exact improvement not clear, but battery life is still nowhere near 4-5 hours). Installed Jupiter (and set Performance to "Power Saving") Installed laptop-mode-tools cat /proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode now outputs 5 (previously it output 0) But it's not clear that this will help: AskUbuntu question Turned down the brightness of my screen from full to 1/3 Other things I have heard about but have not tried for fear of frying the laptop or my linux install: Add "pcie_aspm=force" at the end of the line with "quiet splash" in /boot/grub/grub.cfg Enable ALPM, but it may already be enabled in 12.04? Enable i915 framebuffer compression Use a propietary driver for the graphics card? Turn off the graphics card? (what would happen if I relied on the internal Intel bridge?) Use TLP? Spin down the HDD more aggressively (howto, but I think laptop-mode-tools does this already) The only other thing I've noticed is that plastic just above the F5, F6 and F7 keys gets really hot. According to Jupiter my CPU temperature is only 69 celsius and the System Monitor shows CPU load at 7% so I don't think it's the CPU. Maybe it's the graphics card? Also, I've set up MongoDB and LAMP on the machine as well. When I run powertop MongoDB is high in the list, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to battery life because I'm not actually doing anything with MongoDB most of the time. • Trying to find the life expectancy of an unused flash card like SD

  I read in the What's the life expectancy of an SD card? post SD cards are rated to hold data at something like 10 years sitting idle. I recall reading (not sure where) about re-energizing cards by occasionally inserting into a reader. Everything I read rates in read/write cycles and not physical decay. I'm wonder if buying a new sd card for every photo shoot would be beneficial if I could store the cards in a lock box? I was hoping for something much longer. Does anyone else agree with 10 years or maybe something more?

  I posted a question about the Laserjet 8100DN earlier here: http://serverfault.com/questions/139043/buying-an-old-laser-printer-what-will-need-to-be-replaced and from doing some more research I have a new question: I found the "maintence interval" -- "the interval at which you should install a maintenance kit" (which is a fuser and rollers), and it is...350,000 pages. BUT, when I look at the specs for an HP 8100 fuser, it says the fuser has a life span of 150,000 pages. What gives? – Will the fuser go bad after 150 or 350? ==== BTW I hope it's ok to ask another similar question in a new thread -- I'm just following instructions from my thread on the topic at Meta.

• SPARC T3-1 Record Results Running JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Day in the Life Benchmark with Added Batch Component

  Using Oracle's SPARC T3-1 server for the application tier and Oracle's SPARC Enterprise M3000 server for the database tier, a world record result was produced running the Oracle's JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications Day in the Life benchmark run concurrently with a batch workload. The SPARC T3-1 server based result has 25% better performance than the IBM Power 750 POWER7 server even though the IBM result did not include running a batch component. The SPARC T3-1 server based result has 25% better space/performance than the IBM Power 750 POWER7 server as measured by the online component. The SPARC T3-1 server based result is 5x faster than the x86-based IBM x3650 M2 server system when executing the online component of the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0.1 Day in the Life benchmark. The IBM result did not include a batch component. The SPARC T3-1 server based result has 2.5x better space/performance than the x86-based IBM x3650 M2 server as measured by the online component. The combination of SPARC T3-1 and SPARC Enterprise M3000 servers delivered a Day in the Life benchmark result of 5000 online users with 0.875 seconds of average transaction response time running concurrently with 19 Universal Batch Engine (UBE) processes at 10 UBEs/minute. The solution exercises various JD Edwards EnterpriseOne applications while running Oracle WebLogic Server 11g Release 1 and Oracle Web Tier Utilities 11g HTTP server in Oracle Solaris Containers, together with the Oracle Database 11g Release 2. The SPARC T3-1 server showed that it could handle the additional workload of batch processing while maintaining the same number of online users for the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Day in the Life benchmark. This was accomplished with minimal loss in response time. JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0.1 takes advantage of the large number of compute threads available in the SPARC T3-1 server at the application tier and achieves excellent response times. The SPARC T3-1 server consolidates the application/web tier of the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.0.1 application using Oracle Solaris Containers. Containers provide flexibility, easier maintenance and better CPU utilization of the server leaving processing capacity for additional growth. A number of Oracle advanced technology and features were used to obtain this result: Oracle Solaris 10, Oracle Solaris Containers, Oracle Java Hotspot Server VM, Oracle WebLogic Server 11g Release 1, Oracle Web Tier Utilities 11g, Oracle Database 11g Release 2, the SPARC T3 and SPARC64 VII+ based servers. This is the first published result running both online and batch workload concurrently on the JD Enterprise Application server. No published results are available from IBM running the online component together with a batch workload. The 9.0.1 version of the benchmark saw some minor performance improvements relative to 9.0. When comparing between 9.0.1 and 9.0 results, the reader should take this into account when the difference between results is small. I want to add objects of classes which inherit into boost::ptr_vector: class IClass { virtual void someFunc() = 0; }; class CFirst : public IClass { }; class CSecond : public IClass { }; boost::ptr_vector<IClass> objectsList; objectsList.push_back(new CFirst()); objectsList.push_back(new CSecond()); And now my goal is to call function (which is declarated in IClass) from all objects in objectsList. I'd prefer to use BOOST_FOREACH: foreach(IClass tempObj, objectsList) { tempObj.someFunc(); } The problem is that IClass - abstract class, so I can't make instance of it for the foreach-cycle. What should I do?

  I'm afraid this question is pretty basic, but I think it's relevant to a lot of Objective-C programmers who are getting into blocks. What I've heard is that since blocks capture local variables referenced within them as const copies, using self within a block can result in a retain cycle, should that block be copied. So, we are supposed to use __block to force the block to deal directly with self instead of having it copied. __block typeof(self) bself = self; [someObject messageWithBlock:^{ [bself doSomething]; }]; instead of just [someObject messageWithBlock:^{ [self doSomething]; }]; What I'd like to know is the following: if this is true, is there a way that I can avoid the ugliness (aside from using GC)?

• Solr adding document cycle & wait on response issue

  I am trying to send http post request to Solr for adding 50000 documents (all individual request one after another in while loop). I am using DefaultHttpClient in java to connect to Solr and when I use execute method on my HttpPost Solr takes 3 to 4 ms to response. I have commit=false, autoCommit=false, autoSoftCommit=false. My question is why it takes that much time to response and why cycle it follows to add new document. Basically I want to send add request but do not want to commit to see how many request can Solr handle without doing any kind of commits(without having to do any disk access). My guess is with above parameter tuned off I should be hitting Solr about 10000 times every second, but my result is 300 times a second. I am generating random data to add in my code.
