• Starting Spring Lineup

  This morning I finished removing all VS2008 related frameworks and installed items related to VS2010 based on posts around the community.  Here’s what I started with on my dev laptop, the config for my laptop:  HP Pavilion dv6  Win7 64-bit 4Gb RAM Installed Developer Tools and Frameworks: Sync 2.0 SDK Visual Studio 2010 Pex Power Tools Enterprise Library 5.0 SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition Visual Studio 2008 Ultimate Expression Blend 4 RC Team Foundation Server 2010 Team Foundation Server 2010 SDK   The only item I did not reinstall on top of VS2010 was ReSharper 4.5 only because I read mixed reviews on the dev experience.  At this point I really just want to get use to the new(er) IDEs without adding any confusion to my dev machine.  I’ll level off my desire for early adoption at Blend, EntLib 5.0, and Pex - I’m also interested in the Moles integration as well.   Something else I didn’t have to install was my IDE theme which was left behind in my user folder was merged during installation – afterwards it was nice to see once the dust settled.

• Avatar (spoiler alert!)

  This past weekend we finally saw “Avatar,” or as I like to call it “Dances with Smurfs.”  It was rather light on the story, heavy on the message, and incredibly well done.  The eye for detail is what blew me away, especially the visual distortion (presumably due to density) when the two atmospheres mixed.  The only thing I thought they might have missed was why so many (presumably) mammals had 6 appendages (4 arms + 2 legs) and breathed through passages near their clavicles, but the Na’vi (sp?) didn’t have/do either.  Also, James Cameron just loves to telegraph upcoming events: Riding the big red bird thing has only happened 5 times before – Sully is on the job.  The tree is going to download dying Ripley to her avatar body – Sully is going to do that too.  I’ve seen worse foreshadowing, but not in a long time. I give it 4 Papa Smurfs out of 5.

  I just started to learn Java using Thinking in Java book, and have some troubles using ant. I'm using Ubuntu 12.04, and have openjdk 7 java installed. I also setup the CLASSPATH to be the code folder When I run ant in code folder, this is the output: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.RuntimeException: JDK 1.4.1 or higher is required to run the examples in this book. [CheckVersion] at com.bruceeckel.tools.CheckVersion.main(Unknown Source) However when I run java -version, this is the output: java version "1.6.0_27" OpenJDK Runtime Environment (IcedTea6 1.12.5) (6b27-1.12.5-0ubuntu0.12.04.1) OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 20.0-b12, mixed mode) How to setup ant and classpath correctly?

• What is the justification for Python's power operator associating to the right?

  I am writing code to parse mathematical expression strings, and noticed that the order in which chained power operators are evaluated in Python differs from the order in Excel. From http://docs.python.org/reference/expressions.html: "Thus, in an unparenthesized sequence of power and unary operators, the operators are evaluated from right to left (this does not constrain the evaluation order for the operands): -1*2 results in -1."* This means that, in Python: 2**2**3 is evaluated as 2**(2**3) = 2**8 = 256 In Excel, it works the other way around: 2^2^3 is evaluated as (2^2)^3 = 4^3 = 64 I now have to choose an implementation for my own parser. The Excel order is easier to implement, as it mirrors the evaluation order of multiplication. I asked some people around the office what their gut feel was for the evaluation of 2^2^3 and got mixed responses. Does anybody know of any good reasons or conciderations in favour of the Python implementation? And if you don't have an answer, please comment with the result you get from gut feel - 64 or 256?

• How can I create a temporary sandbox to compile from source?

  I want to follow the steps found here in order to run League of Legends under Ubuntu. According to the guide, I have to compile wine from source because it needs some patches. Compiling from source involves downloading quite a few dependency packages which I don't want to get mixed with the system and thus I'm wondering if there's a way to somehow isolate the whole "download dependencies packages and compile" process as I am only interested in the final wine binary. By isolating the compile process I can just copy the resulting binary and do a simple delete on the sandbox whereas doing it the naive way would require a more complex cleanup.

  When I start a new project, I often times immediately start thinking about the details of implementation. "Where am I gonna put the DataBaseHandler? How should I use it? Should classes that want to use it extend from some Abstract superclass..? Should I an interface? What level of abstraction am I going to use in my class that contains methods for sending requests and parsing data?" I end up stalling for a long time because I want to code for extensibility and reusability. But I feel it almost impossible to get past thinking about how to implement perfectly. • Unable to mount external hard drive

  Basically I my 12.10 update crashed halfway through, so I've had to start again and put all my data onto an external HDD. It was all going fine until this came up : Error mounting /dev/sdb1 at /media/amy/CA47-8339: Command-line `mount -t "vfat" -o "uhelper=udisks2,nodev,nosuid,uid=1000,gid=1000,shortname=mixed,dmask=0077,utf8=1,showexec,flush" "/dev/sdb1" "/media/amy/CA47-8339"' exited with non-zero exit status 32: mount: wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on /dev/sdb1, missing codepage or helper program, or other error In some cases useful info is found in syslog - try dmesg | tail or so When I tried to restore my info off the HDD. Now I'm stuck completely clueless as to how I'll get anything off the hard drive.

  I see that there's a lot of questions related to OO Programming here. I'm actually trying to find a specific resource related to embedded OO approaches for an 8 bit MCU. Several years back (maybe 6) I was looking for material related to Object Oriented programming for resource constrained 8051 microprocessors. I found an article/website with a case history of a design group that used a very small RAM part, and implemented many Object based constructs during their C design and development. I believe it was an 8051. The project was a success, and managed to stay inside the very small ROM/RAM they had available. I'm attempting to find it again, but Google can't locate it. The article was well written, and recommended a "mixed" approach using C methods for inheritance and encapsulation - if I recall correctly. Can anyone help me locate this article?

• Performing user authentication in a CodeIgniter controller constructor?

  In "The Clean Code Talks -- Unit Testing" (http://youtu.be/wEhu57pih5w), Miško Hevery mentions that "as little work as possible should be done in constructors [to make classes more easily testable]'. It got me thinking about the way I have implemented my user authentication mechanism. Having delved into MVC development through CodeIgniter, I designed my first web application to perform user authentication for protected resources in controllers' constructors in cases where every public function in that controller requires the user to be authenticated. For controllers with public methods having mixed authentication requirements, I would naturally move the authentication from the constructor to each method requiring authentication (though I don't currently have a need for this). I made this choice primarily to keep the controller tight, and to ensure that all resources in the controller are always covered. As for code longevity and maintainability: given the application structure, I can't foresee a situation in which one of the affected controllers would need a public method that didn't require user authentication, but I can see this as a potential drawback in general with this implementation (i.e., requiring future refactoring). Is this a good idea?

I can read the disk but can't change the permissions of a file I wanted. • manage spam and catchalls on google apps?

  I use google apps as my email system for my website. I have a catch all which fowards mail to some_account which forwards mail to my peronal account bc its rare to receive mail on my sites. Problem is emails that are caught by the catch all ALWAYS goes to junk. Junk emails are never forwarded so i dont receive them in my main gmail account thus i dont receive emails sent to the wrong [email protected]. So i wrote a filter that on my catch_all_user to never send to spam, which worked as i get those emails. But on my main account those emails dont show up as spam/junk. How do i get it forwarding but still marked as spam so its in its own junk folder instead of mixed up in my real mail?

I've read quite a few of the "essential" books (Clean Code, The Pragmatic Programmer, Code Complete, SICP, K&R). I'm considering reading Introduction to Algorithms. I've asked a few colleagues if reading it will improve my programming skills, and I got very mixed answers. A few said yes, a few said no, and a one said "only if you spend a lot of time implementing these algorithms" (I don't). So, I figured I'd ask Stack Exchange. Is it worth the time to read about algorithms if you're a professional programmer who seldom needs to use complex algorithms? For what it's worth, I have a strong mathematical background (have a 2 year degree in Mathematics; took Linear Algebra, Differential Equations, Calc I-III).

  My development team is considering implementing an eCommerce site using end-to-end SSL -- that is, every page on the site is accessed via an https:// URL -- rather than the more traditional "mixed mode" where most pages are accessed via http:// and only "secure" pages such as login and credit card entry are redirected to https://. Pros of doing such a "pure SSL" approach include avoidance of some session-hijacking attacks such as Firesheep; cons include performance considerations.   Like many other natty users on a university / academic network, I'm experiencing annoying frequent disconnects / hangs / delays. This file, it seems, does not exit by default, and needs to be manually created first: http://w1.fi/gitweb/gitweb.cgi?p=hostap.git;a=blob_plain;f=wpa_supplicant/README [quote] You will need to make a configuration file, e.g., /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf, with network configuration for the networks you are going to use.
