  • Camera Preview App in Android throwing many errors (Nexus 4)

    - by Jagatheesan Jack
    I am trying to develop a camera app that takes a picture and saves it in a SQLite database. I get a lot of errors when executing the application. My code is as below. Any idea? CameraActivity.java private Camera mCamera; private CameraPreview mPreview; private int CAMERA_RETURN_CODE=100; private static final String TAG = "Take_Picture"; public static final int MEDIA_TYPE_IMAGE = 1; public static final int MEDIA_TYPE_VIDEO = 2; private Bitmap cameraBmp; private int MAX_FACES = 1; private Face[] faceList; public RectF[] rects; private Canvas canvas; private Drawable pictureDataDrawable; private MySQLiteHelper database; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.camera_activity); //this.requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); //Create an instance of Camera mCamera = getCameraInstance(); setCameraDisplayOrientation(this, 0, mCamera); // Create our Preview view and set it as the content of our activity. mPreview = new CameraPreview(this, mCamera); FrameLayout preview = (FrameLayout) findViewById(R.id.camera_preview); preview.addView(mPreview); database = new MySQLiteHelper(getApplicationContext()); Button captureButton = (Button) findViewById(R.id.button_capture); captureButton.setOnClickListener( new View.OnClickListener() { private PictureCallback mPicture; @Override public void onClick(View v) { //mCamera.startPreview(); // get an image from the camera mCamera.takePicture(null, null, mPicture); PictureCallback mPicture = new PictureCallback() { @Override public void onPictureTaken(byte[] data, Camera camera) { try{ if (data != null) database.addEntry(data); //mCamera.startPreview(); } catch(Exception e){ Log.d(TAG, e.getMessage()); } } } ); } /** A safe way to get an instance of the Camera object. */ public static Camera getCameraInstance(){ Camera c = null; try { c = Camera.open(c.getNumberOfCameras()-1); // attempt to get a Camera instance } catch (Exception e){ // Camera is not available (in use or does not exist) } return c; // returns null if camera is unavailable } public static void setCameraDisplayOrientation(Activity activity, int cameraId, android.hardware.Camera camera) { android.hardware.Camera.CameraInfo info = new android.hardware.Camera.CameraInfo(); android.hardware.Camera.getCameraInfo(cameraId, info); int rotation = activity.getWindowManager().getDefaultDisplay() .getRotation(); int degrees = 360; /*switch (rotation) { case Surface.ROTATION_0: degrees = 0; break; case Surface.ROTATION_90: degrees = 90; break; case Surface.ROTATION_180: degrees = 180; break; case Surface.ROTATION_270: degrees = 270; break; }*/ int result; if (info.facing == Camera.CameraInfo.CAMERA_FACING_FRONT) { result = (info.orientation + degrees) % 360; result = (360 - result) % 360; // compensate the mirror } else { // back-facing result = (info.orientation - degrees + 360) % 360; } camera.setDisplayOrientation(result); } @Override protected void onPause() { super.onPause(); //releaseMediaRecorder(); // if you are using MediaRecorder, release it first releaseCamera(); // release the camera immediately on pause event } private void releaseCamera(){ if (mCamera != null){ mCamera.release(); // release the camera for other applications mCamera = null; } } public void startFaceDetection(){ // Try starting Face Detection Camera.Parameters params = mCamera.getParameters(); // start face detection only *after* preview has started if (params.getMaxNumDetectedFaces() > 0){ // camera supports face detection, so can start it: mCamera.startFaceDetection(); } } CameraPreview.java public class CameraPreview extends SurfaceView implements SurfaceHolder.Callback { private SurfaceHolder mHolder; private Camera mCamera; private String TAG; private List<Size> mSupportedPreviewSizes; public CameraPreview(Context context, Camera camera) { super(context); mCamera = camera; // Install a SurfaceHolder.Callback so we get notified when the // underlying surface is created and destroyed. mHolder = getHolder(); mHolder.addCallback(this); // deprecated setting, but required on Android versions prior to 3.0 mHolder.setType(SurfaceHolder.SURFACE_TYPE_PUSH_BUFFERS); } public void surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder holder) { // The Surface has been created, now tell the camera where to draw the preview. try { mCamera.setPreviewDisplay(holder); mCamera.setDisplayOrientation(90); mCamera.startPreview(); } catch (IOException e) { Log.d(TAG, "Error setting camera preview: " + e.getMessage()); } } public void surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) { // empty. • OutofMemoryError: bitmap size exceeds VM budget (Android)

    - by Chrispix
    Getting an Exception in the BitmapFactory. Not sure what is the issue. (Well I can guess the issue, but not sure why its happening) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(7906): java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: bitmap size exceeds VM budget ERROR/AndroidRuntime(7906): at android.graphics.BitmapFactory.decodeFile(BitmapFactory.java:295) My code is pretty straight forward. I defined an XML layout w/ a default image. I try to load a bm on the SDCard (if present - it is). If not it shows the default image. Anyway.. Here is code : public class showpicture extends Activity { public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { /** Remove menu/status bar **/ requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_NO_TITLE); final Window win = getWindow(); win.setFlags(WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN,WindowManager.LayoutParams.FLAG_FULLSCREEN); Bitmap bm; super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.showpicture); try { ImageView mImageButton = (ImageView)findViewById(R.id.displayPicture); bm = Bitmap.createScaledBitmap(BitmapFactory.decodeFile("/sdcard/dcim/Camera/20091018203339743.jpg"),100, 100, true); parkImageButton.setImageBitmap(bm); } catch (IllegalArgumentException ex) { Log.d("MYAPP",ex.getMessage()); } catch (IllegalStateException ex) { It fails on the bm=Bitmap.createScaledBitmap any thoughts? I did some research on the forums, and it pointed to this post I just don't know why it is not working. Any help would be great! Thanks, Chris.

  • How to change theme for AlertDialog.

    - by Min Soo Kim
    Hello everyone, I was wondering if someone could help me out. I am trying to create a custom AlertDialog. In order to do this, I added the following line of code in styles.xml @drawable/color_panel_background color_panel_background.9.png is located in drawable folder. This is also available in Android SDK res folder. The following is the main activity. package com.customdialog; import android.app.Activity; import android.app.AlertDialog; import android.app.Dialog; import android.content.DialogInterface; import android.os.Bundle; public class CustomDialog extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); this.setTheme(R.style.CustomAlertDialog); AlertDialog.Builder builder = new AlertDialog.Builder(this); builder.setMessage("HELLO!"); builder .setCancelable(false) .setPositiveButton("Yes", new DialogInterface.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(DialogInterface dialog, int id) { //MyActivity.this.finish(); } }) .setNegativeButton("No", new DialogInterface.OnClickListener() { public void onClick(DialogInterface dialog, int id) { //dialog.cancel(); } }); AlertDialog alertdialog = builder.create(); alertdialog.show(); } } In order to apply the theme to an AlertDialog, I had to set the theme to the current context. However, I just can't seem to get the app to show customized AlertDialog. Can anyone help me out with this, and thank you very much in advance!

  • Implementing a listview inside a sliding drawer with a listview already present

    - by Parker
    I have an app whose main class extends ListActivity: public class GUIPrototype extends ListActivity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); final Cursor c = managedQuery(People.CONTENT_URI, null, null, null, null); String[] from = new String[] {People.NAME}; int[] to = new int[] { R.id.row_entry }; SimpleCursorAdapter adapter = new SimpleCursorAdapter(this,R.layout.drawer,c,from,to); setListAdapter(adapter); getListView().setTextFilterEnabled(true); } } I have a sliding drawer included in my XML, and I'm trying to get a separate listview to appear in the sliding drawer. I'm trying to populate the second listview using an inflater: View inflatedView = View.inflate(this, R.layout.main, null); ListView namesLV = (ListView) inflatedView.findViewById(R.id.content); String[] names2 = new String[] { "CS 345", "New Tag", "Untagged" }; ArrayAdapter<String> bb = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.main, R.id.row_entry, names2); namesLV.setAdapter(bb); This compiles, and runs, but the slidingdrawer is completely blank. My XML follows: <SlidingDrawer android:id="@+id/drawer" android:handle="@+id/handle" android:content="@+id/content" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_gravity="bottom"> <ImageView android:id="@id/handle" android:layout_width="48px" android:layout_height="48px" android:background="@drawable/icon"/> <ListView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:id="@id/content"/> </SlidingDrawer> I feel like I'm missing a vital step. I haven't found any resources on my problem by Googling, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Android "single top" launch mode and onNewIntent method

    - by Rich
    I read in the Android documentation that by setting my Activity's launchMode property to singleTop OR by adding the FLAG_ACTIVITY_SINGLE_TOP flag to my Intent, that calling startActivity(intent) would reuse a single Activity instance and give me the Intent in the onNewIntent callback. I did both of these things, and onNewIntent never fires and onCreate fires every time. The docs also say that this.getIntent() returns the intent that was first passed to the Activity when it was first created. In onCreate I'm calling getIntent and I'm getting a new one every time (I'm creating the intent object in another activity and adding an extra to it...this extra should be the same every time if it was returning me the same intent object). All this leads me to believe that my activity is not acting like a "single top", and I don't understand why. To add some background in case I'm simply missing a required step, here's my Activity declaration in the manifest and the code I'm using to launch the activity. The Activity itself doesn't do anything worth mentioning in regards to this: in AndroidManifest.xml: <activity android:name=".ArtistActivity" android:label="Artist" android:launchMode="singleTop"> </activity> in my calling Activity: Intent i = new Intent(); i.putExtra(EXTRA_KEY_ARTIST, id); i.setClass(this, ArtistActivity.class); i.addFlags(Intent.FLAG_ACTIVITY_SINGLE_TOP); startActivity(i);

  • Android: failed to setContentView when switching to ListActivity

    - by Yang
    This is an follow-up issue on my previous question http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2548304/android-which-view-should-i-use-for-showing-text-and-image I read the article about creating ListView for LinearLayout. However, my following code failed at the setContentView() function when I changed "extends Activity" to "extends ListActivity", any idea why? private TextView mSelection; //private ImageView mImages; static final String[] keywords = new String[]{"China", "Japan", "USA", "Canada"}; /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.contactLayout); mSelection = (TextView)findViewById(R.id.ContactNames); ArrayAdapter adapter = new ArrayAdapter<String>(this, R.layout.contactlayout, R.id.ContactNames,keywords); setListAdapter(adapter); } My Layout is from this article: http://www.curious-creature.org/2009/02/22/android-layout-tricks-1/ <RelativeLayout xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="?android:attr/listPreferredItemHeight" android:padding="6dip"> <ImageView android:id="@+id/icon" android:layout_width="wrap_content" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_marginRight="6dip" android:src="@drawable/icon" /> <LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="0dip" android:layout_weight="1" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <TextView android:id="@+id/ContactNames" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1" android:gravity="center_vertical" android:text="My Application" /> <TextView android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="0dip" android:layout_weight="1" android:singleLine="true" android:ellipsize="marquee" android:text="Simple application that shows how to use RelativeLayout" /> </LinearLayout>

  • Android: How to keep onItemSelected from firing off on a newly instantiated Spinner

    - by Drennen
    I've thought of some less than elegant ways to solve this, but I know I must be missing something. My onItemSelected fires off immediately without any interaction with the user, and this is undesired behavior. I wish for the UI to wait until the user selects something before it does anything. I even tried setting up the listener in the onResume, hoping that would help, but it doesn't. How can I stop this from firing off before the user can touch the control? THANKS public class CMSHome extends Activity { private Spinner spinner; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.main); // Heres my spinner /////////////////////////////////////////// spinner = (Spinner) findViewById(R.id.spinner); ArrayAdapter<CharSequence> adapter = ArrayAdapter.createFromResource( this, R.array.pm_list, android.R.layout.simple_spinner_item); adapter.setDropDownViewResource(android.R.layout.simple_spinner_dropdown_item); spinner.setAdapter(adapter); }; public void onResume() { super.onResume(); spinner.setOnItemSelectedListener(new MyOnItemSelectedListener()); } public class MyOnItemSelectedListener implements OnItemSelectedListener { public void onItemSelected(AdapterView<?> parent, View view, int pos, long id) { Intent i = new Intent(CMSHome.this, ListProjects.class); i.putExtra("bEmpID", parent.getItemAtPosition(pos).toString()); startActivity(i); Toast.makeText(parent.getContext(), "The pm is " + parent.getItemAtPosition(pos).toString(), Toast.LENGTH_LONG).show(); } public void onNothingSelected(AdapterView parent) { // Do nothing. } } }

  • Try to use Window.FEATURU_CUSTOM_TITLE but got Exception:You cannot combine custom titles with other

    - by xueru
    I am trying to use a custom title to include an image button to the title bar. I got a lot of help form this post: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2569753/android-adding-button-to-the-title-of-the-app, but could not get it work for my ListActivity. In a nutshell, following is what I have: I hide the titlebar in the AndroidManifest.xml The specify a relative layout for the custom title (workorder_list_titlebar.xml) My Activity Class looks like the following: public class WorkOrderListActivity extends ListActivity { String[] orders={"WO-12022009", "WO-12302009", "WO-02122010", "02152010"}; @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); requestWindowFeature(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE); this.getWindow().setFeatureInt(Window.FEATURE_CUSTOM_TITLE, R.layout.workorder_list_titlebar); setContentView(R.layout.workorder_list); setListAdapter(new ArrayAdapter(this,R.layout.workorder_list, R.id.label,orders)); } } When I ran the app, I got AndroidRuntimeException: You cannot combine custom titles with other title features. Base on the stack trace, the exception was thrown by com.android.internal.policy.impl.PhoneWindow.requestFeature(PhoneWindow.java:183), that was triggered by setlistAdapter call. Does anyone have the same problem with ListActivity? Also once I manage to get this work, how do I attach listeners to the image button for it to do something? Thanks in advance.

  • Android Share - Facebook SDK - ShareActionProvider

    - by Vlasto Benny Lava
    I am trying to implement sharing a simple string inside my application. Obviously everything other than Facebook works. As far as I know, now I have to use their Facebook SDK to post statuses on a wall. However, if I do implement it using their SDK, is there a way to have it incorporated into the chooser (default or ShareActionProvider) and somehow override it and insert the Facebook SDK's implementation? Or do I have to create a dedicated button? //EDIT package com.example.shareactionproviderdemo; import android.app.Activity; import android.content.Intent; import android.os.Bundle; public class MainActivity extends Activity { @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); setContentView(R.layout.activity_main); Intent sharingIntent = new Intent(Intent.ACTION_SEND); sharingIntent.setType("text/plain"); sharingIntent.putExtra(android.content.Intent.EXTRA_TEXT, "Test message"); startActivity(Intent.createChooser(sharingIntent, "Share using")); } }

  • embedding layout inside each tab? - (each tab has its own activity)

    I have started with the HelloTabwidget example and it works fine. Now what I am trying to do is have a layout inside each tab. here is what the code looks like myApp extends TabActivity { TabHost tabHost; onCreate() { setContentView (R.layout.main); tabHost = getTabHost(); TabHost.tabspec spec = tabHost.newTabSpec(..).setIndicator(...). setContent(new Intent().setClass(...)); tabHost.addTab(spec); : } } myTab1Actvity extends Activity { ListView myLV; EditText myET; onCreate() { setcontentView (TAB1_LAYOUT); myLV = findViewById(..); : myLV.setAdapter(aa); myET.setOnKeyListener(....) registerforContextMenu(myLV) } } when I run here is the stack trace ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): java.lang.NullPointerException ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.widget.TabHost.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(TabHost.java:295) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(ViewGroup.java:661) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(ViewGroup.java:661) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.widget.TabHost.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(TabHost.java:295) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(ViewGroup.java:661) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(ViewGroup.java:661) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewGroup.dispatchWindowFocusChanged(ViewGroup.java:661) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.view.ViewRoot.handleMessage(ViewRoot.java:1819) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.os.Handler.dispatchMessage(Handler.java:99) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.os.Looper.loop(Looper.java:123) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at android.app.ActivityThread.main(ActivityThread.java:4363) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invokeNative(Native Method) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at java.lang.reflect.Method.invoke(Method.java:521) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit$MethodAndArgsCaller.run(ZygoteInit.java:860) ERROR/AndroidRuntime(691): at com.android.internal.os.ZygoteInit.main(ZygoteInit.java:618) Does the code's flow look OK? basically each Tab has its own activity and each tab has its own layout. It appears that something is wrong in the TabHost - but I am unable to pinpoint it. Any suggestions/Qs you hav e will be very helpful.

  • How to add Custom View +Relative Layout into ViewGroup

    Hi I am creating a View where you can draw on the screen, using a view, where I would like to have a button/titlebar drawn at the top of the screen. Here is my current code public class FingerPaint extends Activity implements ColorPickerDialog.OnColorChangedListener { private Paint mPaint; private MyView mView; @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); LinearLayout main = new LinearLayout(this); mView = new MyView(this); main.addView(this.getLayoutInflater().inflate( R.layout.topbar, null )); main.addView(mView); main.bringChildToFront(mView); setContentView(main); // mView.addView(this.getLayoutInflater().inflate( R.layout.topbar, null )); mPaint = new Paint(); mPaint.setAntiAlias(true); mPaint.setDither(true); mPaint.setColor(0xFFFF0000); mPaint.setStyle(Paint.Style.STROKE); mPaint.setStrokeJoin(Paint.Join.ROUND); mPaint.setStrokeCap(Paint.Cap.ROUND); mPaint.setStrokeWidth(12); mBitmaps=new Bitmap[100]; location=0; actualSize=0; mEmboss = new EmbossMaskFilter(new float[] { 1, 1, 1 }, 0.4f, 6, 3.5f); mBlur = new BlurMaskFilter(8, BlurMaskFilter.Blur.NORMAL); setContentView(main); } public class MyView extends View{ ......... } But when run, only the topbar.xml view is shown. I want the status bar from topbar and the rest down to be from the myView (for drawing on the screen like paint). Am I using ViewGroup properly?

  • How do I save an Android application's state?

    - by Bernard
    I've been playing around with the Android SDK, and I am a little unclear on saving an applications state. So given this minor re-tooling of the 'Hello, Android' example: package com.android.hello; import android.app.Activity; import android.os.Bundle; import android.widget.TextView; public class HelloAndroid extends Activity { /** Called when the activity is first created. */ @Override public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); mTextView = new TextView(this); if (savedInstanceState == null) { mTextView.setText("Welcome to HelloAndroid!"); } else { mTextView.setText("Welcome back."); } setContentView(mTextView); } private TextView mTextView = null; } I thought that might be all one needed to do for the simplest case, but it always gives me the first message, no matter how I navigate away from the app. I'm sure it's probably something simple like overriding onPause or something like that, but I've been poking away in the docs for 30 minutes or so and haven't found anything obvious, so would appreciate any help. Cue me looking a fool in three, two, one... Thanks.

  • OrientationEventListener not working properly

    - by nixau
    Hi all, I need to handle orientation changes in my Android application. For this purpose I decided to use OrientationEventListener convenience class. But his callback method is given somewhat strange behavior. My application starts in the portrait mode and then eventually switches to the lanscape one. I have some custom code executing in the callback onOrientationChanged method that provides some additional UI handling logic - it has a few calls to findViewById. What is strange is that when switching back from landscape to portrait mode onOrientationChanged callback is called twice, and what's even worse - the second call is dealing with bad Context - findViewById method starts returning null. These calls are made right from the MainThread @Override protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); listener = new OrientationListener(); } @Override protected void onResume() { super.onResume(); // enabling listening listener.enable(); } @Override protected void onPause() { super.onPause(); // disabling listening listener.disable(); } I've replicated the same behavior with a dummy Activity without any logic except for one that deals with orientation hadling. I initiate orientation switch from the Android 2.2 emulator by pressing Ctrl+F11 What could be wrong? Upd: Inner class that implements OrientationEventListener private class OrientationListener extends OrientationEventListener { public OrientationL() { super(getBaseContext()); } @Override public void onOrientationChanged(int orientation) { toString(); } } }

  • Why is my Android app camera preview running out of memory on my AVD?

    - by Bryan
    I have yet to try this on an actual device, but expect similar results. Anyway, long story short, whenever I run my app on the emulator, it crashes due to an out of memory exception. My code really is essentially the same as the camera preview API demo from google, which runs perfectly fine. The only file in the app (that I created/use) is as below- package berbst.musicReader; import java.io.IOException; import android.app.Activity; import android.content.Context; import android.hardware.Camera; import android.os.Bundle; import android.view.SurfaceHolder; import android.view.SurfaceView; /********************************* * Music Reader v.0001 * Still VERY under construction. * @author Bryan * *********************************/ public class MusicReader extends Activity { private MainScreen main; @Override //Begin activity public void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) { super.onCreate(savedInstanceState); main = new MainScreen(this); setContentView(main); } class MainScreen extends SurfaceView implements SurfaceHolder.Callback { SurfaceHolder sHolder; Camera cam; MainScreen(Context context) { super(context); //Set up SurfaceHolder sHolder = getHolder(); sHolder.addCallback(this); sHolder.setType(SurfaceHolder.SURFACE_TYPE_PUSH_BUFFERS); } public void surfaceCreated(SurfaceHolder holder) { // Open the camera and start viewing cam = Camera.open(); try { cam.setPreviewDisplay(holder); } catch (IOException exception) { cam.release(); cam = null; } } public void surfaceDestroyed(SurfaceHolder holder) { // Kill all our crap with the surface cam.stopPreview(); cam.release(); cam = null; } public void surfaceChanged(SurfaceHolder holder, int format, int w, int h) { // Modify parameters to match size.
