• Server OS: put it on a separate drive? Yes, no, or depends on the situation?

  Hi, I would like opinions, or facts, both preferably, on whether it's ok to install a server's OS on the RAID array or not. I would predict installation on separate drives is the best but I'm interested in the performance. The server in question will have 8 cores (2.4GHz ea.), 24GB RAM, and ~16TB of usable space of server-class drives in RAID10. There is also a subsytem of an ~equivalent size for backup. I will be running CPU/memory intesive applications on this server in addition to it being file storage for my work (research lab). IF I install the OS (haven't decided which one, probably Ubuntu or Fedora or some other good linux distro) on separate drives will there be any performance problems if they aren't configured in RAID10? IF it is better to have the OS on separate drives should I go for 150GB velociraptors in RAID1 or smallish SSD drives in RAID1? Money is unfortunately a factor as I think I'm close to maxing my budget as it is. Thanks!

The code below is the movement function of my Dot class, which controls the ball. The ball seems to ignore yvel and moves with xvel to the bottom right. • What could cause a file system to spontaneously unmount or become invalid for a short time?

  We've got DB2 LUW running on a RHEL box. We had a crash of DB2 and IBM came back and said that a file that DB2 was trying to access (through open64()) unmounted or became invalid. We have done nothing but restart the database and things seem to be running fine. Also, the file in question looks perfectly normal now: $ cd /db/log/TEAMS/tmsinst/NODE0000/TEAMS/T0000000/ $ ls -l total 557604 -rw------- 1 tmsinst tmsinst 570425344 Jan 14 10:24 C0000000.CAT $ file C0000000.CAT C0000000.CAT: data $ lsattr C0000000.CAT ------------- C0000000.CAT $ ls -l total 557604 -rw------- 1 tmsinst tmsinst 570425344 Jan 14 10:24 C0000000.CAT With those facts in hand (please correct me if I am mis-interpreting the data at hand) what could cause a file system to 'spontaneously unmount or become invalid for a short time'? What should my next step be? This is on Dell hardware and we ran their diagnostic tools against the hardware and it came back clean.

• Why not XHTML5?

  So, HTML5 is the Big Step Forward, I'm told. The last step forward we took that I'm aware of was the introduction of XHTML. The advantages were obvious: simplicity, strictness, the ability to use standard XML parsers and generators to work with web pages, and so on. How strange and frustrating, then, that HTML5 rolls all that back: once again we're working with a non-standard syntax; once again, we have to deal with historical baggage and parsing complexity; once again we can't use our standard XML libraries, parsers, generators, or transformers; and all the advantages introduced by XML (extensibility, namespaces, standardization, and so on), that the W3C spent a decade pushing for good reasons, are lost. Fine, we have XHTML5, but it seems like it has not gained popularity like the HTML5 encoding has. See this SO question, for example. Even the HTML5 specification says that HTML5, not XHTML5, "is the format suggested for most authors." Do I have my facts wrong? Otherwise, why am I the only one that feels this way? Why are people choosing HTML5 over XHTML5?

• Data Access Objects old fashioned? [on hold]

  A couple of weeks ago I delivered some work for a university project. After a code review with some teachers I got some snarky remarks about the fact that I was (still) using Data Access Objects. The teacher in question who said this mentions the use of DAO's in his classes and always says something along the lines of "Back then we always used DAO's". He's a big fan of Object Relational Mapping, which I also think is a great tool. When I was talking about this with some of my fellow students, they also mentioned that they prefer the use of ORM, which I can understand. It did make me wonder though, is using DAO's really so old fashioned? I know that at my work DAO's are still being used, but this is due to the fact that some of the code is rather old and therefor can't be coupled with ORM. We also do use ORM at my work. Trying to find some more information on Google or Stack Exchange sites didn't really enlighten me. Should I step away from the use of DAO's and only start implementing ORM? I just feel that ORM's can be a bit overkill for some simple projects. I'd love to hear your opinions (or facts) about this.

• What is the easiest way to apply database functionality into my daily life?

  let me try to explain it by listing some of the things I want to do: Submit random thoughts, notes, facts, and to-do tasks of any sort and at any time. Tag each of these submissions freely. Manage these tags centrally. Associate meta-data with submissions and tags. Search, filter, and sort submissions. I want lots of power here. Display views of submissions (including within searches) in a hierarchy. Create said hierarchies easily out by ordering relevant tags. I'm thinking towards some kind of desktop program that allows me to quickly do all of these things. A web service could also work, too, but it will need offline capabilities. I don't want to have to pay for this, if that's possible. Also, as I know regex and SQL, I wouldn't mind solutions involving the use of either.

• Would having an undergraduate certificate in Computer Science help me get employed as a computer programmer? [on hold]

  I am wondering how would employers perceive the Universtiy Certificate in Computing and Information Systems offered by Athabasca University (a distance education institution... The university is legit and accredited by the Government of Alberta, Canada). I already have a BSc in Statistics from University of Alberta (a classic brick and mortar public university in Alberta, Canada)...so I can state in my resume that I have a "university degree"..... Luckily, I was able to secure a very good employment in my field after the graduation from the U of A. The main reason why I am interested in taking the certificate program through Athabasca is because knowing how to program can increase the chance for promotion in my current job. I also believe that if something turns out bad in my current job and if I ever need to look for a new place to work, having the certificate in computer science will help me get employed as a computer programmer (i.e. my choice for the new job wouldn't be restricted to the field of Statistics). Athabasca University is claiming that the certificate program is meant to be equivalent to the undergraduate minor in computing science. I carefully looked at the certificate's curriculum and as far as I am concerned, the certificate program does have the same level of rigour as the undergraduate minor in Computer Science programs offered by other Canadian universities. I am also confident that the certificate program will get me to pick up enough skills/background to start a career as a computer programmer. The reasons why I am not 100% sure on getting the certificate is worth the tuition are: Athabasca University is a distance education institution (accredited by government but still) The credential that I will receive is "university certificate", not a "undergraduate degree" Do you think it's a good idea for me to pursue the certificate, given the two facts above? again, I already have my Bachelor's degree - although it is not in CS Thanks,

  Most people use their SSD as their primary system installation disk with Windows 7. W7 already has a lot of optimizations for SSDs, both in terms of performance and lifetime. Minimizing writes increases the lifetime of SSDs, so post each suggestion as an answer and let others vote on them. Update: I'm not sure anymore that minimizing writes is a good thing [tm], hard facts that SSDs will degrade within a noticeable time are missing and it seems this it can create a bit FUD about the functionality of the SSD. In other words: I question the usefulness of my wiki question.

• Most secure way to access my home Linux server while I am on the road? Specialized solution wanted

  I think many people may be in my situation. I travel on business with a laptop. And I need secure access to files from the office (which in my case is my home). The short version of my question: How can I make SSH/SFTP really secure when only one person needs to connect to the server from one laptop? In this situation, what special steps would make it almost impossible for anyone else to get online access to the server? A lot more details: I use Ubuntu Linux on both my laptop (KDE) and my home/office server. Connectivity is not a problem. I can tether to my phone's connection if needed. I need access to a large number of files (around 300 GB). I don't need all of them at once, but I don't know in advance which files I might need. These files contain confidential client info and personal info such as credit card numbers, so they must be secure. Given this, I don't want store all these files on Dropbox or Amazon AWS, or similar. I couldn't justify that cost anyway (Dropbox don't even publish prices for plans above 100 GB, and security is a concern). However, I am willing to spend some money on a proper solution. A VPN service, for example, might be part of the solution? Or other commercial services? I've heard about PogoPlug, but I don't know if there is a similar service that might address my security concerns? I could copy all my files to my laptop because it has the space. But then I have to sync between my home computer and my laptop and I found in the past that I'm not very good about doing this. And if my laptop is lost or stolen, my data would be on it. The laptop drive is an SSD and encryption solutions for SSD drives are not good. Therefore, it seems best to keep all my data on my Linux file server (which is safe at home). Is that a reasonable conclusion, or is anything connected to the Internet such a risk that I should just copy the data to the laptop (and maybe replace the SSD with an HDD, which reduces battery life and performance)? I view the risks of losing a laptop to be higher. I am not an obvious hacking target online. My home broadband is cable Internet, and it seems very reliable. So I want to know the best (reasonable) way to securely access my data (from my laptop) while on the road. I only need to access it from this one computer, although I may connect from either my phone's 3G/4G or via WiFi or some client's broadband, etc. So I won't know in advance which IP address I'll have. I am leaning toward a solution based on SSH and SFTP (or similar). SSH/SFTP would provided about all the functionality I anticipate needing. I would like to use SFTP and Dolphin to browse and download files. I'll use SSH and the terminal for anything else. My Linux file server is set up with OpenSSH. I think I have SSH relatively secured. I'm using Denyhosts too. But I want to go several steps further. I want to get the chances that anyone can get into my server as close to zero as possible while still allowing me to get access from the road. I'm not a sysadmin or programmer or real "superuser". I have to spend most of my time doing other things. I've heard about "port knocking" but I have never used it and I don't know how to implement it (although I'm willing to learn).   before posting I was digging whole site but didn't find help for my problem, so I hope someone will help... Facts: 30 Gb mysql database on remote server (about 20.000.000 rows) data are once weekly updated in local network (mysql) I need to transfer/replace local updated database with remote connection is about 2mb (real mb, not mbps) up/down Point is that I can't have 'down time' of remote mysql server. Until now I Tried: navicat data sync - Ok, but take about 3 days to finish dbForge - ok but need 5 days to finish mysql dump transfer to remote server and execution - about day, but a lot of downtime rsync folder with database /mysql/lib/MY_DATABASE - 4 hours, but after that I need to execute always 'repir on remote server' which takes about 2 hours, and a lot of down time mysql dump piped from cl to directly goto server - still now satisfied many problems I could give you more things that I tried... mysql replication - slow Anyase, what is best,best way to: refresh remote mysql on weekly level and in same time to have 0 sec down time nor huge server load If you have any idea please share

• Crackling sound from right laptop speaker

  This problem lasts for several months already (first on Ubuntu 13.10, not on 12.04. I get very loud cracking/popping sound from my right Asus K56C's speaker, I searched everything but could not get rid of it. Several facts: There is no problem on Windows 8. It has nothing to do with applications running because it appears even before login screen of Ubuntu. Also same problem if I boot from Live USB. Muting sound will remove noise, but lowering volume has no effect. Inserting any headphones, removes the noise. If I disconnect power cable while there is noise, noise will always disappear, but only if there is no music playing. If I start playing music, noise again appear even with power cable disconnected. Sometimes that noise disappears for 1-4 weeks, and then again appears for no reason and lasts from several days to weeks. That noise is always the same, and I tried adding tsched=0 to /etc/pulse/default.pa. Also tried this PositionReporting fix, with no effect. I also tried disconnecting all the cables and removing all electronic devices around laptop, but it has no effect. I also tried removing Pulse Audio, didn't change anything. Would be great if someone has some real solution for this problem.

  Hi there, I am running a SSAS cube that stores facts of HTTP requests. The is a column "Time Taken" that stores the milliseconds a particular HTTP request took. Like... RequestID Time Taken -------------------------- 1 0 2 10 3 20 4 20 5 2000 I want to provide a report through Excel that shows the distribution of those timings by percentage of requests. A statement like "90% of all requests took less than 20millisecond". Analysis: 100% <2000 80% <20 60% <20 40% <10 20% <=0 I am pretty much lost what would be the right approach to design aggregations, calculations etc. to offer this analysis through Excel. Any ideas?   I do not find actual difference between these two J2EE server. From my past experience, I found out following: WL is evolving more faster than WAS. WL is more user friendly than WAS. To simply deploy a application in WAS, we need to go in deep and its difficult to find if u are new to it. I found out that WAS is slower in some machine than WL. I found out that Classloading is easier to understand and effective in WL than WAS Above all are my experiences but not actual facts. I want to know more in this respect. Please clear my doubts. If possible please provide each J2EE server's pros and cons. -Abhishek

  The facts: When a file is moved, there's two possibilities: The source and destination file are on the same partition and only the file system index is updated The source and destination are on two different file system and the file need to be moved byte per byte. (aka copy on move) The question: How can I determine if a file will be either logically or physically moved ? I'm transferring large files (700+ megs) and would adopt a different behaviors for each situation. Edit: I've already coded a moving file dialog with a worker thread that perform the blocking io call to copy the file a meg at a time. It provide information to the user like rough estimate of the remaining time and transfer rate. The problem is: how do I know if the file can be moved logically before trying to move it physically ?

• Should we seal Singletons? Should we try to inherit from Singletons in the first place?

  Should a Singleton class be allowed to have children? Should we seal it? What are the pro's and con's? For being able to inherit from a Singleton class, we would have to make the constructor protected instead of private. Now, that will be fine in c#, but the protected word in java gives both child-classes and package-classes access to the constructor. Which means not only classes that inherit from our Singleton can access the constructor but other classes in the same package can do it. I'm a bit confused about all this facts. Maybe I am making a big fuss about nothing to worry about too much? Until now, I never had any necessity of trying to inherit from a Singleton, so maybe this is just an academic question! Thanks

  I have three types of facts: album(code, artist, title, date). songs(code, songlist). musicians(code, list). Example: album(123, 'Rolling Stones', 'Beggars Banquet', 1968). songs(123, ['Sympathy for the Devil', 'Street Fighting Man']). musicians(123, [[vocals, 'Mick Jagger'], [guitar, 'Keith Richards', 'Brian Jones']]. I need to create these 4 rules: together(X,Y) This succeeds if X and Y have played on the same album. artistchain(X,Y) This succeeds if a chain of albums exists from X to Y; two musicians are linked in the chain by 'together'. role(X,Y) This succeeds if X had role Y (e.g. guitar) ever. song(X,Y) This succeeds if artist X recorded song Y. Any help?

• How can HTML5 "replace" Flash?

  A topic of debate that's seen a resurgence since the unveiling of the iPad is the issue of Flash versus HTML5. There are those that suggest that HTML5 will one day supplant/replace Adobe Flash. I do not develop software that runs in a browser, so my (limited) understanding is: HTML is a pure-text markup language that is delivered over HTTP to a client browser. The client browser interprets the markup and renders (with varying degrees of success) the page according to an standard specification. Adobe Flash is a propriety framework for working with audio, video, sound and raster/vector graphics. It requires special authoring tools (a compiler perhaps?) and a custom player that's available as a plug-in to most common browsers. Could someone please explain (to this C/C++ developer) how it is possible from a technical/coding point-of-view that a text-based markup language (HTML5) could be considered a replacement to a multimedia framework (Flash)? Please no opinionated arguments - just technical facts.

  Hi! What I am trying to achieves looks very simple, yet I cannot make it work. My facts are orders which have a date and I have a typical time dimension with the 'Month" and 'Year' levels. I would like to get an output which lists the number of orders for the last 6 months and the total, like this: Oct 2009 20 Nov 2009 30 Dec 2009 25 Jan 2009 15 Feb 2010 45 Mar 2010 5 Total 140 I can create the set with the members Oct 2009 until Mar 2010 and I manage to get this part of my desired output: Oct 2009 20 Nov 2009 30 Dec 2009 25 Jan 2009 15 Feb 2010 45 Mar 2010 5 Just I fail to get the total line.

• mysql and .net: when using tableadapters I'm getting MySqlException "insert command denied for user"

  Hi! I am using mysql as db for my asp.net application. Here are the facts: I am using connection string from web.config which has both username and password. I can do SELECT with tableadapter. When I am trying to do INSERT with tableadapter, I am getting "mysqlexception insert command denied for user" error When I try to do INSERT programatically, i.e. using connection, command object, etc. everything is fine. In this case, I'm reading connection string from web.config, too. This can be only applied to GoDaddy hosting, but on local machine I don't have this kind of problems. Can anyone suggest what can I do to make it work on GoDaddy hosting? Regards, D
