• Back in Town and Ready for New Beginnings

  Originally posted on: http://geekswithblogs.net/MOSSLover/archive/2013/11/03/back-in-town-and-ready-for-new-beginnings.aspxI just took a super long trip that lasted from September 27th until today.  I flew into St. Louis and then rented a car and drove over 12,000 miles.  I just dropped the rental off last night.  I went to a ton of states, did a lot of really cool things, saw a lot of really cool people, and bought a ton of beer.  I made some decisions, but this post isn't really about my decisions.  It's more about the question that everyone has been asking, "Where am I going to work?".So here's the answer...BlueMetal Architects as a Senior SharePoint Engineer.  Here is their website: http://www.bluemetal.com/.  I basically start tomorrow.  I didn't want to post anything super early, because I didn't want to jinx things.  I am really excited.  Now that I'm back I'm hoping that things will start to turn around for me.  I look forward to the future.

Here's just some of what it takes to keep the conference going, network style: 100 Oracle network, voice, and desktop engineers; security, risk management, and other IT experts, who come in from 17 countries  1000+ network switches 300+ miles of copper and fiber 485 wireless access points 2,500 wired laptops 300 VoIP phones And just where are all these networks and devices deployed? • Difference between Factory Method and Abstract Factory design patterns using C#.Net

  First of all I'll just put both these patterns in context and describe their intent as in the GOF book: Factory Method: Define an interface for creating an object, but let subclasses decide which class to instantiate. Factory Method lets a class defer instantiation to subclasses.   Abstract Factory: Provide an interface for creating families of related or dependent objects without specifying their concrete classes.   Points to note:   Abstract factory pattern adds a layer of abstraction to the factory method pattern. The type of factory is not known to the client at compile time, this information is passed to the client at runtime (How it is passed is again dependent on the system, you may store this information in configuration files and the client can read it on execution). While implementing Abstract factory pattern, the factory classes can have multiple factory methods.   Hello, I am currently studying for an exam I'll have on x86 assembly. I didn't have much luck googling for ":", too common of a punctuation mark :/ IDIV - Signed Integer Division Usage: IDIV src Modifies flags: (AF,CF,OF,PF,SF,ZF undefined) Signed binary division of accumulator by source. If source is a byte value, AX is divided by "src" and the quotient is stored in AL and the remainder in AH. If source is a word value, DX:AX is divided by "src", and the quotient is stored in AL and the remainder in DX. Taken from "Intel Opcodes and Mnemonics" What does DX:AX mean?   first I need to say that I´m noob with WPF and C#. Application: Create Mandelbrot Image (GUI) My disptacher works perfektly this this case: private void progressBarRefresh(){ while ((con.Progress) < 99) { progressBar1.Dispatcher.Invoke(DispatcherPriority.Send, new Action(delegate { progressBar1.Value = con.Progress; } )); } } I get the Message (Title) when tring to do this with the below code: bmp = BitmapSource.Create(width, height, 96, 96, pf, null, rawImage, stride); this.Dispatcher.Invoke(DispatcherPriority.Send, new Action(delegate { img.Source = bmp; ViewBox.Child = img; //vllt am schluss } )); I will try to explain how my program works. I created a new Thread (because GUI dont response) for the calculation of the pixels and the colors. In this Thread(Mehtod) I´m using the Dispatcher to Refresh my Image in the ViewBox after the calculations are ready. When I´m dont put the calculation in a seperate Thread then I can refresh or build my Image.

  Hello! I'm stuck on a problem and, after what seems like days of searching for a solution, I'm reaching out to Stack Overflow for help. I'm trying to replace a standard dropdown form element with a Textbox and a Div containing an unordered list. I'd prefer to have the solution be based on jQuery, but am open to alternatives. I've found a couple jQuery plugins that -almost- do what I need, but are far enough from being a real solution that I need to keep looking. Here's an image of what I'm going for: I'd like the dropdown to look as pictured, and when an element is selected (with mouse or keyboard), have just the first line handed back into the textbox (and not be editable). I'd also like to populate a hidden input field with a value that will be used on Submit. I'm pulling my hair out over this one. Any help and guidance will be most appreciated! Thanks! ~PF

• How can I clip strings in Java2D and add ... in the end?

  I'm trying to print Invoices in a Java Swing applications. I do that by extending Printable and implement the method public int print(Graphics g, PageFormat pf, int page). I would like to draw strings in columns, and when the string is to long I want to clip it and let it end with "...". How can I measure the string and clip it at the right position? Some of my code: Font headline = new Font("Times New Roman", Font.BOLD, 14); g2d.setFont(headline); FontMetrics metrics = g2d.getFontMetrics(headline); g2d.drawString(myString, 0, 20); I.e How can I limit myString to be max 120px? I could use metrics.stringWidth(myString), but I don't get the position where I have to clip the string. Expected results could be: A longer string that exc... A shorter string. • pointer to const member function typedef

  I know it's possible to separate to create a pointer to member function like this struct K { void func() {} }; typedef void FuncType(); typedef FuncType K::* MemFuncType; MemFuncType pF = &K::func; Is there similar way to construct a pointer to a const function? I've tried adding const in various places with no success. I've played around with gcc some and if you do template deduction on something like template <typename Sig, typename Klass> void deduce(Sig Klass::*); It will show Sig with as a function signature with const just tacked on the end. If to do this in code it will complain that you can't have qualifiers on a function type. Seems like it should be possible somehow because the deduction works.

  Hi, i was just asked today, but i couldn't answer precisely so that's why i'm asking here :-) There is any book about Firewall design and implementations (Unix environment and C)? For sure, i could recommend TCP/IP books, and what i did, but there is some design decisions, that are not related with TCP/IP. For sure, i said about the netfilter/iptables (RTFSC) but as well we cannot assume that the netfilter/iptables is the best approach since we don't have too many baselines (ok, we could compare it with PF, but again, read source code to understand design decisions is not always the best way). So if anybody knows a book about this theme, please shoot it!

• Objective c string formatter for distances

  I have a distance as a float and I'm looking for a way to format it nicely for human readers. Ideally, I'd like it to change from m to km as it gets bigger, and to round the number nicely. Converting to miles would be a bonus. I'm sure many people have had a need for one of these and I'm hoping that there's some code floating around somewhere. Here's how I'd like the formats: 0-100m: 47m (as a whole number) 100-1000m: 325m or 320m (round to the nearest 5 or 10 meters) 1000-10000m: 1.2km (round to nearest with one decimal place) 10000m +: 21km If there's no code available, how can I write my own formatter? • Bitmapdata heavy usage - memory disaster (spark/FB4)

  I've got a flex component which works pretty well but unfortunately turns into a disaster once used in a datagroup item renderer of about 40-50 items. Essentially it uses bitmapdata to take screenshot of a fully-rendered webpage in mx:HTML (this version of webkit rocks btw, miles better than flex 3). The code is pretty self-explanatory I think. http://noben.org/show/PageGrabber.mxml I've optimized it all I could, browsed, search for answers and already trimmed it down a lot, I'm desparate to reduce the memory usage (about 600mb after 100 draw) The Garbage collector has little effect. • Java framework "suggestion" for persisting the results from an Oracle 9i stored procedure using Apac

  Hello, I am developing a Java servlet which calls an Oracle stored procedure. The stored procedure is likely to "grow" over time, and I have concerns the amount of time taken to "display the results on a web page". While I am at the implementation stage, I would like some suggestions of a Persistence framework which will work on Apache Tomcat 5.5? I see two approaches to persisting the database results. A scheduled database query every N minutes, or something which utilises triggers. Hibernate seems like the obvious answer, but I have never called stored procedures from Hibernate (HQL and Criteria).   It seems like optimization is a lost art these days. Wasn't there a time when all programmers squeezed every ounce of efficiency from their code? Often doing so while walking 5 miles in the snow? In the spirit of bringing back a lost art, what are some tips that you know of for simple (or perhaps complex) changes to optimize C#/.NET code? Since it's such a broad thing that depends on what one is trying to accomplish it'd help to provide context with your tip. For instance: When concatenating many strings together use StringBuilder instead. If you're only concatenating a handful of strings it's ok to use the + operator. Use string.Compare to compare 2 strings instead of doing something like string1.ToLower() == string2.ToLower()

  Using the MKReverseGeocoder or GoogleAPI or MapKit... Is there a simple way to turn a latitude/longitude into "nearest major cross-streets"? A user might not have any idea where "12345 Pineapple" is located... so I want to show something like "Pineapple and Main"... or (larger, major roads) like "US-140 and Hwy 76". I don't really care what "major" is defined as... perhaps any road with higher speed limits... or more than 3 lanes... etc. I don't really care what "close by" is defines as... perhaps within 0-10 miles... or just "closest found".

• How many layers are between my program and the hardware?

  I somehow have the feeling that modern systems, including runtime libraries, this exception handler and that built-in debugger build up more and more layers between my (C++) programs and the CPU/rest of the hardware. I'm thinking of something like this: 1 + 2 OS top layer Runtime library/helper/error handler a hell lot of DLL modules OS kernel layer Do you really want to run 1 + 2?-Windows popup (don't take this serious) OS kernel layer Hardware abstraction Hardware Go through at least 100 miles of circuits Eventually arrive at the CPU ADD 1, 2 Go all the way back to my program Nearly all technical things are simply wrong and in some random order, but you get my point right? How much longer/shorter is this chain when I run a C++ program that calculates 1 + 2 at runtime on Windows? How about when I do this in an interpreter? (Python|Ruby|PHP) Is this chain really as dramatic in reality? Does Windows really try "not to stand in the way"? e.g.: Direct connection my binary < hardware?
