  • Is it wrong to use a boolean parameter to determine behavior?

    - by Ray
I have seen a practice from time to time that "feels" wrong, but I can't quite articulate what is wrong about it. Or maybe it's just my prejudice. Here goes: A developer defines a method with a boolean as one of its parameters, and that method calls another, and so on, and eventually that boolean is used, solely to determine whether or not to take a certain action. This might be used, for example, to allow the action only if the user has certain rights, or perhaps if we are (or aren't) in test mode or batch mode or live mode, or perhaps only when the system is in a certain state. Well there is always another way to do it, whether by querying when it is time to take the action (rather than passing the parameter), or by having multiple versions of the method, or multiple implementations of the class, etc. My question isn't so much how to improve this, but rather whether or not it really is wrong (as I suspect), and if it is, what is wrong about it.

  • Stairway to T-SQL DML Level 4: The Mathematics of SQL: Part 1

A relational database contains tables that relate to each other by key values. When querying data from these related tables you may choose to select data from a single table or many tables. If you select data from many tables, you normally join those tables together using specified join criteria. The concepts of selecting data from tables and joining tables together is all about managing and manipulating sets of data. In Level 4 of this Stairway we will explore the concepts of set theory and mathematical operators to join, merge, and return data from multiple SQL Server tables. Get Smart with SQL Backup Pro Powerful centralised management, encryption and more.SQL Backup Pro was the smartest kid at school Discover why.

  • when should a database table be broken into multiple tables with relations?

    - by GSto
I have an application that needs to store client data, and part of that is some data about their employer as well. Assuming that a client can only have one employer, and that the chance of people having identical employer data is slim to none, which schema would make more sense to use? Schema 1 Client Table: ------------------- id int name varchar(255), email varchar(255), address varchar(255), city varchar(255), state char(2), zip varchar(16), employer_name varchar(255), employer_phone varchar(255), employer_address varchar(255), employer_city varchar(255), employer_state char(2), employer_zip varchar(16) **Schema 2** Client Table ------------------ id int name varchar(255), email varchar(255), address varchar(255), city varchar(255), state char(2), zip varchar(16), Employer Table --------------------- id int name varchar(255), phone varchar(255), address varchar(255), city varchar(255), state char(2), zip varchar(16) patient_id int Part of me thinks that since are clearly two different 'objects' in the real world, seperating them out into two different tables makes sense. However, since a client will always have an employer, I'm also not seeing any real benefits to seperating them out, and it would make querying data about clients more complex. Is there any benefit / reason for creating two tables in a situation like this one instead of one?

  • The device is not ready

    - by hmloo
    When you retrieve the drive info using the DriveInfo class, if you don't use the IsReady property to test whether a drive is ready, it will throw error as "The device is not ready". so you must use IsReady property to determines if the drive is ready to be queried, written to, or read from. The following code example demonstrates querying information for all drives on current system. using System; using System.IO; class Test { public static void Main() { DriveInfo[] allDrives = DriveInfo.GetDrives(); foreach (DriveInfo d in allDrives) { Console.WriteLine("Drive {0}", d.Name); Console.WriteLine(" File type: {0}", d.DriveType); if (d.IsReady == true) { Console.WriteLine(" Volume label: {0}", d.VolumeLabel); Console.WriteLine(" File system: {0}", d.DriveFormat); Console.WriteLine( " Available space to current user:{0, 15} bytes", d.AvailableFreeSpace); Console.WriteLine( " Total available space: {0, 15} bytes", d.TotalFreeSpace); Console.WriteLine( " Total size of drive: {0, 15} bytes ", d.TotalSize); } } } }

  • Is it better to use a Database or a data structure for network stack?

    - by poly
I've built a multi threaded messaging application in C and I'm currently using a MySQL Memory table to save the session ID, but I'm not sure whether this was a good decision or not. It works like this, the application sends a message and saves the source session ID in the MySQL table. When the application gets the success response it will remove the session's ID from the MySQL table, or if it received an error response then it will keep the ID to be retried later. I've built it this way so that I don't need to care about building a data structure by myself, and the Database provides flexibility when it comes to querying it. Do you think this is appropriate or do I need to use something else? Please note that the application is expecting to handle a large number of transactions/sec.

  • Show SQL query results in Sharepoint

    - by JoeOD
Hi All I support Rational clearquest for my company and have been asked to show some of the data in Sharepoint. I can query the data in Clearquest no problem (Using Toad) but have no idea about how to go displaying it in Sharepoint. The data I'm querying contains dates and ideally I'd like to be able display it in a sharepoint calendar but list format would do for the moment. Can anybody offer advice on even where to start? Thanks, Joe

  • Google Base Query Problems

    - by Craig
I am querying Google Base using the .NET library pretty much as described on this page. http://code.google.com/apis/base/docs/2.0/developers_guide_dotnet.html When I run the query a GBaseFeed is returned and it will usually have the TotalRecords property set to something like 35, but in the Entries collection it will often have no items or very few items. Other times the query returns all 35 items as expected in the Entries. Has anyone seen this behaviour or have any idea what could cause it?

  • .Net CMS with API to expose content

    - by Peter
I am looking for a .Net CMS that allows me to expose pages/articles that are created in the CMS to other applications without querying the CMS database. Preferably this would be done through an API and by exposing them through a custom secured webservice. I know Sitefinity can do this. Do you know if Umbraco DotNetNuke can do this? If yes, a link to some documentation of the API is appreciated!

  • How does one calculate CPU utilization programmatically ?

    - by Scott Davies
Hi, I have a benchmarking program that calculates the time (in milliseconds and ticks), for a persistance to Entity Framework 4.0. Is there a way to calculate CPU load ? I am guessing that I would need to query Windows to find out my CPU frequency, how many cores, etc. Does this sound right ? If so, what part of the .NET framework relates to querying the system ? I am guessing System.Diagnostics ? Thanks, Scott

  • How to add entity object to adequate entity set with object context in EF?

    - by Levelbit
I have a problem when I add an entity object with ObjectContext.AddObject method because I can't retrieve that object with LINQ querying my ObjectContext.Person entities. I know that this new added object is stored somewhere, because it is used to update database after SaveChanges method. That's bothers me because I want to update my datagrid DataContext without saving changes unless I really want to do it. It doesn't help if I add the same object to DataContext list myself directly.

  • Database Schema Managing Framework/Library

    - by Karol Kolenda
I'm looking for any database framework/library for .net which will act as a unified layer between an application and databases. Please note that I'm not interested in querying/updating data (there is plenty of DALs for that) but rather a framework which allows me to manage table schemas and indexes in a managed fashion (without using database specific SQL). I'm particularly interested in a library which supports Oracle, SQL Server and PostreSQL.

  • What are the causes and solutions to a CS0122 error when sending onto an MSMQ queue from C#?

    - by Erick
Having created a System.Messaging.MessageQueue using the MessageQueue(string queuePath) constructor, attempting to use MessageQueue.Send(obj) results in a 'Unable to generate a temporary class (result=1)' exception with the additional text: 'error CS0122: 'System.__ComObject' is inaccessible due to its protection level'. The queue itself has full control given to EVERYONE. When querying the MessageQueue object for it's read write permissions, it returns SendAndReceive. What causes this error and how do you resolve it?

  • URL Slugs: Redirects or 404s?

    - by anonymous coward
Some sites, like here at SO, allow 'bogus' slugs in the URL. Before implementing URL slugs on my site, I have a question of 'best practices'... Given a structure like example.com/123/article-slug-here/, if my site allows bogus slugs by querying on the ID - Should I ... just do a redirect to the appropriate/canonical URL (verifying the slug, and redirecting in case of a mismatch)? -or- return a 404, since technically example.com/123/this-article-s-u-x doesn't exist?

  • Password Validation

    - by Humpton
Hi there. Using mysql and php Is there any reason / value when checking a password to query the database using the user name and password (after sanitizing, of course) and recording a failed attempt when no rows are returned vs querying the database using the user name and then comparing the return password string? EDIT: To those who mentioned it below, yes the password is hashed up in the database.

  • Define a varbinary(max) column using sqlalchemy on MS SQL Server

    - by Mark Hall
Hi, I'm querying an SQL Server database using SQLAlchemy and need to cast a column to varbinary(max). The thing I am struggling with is the "max" part. I can get the cast to work for any actual number (say varbinary(20)), but I cannot find how to get it to work for the "max" size of the varbinary column. Any pointers? Links? Solutions? Regards, Mark

  • How To Implement The Query Side Of CQS in DDD?

    - by Laz
I have implemented the command side of DDD using the domain model and repositories, but how do I implement the query side? Do I create an entirely new domain model for the UI, and where is this kept in the project structure...in the domain layer, the UI layer, etc? Also, what do I use as my querying mechanism, do I create new repositories specifically for the UI domain objects, something other than repositories, or something else?

  • How to approach performance issues?

    - by jess
Hi, We are developing a client-server desktop application(winforms with sql server 2008, using LINQ-SQL).We are now finding many issues related to performance. These relate to querying too much data with LINQ , bad database design, not much caching etc. What do you suggest,we should do - how to go about solving these performance issues? One thing,I am doing is doing sql profiling, and trying to fix some queries. As far caching is concerned,we have static lists. But,how to keep them updated,we don't have any server side implementation. So,these lists can be stale,if someone changes data. regards
