  • SFTP, SCP, Secure Webdav: which is the most suitable ?

    - by Xavier Maillard
Hi, currently, I am hosting a webdav share setup in order to store files I need anywhere I am. It is available via HTTPS. Things are that I do not need all the HTTP machinery -i.e. my nginx http server is only there for this webdav folder. I am not sure I made the best choice. My requirements on the client side are: secured transfers mountable as a network drive at work with 'near realtime sync' usable for any OS I could use (including my mobile (android)) At first, I chose webdav since it would pass through my work proxy (which refuses all that is not on HTTP/S (port 80 or 443)). Today, I am not satisfied with the setup and even if nginx memory footprint is pretty small, its webdav support is not really "clean" and full. What would you recommend between SFTP, SCP and the current webdav solution ? I think SFTP is the closest solution but I still have to find out how to pass through my proxy ;) SCP seems quite limited as I read about it (only file transfers if I read right). Cheers

  • Is there an application to log component temperatures to file?

    - by MrVimes
I purchased a computer a month or two ago (core i7, 24gb ram, geforce gtx 590, windows 7 ultimate). Within the last week it began to bluescreen regularly. I tried lots of things (check hds, check memory, reinstall windows etc..) but it still bluescreened. At the time my temps were as follows... CPU - aprox 40/50c. GPU - arpox 60 idle, aprox 90 during heavy use. HDDs - aprox 55c after the PC had been on a while. I thought the 55c was ok, but I have since realized it was probably too high and may have been the direct cause of the bluescreening. I've installed a spare fan I had in the front of the PC blowing air in, (so there's airflow from front to back) Since then, obviously, all my temps are down. Especially the HDDs - three of them reach 30c and one has been up to 47c (it is some distance away from the airflow, in one of the 5.25inch drive bays) I haven't had the PC on for as long as it would normally take to bluescreen yet, but If it does I want to know what all the temps were right before the bluescreen. I have tried Everest but it only shows me realtime temps or gives me the ability to create one-off reports. I want something that can record all the temps to a file at 30 seconds intervals. If the computer bluescreens I can load it up again and check the last entry in the file. Side question: Am I right in thinking 55c was far too hot for a HDD? (It might have got higher than that before the bluescreens.. I don't know) Another side question: Is 47c too high? This is actually why I am asking the main question - I am concerned that this one drive that isn't getting the benefit of the extra fan may still cause the computer to bluescreen.

  • XFS: No space left on device

    - by beketa
    I am using XFS on small HDD (/dev/sdb1, less than 1TB) and storing many small files (-32KB). df -h and -i show that it has available space. # df -hv Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda3 127G 19G 102G 16% / tmpfs 16G 0 16G 0% /lib/init/rw udev 16G 168K 16G 1% /dev tmpfs 16G 0 16G 0% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 99M 20M 75M 21% /boot /dev/sdb1 136G 123G 14G 91% /mnt/sdb1 # df -iv Filesystem Inodes IUsed IFree IUse% Mounted on /dev/sda3 8421376 36199 8385177 1% / tmpfs 4126158 5 4126153 1% /lib/init/rw udev 4124934 671 4124263 1% /dev tmpfs 4126158 1 4126157 1% /dev/shm /dev/sda1 26112 222 25890 1% /boot /dev/sdb1 24905120 11076608 13828512 45% /mnt/sdb1 However I got No space left on device error. # touch /mnt/sdb1/test touch: cannot touch `/mnt/sdb1/test': No space left on device I think inode64 issue is not related to this case because drive is less than 1TB and df -i shows that there are free inodes. I unmounted and mounted with -o inode64 but got the same error. xfs_repair does not report any problem. xfs_info shows drive information as follows. # xfs_info /dev/sdb1 meta-data=/dev/sdb1 isize=1024 agcount=16, agsize=2227764 blks = sectsz=512 attr=2 data = bsize=4096 blocks=35644210, imaxpct=25 = sunit=0 swidth=0 blks naming =version 2 bsize=4096 ascii-ci=0 log =internal bsize=4096 blocks=17404, version=2 = sectsz=512 sunit=0 blks, lazy-count=1 realtime =none extsz=4096 blocks=0, rtextents=0 Any ideas? • Transfer iptables rules to another server (almost) real time

    - by MrShunz
I'm running 2 cPanel servers with ConfigServer Security & Firewall plugin. One of the functions of the plugin is to block via iptables (temporarily and/or permanently) IPs which fail various authentications (POP3/IMAP, SMTP, FTP, webmail, mod_security and such). Now, i'd like to push those IP blocks to the border router to drop packets as soon as possible (and doing so protecting the other machines on the network). Keep in mind that after N failed logins IP is blocked for 5 minutes, then re-allowed. If multiple bans occours in an hour IP is blocked permanently and should be unlocked "by hand". So I need a near realtime solution. What I'm looking for is a better way than firing some cronjobs both on cPanels and border router to: dump the rules to file transfer the file to border router (via scp/sftp) load the rules from the file in the border router I'm aware that I will need some scripts to parse and modify the rules as cPanels have one ethernet interface and some aliases while border router has two ehternet interfaces and some loopbacks. All machines involved use Linux. EDIT as per @pjmorse comment. The plugin consists of a bunch of perl and config files. The part I'm intrested in is a process which scans logfiles (lfd) and installs iptables rules (and sends an alert email). Fact is, it upgrades quite often (one or two times a week) and itself is 7000 lines of perl so I'm not comfortable on tampering with it.

  • cpusets not working - threads aren't running in the cpuset I specified?

    - by lori
    I have used cpuset to shield some cpus for exclusive use by some realtime threads. Displaying the cpuset config with the test app RealtimeTest1 running and its tasks moved into the cpusets: $ cset set --list -r cset: Name CPUs-X MEMs-X Tasks Subs Path ------------ ---------- - ------- - ----- ---- ---------- root 0-23 y 0-1 y 279 2 / system 0,2,4,6,8,10 n 0 n 202 0 /system shield 1,3,5,7,9,11 n 1 n 0 2 /shield RealtimeTest1 1,3,5,7 n 1 n 0 4 /shield/RealtimeTest1 thread1 3 n 1 n 1 0 /shield/RealtimeTest1/thread1 thread2 5 n 1 n 1 0 /shield/RealtimeTest1/thread2 main 1 n 1 n 1 0 /shield/RealtimeTest1/main I can interrogate the cpuset filesystem to show that my tasks are supposedly pinned to the cpus I requested: /cpusets/shield/RealtimeTest1 $ for i in `find -name tasks`; do echo $i; cat $i; echo "------------"; done ./thread1/tasks 17651 ------------ ./main/tasks 17649 ------------ ./thread2/tasks 17654 ------------ Further, if I use sched_getaffinity, it reports what cpuset does - that thread1 is on cpu 3 and thread2 is on cpu 5. However, if I run top -p 17649 -H with f,j to bring up the last used cpu, it shows that thread 1 is running on thread 2's cpu, and main thread is running on a cpu in the system cpuset (Note that thread 17654 is running FIFO, hence thread 17651 is blocked) PID USER PR NI VIRT RES SHR S %CPU %MEM TIME+ P COMMAND 17654 root -2 0 54080 35m 7064 R 100 0.4 5:00.77 3 RealtimeTest 17649 root 20 0 54080 35m 7064 S 0 0.4 0:00.05 2 RealtimeTest 17651 root 20 0 54080 35m 7064 R 0 0.4 0:00.00 3 RealtimeTest Also, looking at /proc/17649/task to find the last_cpu each of its tasks ran on: /proc/17649/task $ for i in `ls -1`; do cat $i/stat | awk '{print $1 " is on " $(NF - 5)}'; done 17649 is on 2 17651 is on 3 17654 is on 3 So cpuset and sched_getaffinity reports one thing, but reality is another I would say that cpuset is not working? My machine configuration is: $ cat /etc/SuSE-release SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11 (x86_64) VERSION = 11 PATCHLEVEL = 1 $ uname -a Linux foobar 2.6.32.12-0.7-default #1 SMP 2010-05-20 11:14:20 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

  • The Future of Air Travel: Intelligence and Automation

    - by BobEvans
Remember those white-knuckle flights through stormy weather where unexpected plunges in altitude result in near-permanent relocations of major internal organs? Perhaps there’s a better way, according to a recent Wall Street Journal article: “Pilots of a Honeywell International Inc. test plane stayed on their initial flight path, relying on the company's latest onboard radar technology to steer through the worst of the weather. The specially outfitted Boeing 757 barely shuddered as it gingerly skirted some of the most ferocious storm cells over Fort Walton Beach and then climbed above the rest in zero visibility.” Or how about the multifaceted check-in process, which might not wreak havoc on liver location but nevertheless makes you wonder if you’ve been trapped in some sort of covert psychological-stress test? Another WSJ article, called “The Self-Service Airport,” says there’s reason for hope there as well: “Airlines are laying the groundwork for the next big step in the airport experience: a trip from the curb to the plane without interacting with a single airline employee. At the airport of the near future, ‘your first interaction could be with a flight attendant,’ said Ben Minicucci, chief operating officer of Alaska Airlines, a unit of Alaska Air Group Inc.” And in the topsy-turvy world of air travel, it’s not just the passengers who’ve been experiencing bumpy rides: the airlines themselves are grappling with a range of challenges—some beyond their control, some not—that make profitability increasingly elusive in spite of heavy demand for their services. A recent piece in The Economist illustrates one of the mega-challenges confronting the airline industry via a striking set of contrasting and very large numbers: while the airlines pay $7 billion per year to third-party computerized reservation services, the airlines themselves earn a collective profit of only $3 billion per year. In that context, the anecdotes above point unmistakably to the future that airlines must pursue if they hope to be able to manage some of the factors outside of their control (e.g., weather) as well as all of those within their control (operating expenses, end-to-end visibility, safety, load optimization, etc.): more intelligence, more automation, more interconnectedness, and more real-time awareness of every facet of their operations. Those moves will benefit both passengers and the air carriers, says the WSJ piece on The Self-Service Airport: “Airlines say the advanced technology will quicken the airport experience for seasoned travelers—shaving a minute or two from the checked-baggage process alone—while freeing airline employees to focus on fliers with questions. ‘It's more about throughput with the resources you have than getting rid of humans,’ said Andrew O'Connor, director of airport solutions at Geneva-based airline IT provider SITA.” Oracle’s attempting to help airlines gain control over these challenges by blending together a range of its technologies into a solution called the Oracle Airline Data Model, which suggests the following steps: • To retain and grow their customer base, airlines need to focus on the customer experience. • To personalize and differentiate the customer experience, airlines need to effectively manage their passenger data. • The Oracle Airline Data Model can help airlines jump-start their customer-experience initiatives by consolidating passenger data into a customer data hub that drives realtime business intelligence and strategic customer insight. • Oracle’s Airline Data Model brings together multiple types of data that can jumpstart your data-warehousing project with rich out-of-the-box functionality. • Oracle’s Intelligent Warehouse for Airlines brings together the powerful capabilities of Oracle Exadata and the Oracle Airline Data Model to give you real-time strategic insights into passenger demand, revenues, sales channels and your flight network. The airline industry aside, the bullet points above offer a broad strategic outline for just about any industry because the customer experience is becoming pre-eminent in each and there is simply no way to deliver world-class customer experiences unless a company can capture, manage, and analyze all of the relevant data in real-time. I’ll leave you with two thoughts from the WSJ article about the new in-flight radar system from Honeywell: first, studies show that a single episode of serious turbulence can wrack up $150,000 in additional costs for an airline—so, it certainly behooves the carriers to gain the intelligence to avoid turbulence as much as possible. And second, it’s back to that top-priority customer-experience thing and the value that ever-increasing levels of intelligence can deliver. As the article says: “In the cabin, reporters watched screens showing the most intense parts of the nearly 10-mile wide storm, which churned some 7,000 feet below, in vibrant red and other colors. The screens also were filled with tiny symbols depicting likely locations of lightning and hail, which can damage planes and wreak havoc on the nerves of white-knuckle flyers.”  (Bob Evans is senior vice-president, communications, for Oracle.)

  • Qt vs WPF/.NET

    - by aaronc
My company is trying to make the decision between using Qt/C++ for our GUI framework or migrating to .NET and using WPF. We have up to this point been using MFC. It seems that .NET/WPF is technically the most advanced and feature-rich platform. I do, however, have several concerns. These include: Platform support Framework longevity (i.e. future-proofing) Performance and overhead For this application we are willing to sacrifice support for Windows 2000, Macs, and Linux. But, the issue is more related to Microsoft's commitment to the framework and their extant platforms. It seems like Microsoft has a bad habit of coming up with something new, hyping it for a few years, and then relegating it to the waste-bin essentially abandoning the developers who chose it. First it was MFC and VB6, then Windows Forms, and now there's WPF. Also with .NET, versions of Windows were progressively nicked off the support list. Looks like WPF could be here to stay for a while, but since its not open source its really in Microsoft's hands. I'm also concerned about the overhead and performance of WPF since some of our applications involve processing large amounts of information and doing real-time data capture. Qt seems like a really good option, but it doesn't have all the features of WPF/.NET couldn't use languages like C#. Basically, what does the community think about Microsoft's commitment to WPF compared with previous frameworks? Are the performance considerations significant enough to avoid using it for a realtime app? And, how significant are the benefits of WPF/.NET in terms of productivity and features compared to Qt?

  • Objective C - displaying data in NSTextView

    - by Leo
Hi, I'm having difficulties displaying data in a TextView in iPhone programming. I'm analyzing incoming audio data (from the microphone). In order to do that, I create an object "analyzer" from my SignalAnalyzer class which performs analysis of the incoming data. What I would like to do is to display each new incoming data in a TextView in realtime. So when I push a button, I create the object "analyzer" whiwh analyze the incoming data. Each time there is new data, I need to display it on the screen in a TextView. My problem is that I'm getting an error because (I think) I'm trying to send a message to the parent class (the one taking care of displaying stuff in my TextView : it has a TexView instance variable linked in Interface Builder). What should I do in order to tell my parent class what it needs to display ? Or how sohould I design my classes to display automaticlally something ? Thank you for your help. PS : Here is my error : 2010-04-19 14:59:39.360 MyApp[1421:5003] void WebThreadLockFromAnyThread(), 0x14a890: Obtaining the web lock from a thread other than the main thread or the web thread. • Intercepting/Hijacking iPhone Touch Events for MKMapView

    - by Shawn
    Is there a bug in the 3.0 SDK that disables real-time zooming and intercepting the zoom-in gesture for the MKMapView? I have some real simple code so I can detect tap events, but there are two problems: zoom-in gesture is always interpreted as a zoom-out none of the zoom gestures update the Map's view in realtime. In hitTest, if I return the "map" view, the MKMapView functionality works great, but I don't get the opportunity to intercept the events. Any ideas? MyMapView.h: @interface MyMapView : MKMapView { UIView *map; } MyMapView.m: - (id)initWithFrame:(CGRect)frame { if (![super initWithFrame:frame]) return nil; self.multipleTouchEnabled = true; return self; } - (UIView *)hitTest:(CGPoint)point withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { NSLog(@"Hit Test"); map = [super hitTest:point withEvent:event]; return self; } - (void)touchesCancelled:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent *)event { NSLog(@"%s", __FUNCTION__); [map touchesCancelled:touches withEvent:event]; } - (void)touchesBegan:(NSSet *)touches withEvent:(UIEvent*)event { NSLog(@"%s", __FUNCTION__); [map touchesBegan:touches withEvent:event]; } - (void)touchesMoved:(NSSet*)touches withEvent:(UIEvent*)event { NSLog(@"%s, %x", __FUNCTION__, mViewTouched); [map touchesMoved:touches withEvent:event]; } - (void)touchesEnded:(NSSet*)touches withEvent:(UIEvent*)event { NSLog(@"%s, %x", __FUNCTION__, mViewTouched); [map touchesEnded:touches withEvent:event]; }

  • Regex to extract this semi formatted data

    - by Codygman
Alright, I can't quite figure out how to do this. Given the following text: Roland AX-1: /start Roland's AX-1 strap-on remote MIDI controller has a very impressive 45-note velocity sensitive keyboard, and has switchable velocity curves, goes octave up/down, transpose, split/layering zones, and has fun tempo control for sequencers and more. Roland's AX-1 comes with a built-in GS control for total MIDI control of GM/GS synths. Its "Expression Bar" can control pitch and mod via an almost ribbon-like controller. It's also the newest and most advanced remote controller for your synths or midi modules. /end Roland AX-7: /start Roland's AX-7 builds on the infamous Roland AX-1 design. You just strap it on and put it to the front of the stage. Offering several controllers, such as: a D-Beam, then you can open the door to amazing live performance. 7-segment LED display, larger patch memory (Around 128 patches with MIDI data backup), and comes with GM2/GS compatibility make it extra easy to use. The 45-note, velocity-sensitive keyboard. 5 realtime controllers including a data entry knob, touch controller knob, opression bar, a hold button, and D-Beam. 128 patches with MIDI data backup. 2 MIDI zones. /end I'm trying to use the following: /^([\w\d \-]*):\s\s\s\s^\/start([^\:]*)\/end$/im You can see on rubular here: http://rubular.com/r/BVRRHsnWdp Thanks for any help. • BroadcastReceiver not receiving an alarm's broadcast

    - by juanjux
    I have a code that sets a new repeating alarm (on production I'll use a inexactRepeating), but the BroadCastReceiver I've registered for handling it is not being called. Here is the code where I set the alarm: newAlarmPeriod = 5000; // For debugging Intent alarmIntent = new Intent(this, GroupsCheckAlarmReceiver.class); PendingIntent sender = PendingIntent.getBroadcast(this, Constants.CHECK_ALARM_CODE, alarmIntent, 0); AlarmManager am = (AlarmManager) getSystemService(ALARM_SERVICE); am.setRepeating(AlarmManager.RTC_WAKEUP, System.currentTimeMillis() + newAlarmPeriod, newAlarmPeriod, sender); It seems to work and it triggers and alarm every five seconds, as seen in the output of "adb shell dumpsys alarm": DUMP OF SERVICE alarm: Current Alarm Manager state: Realtime wakeup (now=1269941046923): RTC_WAKEUP #1: Alarm{43cbac58 type 0 android} type=0 when=1269997200000 repeatInterval=0 count=0 operation=PendingIntent{43bb1738: PendingIntentRecord{43bb1248 android broadcastIntent}} RTC_WAKEUP #0: Alarm{43ce30e0 type 0 com.almarsoft.GroundhogReader} type=0 when=1269941049555 repeatInterval=5000 count=1 operation=PendingIntent{43d990c8: PendingIntentRecord{43d49108 com.almarsoft.GroundhogReader broadcastIntent}} RTC #1: Alarm{43bfc250 type 1 android} type=1 when=1269993600000 repeatInterval=0 count=0 operation=PendingIntent{43c5a618: PendingIntentRecord{43c4f048 android broadcastIntent}} RTC #0: Alarm{43d67dd8 type 1 android} type=1 when=1269941100000 repeatInterval=0 count=0 operation=PendingIntent{43c4e0f0: PendingIntentRecord{43c4f6c8 android broadcastIntent}} Broadcast ref count: 0 Alarm Stats: android 24390ms running, 0 wakeups 80 alarms: act=android.intent.action.TIME_TICK flg=0x40000004 com.almarsoft.GroundhogReader 26ms running, 2 wakeups 2 alarms: flg=0x4 cmp=com.almarsoft.GroundhogReader/.GroupsCheckAlarmReceiver But for some reason my BroadCastReceiver is not being called when the alarm is triggered.   • J2ME web service client

    - by Wasim
Hi all , I started to use the Netbeans 6.8 web service client wizard . I created a web service (.Net web service) witch return an object Data. The Data class , contains fileds with many types : int , string , double , Person object and array of Person object. I created the J2ME client code through the wizard and every thing seems ok . I see in the Netbeans project the service and the stub . When I try to call my web service method , say Data GetData() ; Then I have a problem with parsing the returned data from the web service and the client data object . As follows : After finishing to call the web service method , in the stub code : public Data helloWorld() throws java.rmi.RemoteException { Object inputObject[] = new Object[] { }; Operation op = Operation.newInstance( _qname_operation_HelloWorld, _type_HelloWorld, _type_HelloWorldResponse ); _prepOperation( op ); op.setProperty( Operation.SOAPACTION_URI_PROPERTY, "http://tempuri.org/HelloWorld" ); Object resultObj; try { resultObj = op.invoke( inputObject ); } catch( JAXRPCException e ) { Throwable cause = e.getLinkedCause(); if( cause instanceof java.rmi.RemoteException ) { throw (java.rmi.RemoteException) cause; } throw e; } return Data_fromObject((Object[])resultObj); } private static Data Data_fromObject( Object obj[] ) { if(obj == null) return null; Data result = new Data(); result.setIntData(((Integer )obj[0]).intValue()); result.setStringData((String )obj[1]); result.setDoubleData(((Double )obj[2]).doubleValue()); return result; } I debug the code and in Run time resultObj has one element witc is an array of the Data object , so in parsing the values in the Data_fromObject method it expect many cells like we see in the code obj[0] , obj[1] , obj [2] but in realtime it has obj[0][0] , obj[0][1] , obj[0][2] What can be the problem , how can check the code generation issue ? Is it a problem with the web service side. Please help. Thanks in advance...

  • How to let the user choose between typing price inclusive VAT or exclusive VAT in TextField?

    - by Sanoj
I am implementing an back-office application where the user type in prices for products. Sometimes it is preferred to type the price inclusive value-added-tax, VAT and sometimes exclusive VAT. How do I best let the user choose between the inclusive or exclusive VAT in a usability perspective? I could have two TextFields above eachother one inclusive VAT and one exclusive, and reflect the input. But I don't think that reflecting the input in another TextField at realtime is good when it comes to usability, it distracts the user. I could also have two Radiobuttons above the TextField or below, or maybe besides the TextField that let the user make the choice. Or should I have a single button for turning between inclusive/exclusive VAT? like On/Off-buttons. But what text should I have on the button and how should the button be designed? I think this is good because it takes less space and it is easy to have it close to the TextField, but it's very hard to design a good button in a usability perspective. Please give me some recommendations. Maybe someone of you works with usability or have seen a similar problem.

I am familiar with Cosine similarity and using that algorithm works very well. But it is way to slow. For each article, I need to iterate over all articles, calculate the cosine similarity for the article pair and then select the five articles with the highest similarity rating. With 200k articles and 30k tags, it takes me half a minute to calculate the similar articles for a single article. So I need another algorithm that produces roughly as good results as cosine similarity but that can be run in realtime and which does not require me to iterate over the whole document corpus each time. Maybe someone can suggest an off-the-shelf solution for this? Most of the search engines I looked at does not enable document similarity searching.

  • Are Large iPhone Ping Times Indicative of Application Latency?

    - by yar
I am contemplating creating a realtime app where an iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad talks to a server-side component (which produces MIDI, and sends it onward within the host). When I ping my iPod Touch on Wifi I get huge latency (and a enormous variance, too): 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=9 ttl=64 time=38.616 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=10 ttl=64 time=61.795 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=11 ttl=64 time=85.162 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=12 ttl=64 time=109.956 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=13 ttl=64 time=31.452 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=14 ttl=64 time=55.187 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=15 ttl=64 time=78.531 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=16 ttl=64 time=102.342 ms 64 bytes from 192.168.1.3: icmp_seq=17 ttl=64 time=25.249 ms Even if this is double what the iPhone-Host or Host-iPhone time would be, 15ms+ is too long for the app I'm considering. Is there any faster way around this (e.g., USB cable)? If not, would building the app on Android offer any other options? Traceroute reports more workable times: traceroute to 192.168.1.3 (192.168.1.3), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets 1 192.168.1.3 (192.168.1.3) 4.662 ms 3.182 ms 3.034 ms can anyone decipher this difference between ping and traceroute for me, and what they might mean for an application that needs to talk to (and from) a host?

  • html5 vs flash - full comparison chart anywhere?

    - by iddqd
So since Steve Jobs said Flash sucks and implied that HTML5 can do everything Flash can without the need for a Plugin, I keep hearing those exact words from a lot of People. I would really like to have a Chart somewhere (similar to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_layout_engines_%28HTML5%29#Form_elements_and_attributes ) that I can just show to those people. Showing all the little things that Flash can do right now, that HTML5/Ajax/CSS is not yet even thinking about. But of course also the things that HTML5 does better. I would like to see details compared like audio playback, realtime audio processing, byte level access, bitmap data manipulation, webcam access, binary sockets, stuff in the works such as P2P technology (adobe stratus) and all the stuff I don't know about myself. Ideally with examples of what can be accomplished with, lets say Binary Sockets (such as a POP3 client) because otherwise it won't mean a lot to non-programmers since they will just say "well we can do without Binary Sockets". And ideally with some current benchmarks and some examples of websites that use this technology. I've searched the web and am surprised not to find anything. So is there such a comparison somewhere? Or does anybody want to create this and post it to Wikipedia? ;-)

  • moving audio over a local network using GStreamer

    - by James Turner
I need to move realtime audio between two Linux machines, which are both running custom software (of mine) which builds on top of Gstreamer. (The software already has other communication between the machines, over a separate TCP-based protocol - I mention this in case having reliable out-of-band data makes a difference to the solution). The audio input will be a microphone / line-in on the sending machine, and normal audio output as the sink on the destination; alsasrc and alsasink are the most likely, though for testing I have been using the audiotestsrc instead of a real microphone. GStreamer offers a multitude of ways to move data round over networks - RTP, RTSP, GDP payloading, UDP and TCP servers, clients and sockets, and so on. There's also many examples on the web of streaming both audio and video - but none of them seem to work for me, in practice; either the destination pipeline fails to negotiate caps, or I hear a single packet and then the pipeline stalls, or the destination pipeline bails out immediately with no data available. In all cases, I'm testing on the command-line just gst-launch. No compression of the audio data is required - raw audio, or trivial WAV, uLaw or aLaw encoding is fine; what's more important is low-ish latency.

  • Capturing time intervals when somebody was online? How would you impement this feature?

    - by Kirzilla
Hello, Our aim is to build timelines saying about periods of time when user was online. (It really doesn't matter what user we are talking about and where he was online) To get information about onliners we can call API method, someservice.com/api/?call=whoIsOnline whoIsOnline method will give us a list of users currently online. But there is no API method to get information about who IS NOT online. So, we should build our timelines using information we got from whoIsOnline. Of course there will be a measurement error (we can't track information in realtime). Let's suppose that we will call whoIsOnline method every 2 minutes (yes, we will run our script by cron every 2 minutes). For example, calling whoIsOnline at 08:00 will return Peter_id Michal_id Andy_id calling whoIsOnline at 08:02 will return Michael_id Andy_id George_id As you can see, Peter has gone offline, but we have new onliner - George. Available instruments are Db(MySQL) / text files / key-value storage (Redis/memcache); feel free to choose any of them (or even all of them). So, we have to get information like this George_id was online... 12 May: 08:02-08:30, 12:40-12:46, 20:14-22:36 11 May: 09:10-12:30, 21:45-23:00 10 May: was not online And now question... How would you store information to implement such timelines? How would you query/calculate information about periods of time when user was online? Additional information.. You cannot update information about offline users, only users who are "currently" online. Solution should be flexible: timeline information could be represented relating to any timezone. We should keep information only for last 7 days. Every user seen online is automatically getting his own identifier in our database. Uff.. it was really hard for me to write it because my English is pretty bad, but I hope my question will be clear for you. Thank you.

  • Reasons for & against a Database

    - by dbemerlin
Hi, i had a discussion with a coworker about the architecture of a program i'm writing and i'd like some more opinions. The Situation: The Program should update at near-realtime (+/- 1 Minute). It involves the movement of objects on a coordinate system. There are some events that occur at regular intervals (i.e. creation of the objects). Movements can change at any time through user input. My solution was: Build a server that runs continously and stores the data internally. The server dumps a state-of-the-program at regular intervals to protect against powerfailures and/or crashes. He argued that the program requires a Database and i should use cronjobs to update the data. I can store movement information by storing startpoint, endpoint and speed and update the position in the cronjob (and calculate collisions with other objects there) by calculating direction and speed. His reasons: Requires more CPU & Memory because it runs constantly. Powerfailures/Crashes might destroy data. Databases are faster. My reasons against this are mostly: Not very precise as events can only occur at full minutes (wouldn't be that bad though). Requires (possibly costly) transformation of data on every run from relational data to objects. RDBMS are a general solution for a specialized problem so a specialized solution should be more efficient. Powerfailures (or other crashes) can leave the Data in an undefined state with only partially updated data unless (possibly costly) precautions (like transactions) are taken. What are your opinions about that? Which arguments can you add for any side?

  • Rails : fighting long http response times with ajax. Is it a good idea? Please, help with implementa

    - by baranov
Hi, everybody! I've googled some tutorials, browsed some SO answers, and was unable to find a recipe for my problem. I'm writing a web site which is supposed to display almost realtime stock chart. Data is stored in constantly updating MySQL database, I wrote a find_by_sql query code which fetches all the data I need to get my chart drawn. Everything is ok, except performance - it takes from one second to one minute for different queries to fetch all the data from the database, this time includes necessary (My)SQL-server side calculations. This is simply unacceptable. I got the following idea: if the data is queried from the MySQL server one point a time instead of entire dataset, it takes only about 1-100ms to get an individual point. I imagine the data fetch process might be browser-driven. After the user presses the button in order to get a chart drawn, controller makes one request to the database and renders, say, a progress bar, say 1% ready. When the browser gets the response, it immediately makes an (ajax) request, and the server fetches the next piece of data and renders "2%". And so on, until all the data is ready and the server displays the requested chart. Could this be implemented in rails+js, is there a tutorial for solving a similar problem on the Web? I suppose if the thing is feasible at all, somebody should have already done this before. I have read several articles about ajax, I believe I do understand general principles, but never did nontrivial ajax programming myself. Thanks for your time!

  • Interchange structured data between Haskell and C

    - by Eonil
First, I'm a Haskell beginner. I'm planning integrating Haskell into C for realtime game. Haskell does logic, C does rendering. To do this, I have to pass huge complexly structured data (game state) from/to each other for each tick (at least 30 times per second). So the passing data should be lightweight. This state data may laid on sequential space on memory. Both of Haskell and C parts should access every area of the states freely. In best case, the cost of passing data can be copying a pointer to a memory. In worst case, copying whole data with conversion. I'm reading Haskell's FFI(http://www.haskell.org/haskellwiki/FFICookBook#Working_with_structs) The Haskell code look specifying memory layout explicitly. I have a few questions. Can Haskell specify memory layout explicitly? (to be matched exactly with C struct) Is this real memory layout? Or any kind of conversion required? (performance penalty) If Q#2 is true, Any performance penalty when the memory layout specified explicitly? What's the syntax #{alignment foo}? Where can I find the document about this? If I want to pass huge data with best performance, how should I do that? *PS Explicit memory layout feature which I said is just C#'s [StructLayout] attribute. Which is specifying in-memory position and size explicitly. http://www.developerfusion.com/article/84519/mastering-structs-in-c/ I'm not sure Haskell has matching linguistic construct matching with fields of C struct.

  • Sharing a COM port over TCP

    - by guinness
What would be a simple design pattern for sharing a COM port over TCP to multiple clients? For example, a local GPS device that could transmit co-ordinates to remote hosts in realtime. So I need a program that would open the serial port and accept multiple TCP connections like: class Program { public static void Main(string[] args) { SerialPort sp = new SerialPort("COM4", 19200, Parity.None, 8, StopBits. One); Socket srv = new Socket(AddressFamily.InterNetwork, SocketType.Stream, ProtocolType.Tcp); srv.Bind(new IPEndPoint(IPAddress.Any, 8000)); srv.Listen(20); while (true) { Socket soc = srv.Accept(); new Connection(soc); } } } I would then need a class to handle the communication between connected clients, allowing them all to see the data and keeping it synchronized so client commands are received in sequence: class Connection { static object lck = new object(); static List<Connection> cons = new List<Connection>(); public Socket socket; public StreamReader reader; public StreamWriter writer; public Connection(Socket soc) { this.socket = soc; this.reader = new StreamReader(new NetworkStream(soc, false)); this.writer = new StreamWriter(new NetworkStream(soc, true)); new Thread(ClientLoop).Start(); } void ClientLoop() { lock (lck) { connections.Add(this); } while (true) { lock (lck) { string line = reader.ReadLine(); if (String.IsNullOrEmpty(line)) break; foreach (Connection con in cons) con.writer.WriteLine(line); } } lock (lck) { cons.Remove(this); socket.Close(); } } } The problem I'm struggling to resolve is how to facilitate communication between the SerialPort instance and the threads. I'm not certain that the above code is the best way forward, so does anybody have another solution (the simpler the better)?

  • NSTask Tail -f Using objective C

    - by Bach
I need to read the last added line to a log file, in realtime, and capture that line being added. Something similar to Tail -f. So my first attempt was to use Tail -f using NSTask. I can't see any output using the code below: NSTask *server = [[NSTask alloc] init]; [server setLaunchPath:@"/usr/bin/tail"]; [server setArguments:[NSArray arrayWithObjects:@"-f", @"/path/to/my/LogFile.txt",nil]]; NSPipe *outputPipe = [NSPipe pipe]; [server setStandardInput:[NSPipe pipe]]; [server setStandardOutput:outputPipe]; [server launch]; [server waitUntilExit]; [server release]; NSData *outputData = [[outputPipe fileHandleForReading] readDataToEndOfFile]; NSString *outputString = [[[NSString alloc] initWithData:outputData encoding:NSUTF8StringEncoding] autorelease]; NSLog (@"Output \n%@", outputString); I can see the output as expected when using: [server setLaunchPath:@"/bin/ls"]; How can i capture the output of that tail NSTask? Is there any alternative to this method, where I can open a stream to file and each time a line is added, output it on screen? (basic logging functionality)

  • Creating collaborative whiteboard drawing application

    - by Steven Sproat
I have my own drawing program in place, with a variety of "drawing tools" such as Pen, Eraser, Rectangle, Circle, Select, Text etc. It's made with Python and wxPython. Each tool mentioned above is a class, which all have polymorphic methods, such as left_down(), mouse_motion(), hit_test() etc. The program manages a list of all drawn shapes -- when a user has drawn a shape, it's added to the list. This is used to manage undo/redo operations too. So, I have a decent codebase that I can hook collaborative drawing into. Each shape could be changed to know its owner -- the user who drew it, and to only allow delete/move/rescale operations to be performed on shapes owned by one person. I'm just wondering the best way to develop this. One person in the "session" will have to act as the server, I have no money to offer free central servers. Somehow users will need a way to connect to servers, meaning some kind of "discover servers" browser...or something. How do I broadcast changes made to the application? Drawing in realtime and broadcasting a message on each mouse motion event would be costly in terms of performance and things get worse the more users there are at a given time. Any ideas are welcome, I'm not too sure where to begin with developing this (or even how to test it)
