• Testing objects for changes

  I have an application that needs to determine whether a user has made a change to an object. So, when the object is first loaded, I create a deep copy (using serialization/deserialization) and save the copy to a separate field. The copy becomes myCurrentObject, and the original becomes myOriginalObject. Now I need to test myCurrentObject for changes, which I plan to do by comparing it to myOriginalObject. All I need is a boolean result indicating whether any changes have been made. I have already determined that a simple hashcode comparison won't work. GetHashCode() generates different results for the two objects, even when there are no changes. I am getting ready to write a method to do a property-by-property comparison, but before I do, I thought I would check to see if there is a simpler and more reusable way to test myCurrentObject to see if it has changed from myOriginalObject. Any suggestions? Thanks for your help.

  The advantages of DI, as far as I am aware, are: Reduced Dependencies More Reusable Code More Testable Code More Readable Code Say I have a repository, OrderRepository, which acts as a repository for an Order object generated through a Linq to Sql dbml. I can't make my orders repository generic as it performs mapping between the Linq Order entity and my own Order POCO domain class. Since the OrderRepository by necessity is dependent on a specific Linq to Sql DataContext, parameter passing of the DataContext can't really be said to make the code reuseable or reduce dependencies in any meaningful way. It also makes the code harder to read, as to instantiate the repository I now need to write new OrdersRepository(new MyLinqDataContext()) which additionally is contrary to the main purpose of the repository, that being to abstract/hide the existence of the DataContext from consuming code. So in general I think this would be a pretty horrible design, but it would give the benefit of facilitating unit testing. Is this enough justification? Or is there a third way? I'd be very interested in hearing opinions.

• Branchless memory manager?

  Anyone thought about how to write a memory manager (in C++) that is completely branch free? I've written a pool, a stack, a queue, and a linked list (allocating from the pool), but I am wondering how plausible it is to write a branch free general memory manager. This is all to help make a really reusable framework for doing solid concurrent, in-order CPU, and cache friendly development. Edit: by branchless I mean without doing direct or indirect function calls, and without using ifs. I've been thinking that I can probably implement something that first changes the requested size to zero for false calls, but haven't really got much more than that. I feel that it's not impossible, but the other aspect of this exercise is then profiling it on said "unfriendly" processors to see if it's worth trying as hard as this to avoid branching.

  Hi guys, I'm looking for a way to do this ... SELECT FirstName, LastName, Split(AddressBlock, ' ', 1), Split(AddressBlock, ' ', 2), PostCode FROM Contacts The arguments I want to pass are ... The address The separator (current situation requires 2 spaces but this might be a comma or a space followed by a comma) or something else (it varies). The address part I want to return (i don't always need all parts of the split result). I seem to be able to find a few examples of splitting functions about the internet but they return a table containing the entire set of split parts. My SQL skills aren't that great so I need the answer to be ultra simple. I'm always working with nvarchar data and the function needs to be reusable.

• Wicket : Can a Panel or Component react on a form submit without any boilerplate code?

  I am currently evaluating Wicket and I am trying to figure out how things work. I have a question regarding form submit and panels (or other components). Imagine a custom wicket panel which contains a text field, doing as-you-type validation using ajax. This panel is added to a form. How can the Panel react a form submit (let's say because javascript/ajax is unavailable)? I am currently only aware of one solution: calling a panel's method inside the Form onSubmit() method. But this seems not like a "reusable" approach here, because I have to add boilerplate code to every form's onSubmit() which contains the panel (and every developer which use the panel must know this). So here comes my question: Is there any way that a Panel/Component can "detect" a form submit in some way? Or is there any other solution beside this? Thank you.

  Hi all, I want to able to create reusable user controls within my web app and i'm wondering on how to go about doing so. Should a user controls properties be visible to a form that's using it? What's the best way to go about loading the controls on the user control from the form thats using it? Should there be a public method within the control that allows you to load it from an external form or should the user control be loaded in the page load event Is it okay to nest user controls within user controls? etc... • Database table copying

  I am trying to rectify a previous database creation with tables that contains data that needs to be saved. Instead of recreating a completely new database since some of the tables are still reusable, I need to split a table that exists into 2 new tables which I have done. Now I am trying to insert the data into the 2 new tables and because of duplicate data in the old table I am having a hard time doing this. Old table structure: ClientProjects clientId PK clientName clientProj hashkey MD5 (clientname and clientProj) new table structures: client clientId PK clientName projects queryId PK clientId PK projectName I hope this makes sense. The problem is that in the old table for example you have clients with multiple clientIds.

• How do you handle large repeated UI elements with JQuery

  Howdy, Here's the situation: You have a very complex UI element that is repeated in a list. Each has a menu on it, buttons, it hides and shows subelements, buttons for switch it's state, etc, etc. The elements are populated via JSON so you have to construct the elements and the functionality of the fly. What's the best way to accomplish this with JQuery? Where would you save the reusable template for the DOM structure? How would you add the behavior on? $().live? .livequery? onclick? manual after every JSON get? I guess I just see a lot of people doing different things. What's your experience with performance?   I'm trying to create a simple reusable search using LINQ to SQL. I pass in a list of words entered in a search box. Basically the goal is to reuse the search logic by dynamically selecting what to search on at runtime.

So we have developed XXXbean classes to be used as SLSB and XXXRepository classes to be used as persistence classes. We also have POJO that implement reusable NON business logic(get list of countries etc) and we call then service/helper Classes. We use EJB3 JPA (using Hibernate provider) and Repository classes has all the methods for CRUD operation and the get methods for data access. Currently XXXRepository classes are all POJO and we instantiate these classes directly from the bean XXXClasses or from the service Objects. Should the XXXRepository classes be SLSB ? what would be the benefits and pitfalls of converting them to SLSB?

• WPF - Handling events from user control in View Model

  I’m building a WPF application using MVVM pattern (both are new technologies for me). I use user controls for simple bits of reusable functionality that doesn’t contain business logic, and MVVM pattern to build application logic. Suppose a view contains my user control that fires events, and I want to add an event handler to that event. That event handler should be in the view model of the view, because it contains business logic. The question is – view and the view model are connected only by binding; how do I connect an event handler using binding? Is it even possible (I suspect not)? If not – how should I handle events from a control in the view model? Maybe I should use commands or INotifyPropertyChanged?

Also, as the projection can occur in several places in the Repository we break the DRY principle. Is there any way to abstract out the projection or replace it with a delegate? I.e. replace the code firstProp = h.StringProp1, secondProp = h.StringProp2 with something reusable?

• Communicating between classes set up in nib, in code?

  A beginner's question: If, in your nib, you have the File's Owner linked to the ViewController class, and you also have a NSObject-derived class, how do you communicate between the ViewController class and the NSObject class within code? For instance, suppose ScientificCalculatorView.xib looks like this File's Owner (class: ScientificCalculatorViewController) FirstResponder View Calculator (an object that has been linked to the Calculator class) Obviously, I'd want Calculator to be reusable, so it could be used with a NormalCalculatorViewController or something like that. So that UI and the calculator code are separate. Does Calculator even need to be in the nib? It's a beginners question, but I'm just trying to get my head around it.

• Design pattern to encapsulate common funtionality among UI controls

  I'm brainstorming some ideas around a pattern to use for the following scenario. I have some 3rd party controls that I want to add common functionality to. Functionality is added by handling several of the the events and doing certain things when the events fire along with adding some private variables to hold some state info between events. I want to reuse the code and functionality so this is what I'd typically do. Create a class for this functionality and pass in the instance of the control that I want to add the functionality to in the constructor. Then I can add event handlers to the control in the instance of the class. Can anyone think of alternative patterns to use in order to create this kind of reusable functionality.

  Hello everyone, I want to count the number of accounts from the resulting table generated from this code. This way, I know how many people liked blue at one time. Select Distinct PEOPLE.FullName, PEOPLE.FavColor From PEOPLE Where FavColor='Blue' Lets say this is a history accounting of what people said their favorite color when they were asked so there may be multiple records of the same full name if asked again at a much later time; hence the distinct. The code I used may not be reusable in your answer so feel free to use what you think can work. I am sure I found a possible solution to my problem using declare and if statements but I lost that page... so I am left with no solution. However, I think there is a way to do it without using conditionals which is what I am asking and rather have. Thanks. • WPF combo box, adding an all options item, when binding to an Observable Collection

  So I've got an object that has an observable collection. Most places I bind to this collection I only want the user to select a single item. But in one place I want the combobox to include an all items option. Is the way to do this simply with xaml converter? It seems like doing it in the view model would be a good idea, but it's really a lot dependency object goop to basically wire up an collection that is two objects deep for an on change event, where as the xaml converter just works. But I always feel like xaml converters should be generic and reusable, where in this instance, the xaml converter would be more of a one off. Of course the third option would be to create one off list for UI in the object that contains the standard observable collection. But this seems to be mixing the logic and presentation in a way that makes me uncomfortable.

I get an error: "Cannot refer to an instance member of a class from within a shared method or shared member initializer without an explicit instance of the class."   Basically, I am diving ever deeper into complex programming practices. I've almost no friends that are experienced (or more experienced than me) programmers to learn from, so I am looking for the next best thing - learning from the work of strangers. Can anyone recommend a real world finished and working application written well and OOP-centered. I'd like to take and analyze its source. Bonus if it's based on Zend Framework. What I am interested most in is objects that unlike desktop applications, have only one real operation done to them (or to their representation in DB or session) during their lifetime (or pageload), like user-logIn(). I'm interested in optimal and reusable design patterns and their real life implementations.

  Hello all, I'm looking to purchase a jquery book. I'm a strong C# developer whose had experience with dojo. Now, I'm building my own site and am looking to learn a new platform in the process. So, I've chosen jquery. With dojo, I know how to make my own widgets. I want to learn about ways to plug into jquery to make reusable controls. Also, I plan to make heavy use of json with ajax. Other things to consider: I would call my javascript expertise as intermediate. I'd like to find a book that is as up to date with the jquery platform as possible as I know that in a few months it will likely be out of date. What book or books would you reccomend?

  This must come up very often. When the user is editing preferences in an Android app, I'd like them to be able to see the currently set value of the preference in the Preference summary. Example: if I have a Preference setting for "Discard old messages" that specifies the number of days after which messages need to be cleaned up. In the PreferenceActivity I'd like the user to see: "Discard old messages" <- title "Clean up messages after x days" <- summary where x is the current Preference value Extra credit: make this reusable, so I can easily apply it to all my preferences regardless of their type (so that it work with EditTextPreference, ListPreference etc. with minimal amount of coding).

• Should the name of my classes begin with 'Q' in Qt?

  Hello Everyone, When I first started working with Qt, it was extremely annoying that every class has a name beginning with 'Q', but now I've got used to it. I'm using Qt Creator, and it highlights code quite well. However, it only highlights class names beginning with 'Q'. And it highlights everything beginning with 'Q' even if there is no such type. It doesn't highlight custom class names. That makes me wonder, should I also begin all my class names with 'Q'? Or at least the reusable ones? (I mean, those that I put in a class library, or reuse in another app.) I've seen several places where they named their classes this way. Is it a good thing? I found this page about Qt's naming conventions, but it doesn't deal with this question. Also, I don't understand why Qt doesn't use namespaces.

• iOS subview widget hooked up to multiple controllers

  So, I want to create a reusable widget as a xib and subview that can appear on a set amount of specific screens. This widget will have three buttons, each with an Action. I want to be able to handle these actions on multiple viewcontrollers. So say ViewControllerA, ViewControllerD, and ViewControllerF can handle the three button events, each in their own way. I've created the nib file. How do I import it into the specific viewcontrollers, and then how do I wire up those events? EDIT: I know that I could potentially get outlets set up via a viewcontroller, but Apple states that UIViewController is for full-screen views only, and my widget is only taking up a small portion of the screen.
