  • scalability with nginx, passenger, ruby on rails setup

    Hey guys I had a question regarding scalability for my RoR application. We have been optimizing our application over the last few days and after running blitz.io, notice that our application times out after maybe 1000 hits in 30 seconds we experienced massive timeouts. In the 1 minute test apparently 74% of users would have timed out. Look at the performance of my website: http://blitz.io/report/1c8eb2f395a5eadeabd62fd831ada9e5 Not saying that our website will in any way experience this now, but I wish to design the infrastructure to handle this. What is normally done in this situation? Currently we have one web server and one database server. Would load balancing be the route to go?

  • What is the best way to set a database entry so that it expires after n hours using Ruby/Rails?

    My app has a token model as such: class Token < ActiveRecord::Base # The model include a few attributes including created_at end I want entries linked to this model to expire after 6 hours, meaning that they should get automatically deleted. Through net i have come to know Ubuntu has inbuilt postgreSQL application. But when i installed i don't know how to see whether it is already installed. Could you please help me in solving this issue. It's high priority and i have short time to finish my work. I am just trying to use mysql with rails with a mongrel server.     I have PostgreSQL 8.4 and 9.0 running on the same server (Ubuntu Lucid). I installed them both via apt-get (8.4 with the default package sources, and 9.0 after adding the ppa from https://launchpad.net/~pitti/+archive/postgresql). When I run a command like "createdb" from the command line or start up the "psql" shell, PostgreSQL version 8.4 is used by default on my system. So, how do I force these commands to use PostgreSQL 9.0 instead of 8.4?

  • Which version of rails should I install with ruby 2.0.0 installed?

    Hi I am building a ROR development environment on a new computer with windows 7, now I have Ruby version 2.0.0 and Gems version 2.2.2 installed. Which version of Rails should I install? I saw this on rubyonrails.org/download : "We recommend Ruby 2.1.0 for use with Rails. We stopped supporting Ruby 1.8.x after Rails 3.2. Ruby 1.9.2+ will be supported until Rails 5." I will be working on a long-time project, I'm just trying to lessen the headaches I will have later. Right now, the latest Rails -v is 4.1.0 and they recommend Ruby 2.1.0 for use with Rails. I think the best option is to go with this set. Any other thoughts?

    I've got 2 Ruby versions: 1.8.7 and 1.9.2 and PostgreSQL 8.3. I cant install pg gem on any of them.     I'm trying to write a rails application where users can upload images, but Paperclip doesn't seem to be working for me.   • Third-party open-source projects in .NET and Ruby and NIH syndrome

    The title might seem to be inflammatory, but it's here to catch your eye after all. I'm a professional .NET developer, but I try to follow other platforms as well. With Ruby being all hyped up (mostly due to Rails, I guess) I cannot help but compare the situation in open-source projects in Ruby and .NET. What I personally find interesting is that .NET developers are for the most part severely suffering from the NIH syndrome and are very hesitant to use someone else's code in pretty much any shape or form. Comparing it with Ruby, I see a striking difference. Folks out there have gems literally for every little piece of functionality imaginable. New projects are popping out left and right and generally are heartily welcomed. On the .NET side we have CodePlex which I personally find to be a place where abandoned projects grow old and eventually get abandoned. Now, there certainly are several well-known and maintained projects, but the number of those pales in comparison with that of Ruby. Granted, NIH on the .NET devs part comes mostly from the fact that there are very few quality .NET projects out there, let alone projects that solve their specific needs, but even if there is such a project, it's often frowned upon and is reinvented in-house. So my question is multi-fold: Do you find my observations anywhere near being correct? If so, what are your thoughts on quality and quantitiy of OSS projects in .NET? Again, if you do agree with my thoughts on "NIH in .NET", what do you think is causing it? And finally, is it Ruby's feature set & community standpoint (dynamic language, strong focus on testing) that allows for such easy integration of third-party code?

A great example of this is C++ Primer Plus by Stephen Prata or Scientific Programming with Python or the Horstmann Java books. All of those books have a number of programming exercises at the end tailored to that specific chapter. I love the styles of those book and was wondering if there is anything similar for Ruby. I've extensively searched google for this and people have been suggesting different stuff like different websites like Ruby Koans and LRTHW but honestly, I've tried those and they aren't for me. I taught myself Python with the the Hard Way book and to be honest, it's not for me. Now, forgive me if I'm blunt but does anyone have a Ruby programming BOOK (i.e. not a website), that has EXERCISES in it? I do NOT want a website, unless the book is only or is freely available online by the author, similar to the Hard Way books. I would say that I'm a intermediate level programmer with only some Ruby experience but if you know of a beginner book on Ruby, that is fine too. Thanks in advance, I would really really appreciate the help.

[unixODBC][Driver Manager]Invalid attribute/option identifier Both the client and the server are Centos 5.4 Xen guests with the following RPMs installed: postgresql-libs-8.1.18-2.el5_4.1 postgresql-odbc-08.01.0200-3.1 postgresql-8.1.18-2.el5_4.1 postgresql-server-8.1.18-2.el5_4.1 Its possible the schema changed as part of the upgrade, could this explain the error message? What does this error message actually indicate, and do you know any likely causes of it?

  • Resolving “ssl handshake failure” error in PostgresQL

    I would like to connect to my Postgres 8.3 database using SSL from my XP client using OpenSSL. This works fine without SSL. When I try it with SSL (no client certificate), I get the error: error:140790E5:SSL routines:SSL23_WRITE:ssl handshake failure I have followed the instructions in the Postgres manual for SSL including creating a self-signed certificate. In my pg_hba.conf there is a line: host dbname loginname 123.45.67.89/32 md5 The version of OpenSSL on the server is 0.9.8g and on the client is 0.9.8j. I'd appreciate any suggestions for tracking down the problem. Edit: The uncommented lines from postgresql.conf are: data_directory = '/var/ebs0/postgres/main' hba_file = '/etc/postgresql/8.3/main/pg_hba.conf' ident_file = '/etc/postgresql/8.3/main/pg_ident.conf' external_pid_file = '/var/run/postgresql/8.3-main.pid' listen_addresses = '*' port = 5432 max_connections = 100 unix_socket_directory = '/var/run/postgresql' ssl = true shared_buffers = 24MB

    im having a strange problem with bundler. Using ruby 1.8 the following works fine however not with 1.9 it always results in Could not find rake-0.9.2.2 in any of the sources Run `bundle install` to install missing gems. i dont understand why, but it functions correctly with rvm.
