  • SSH closing by itself - root works fine

    - by Antti
    I'm trying to connect to a server but if i use any other user than root the connection closes itself after a successful login: XXXXXXX:~ user$ ssh -v [email protected] OpenSSH_5.2p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8l 5 Nov 2009 debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh_config debug1: Connecting to XXXXXXX.XXXXXX.XXX [xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx] port 22. debug1: Connection established. debug1: identity file /Users/user/.ssh/identity type -1 debug1: identity file /Users/user/.ssh/id_rsa type -1 debug1: identity file /Users/user/.ssh/id_dsa type 2 debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_4.3 debug1: match: OpenSSH_4.3 pat OpenSSH_4* debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0 debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.2 debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT received debug1: kex: server->client aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: kex: client->server aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REQUEST(1024<1024<8192) sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_GROUP debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_INIT sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REPLY debug1: Host 'XXXXXXX.XXXXXX.XXX' is known and matches the RSA host key. debug1: Found key in /Users/user/.ssh/known_hosts:12 debug1: ssh_rsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-with-mic,password debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering public key: /Users/user/.ssh/woo_openssh debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-with-mic,password debug1: Offering public key: /Users/user/.ssh/sidlee.dsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-with-mic,password debug1: Trying private key: /Users/user/.ssh/identity debug1: Trying private key: /Users/user/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Offering public key: /Users/user/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,gssapi-with-mic,password debug1: Next authentication method: password [email protected]'s password: debug1: Authentication succeeded (password). debug1: channel 0: new [client-session] debug1: Entering interactive session. I would like to enable specific accounts to log in so that i can disable root. This is a GridServer/Media Temple (CentOS).

  • How can I avoid SSH's host verification for known hosts?

I get the following prompt everytime I try to connect a server using SSH. I type "yes", but is there a way to aovid this? The authenticity of host '111.222.333.444 (111.222.333.444)' can't be established. RSA key fingerprint is f3:cf:58:ae:71:0b:c8:04:6f:34:a3:b2:e4:1e:0c:8b. • What are the common pitfalls that would stop Authorised Key SSH access, and how do I find and correct for them?

    - by Ashimema
EDIT: This question was reworked to make it more useful to the community and less specific to me. Questions seem to come up reasonably often regarding ssh and problems with authorised keys access, but very few seem to have a clear answer anywhere; Server keeps asking for password after I've copied my SSH Public Key to authorized_keys ssh not accepting public key how do I use ssh with key access in 11.10 passwordless ssh not working So, In the communities opinion, what is the tried and tested method for getting to the bottom of such problems?

  • Upgrade from 13.04 to 13.10 broke remote SSH access?

I can no longer connect via SSH to my Ubuntu instance after upgrading from 13.04 to 13.10 with: # do-release-upgrade Connecting with $ ssh -vvv [ip here] gives me: OpenSSH_6.3, OpenSSL 1.0.1e 11 Feb 2013 debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 debug1: Connecting to [ip here] [[ip here]] port 22. debug1: connect to address [ip here] port 22: Connection timed out ssh: connect to host [ip here] port 22: Connection timed out So I tried uncommenting #PasswordAuthentication yes in /etc/ssh/sshd_config, and restarting with /etc/init.d/ssh restart; but there was no difference.

  • Ubuntu 9.10 RSA authentication: ssh fails, filezilla runs fine

    - by MariusPontmercy
This is quite a mistery for me. I usually use passwordless RSA authentication to login into my remote *nix servers with ssh and sftp. Never had any problem until now. I cannot connect to an Ubuntu 9.10 machine: user@myclient$ ssh -i .ssh/Ganymede_key [email protected] [...] debug1: Host 'ganymede.server.com' is known and matches the RSA host key. debug1: Found key in /home/user/.ssh/known_hosts:14 debug2: bits set: 494/1024 debug1: ssh_rsa_verify: signature correct debug2: kex_derive_keys debug2: set_newkeys: mode 1 debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug2: set_newkeys: mode 0 debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug2: service_accept: ssh-userauth debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug2: key: .ssh/Ganymede_key (0xb96a0ef8) debug2: key: .ssh/Ganymede_key ((nil)) debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,password,keyboard-interactive debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Offering public key: .ssh/Ganymede_key debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,password,keyboard-interactive debug1: Trying private key: .ssh/Ganymede_key debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,password,keyboard-interactive debug2: we did not send a packet, disable method debug1: Next authentication method: keyboard-interactive debug2: userauth_kbdint debug2: we sent a keyboard-interactive packet, wait for reply debug2: input_userauth_info_req debug2: input_userauth_info_req: num_prompts 1 Then it falls back to password authentication. If I disable password authentication on the remote machine my connection attempt just fails with a "Permission denied (publickey)." state. Same thing for sftp from command line. • Forward all traffic through an ssh tunnel

    - by Eamorr
I hope someone can follow this and I'll explain as best I can. I'm trying to forward all traffic from port 6999 on x.x.x.224, through an ssh tunnel, and onto port 7000 on x.x.x.218. Here is some ASCII art: |browser|-----|Squid on x.x.x.224|------|ssh tunnel|------<satellite link>-----|Squid on x.x.x.218|-----|www| 3128 6999 7000 80 When I remove the ssh tunnel, everything works fine. The idea is to turn off encryption on the ssh tunnel (to save bandwidth) and turn on maximum compression (to save more bandwidth). This is because it's a satellite link. Here's the ssh tunnel I've been using: ssh -C -f -C -o CompressionLevel=9 -o Cipher=none [email protected] -L 7000:172.16.1.224:6999 -N The trouble is, I don't know how to get data from Squid on x.x.x.224 into the ssh tunnel? Am I going about this the wrong way? Should I create an ssh tunnel on x.x.x.218? I use iptables to stop squid on x.x.x.224 from reading port 80, but to feed from port 6999 instead (i.e. via the ssh tunnel). Do I need another iptables rule? Any comments greatly appreciated. Many thanks in advance,

  • another "SSH connect to host github.com port 22: Bad file number"

    - by Mariusz
Hello. I have a problem with my first-time ssh connection. Yes, I've already done yours guides, already tried your "Dealing with firewalls and proxies" article and the problem is still occuring. I am using Win7 32bit, Windows Firewall is disabled, haven't any third-party firewalls, ESET Nod32 Antivirus is not blocking any ports, I am not using any PROXY (neither local proxy) . Here goes the logs: Ordinary SSH connection try C:\Users\Mariusz>ssh -vvv [email protected] OpenSSH_4.6p1, OpenSSL 0.9.8e 23 Feb 2007 debug2: ssh_connect: needpriv 0 debug1: Connecting to github.com [207.97.227.239] port 22. debug1: connect to address 207.97.227.239 port 22: Not owner ssh: connect to host github.com port 22: Bad file number NCAT connection try C:\Users\Mariusz>ncat github.com 22 Strange connect error from 207.97.227.239 (10013): No error 10013 = WSAEACCES I think that method called "smart-http-support" won't be usable for me because I haven't created repo yet. I have just GIT INIT locally, and finished at step GIT PUSH, which returns the same: ssh: connect to host github.com port 22: Bad file number fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly corkscrew method (first article from yours guide) . While PUTTYing (with pageant in bg), after inputing login - an error is occuring (MessageBox): Disconnected: No supported authentication methods available And in terminal such message is printing out: Server refused our key Key I have generated correctly, using ssh-keygen. I tried not method by editing ~/.ssh/config yet because I had thought that because I haven't PUSHed anything to my remote repo so I won't be able to CLONE anything. Method called ssh-forwarding is not for my, cause it "requires access to an external ssh server" and I haven't any at this time. What else could I do? Thanks in advance for any help. Mariusz.

  • ssh without password does not work for some users

    - by joshxdr
I have a new RHEL4 Linux box that I am using to copy data to old Solaris 2.6 and RHEL3 Linux boxes with scp. I have found that with the same setup, it works for some users but not for others. For user jane, this works fine: jane@host1$ ssh -v remhost debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /mnt/home/osborjo/.ssh/identity debug1: Offering public key: /mnt/home/osborjo/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-rsa blen 277 debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey). for user jack it does not: jack@host1 ssh -v remhost debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /mnt/home/oper1/.ssh/identity debug1: Offering public key: /mnt/home/oper1/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,password,keyboard-interactive I have looked at the permissions for all the keys and files, they look the same. Since I am using home directories mounted by NFS, the keys for both the remote host and the local host are in the same directory. This is how things look for jane: jane@host1$ ls -l $HOME/.ssh -rw-rw-r-- 1 jane operator 394 Jan 27 16:28 authorized_keys -rw------- 1 jane operator 1675 Jan 27 16:27 id_rsa -rw-r--r-- 1 jane operator 394 Jan 27 16:27 id_rsa.pub -rw-rw-r-- 1 jane operator 1205 Jan 27 16:46 known_hosts For user jack: jack@host1$ ls -l $HOME/.ssh -rw-rw-r-- 1 jack engineer 394 Jan 27 16:28 authorized_keys -rw------- 1 jack engineer 1675 Jan 27 16:27 id_rsa -rw-r--r-- 1 jack engineer 394 Jan 27 16:27 id_rsa.pub -rw-rw-r-- 1 jack engineer 1205 Jan 27 16:46 known_hosts As a last ditch effort, I copied the authorized_keys, id_rsa, and id_rsa.pub from jill to jack, and changed the username in authorized_keys and id_rsa.pub with vi. It still did not work. It seems there is something different between the two users but I cannot figure out what it is.

  • SSH into remote server using Public-private keys

    - by maria
Hi, I have recently setup ssh on two linux machines (lets call them server-a, client-b). I have generated two ssh auth files on client-b machine using ssh key gen and can see both public and private files in .ssh dir. I have named them 'example' and 'example.pub'. Then I have added example.pub to sever-a's auth file. When I try to ssh into server-a it still requests a password authentication where as I want a password less login (private key on client-b is setup without password). When I try to ssh with '-v' .. get the following output: debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /Users/abc/.ssh/identity debug1: Offering public key: /Users/abc/.ssh/id_rsa debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,keyboard-interactive debug1: Offering public key: /Users/abc/.ssh/id_dsa debug2: we sent a publickey packet, wait for reply debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey,keyboard-interactive debug2: we did not send a packet, disable method debug1: Next authentication method: keyboard-interactive debug2: userauth_kbdint debug2: we sent a keyboard-interactive packet, wait for reply debug2: input_userauth_info_req debug2: input_userauth_info_req: num_prompts 1 Password: Please help.

  • Mount EC2 instance via SSH on Mac OS X

    - by darkporter
OK I just can't figure this out. I have an EC2 instance, which I'm able to SSH into just fine with: ssh -i XXXX.pem [email protected] I can even make it slick from the command line by creating a ~/.ssh/config with this in it: Host XXXX HostName XXXX User ubuntu IdentityFile ~/.ec2/XXXX.pem Which allows me to simple do a ssh XXXX with no -i option. Now, I want to mount this via SSH. I've tried MacFuse/SSHFS, MacFusion and ExpandDrive, but no luck. It's supposed to "just work" but the SSH-related command line utilities and the Keychain Access program in OS X is confusing and opaque to me. From what I've read, these GUI programs don't care about .ssh/config, they care about the Keychain. Somehow I can associate my domain name I'm connecting to with a particular "identity" private key file (.pem file) but I have no idea how. I tried this: ssh-add -K XXXX.pem Which does add to the Keychain but it's not associated to a particular domain. These GUI mounting programs I mentioned all just spin and do nothing when I try to connect passwordless. No keychain prompt, no nothing. I've pretty much given up and I'm thinking about just setting up an SMB server, but I'd rather just go over SSH since I believe it's possible.

  • ssh works fine when using public interface, but slow when using private interface

    - by Kevin M
My Linux(UbuntuEEE) to Linux(CentOS) ssh takes a long time to log in(~15 seconds) when using the private interface, but not when using the public one. I have a Linux box acting as my router. As such, it has multiple interfaces(75.xxx.xxx.xxx, 192.168.1.1). I can ssh in from the internal interface(192.168.1.65 to .1), but it will take a while. I can ssh into the public address, and it goes quickly(~1 second). I have another box that I can ssh into the inside interface from and it goes quickly. iptables is set to accept packets coming into the interface immediately. sshd's UseDNS is normally on; I get the same problem if I turn it off and restart sshd. I normally use public-key authentication; I have done a mv ~/.ssh/ ~/ssh/ and it will ask me for a password after going slowly. After logging in(using either interface), speed is quick. ssh client version(via ssh -v):OpenSSH_4.7p1 Debian-8ubuntu1.2, OpenSSL 0.9.8g 19 Oct 2007 ssh server version(via rpm -qv openssh_server):openssh-server-4.3p2-29.el5

  • Can SSH into remote server but can't SCP?

I can SSH into remote server just fine using private key authentication with prompt for passphrase. However I'm getting permission denied when I try to SCP a file using the same passphrase. Here's my output: $ scp -v [file] [user]@[remoteserver.com]:/home/[my dir] Executing: program /usr/bin/ssh host [remoteserver.com], user [user], command scp -v -t /home/[my dir] OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu7, OpenSSL 0.9.8k 25 Mar 2009 debug1: Reading configuration data /home/[my dir].ssh/config debug1: Applying options for [remoteserver.com] debug1: Reading configuration data /etc/ssh/ssh_config debug1: Applying options for * debug1: Connecting to [remoteserver.com] [[remoteserver.com]] port 22. debug1: Connection established. debug1: identity file /home/[user]/.ssh/aws_corp type -1 debug1: Remote protocol version 2.0, remote software version OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu7 debug1: match: OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu7 pat OpenSSH* debug1: Enabling compatibility mode for protocol 2.0 debug1: Local version string SSH-2.0-OpenSSH_5.3p1 Debian-3ubuntu7 debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEXINIT received debug1: kex: server->client aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: kex: client->server aes128-ctr hmac-md5 none debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REQUEST(1024<1024<8192) sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_GROUP debug1: SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_INIT sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_KEX_DH_GEX_REPLY debug1: Host '[remoteserver.com]' is known and matches the RSA host key. debug1: Found key in /home/[my dir]/.ssh/known_hosts:12 debug1: ssh_rsa_verify: signature correct debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS sent debug1: expecting SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS debug1: SSH2_MSG_NEWKEYS received debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_REQUEST sent debug1: SSH2_MSG_SERVICE_ACCEPT received debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Next authentication method: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /home/[my dir]/.ssh/aws_corp debug1: PEM_read_PrivateKey failed debug1: read PEM private key done: type <unknown> Enter passphrase for key '/home/[my dir]/.ssh/aws_corp': debug1: read PEM private key done: type RSA Connection closed by [remote server] lost connection I've searched for answers but can't find quite the same problem or am just being thick. • Setting up ssh config file with id_rsa through tunnel

    - by Rubens
I've been struggling to set up a valid configuration to open a connection with a second machine, passing through another one, and using an id_rsa (which requests me a password) to connect to the third machine. I've asked this question in another forum, but I've received no answer that could be considered very helpful. The problem, better described, goes as follows: Local machine: user1@localhost Intermediary machine: user1@inter Remote target: user2@final I'm able to do the entire connection using pseudo-tty: ssh -t inter ssh user2@final (this will ask me the password for the id_rsa file I have in machine "inter") However, for speeding things up, I'd like to set my .ssh/config file, so that I can simply connect to machine "final" using: ssh final What I've got so far -- which does not work -- is, in my .ssh/config file: Host inter User user1 HostName inter.com IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_rsa Host final User user2 HostName final.com IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_rsa_2 ProxyCommand ssh inter nc %h %p The id_rsa file is used to connect to the middle machine (this requires me no password typing), and id_rsa_2 file is used to connect to machine "final" (this one requests a password). I've tried mixing up some LocalForward and/or RemoteForward fields, and putting the id_rsa files in both first and second machines, but I could not seem to succeed with no configuration whatsoever. Hope somebody can help me here! Regards! P.S.: the thread I've tried to get some help from: http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-general-1/proxycommand-on-ssh-config-file-4175433750/

  • Using the public ssh key from local machine to access two remote users [closed]

    - by Nick
I have an new Ubuntu (Hardy 8.04) server; it has two users, Alice and Bob. Alice is listed in sudoers. I appended my public ssh key (my local machine's public key local/Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa.pub) to authorized_keys in remote_server/home/Alice/.ssh/authorized_keys, changed the permissions on Alice/.ssh/ to 700 and Alice/.ssh/authorized_keys to 600, and both the file and folder are owned my Alice. Then added I Alice to sshd_config (AllowUsers Alice). This works and I can login into Alice: ssh -v [email protected] ... debug1: Offering public key: /Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Server accepts key: pkalg ssh-rsa blen 277 debug1: Authentication succeeded (publickey). debug1: channel 0: new [client-session] debug1: Entering interactive session. Last login: Mon Mar 15 09:51:01 2010 from 123.456.789.00 I then copied the authorized_keys file remote_server/home/Alice/.ssh/authorized_keys to remote_server/home/Bob/.shh/authorized_keys and changed the permissions and ownership and added Bob to AllowUsers in sshd_config (AllowUsers Alice Bob). Now when I try to login to Bob it will not authenticate the same public key. ssh -v [email protected] ... debug1: Offering public key: /Users/nick/.ssh/id_rsa debug1: Authentications that can continue: publickey debug1: Trying private key: /Users/nick/.ssh/identity debug1: Trying private key: /Users/nick/.ssh/id_dsa debug1: No more authentication methods to try. Permission denied (publickey). Am I missing something fundamental about the way ssh works?

  • SSH password entered too many times Connection refused

    - by Ole Henrik Skogstrøm
I tried connecting to my new installed Ubuntu 12 server via SSH and I was asked for my password. (I had used "myusername@ipadress" to connect) After entering the right password a few times (with no luck; access denied) I started getting an error directly telling me that the connection was refused without asking me for a password anymore. It seems like I have managed to blacklist myself. It has been like this for about 2 hours now, is there a quick solution for this?

  • Enable Cisco ASA as an SSH Tunneling

    - by Jim
I am trying to utilize my Cisco ASA as a SSH Tunnel. I've configured this before when using a Linux server as the SSH target, however I cannot seem to get it to work with the ASA. I have configured and enabled SSH on the Cisco ASA, as well as a username that I can SSH to the console, however the SSH Tunneling feature does not work. For example, on my PC I use Putty with a Local Tunnel defined to a server behind the ASA. I should be able to (if SSH connected to the ASA) be able to access the server. See screenshot of putty. has anyone come across this before? Again this is to use my Cisco ASA as a SSH tunnel, this is not a port forwarding. -Jim

  • Cannot connect to Musicbrainz VirtualBox through SSH using Mac

    - by olovholm
I am trying to connect my mac terminal shell to a VirtualBox running the Musicbrainz server. I have configured the network through a BridgeAdapter and running ifconfig on both the host and the guest show corresponding IP addresses. I can now ping the guest, but I cannot connect through SSH. • How to use public-key ssh authentication

    - by Poma
I have 2 ubuntu 12.04 (beta) servers (node1 and node2) and want to establish passwordless root access between them. Other users should not have access to other boxes. Also note that ssh default port is changed to 220. Here's what I did: sudo -i cd /root/.ssh ssh-keygen -t rsa # with default name and empty password cat id_rsa.pub > authorized_keys then copied id_rsa & id_rsa.pub to node2 and added id_rsa.pub to authorized_keys. Both hosts have the same /root/.ssh/config file: Host node1 Hostname 1.2.3.4 Port 220 IdentityFile /root/.ssh/id_rsa Host node2 Hostname 5.6.7.8 Port 220 IdentityFile /root/.ssh/id_rsa Now the problem is that when I type ssh node2 it asks me for password. What may be the problem?
