  • segmentation fault when using pointer to pointer

    - by user3697730
    I had been trying to use a pointer to pointer in a function,but is seems that I am not doing the memory allocation correctly... My code is: #include<stdio.h> #include<math.h> #include<ctype.h> #include<stdlib.h> #include<string.h> struct list{ int data; struct list *next; }; void abc (struct list **l,struct list **l2) { *l2=NULL; l2=(struct list**)malloc( sizeof(struct list*)); (*l)->data=12; printf("%d",(*l)->data); (*l2)->next=*l2; } int main() { struct list *l,*l2; abc(&l,&l2); system("pause"); return(0); } This code compiles,but I cannot run thw program..I get a segmentation fault..What should I do?Any help would be appreciated!

  • Can somebody please explain this recursive function for me?

    - by capncoolio
    #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> void reprint(char *a[]) { if(*a) { printf("%d ",a); reprint(a+1); printf("%s ",*a); } } int main() { char *coll[] = {"C", "Objective", "like", "don't", "I", NULL}; reprint(coll); printf("\n"); return EXIT_SUCCESS; } As the more experienced will know, this prints the array in reverse. I don't quite understand how! I need help understanding what reprint(char *a[]) does. I understand pointer arithmetic to a degree, but from inserting printf's here and there, I've determined that the function increments up to the array end, and then back down to the start, only printing on the way down. However, I do not understand how it does this; all I've managed to understand by looking at the actual code is that if *a isn't NULL, then call reprint again, at the next index. Thanks guys!

  • Know the row with max characters (C)

    - by l_core
    I have wrote a program in C, to find the row with the max number of characters. Here is the code #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <ctype.h> #include <string.h> int main (int argc, char *argv[]) { char c; /* used to store the character with getc */ int c_tot = 0, c_rig = 0, c_max = 0; /* counters of characters*/ int r_tot = 0; /* counters of rows */ FILE *fptr; fptr = fopen(argv[1], "r"); if (fptr == NULL || argc != 2) { printf ("Error opening the file %s\n'", argv[1]); exit(EXIT_FAILURE); } while ( (c = getc(fptr)) != EOF) { if (c != ' ' && c != '\n') { c_tot++; c_rig++; } if (c == '\n') { r_tot++; if (c_rig > c_max) c_max = c_rig; c_rig = 0; } } printf ("Total rows: %d\n", r_tot); printf ("Total characters: %d\n", c_tot); printf ("Total characters in a row: %d\n", c_max); printf ("Average number of characters on a row: %d\n", (c_tot/r_tot)); printf ("The row with max characters is: %s\n", ??????) return 0; } I can easily find the row with the highest number of characters but how can i print that out? Thank You Folks

  • Problem with passing array of pointers to struct among functions in C

    - by karatemonkey
    The Code that follows segfaults on the call to strncpy and I can't see what I am doing wrong. I need another set of eyes to look it this. Essentially I am trying to alloc memory for a struct that is pointed to by an element in a array of pointers to struct. #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <string.h> #define MAX_POLICY_NAME_SIZE 64 #define POLICY_FILES_TO_BE_PROCESSED "SPFPolicyFilesReceivedOffline\0" typedef struct TarPolicyPair { int AppearanceTime; char *IndividualFile; char *FullPolicyFile; } PolicyPair; enum { bwlist = 0, fzacts, atksig, rules, MaxNumberFileTypes }; void SPFCreateIndividualPolicyListing(PolicyPair *IndividualPolicyPairtoCreate ) { IndividualPolicyPairtoCreate = (PolicyPair *) malloc(sizeof(PolicyPair)); IndividualPolicyPairtoCreate->IndividualFile = (char *)malloc((MAX_POLICY_NAME_SIZE * sizeof(char))); IndividualPolicyPairtoCreate->FullPolicyFile = (char *)malloc((MAX_POLICY_NAME_SIZE * sizeof(char))); IndividualPolicyPairtoCreate->AppearanceTime = 0; memset(IndividualPolicyPairtoCreate->IndividualFile, '\0', (MAX_POLICY_NAME_SIZE * sizeof(char))); memset(IndividualPolicyPairtoCreate->FullPolicyFile, '\0', (MAX_POLICY_NAME_SIZE * sizeof(char))); } void SPFCreateFullPolicyListing(SPFPolicyPair **CurrentPolicyPair, char *PolicyName, char *PolicyRename) { int i; for(i = 0; i < MaxNumberFileTypes; i++) { CreateIndividualPolicyListing((CurrentPolicyPair[i])); // segfaults on this call strncpy((*CurrentPolicyPair)[i].IndividualFile, POLICY_FILES_TO_BE_PROCESSED, (SPF_POLICY_NAME_SIZE * sizeof(char))); } } int main() { SPFPolicyPair *CurrentPolicyPair[MaxNumberFileTypes] = {NULL, NULL, NULL, NULL}; int i; CreateFullPolicyListing(&CurrentPolicyPair, POLICY_FILES_TO_BE_PROCESSED, POLICY_FILES_TO_BE_PROCESSED); return 0; }

  • int array doesnt get char values

    - by user1780004
    I am absolutely brand new at programming and im not sure how to explain what im doing here. The whole purpose of this piece is to enter values and then print them out in the same order. Now I wanna quit from entering values when pressing 'q' and so I have to scanf for chars but when I assign them back to the int array the values are not the same. Hope that makes any sense to you but in any case heres my code: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #define SIZE 5000 define flush fflush(stdin) main() { int input[SIZE] = {0},i = 0; int counter = 0; char inputs, quit; do { system("cls"); printf("Input number ('q' to quit and display numbers entered): "); flush; scanf("%c",&inputs); flush; if (inputs == 'q') quit = 'q'; else { input[i] = inputs; counter++; i++; } } while (i < SIZE && quit != 'q'); for(i = 0; i < counter; i++){ printf("%i.%i\n", i + 1, input[i]); } system("pause"); } Ive been trying to do this on my own btw and also researched some information online regarding chars but couldnt find anything that would help me. Thanks a lot in advance.

  • What's the meaning of 'char (*p)[5];'?

    - by jpmelos
    people. I'm trying to grasp the differences between these three declarations: char p[5]; char *p[5]; char (*p)[5]; I'm trying to find this out by doing some tests, because every guide of reading declarations and stuff like that has not helped me so far. I wrote this little program and it's not working (I've tried other kinds of use of the third declaration and I've ran out of options): #include <stdio.h> #include <string.h> #include <stdlib.h> int main(void) { char p1[5]; char *p2[5]; char (*p3)[5]; strcpy(p1, "dead"); p2[0] = (char *) malloc(5 * sizeof(char)); strcpy(p2[0], "beef"); p3[0] = (char *) malloc(5 * sizeof(char)); strcpy(p3[0], "char"); printf("p1 = %s\np2[0] = %s\np3[0] = %s\n", p1, p2[0], p3[0]); return 0; } The first and second works alright, and I've understood what they do. What is the meaning of the third declaration and the correct way to use it? Thank you!

  • Stream buffering issue

    - by Kolyunya
    The mod_rewrite documentation states that it is a strict requirement to disable in(out)put buffering in a rewrite program. Keeping that in mind I've written a simple program (I do know that it lacks the EOF check but this is not an issue and it saves one condition check per loop): #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> int main ( void ) { setvbuf(stdin,NULL,_IOLBF,4200); setvbuf(stdout,NULL,_IOLBF,4200); int character; while ( 42 ) { character = getchar(); if ( character == '-' ) { character = '_'; } putchar(character); } return 42 - 42; } After making some measurements I was shocked - it was over 9,000 times slower than the demo Perl script provided by the documentation: #!/usr/bin/perl $| = 1; # Turn off I/O buffering while (<STDIN>) { s/-/_/g; # Replace dashes with underscores print $_; } Now I have two related questions: Question 1. I believe that the streams may be line buffered since Apache sends a new line after each path. Am I correct? Switching my program to setvbuf(stdin,NULL,_IOLBF,4200); setvbuf(stdout,NULL,_IOLBF,4200); makes it twice as fast as Perl one. This should not hit Apache's performance, should it? Question 2. How can one write a program in C which will use unbuffered streams (like Perl one) and will perform as fast as Perl one?

  • EMSA_PSS_ENCODE with libssl

    - by luiss
    Hi I'm trying to use libssl to get some EMSA_PSS_ENCRODING through the function RSA_padding_add_PKCS1_type1 in libssl, but I can't find nor docs nor solutions, so this is the example code I've written: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <string.h> #include <openssl/rsa.h> #include <openssl/err.h> FILE *error_file; int main() { int lSize; const unsigned char *string1= (unsigned char *)"The pen is on the table"; unsigned char *stringa=NULL; int num = 64; if ((stringa = (unsigned char *)OPENSSL_malloc(num)) == NULL) fprintf(stderr,"OPENSSL_malloc error\n"); fprintf(stdout,"string1 len is %u\n",lSize); if(RSA_padding_add_PKCS1_type_1(stringa,num,string1,lSize) != 1) fprintf(stderr,"Error: RSA_PADDING error\n"); error_file = fopen("libssl.log", "w"); ERR_print_errors_fp(error_file); fclose(error_file); fprintf(stdout,(char *)stringa); fprintf(stdout,"\n"); } The problem is that I get no output in stringa, I think the function RSA_padding_add.. should be initialized, but I can't find how to do it in the few doc at the openssl site. Thanks

  • Misaligned Pointer Performance

    - by Elite Mx
    Aren't misaligned pointers (in the BEST possible case) supposed to slow down performance and in the worst case crash your program (assuming the compiler was nice enough to compile your invalid c program). Well, the following code doesn't seem to have any performance differences between the aligned and misaligned versions. Why is that? /* brutality.c */ #ifdef BRUTALITY xs = (unsigned long *) ((unsigned char *) xs + 1); #endif ... /* main.c */ #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #define size_t_max ((size_t)-1) #define max_count(var) (size_t_max / (sizeof var)) int main(int argc, char *argv[]) { unsigned long sum, *xs, *itr, *xs_end; size_t element_count = max_count(*xs) >> 4; xs = malloc(element_count * (sizeof *xs)); if(!xs) exit(1); xs_end = xs + element_count - 1; sum = 0; for(itr = xs; itr < xs_end; itr++) *itr = 0; #include "brutality.c" itr = xs; while(itr < xs_end) sum += *itr++; printf("%lu\n", sum); /* we could free the malloc-ed memory here */ /* but we are almost done */ exit(0); } Compiled and tested on two separate machines using gcc -pedantic -Wall -O0 -std=c99 main.c for i in {0..9}; do time ./a.out; done

  • Difference between the address space of parent process and its child process in Linux?

    - by abbas1707
    Hi, I am confused about it. I have read that when a child is created by a parent process, child gets a copy of its parent's address space. What it means here by copy? If i use code below, then it prints same addresses of variable 'a' which is on heap in all cases. i.e in case of child and parent. So what is happening here? #include <sys/types.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <unistd.h> #include <stdlib.h> int main () { pid_t pid; int *a = (int *)malloc(4); printf ("heap pointer %p\n", a); pid = fork(); if (pid < 0) { fprintf (stderr, "Fork Failed"); exit(-1); } else if (pid == 0) { printf ("Child\n"); printf ("in child heap pointer %p\n", a); } else { wait (NULL); printf ("Child Complete\n"); printf ("in parent heap pointer %p\n", a); exit(0); } }

  • Can I access type int (*)[] with [][]?

    - by Framester
    Hi coming from this question "What does (int (*)[])var1 stand for?" I tried to access the result of the cast like a multidimensional array. But I get following error: "assignment from incompatible pointer type" followed by a segmentation fault. I tried also some other variations, but none of them worked. How can I access the elements in var1 in the function example directly? Thank you! #include <stdlib.h> int i(int n,int m,int var1[n][m]) { var1[0][0]=5; return var1[0][0]; } int example() { int *var1 = malloc(100); // works int var2; var2 = i(10,10,(int (*)[])var1); printf("var2=%i",var2); //doesn't work I int *var3; var3=(int (*)[])var1; //"assignment from incompatible pointer type" printf("var3[0][0]=%i",var3[0][0]); //doesn't work II int *var4; var4=var1; printf("var4[0][0]=%i",var4[0][0]); //" error: subscripted value is neither array nor pointer" //doesn't work III int **var5; var5=var1; printf("var5[0][0]=%i",var5[0][0]); // assignment from incompatible pointer type return(1); } int main(){ int a; a=example(); return(1); }

  • Second user-defined function returns garbage value?

    - by mintyfresh
    I have been teaching myself C programming, and I've come to a difficult point with using variables across functions. When, I compile this program and run it, the function askBirthYear returns the correct value, but sayAgeInYears returns either 0 or a garbage value. I believe it has something to do with how I used the variable birthYear, but I'm stumped on how to fix the issue. Here is the code: #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> int askBirthYear(int); void sayAgeInYears(int); int birthYear; int main(void) { askBirthYear(birthYear); sayAgeInYears(birthYear); return EXIT_SUCCESS; } void askBirthYear(int birthYear) { printf("Hello! In what year were you born?\n"); scanf("%d", &birthYear); printf("Your birth year is %d.\n", birthYear); return birthYear; } void sayAgeInYears(int birthYear) { int age; age = 2012 - birthYear; printf("You are %d years old.\n", age); }

Today is a beautiful day!!\t\n"; int i = nextword(str); while(i != -1) { printf("%s\n",&(str[i])); i = nextword(NULL); } return 0; } int nextword(char *str) { // create two static variables - these stay around across calls static char *s; static int nextindex; int thisindex; // reset the static variables if (str != NULL) { s = str; thisindex = 0; // TODO: advance this index past any leading spaces while (s[thisindex]=='\n' || s[thisindex]=='\t' || s[thisindex]==' ' ) thisindex++; } else { // set the return value to be the nextindex thisindex = nextindex; } // if we aren't done with the string... if (thisindex != -1) { nextindex = thisindex; // TODO: two things // 1: place a '\0' after the current word // 2: advance nextindex to the beginning // of the next word while (s[nextindex] != ' ' && s[nextindex] != '\0') nextindex++; str[nextindex] = '\0'; nextindex++; } return thisindex; } The goal of the program is to print each word in the string str[] to the console on a new line. I am a beginning programmer and this is an assignment so I must use this type of format (no string library allowed). I just would like to know where I went wrong and how I can fix it.

    hi sir i want to draw a points.the following code is work good but the problem is than when i drag the mouse button, if i move slow working good but if i move the curser fast they cannot made continues line.please what is the solution...? #include <iostream> #include <GL/glut.h> #include <GL/glu.h> #include <stdlib.h> void first() { glPushMatrix(); glTranslatef(1,01,01); glScalef(1, 1, 1); glColor3f(0, 1, 0); glBegin(GL_QUADS); glVertex2f(0.8, 0.6); glVertex2f(0.6, 0.6); glVertex2f(0.6, 0.8); glVertex2f(0.8, 0.8); glEnd(); glPopMatrix(); glFlush(); } void display (void) { glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT); //store color of each pixels of a frame glClearColor(0, 0, 0, 0);// screen color //glFlush(); } void drag (int x, int y) { { y=500-y; //x=500-x; glPointSize(5); glColor3f(1.0,1.0,1.0); glBegin(GL_POINTS); glVertex2f(x,y+2); glEnd(); glutSwapBuffers(); glFlush(); } } void reshape (int w, int h){} void init (void) { glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT); //store color of each pixels of a frame glClearColor(0, 0, 0, 0); glViewport(0,0,500,500); glMatrixMode(GL_PROJECTION); glLoadIdentity(); glOrtho(0.0, 500.0, 0.0, 500.0, 1.0, -1.0); glMatrixMode(GL_MODELVIEW); glLoadIdentity(); } void mouse_button (int button, int state, int x, int y) { if (button == GLUT_LEFT_BUTTON && state == GLUT_DOWN) { drag(x,y); first(); } //else if (button == GLUT_MIDDLE_BUTTON && state == GLUT_DOWN) //{ // //} else if (button == GLUT_RIGHT_BUTTON && state == GLUT_DOWN) { exit(0); } } int main (int argc, char**argv) { glutInit (&argc, argv); //initialize the program. glutInitDisplayMode (GLUT_SINGLE); //set up a basic display buffer (only singular for now) glutInitWindowSize (500,500); //set whe width and height of the window glutInitWindowPosition (100, 100); //set the position of the window glutCreateWindow ("A basic OpenGL Window"); //set the caption for the window glutMotionFunc(drag); //glutMouseFunc(mouse_button); init(); glutDisplayFunc (display);//call the display function to draw our world glutMainLoop(); //initialize the OpenGL loop cycle return 0; }

  • Veewee, Vagrant, Puppet, Erlang and RabbitMQ

    - by Tobias
    I am kinda stuck with a problem I am trying to wrap my head around for days now. Here is what I am doing: By using Veewee, I am creating a VirtualBox image and then I create a Vagrant box from it. See here, here Finally I run puppet from Vagrant to install RabbitMQ, see here. Veewee, Vagrant and VirtualBox all run on MacOS X 10.7.4. The vagrant box itself is CentOS 6.2. This worked fine for quite some time until I was recreating the VirtualBox image a couple of days ago. During installation of the rabbitmq-plugins during my puppet run I now get the following error: /Stage[main]/Rabbitmq/Exec[rabbitmq-plugins]/returns: erlexec: HOME must be set My RabbitMQ puppet configuration can be found on my GitHub repo for that project, but here is the most important part: $version = "2.8.7" $url = "http://www.rabbitmq.com/releases/rabbitmq-server/v${version}/rabbitmq-server-${version}-1.noarch.rpm" package{"erlang": ensure => "present", } package{"rabbitmq-server": provider => "rpm", source => $url, require => Package["erlang"] } exec{"rabbitmq-plugins": path => "/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/bin", command => "rabbitmq-plugins enable rabbitmq_management", require => Package["rabbitmq-server"] } My additional repositories, e.g. epel, are defined in veewees postinstall.sh right at the top of the file. Finally, this is what I get when I do '/etc/init.d/rabbitmq-server status' [{pid,2834}, {running_applications,[{rabbit,"RabbitMQ","2.8.7"}, {ssl,"Erlang/OTP SSL application","4.1.6"}, {public_key,"Public key infrastructure","0.13"}, {crypto,"CRYPTO version 2","2.0.4"}, {mnesia,"MNESIA CXC 138 12","4.5"}, {os_mon,"CPO CXC 138 46","2.2.7"}, {sasl,"SASL CXC 138 11","2.1.10"}, {stdlib,"ERTS CXC 138 10","1.17.5"}, {kernel,"ERTS CXC 138 10","2.14.5"}]}, {os,{unix,linux}}, {erlang_version,"Erlang R14B04 (erts-5.8.5) [source] [64-bit] [rq:1] [async-threads:30] [kernel-poll:true]\n"}, {memory,[{total,24993120}, {processes,10328496}, {processes_used,10321296}, {system,14664624}, {atom,1175905}, {atom_used,1143841}, {binary,17192}, {code,11416020}, {ets,766168}]}, {vm_memory_high_watermark,0.4}, {vm_memory_limit,205851852}, {disk_free_limit,1000000000}, {disk_free,7089795072}, {file_descriptors,[{total_limit,924}, {total_used,4}, {sockets_limit,829}, {sockets_used,2}]}, {processes,[{limit,1048576},{used,131}]}, {run_queue,0}, {uptime,6}] Sources in the web suggest, that I have to set HOME. Of course I was logging into the box if HOME was set, for user vagrant it was '/home/vagrant' and for root it was 'root'. As always, any hints/ideas/suggestions/assumptions are more than welcome. Thanks a lot! Cheers, Tobi

  • Espeak SAPI/dll usage on Windows ?

    - by Quandary
    Question: I am trying to use the espeak text-to-speech engine. So for I got it working wounderfully on linux (code below). Now I wanted to port this basic program to windows, too, but it's nearly impossible... Part of the problem is that the windows dll only allows for AUDIO_OUTPUT_SYNCHRONOUS, which means it requires a callback, but I can't figure out how to play the audio from the callback... First it crashed, then I realized, I need a callback function, now I get the data in the callback function, but I don't know how to play it... as it is neither a wav file nor plays automatically as on Linux. The sourceforge site is rather useless, because it basically says use the SAPI version, but then there is no example on how to use the sapi espeak dll... Anyway, here's my code, can anybody help? #ifdef __cplusplus #include <cstdio> #include <cstdlib> #include <cstring> else #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <string.h> endif include include //#include "speak_lib.h" include "espeak/speak_lib.h" // libespeak-dev: /usr/include/espeak/speak_lib.h // apt-get install libespeak-dev // apt-get install libportaudio-dev // g++ -o mine mine.cpp -lespeak // g++ -o mine mine.cpp -I/usr/include/espeak/ -lespeak // gcc -o mine mine.cpp -I/usr/include/espeak/ -lespeak char voicename[40]; int samplerate; int quiet = 0; static char genders[4] = {' ','M','F',' '}; //const char *data_path = "/usr/share/"; // /usr/share/espeak-data/ const char *data_path = NULL; // use default path for espeak-data int strrcmp(const char *s, const char *sub) { int slen = strlen(s); int sublen = strlen(sub); return memcmp(s + slen - sublen, sub, sublen); } char * strrcpy(char *dest, const char *source) { // Pre assertions assert(dest != NULL); assert(source != NULL); assert(dest != source); // tk: parentheses while((*dest++ = *source++)) ; return(--dest); } const char* GetLanguageVoiceName(const char* pszShortSign) { #define LANGUAGE_LENGTH 30 static char szReturnValue[LANGUAGE_LENGTH] ; memset(szReturnValue, 0, LANGUAGE_LENGTH); for (int i = 0; pszShortSign[i] != '\0'; ++i) szReturnValue[i] = (char) tolower(pszShortSign[i]); const espeak_VOICE **voices; espeak_VOICE voice_select; voices = espeak_ListVoices(NULL); const espeak_VOICE *v; for(int ix=0; (v = voices[ix]) != NULL; ix++) { if( !strrcmp( v->languages, szReturnValue) ) { strcpy(szReturnValue, v->name); return szReturnValue; } } // End for strcpy(szReturnValue, "default"); return szReturnValue; } // End function getvoicename void ListVoices() { const espeak_VOICE **voices; espeak_VOICE voice_select; voices = espeak_ListVoices(NULL); const espeak_VOICE *v; for(int ix=0; (v = voices[ix]) != NULL; ix++) { printf("Shortsign: %s\n", v->languages); printf("age: %d\n", v->age); printf("gender: %c\n", genders[v->gender]); printf("name: %s\n", v->name); printf("\n\n"); } // End for } // End function getvoicename int main() { printf("Hello World!\n"); const char* szVersionInfo = espeak_Info(NULL); printf("Espeak version: %s\n", szVersionInfo); samplerate = espeak_Initialize(AUDIO_OUTPUT_PLAYBACK,0,data_path,0); strcpy(voicename, "default"); // espeak --voices strcpy(voicename, "german"); strcpy(voicename, GetLanguageVoiceName("DE")); if(espeak_SetVoiceByName(voicename) != EE_OK) { printf("Espeak setvoice error...\n"); } static char word[200] = "Hello World" ; strcpy(word, "TV-fäns aufgepasst, es ist 20 Uhr 15.   • Threading across multiple files

    - by Zach M.
    My program is reading in files and using thread to compute the highest prime number, when I put a print statement into the getNum() function my numbers are printing out. However, it seems to just lag no matter how many threads I input. Each file has 1 million integers in it. Does anyone see something apparently wrong with my code? Basically the code is giving each thread 1000 integers to check before assigning a new thread. I am still a C noobie and am just learning the ropes of threading. My code is a mess right now because I have been switching things around constantly. #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <time.h> #include <string.h> #include <pthread.h> #include <math.h> #include <semaphore.h> //Global variable declaration char *file1 = "primes1.txt"; char *file2 = "primes2.txt"; char *file3 = "primes3.txt"; char *file4 = "primes4.txt"; char *file5 = "primes5.txt"; char *file6 = "primes6.txt"; char *file7 = "primes7.txt"; char *file8 = "primes8.txt"; char *file9 = "primes9.txt"; char *file10 = "primes10.txt"; char **fn; //file name variable int numberOfThreads; int *highestPrime = NULL; int fileArrayNum = 0; int loop = 0; int currentFile = 0; sem_t semAccess; sem_t semAssign; int prime(int n)//check for prime number, return 1 for prime 0 for nonprime { int i; for(i = 2; i <= sqrt(n); i++) if(n % i == 0) return(0); return(1); } int getNum(FILE* file) { int number; char* tempS = malloc(20 *sizeof(char)); fgets(tempS, 20, file); tempS[strlen(tempS)-1] = '\0'; number = atoi(tempS); free(tempS);//free memory for later call return(number); } void* findPrimality(void *threadnum) //main thread function to find primes { int tNum = (int)threadnum; int checkNum; char *inUseFile = NULL; int x=1; FILE* file; while(currentFile < 10){ if(inUseFile == NULL){//inUseFIle being used to check if a file is still being read sem_wait(&semAccess);//critical section inUseFile = fn[currentFile]; sem_post(&semAssign); file = fopen(inUseFile, "r"); while(!feof(file)){ if(x % 1000 == 0 && tNum !=1){ //go for 1000 integers and then wait sem_wait(&semAssign); } checkNum = getNum(file); /* * * * * I think the issue is here * * * */ if(checkNum > highestPrime[tNum]){ if(prime(checkNum)){ highestPrime[tNum] = checkNum; } } x++; } fclose(file); inUseFile = NULL; } currentFile++; } } int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { if(argc != 2){ //checks for number of arguements being passed printf("To many ARGS\n"); return(-1); } else{//Sets thread cound to user input checking for correct number of threads numberOfThreads = atoi(argv[1]); if(numberOfThreads < 1 || numberOfThreads > 10){ printf("To many threads entered\n"); return(-1); } time_t preTime, postTime; //creating time variables int i; fn = malloc(10 * sizeof(char*)); //create file array and initialize fn[0] = file1; fn[1] = file2; fn[2] = file3; fn[3] = file4; fn[4] = file5; fn[5] = file6; fn[6] = file7; fn[7] = file8; fn[8] = file9; fn[9] = file10; sem_init(&semAccess, 0, 1); //initialize semaphores sem_init(&semAssign, 0, numberOfThreads); highestPrime = malloc(numberOfThreads * sizeof(int)); //create an array to store each threads highest number for(loop = 0; loop < numberOfThreads; loop++){//set initial values to 0 highestPrime[loop] = 0; } pthread_t calculationThread[numberOfThreads]; //thread to do the work preTime = time(NULL); //start the clock for(i = 0; i < numberOfThreads; i++){ pthread_create(&calculationThread[i], NULL, findPrimality, (void *)i); } for(i = 0; i < numberOfThreads; i++){ pthread_join(calculationThread[i], NULL); } for(i = 0; i < numberOfThreads; i++){ printf("this is a prime number: %d \n", highestPrime[i]); } postTime= time(NULL); printf("Wall time: %ld seconds\n", (long)(postTime - preTime)); } } Yes I am trying to find the highest number over all. So I have made some head way the last few hours, rescucturing the program as spudd said, currently I am getting a segmentation fault due to my use of structures, I am trying to save the largest individual primes in the struct while giving them the right indices. This is the revised code. So in short what the first thread is doing is creating all the threads and giving them access points to a very large integer array which they will go through and find prime numbers, I want to implement semaphores around the while loop so that while they are executing every 2000 lines or the end they update a global prime number. #include <stdio.h> #include <stdlib.h> #include <time.h> #include <string.h> #include <pthread.h> #include <math.h> #include <semaphore.h> //Global variable declaration char *file1 = "primes1.txt"; char *file2 = "primes2.txt"; char *file3 = "primes3.txt"; char *file4 = "primes4.txt"; char *file5 = "primes5.txt"; char *file6 = "primes6.txt"; char *file7 = "primes7.txt"; char *file8 = "primes8.txt"; char *file9 = "primes9.txt"; char *file10 = "primes10.txt"; int numberOfThreads; int entries[10000000]; int entryIndex = 0; int fileCount = 0; char** fileName; int largestPrimeNumber = 0; //Register functions int prime(int n); int getNum(FILE* file); void* findPrimality(void *threadNum); void* assign(void *num); typedef struct package{ int largestPrime; int startingIndex; int numberCount; }pack; //Beging main code block int main(int argc, char* argv[]) { if(argc != 2){ //checks for number of arguements being passed printf("To many threads!!\n"); return(-1); } else{ //Sets thread cound to user input checking for correct number of threads numberOfThreads = atoi(argv[1]); if(numberOfThreads < 1 || numberOfThreads > 10){ printf("To many threads entered\n"); return(-1); } int threadPointer[numberOfThreads]; //Pointer array to point to entries time_t preTime, postTime; //creating time variables int i; fileName = malloc(10 * sizeof(char*)); //create file array and initialize fileName[0] = file1; fileName[1] = file2; fileName[2] = file3; fileName[3] = file4; fileName[4] = file5; fileName[5] = file6; fileName[6] = file7; fileName[7] = file8; fileName[8] = file9; fileName[9] = file10; FILE* filereader; int currentNum; for(i = 0; i < 10; i++){ filereader = fopen(fileName[i], "r"); while(!feof(filereader)){ char* tempString = malloc(20 *sizeof(char)); fgets(tempString, 20, filereader); tempString[strlen(tempString)-1] = '\0'; entries[entryIndex] = atoi(tempString); entryIndex++; free(tempString); } } //sem_init(&semAccess, 0, 1); //initialize semaphores //sem_init(&semAssign, 0, numberOfThreads); time_t tPre, tPost; pthread_t coordinate; tPre = time(NULL); pthread_create(&coordinate, NULL, assign, (void**)numberOfThreads); pthread_join(coordinate, NULL); tPost = time(NULL); } } void* findPrime(void* pack_array) { pack* currentPack= pack_array; int lp = currentPack->largestPrime; int si = currentPack->startingIndex; int nc = currentPack->numberCount; int i; int j = 0; for(i = si; i < nc; i++){ while(j < 2000 || i == (nc-1)){ if(prime(entries[i])){ if(entries[i] > lp) lp = entries[i]; } j++; } } return (void*)currentPack; } void* assign(void* num) { int y = (int)num; int i; int count = 10000000/y; int finalCount = count + (10000000%y); int sIndex = 0; pack pack_array[(int)num]; pthread_t workers[numberOfThreads]; //thread to do the workers for(i = 0; i < y; i++){ if(i == (y-1)){ pack_array[i].largestPrime = 0; pack_array[i].startingIndex = sIndex; pack_array[i].numberCount = finalCount; } pack_array[i].largestPrime = 0; pack_array[i].startingIndex = sIndex; pack_array[i].numberCount = count; pthread_create(&workers[i], NULL, findPrime, (void *)&pack_array[i]); sIndex += count; } for(i = 0; i< y; i++) pthread_join(workers[i], NULL); } //Functions int prime(int n)//check for prime number, return 1 for prime 0 for nonprime { int i; for(i = 2; i <= sqrt(n); i++) if(n % i == 0) return(0); return(1); }

  • Flood fill algorithm for Game of Go

    - by Jackson Borghi
    I'm having a hell of a time trying to figure out how to make captured stones disappear. I've read everywhere that I should use the flood fill algorithm, but I haven't had any luck with that so far. Any help would be amazing! Here is my code: package Go; import static java.lang.Math.*; import static stdlib.StdDraw.*; import java.awt.Color; public class Go2 { public static Color opposite(Color player) { if (player == WHITE) { return BLACK; } return WHITE; } public static void drawGame(Color[][] board) { Color[][][] unit = new Color[400][19][19]; for (int h = 0; h < 400; h++) { for (int x = 0; x < 19; x++) { for (int y = 0; y < 19; y++) { unit[h][x][y] = YELLOW; } } } setXscale(0, 19); setYscale(0, 19); clear(YELLOW); setPenColor(BLACK); line(0, 0, 0, 19); line(19, 19, 19, 0); line(0, 19, 19, 19); line(0, 0, 19, 0); for (double i = 0; i < 19; i++) { line(0.0, i, 19, i); line(i, 0.0, i, 19); } for (int x = 0; x < 19; x++) { for (int y = 0; y < 19; y++) { if (board[x][y] != YELLOW) { setPenColor(board[x][y]); filledCircle(x, y, 0.47); setPenColor(GRAY); circle(x, y, 0.47); } } } int h = 0; } public static void main(String[] args) { int px; int py; Color[][] temp = new Color[19][19]; Color[][] board = new Color[19][19]; Color player = WHITE; for (int i = 0; i < 19; i++) { for (int h = 0; h < 19; h++) { board[i][h] = YELLOW; temp[i][h] = YELLOW; } } while (true) { drawGame(board); while (!mousePressed()) { } px = (int) round(mouseX()); py = (int) round(mouseY()); board[px][py] = player; while (mousePressed()) { } floodFill(px, py, player, board, temp); System.out.print("XXXXX = "+ temp[px][py]); if (checkTemp(temp, board, px, py)) { for (int x = 0; x < 19; x++) { for (int y = 0; y < 19; y++) { if (temp[x][y] == GRAY) { board[x][y] = YELLOW; } } } } player = opposite(player); } } private static boolean checkTemp(Color[][] temp, Color[][] board, int x, int y) { if (x < 19 && x > -1 && y < 19 && y > -1) { if (temp[x + 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x - 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x][y - 1] == YELLOW || temp[x][y + 1] == YELLOW) { return false; } } if (x == 18) { if (temp[x - 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x][y - 1] == YELLOW || temp[x][y + 1] == YELLOW) { return false; } } if (y == 18) { if (temp[x + 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x - 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x][y - 1] == YELLOW) { return false; } } if (y == 0) { if (temp[x + 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x - 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x][y + 1] == YELLOW) { return false; } } if (x == 0) { if (temp[x + 1][y] == YELLOW || temp[x][y - 1] == YELLOW || temp[x][y + 1] == YELLOW) { return false; } } else { if (x < 19) { if (temp[x + 1][y] == GRAY) { checkTemp(temp, board, x + 1, y); } } if (x >= 0) { if (temp[x - 1][y] == GRAY) { checkTemp(temp, board, x - 1, y); } } if (y < 19) { if (temp[x][y + 1] == GRAY) { checkTemp(temp, board, x, y + 1); } } if (y >= 0) { if (temp[x][y - 1] == GRAY) { checkTemp(temp, board, x, y - 1); } } } return true; } private static void floodFill(int x, int y, Color player, Color[][] board, Color[][] temp) { if (board[x][y] != player) { return; } else { temp[x][y] = GRAY; System.out.println("x = " + x + " y = " + y); if (x < 19) { floodFill(x + 1, y, player, board, temp); } if (x >= 0) { floodFill(x - 1, y, player, board, temp); } if (y < 19) { floodFill(x, y + 1, player, board, temp); } if (y >= 0) { floodFill(x, y - 1, player, board, temp); } } } }
