• Should my blog be directly on my website?

  I have my newly launched website at www.slicify.com (redirects to a secure subdomain). I currently have a separate blog on WordPress: slicify.wordpress.com for a couple of reasons: I don't really want to mix my site code (it's a complex ecommerce site written in ASP.Net) with blog code, for ease of maintenance etc. WordPress is already great at blogs - seems silly to reinvent the wheel by trying to integrate blog functionality into my site However is keeping my blog on a separate domain going to hurt me in terms of PageRank or traffic? FWIW: while it's early days, I can see from Google Analytics that a good deal of referral traffic is already coming from my WordPress site to my main site, so at least that seems to be drawing potential users in.

• several subdomains pointing to one folder. fasthosts problem

  I have a asp.net website (e.g. www.website.com). The idea is that you will go to the url 'yourname.website.com' and my site will request the name from the sub domain, process it and change the content accordingly. So, I purchased my fasthosts hosting package and created a sub domain which points to a folder within my site. e.g. 'www.website.com/folder'. However, when i now go to the url 'yourname.website.com' it is immediately redirected to 'website.com/folder'. this means I cannot request the subdomain from the url because it has been lost. I have tried contacting these guys but they don't understand and keep going on about some sort of redirect script (although i don't see how any further redirects can solve my problem). Is there something I am missing here? Any suggests or help would be much appreciated!

The blog serves to bring traffic and the store is how we monetize the site. We have them designed to appear as one large site, but I know google sees them as two sites. Here is how the subdomains look: www.example.com (store) blog.example.com (blog) I believe I can configure analytics to use subdomain tracking as explained here: http://support.google.com/googleanalytics/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=55524 But my question is whether this will cause google to see our 2 subdomains as one larger domain for SEO purposes. In other words, is there any relationship to how you configure google analytics and how google indexes and ranks your website(s) and pages? Is there anything I need to do in anaytics or webmaster tools to make google aware that these two subdomains work together as one website? Thanks! Sam

  Possible Duplicate: Subdomain versus subdirectory One of our web properties is doing quite well without any additional links being created on the site, and our link inventory is tightly managed - no user-generated links. To introduce a community aspect to the site, we want to implement a q&a forum. Once in place, new links will populate our link inventory with keywords that are not necessarily targeted to the site. With the q&a on a sub-domain, would that not affect the main site's rankings? What's the best approach for this?

• Find visitors to multiple subdomains on single visit with Google Analytics

  I'm working on a site that has quite the backlog of Google Analytics data for their site network. One of our big questions is whether people enter on one site and move to another (and if so, of course, how do these visits differ from single site visits). The hostname report (Audience Network Hostname) shows all the host names and I've setup Advanced Segments to get site-specific data. That all works great, but I'm really having a hard time figuring out how to find visits to multiple sites as defined by visiting more than one subdomain or the root site and one or more subdomains. I do see that other hostnames somehow come through when I apply one of the segments to the host name report. Which I can't say I expected. Is that the best way to see if people are visiting 2+ sites?

I need different addresses to go to their respective folders. Can someone please give me better instructions on how to set that up using webmin?   Hello everyone! I have bought domain1.me from GoDaddy... (yeah, I know... but ME domain registrars seemed quite hard to find...) I'm mainly hosted at 1and1. I have registered subdomain sub1.domain1.me and redirected it to my 1and1 account. That should eventually work fine. Then I have registered sub2.domain1.me and tried to redirect it to a box at home. It works #1 when for HTTP. I can access SSH server without any problem when I use the IP directly, but not when using sub2.domain1.me:22. The way I see this, they (GoDaddy) are redirecting only on port 80 (why would they?). I have looked at 1and1 forwarding too and they ask for an URI starting with http so I guess that's the same behavior. What are you guys doing to be able to host stuff from home (HTTP, SSH, SVN, Git, etc. etc.) using a domain name to prevent everyone to have to remember your IP??? Heeeelp! Thanks!

  Currently my site supports regular payment options (User is taken to Payment Gateway/PG website). Now I'm trying to implement "seamless" PG integration. I need SSL for this. I'm having a dedicated server with 5 static IPs from Hostgator/HG. options: I take SSL for www.my_domain.com. According to HG, I need to change IP of main site as current IP is not really dedicated as it is being shared by cpanel etc. So They need to bind another dedicated IP to main domain for SSL to work. This would required DNS change for main website and hence cause few hours downtime (which is ok). I've noticed that most of the e-commerce websites are using subdomains like secure.my_domain.com for ssl/https. This sounds like a better approach. But I've got few doubts in this case: a) Would I need to re-register with existing PGs (Paypal, Google Checkout, Authorize.net) if I switch to subdomain? Re-registering is not an option for me. b) Would DNS change be required for www.my_domain.com in this case. This confusion arose because of following reply from HG : "If the sub domain secure.my_domain.com is added to an existing cPanel it will use the IP for that cPanel so as long as it is a Dedicated IP that will be fine. If secure.my_domain.com gets setup as its own cPanel it will need to be assigned to a Dedicated IP which would have a DNS change involved.". Please suggest?

When I ping on a subdomain that is not configured in apache, the host is not found. I don't understand why apache configuration would affect DNS resolution like this? But with this (I believe Centos) server that is one of my clients, I'm not understanding what I'm doing wrong.   I've just set up a site via 1and1 and have run into an issue, I want to accomplish the simple task of redirecting the root domain to the www sub domain however due to complications I cant seam to find a way to get it to work. I'm on a Microsoft (asp.net) package so can't use .htaccess, also the IIS server they have doesn't have the URL redirect module installed (so can't use <rewrite> in web.config). They have built in HTTP forwarding options however if I set the root domain to redirect to the www sub domain it just infinitely redirects. Hopefully there is some obvious option/method I've missed during the past two days of searching!
