• Sun permgen & JRockit garbage collection

  In the Sun JVM, classes that are loaded by the class loader are put in permgen space and never gc'd. (Unless the class loader goes out of scope) It's my understanding that JRockit puts that same data on the heap instead. Is that data then subject to garbage collection? Thanks.

• Running a lot of jobs with sun grid engine

  I want to run a very large number (~30000) of jobs with Sun Grid Engine. I can theoretically, perform 30000 times the "qsub" command to submit jobs. However, I am afraid that will be too much. Is there a better way to do it? (i.e. from a file) Or otherwise, do you think it will work nonetheless? Thank you

• How do I debug a cluster running Microsoft server 2003?

  I'm sole developer of a complex critical software system, written in Visual C++ 2005. It's deployed on a classical Microsoft cluster scenario (active/passive), that has Windows Server 2003 R2. If a server A goes down, the other one (B) starts and take the ownership of its duties. You have to know that: Both servers have the same Microsoft patches/fixes, same hardware, same everything. Both servers use the same memory storage (a RAID-6 through fiber channel). This software has a main module that launches the peripheral modules. if a peripheral module crashes, the main module restarts it. When I switch the application in one of the two servers (let's say the B server) two of the peripheral modules of the main applications just started to crash apparently without reason about 2 seconds after the start of the peripheral module. What could I do to analyze/inspect/resolve this weird situation?

• Anyone know where I can download a copy of Sun Java System Active Server Pages 4.0.3 for Solaris

  I've contacted Sun regarding this and they have told me that the download is no longer available as Active Server Pages 4.0.3 is now End Of Life. We need to upgrade our server to 4.0.3 to acheive PCI-DSS compliance. Anyone know of a site where I can download older copies of Sun files? Sun offer 4.0.1 and 4.0.2 to download but not 4.0.3 which is going to cause problems come October when Visa stops accepting transactions from non PCI compliant servers. If Sun kept their naming system consistent across versions, the file would be called "sjsasp403-sol-sparc.tar". I know the real solution is to upgrade every site on the server to use a different server language, i.e. PHP, and in the long term, this is our goal but we have over 100 sites requiring upgrading and its not a viable solution to get this done before October.

• Searching for cluster computation framework

  I have a library, written in C#, containing one method: Response CalculateSomething(Request); The execution time of this method is relatively large, and there are a lot of responses that should be processed. I want to use a "cluster", spread this DLL to different machines (nodes) in this "cluster" and write some controller that will distribute responses to the nodes. There should be mechanism that perevent losing task because of node crush, load balancing. Can someone suggest framework that addresses this issue? P.S. There is a framework Qizmt written in C# but I think MapReduce is not good for the above scenario

• Using the C Cluster library in Visual C++.

  Right so i'm trying to use a C library in C++, never actually done this before i thought it would be a case of declaring the header includes under a extern "C" and setting the compile as flag to "default" but i'm still getting linker errors and think that the header file might have to be complied as a DLL. I have no idea really. Is it the library that's the problem or is it me? There are some make files in the cluster-1.47\src, but i don't know how or if they relate to "cluster.h".   I'm setting up a system to keep Java in our office up to date. Everyone has all different versions of Java, many of them old and insecure, and some dating back as far as 1.4. I have a System Center Essentials server which can push out and silently run a .msi file, and I've already tested that it can install the latest Java. But old versions (such as 1.4) aren't removed by the installer, so I need to uninstall them. Everyone is running Windows XP. The neat coincidence is that Sun just got bought by Oracle and Oracle has now changed all the instances of "Sun" to "Oracle" in Java. So, I can conveniently not have to worry about uninstalling the latest Java, because I can just do a search and uninstall all Sun Java programs. Reading through the script, I don't understand everything, but I don't know why it is trying to run pieces of registry keys as programs. What is wrong with the batch script? How can I fix it, so that I can move on to somehow turning it into a MSI and deploying it to everyone to clean up this office? Or alternatively, can you suggest a better solution or existing MSI file to do what I need? I just want to make sure to get all the old versions of Java off of everyone's computers, since I've heard of exploits that cause web pages to load using old versions of Java and I want to avoid those.

  I am using SUN storage and recently upgraded/refreshed my ISCSI LUN storage. We have replicated old storage to new storage and attached to our servers. • Solution 6 : Kill a Non-Clustered Process during Two-Node Cluster Failover

  Using Visual Studio 2008 and C#, I developed a windows service A and deployed it to two nodes of a windows server 2008 failover cluster. The service A is part of the failover cluster service, which means, when failover occurs at node1, the cluster service will failover the windows service A from node 1 to node 2. One of the tasks implemented by the windows service A is to start, monitor or kill a process B. The process B is installed to the two nodes but is not part of the failover cluster service. When a failover occurs at node1, the cluster service does not failover the process B from node 1 to node 2, and the process B continues running at node1. The requirement is: When failover occurs at node1, we want the process B running at node1 gets killed, but we do not want the process B be part of the failover cluster service. The first idea that pops up immediately is to put some code in an event handler triggered by the failover in the windows service A. The failover effect to the windows service A is similar to using the task manager to kill the process of the windows service A, but there is no event in windows service that can be triggered by killing the process of the window service. The events related to terminating a windows service are OnStop and OnShutDown, but killing the process of windows service A triggers neither of them. The OnStop event can only be triggered by stopping the windows service using Services Control Manager or Services Management Console. Apparently, the first idea is not feasible. The second idea that emerges is to put code into the OnStart event handler of the windows service A. When failover occurs at node 1, the windows service A is killed at node 1 and started at node 2. During the starting, the windows service A at node 2 kills the process B that is running at node 1. It is a workaround and works very well. The C# code implementation within the OnStart event handler is as following: 1.       Capture server names of the two nodes from App.config 2.       Determine server name of the remote node. 3.       Kill the process B running on the remote node.   Yesterday seems to be it’s too hot inside the crust of Sun and it resulted in an big explosion!! An explosion that was spectacular to watch and the event was something like never seen before : a solar flare, a coronal wave, a filament eruption, a coronal mass ejection, coronal rain and a coronal mass ejection to name a few. • New Solaris Cluster!

  We released Oracle Solaris Cluster 4.1 recently. OSC offers both High Availability (HA) and also Scalable Services capabilities. HA delivers automatic restart of software on the same cluster node and/or automatic failover from a failed node to a working cluster node. Software and support is available for both x86 and SPARC systems. The Scalable Services features manage multiple cluster nodes all providing a load-balanced service such as web servers or app serves. OSC 4.1 includes the ability to recover services from software failures, failure of hardware components such as DIMMs, CPUs, and I/O cards, a global file system, rolling upgrades, and much more. • Struggling to set-up NLB cluster

  I'm trying to set up NLB on a couple of Windows 2008 R2 virtual servers running on top of Hyper V R2. The servers each have a single vNIC for LAN access (and a second vNIC for SAN access). I'm setting up the cluster to use Multicast mode. The vNICs are each set to allow MAC spoofing. Essentially I'm finding that i can add SERVER1 as a host and it will pick up and respond to the cluster IP from a remote subnet. If I then 'stop' the node in NLB manager it still responds when I would expect it to stop answering on that IP. If I recreate the cluster and add SERVER2 as the first host, the wizard completes correctly and an IPCONFIG on the server shows that it now has the cluster IP but I can't ping the cluster IP from a remote subnet but I can from another machine on the same subnet. As a final test - with both servers in the cluster, pinging from another machine on the same subnet I still get a response from the cluster IP when both nodes are stopped according to the NLB manager. The two VMs are sat on the same physical blade and are built up exactly the same as they'll be used as SharePoint web front end servers. I'm at a loss as to what could be wrong with the second VM that prevents it taking on the address just as the sole node in the cluster, never mind the strange behaviour of the cluster when I stop/start nodes.

• Programming Windows Cluster resource DLLs using Delphi

  I wonder whether there's a way to program a resource DLL for Windows Clusters in Delphi. I want to write a program that observes cluster state changes. Judging from the MSDN API reference, all relevant functions are located in the ClusAPI.h and ResAPI.h headers, but unfortunately it seems as if they haven't been ported yet and HeaderConv seems to fail on them. Does anyone has experience in doing such a thing?
