• Can I use my Belkin router as a repeater?

  I've got a brand new, unopened Belkin N600 DB router (yay 50% off sale), and I can't seem to figure out if I can use it as a repeater. As far as I can tell, it doesn't support DD-WRT or Tomato, but I'm wondering if there may be some way to rig it up to repeat Wifi. Also, I really need to know before I open it, because, being a bit tight on money at the moment, I'll probably sell it if I can't use it as a repeater. Finally, two caveats: I can't use the other wireless router for anything other than broadcasting straight from the modem (parents are paranoid about anything technological). I can't run ethernet to the second router due to the layout of the house. Thanks so much for the help everyone--if I'm being vague, tell me! EDIT: Also, the manual here is pretty useless on this topic as far as I can tell.

• At what point does programming become a useful skill?

  This is probably a very difficult question to answer, because of its subjectivity, but even a vague guess would help me out: Now that Khan Academy is beginning to offer Computer Science lectures I'm getting an itch to learn programming again. I maybe am a bit more technical than your average computer user, using Ubuntu as my OS, LaTeX for writing and I know some small tricks like regular expressions or boolean search for google. However from my previous attempts to learn programming, I realized I do not have a natural aptitude for it and I also don't seem to enjoy the process. But I am fairly certain that a basic proficiency in programming could prove to be very beneficial for me career wise; I also often get ideas for little scripts that I cannot implement. My question is: Let's say you study programming 1 hour / day on average. At what point will you become good enough so that programming can be used for automating tasks and actually saving time? Do you think programming is worth picking up if you never have the ambition to make it your career or even your hobby, but use it strictly for utility purposes?

• Do TCP/UDP connections add to the Windows incoming connection limit?

  Hi all, I've tried to figure out what Microsoft means by "Windows sockets" and it all seems very vague. Basically we have customers that sometimes try to set up workgroups with close to 10 Windows XP computers with drive and printer shares and we're worried that some of the non-Windows Ethernet devices on the network will cause issues with the inbound connection limit outlined here where only 10 inbound connections can be active at one time. For example, there is an Ethernet Caller ID device that broadcasts UDP packets to all computers, and a kitchen display system that likewise broadcasts UDP. They may also have incoming TCP packets for our custom online ordering module. Do these TCP/UDP connections count toward the inbound connection limit? I'm aware that Windows 7 has increased the limit to 20 but we might have future customers that will push that limit. Thanks in advance

  Title might be seem vague, so let me tell you a little bit history what i am trying to clarify question. I have been hired as a consultant for a corporate's small developement divison ( The company also owns a couple of software dev. companies) My ex manager runs a BI team, with reportes, analyts and developers. He asked me to evaluate overall design, software developement process and code quality . Here what i found, Lots of copy/paste code everywhere ( no reuse ) Even though they have everything TFS, VS Ultimate etc, No Build process , No Cruise Control.net / team city... No unit tests Web Pages with 3700 lines of code, Lots of huge functions ( which can be divided into smaller one's ) No naming convention both db and c# code No 3r party or open source project No IoC No Seperation Of Concerns No Code Quality Check ( NDepend or FxCope or nothing ) No Code Review No Communication within the team They claim they wrote an application framework ( 6 months 3 persons), but I would hardly call a framework ( of course no unit test, there are some but all commented out). Framework contains 14 projects but there are some projects with 1 file 20 lines of code . Honestly, what people are doing fixing bug all thr day( which will provide more bugs eventually), they are kind of isolated from community, some team members even dont know github or stackoverflow they probably went there with google but they dont know about it. So here is question, Is This list ok ? Or am i being picky? Since I dont have any grudge against them, I just want to be fair, honest and I would like to hear you suggestions, before I would submit this list. • How to learn to deliver quality software designs when working on a tight deadline?

  I read many books about how to design great software, but I kind of struggle to come up with a good design decisions when it comes to business apps, especially when the timeframe is tough. In the company I currently work for, the following situation happen all the time: my teamlead tells me that there's a task to do, I call some guy or a girl from business who tells me exactly what is it they want, and then I start coding. The task always fits in some existing application (we do only web apps or web services), usually it's purpose is to pull data from one datasource and put into the other one, with some business logic attached in the process. I start coding and then, after spending some time on a problem, my code didn't work as expected - either because of technical mistake or my lack of knowledge of the domain. The business is ringing me 2-3 times a day to hurry me up. I ask my team lead to help, he comes up, sees my code and goes like 'What's this?'. Then he throws away about half of my code, including all the design decisions I made, writes 2-3 methods that does the job (each of them usually 200-300 lines long or more, by the way), and task is complete, code works as it should have. The guy is smarter than me, obviously, and I'm aware of that. My goal is to be better software developer, that means write better code, not finish the job quicker with some crappy code. And the thing is, when I have enough time to tackle a problem, I can come up with a design that is good (in my opinion, of course), but I fall short to do so when I'm on a tight deadline.   Hi, I'm a bit vague on the precise syntax of robots.txt, but what I'm trying to achieve is: Tell all user agents not to crawl certain pages Tell certain user agents not to crawl anything (basically, some pages with enormous amounts of data should never be crawled; and some voracious but useless search engines, e.g. Cuil, should never crawl anything) If I do something like this: User-agent: * Disallow: /path/page1.aspx Disallow: /path/page2.aspx Disallow: /path/page3.aspx User-agent: twiceler Disallow: / ..will it flow through as expected, with all user agents matching the first rule and skipping page1, page2 and page3; and twiceler matching the second rule and skipping everything?

• Combining multiple linux boxes and create VMs out of it

  I am new to virtualization. I am running on ubuntu. I have a set of linux machines (5 to 6 machines). Which I want to combine as a single resource pool and on demand create multiple virtual instances of machines out of it. This is comparable to what VirtualBox does in a single system. • Redirect URL to a Tomcat webapp

  I have a Tomcat server with two webapps, app1 and app2 (the app part is really the same). Each app has an independent group of users. I would like the groups to be able to access their respective app using group1.domain.com/app and group2.domain.com/app URLs, meaning that the numbers should be hidden from the URL displayed in browser. I suppose there needs to be a mechanism that would return the correct app based on the group# part of the URL. I have a vague understanding of URL rewrites. Is there a way to do this with only Tomcat? Or do I need Apache HTTP server? I would rather not use Apache if possible, but have no problem going that way if necessary.

• How much ram to be able to convert large (5-6MB) jpegs? [closed]

  I've got a project where we want to be processing large jpegs (5-6MB) with apache and php (using GD library). My understanding is that the server converts the image into a BMP making it quite ram heavy and currently we're unable to do it with our 1gb of memory. Here's the error we get: Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 67108864 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 17408 bytes) How much ram should we be looking at running with to process images of this size? Edit: As Chris S the purist highlighted below, my post is apparently vague. I am doing the most basic and common manipulation of an image, say turning it from a 4352px x 3264px jpg of 5mb in size, to a 900px x 675px file.

  I wish to learn more about Technical and Solutions Architecture. Specifically, I'm concerned with designing HA, Fault-Tolerant Scalable web-based solutions (enough buzzwords ;-). Its a topic I'm familiar with on a technical level having worked as a sysadmin, but I don't know all the buzzwords Architects use and have to brush up on my UML and diagram techniques. I would like a book that describes what architecture is as a discipline and explores standard design patterns, and some do's and don'ts. Do you have any recommendations? I apologise if this sounds vague, its because I am still learning what Architecture is as a discipline having come from a sysadmin background. To be 100% clear I'm looking for books or websites that give broad overviews of what System Design patterns exist and how the discipline works. • options for physical architecture of rails site regarding caching server or cdn

  I have a rails app that is set on a single server currently. On production, I force_ssl for everything. I am interested in using a caching server for images (I'm fine with css and js being served from origin for time being). Would nginx or varnish (which I have no experience with) be a better solution (for October 2012)? I'd imagine that it would be easy to switch these around while still on this single server architecture. Or would something like cloudfront (which I also have no experience with) make sense for hosting image files? I know this is a vague question but appreciate any current feedback. thx in advance

• What's the best way to handle numerous recurring log entries in game loop?

  I have a custom logging system, use of which is scattered all over the engine and game. The system is linked to a "LogStore" that has an std::vector<string> logs[NUM_LOG_TYPES] - each vector corresponds with it's log type (info, error, debug, etc.). There's one extra std::vector that has "coordinates" to all log entries in the order they were received. Now, all the logging output is also displayed inside my development console in the game. The game console is handled by HTML-type GUI and therefore requires a new <p> element being added for each log output. My problem is that the log entries that are generated in the main loop each frame freeze the engine, because they continue to add elements to the in-game console, and if the console or guy generates a warning - that creates an infinite logging loop. I want to solve it by handling the recurring log entries in an elegant way that lets you know that something is critically wrong, but won't freeze the engine - like displaying the count of errors in the last 60 frames instead of displaying errors themselves. But how do you guys handle this? Does anyone know any nifty tricks to do this? I understand the question may sound vague, but if someone came across this type of issue I'm sure they would know exactly what's happening. Example problematic log entries: OpenGL warnings (I actually do check for errors every frame in many places) Really any prints anywhere in the main loop (may be debugging, may be warnings)

• Should my web app have its own domain name?

  I'm going to get a domain name for my personal web page. It will contain my blog, photos and other personal stuff, plus different web apps and tools that I'm working on. I have put quite a lot of work in one of the web apps, and I think it has great potential. It covers a niche in a way that no other page has done before and I can see great possibilities to expand it. Via links to webstores and ads I think it could even make some money, and if I play it right this could be the place to go when you're into the specific niche that it covers (sorry for being so vague). My question is, would it be better for a (potentially great) web app like this to have its own domain name (nameofmyapp.com) instead of being a subpage of my personal page (mypersonaldomain.com/nameofmyapp)? Is the web app more likely to be found by others, via Google etc, with its own domain name? Could a "subpage" give more attention (visitors) to my personal page? pros and cons?

• How does Google Chrome know my Firefox history if I never imported it?

  I have Firefox and Google Chrome installed in the same machine (Linux). It happens when I type something in Chrome Omnibox it suggests pages I have already visited in Firefox. I have never connected the accounts of both browsers I have never imported information from one browser to other I have never visited the suggested pages in Chrome The keyword I type in the omnibox is vague and there is no way it could guess the suggestion without having access to the Firefox history. i.e.: i type "ir" in Chrome and it suggests me the same Iron Maiden lyrics page I have browse before in Firefox. • How to get around OS X Lion Server SMB "safe save"?

  First, there is this problem: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4149 Which says that anything copied to os x server via smb will be "safe saved" and essentially chmod to 600. This is extremely annoying and counterproductive to having a share server... I did what the article said, but nothing has changed. It is very vague about how to actually set the ACL permissions, but I think I did that via Server.app - hardware - storage - edit permissions. I added (in addition to other things): Guests - Read & Write Others - Read & Write Actually every entry is read and write, but despite this...it is still chmod to 600 when I try to copy a file via SMB. Where else should I look to solve this madness? Alternatively, how can I get rid of this crappy SMB and put back the original SMB? I tried SMBUp but it just fails to start the service every time...

• Roughly, what percentage of users will reach changed DNS?

  If my main server go offline for some reason for +1hrs, I'm planning to make a DNS change so users will access secondary server. It is not a perfect solution to decrease downtime but it is simple and would work. I'm not sure about its usefulness. So I have a question. If I'm going to make a DNS change to an A record for my domain (changing from one IP to another), what percentage of users are moved over to the new info in 2hrs? (roughly) I know this is a vague question and there are lots of variables but any input is welcomed because I had painful downtime experiences and don't want to experience it again. Thanks

• Get Directory Size through SFTP

  A client has a managed websever; on this server is an e-commerce script and part of the script dumps a backup every week. The backup is stored on the web server (not in the HTTP route). The ISP takes a copy, and my clients wants to take a copy too. What I am trying to do is before downloading the file I want to be able to calculate the backup directory size - but the only access I have is through SFTP. Is it possible to easily get the directory size and then use this in a PowerShell Script. NOTE: I have written an automatic download script in Powershell, and I want to extend this. Forgive me if this sounds vague I can provide further info if you have any specific questions.

• Is KCFinder a legal alternative to CKFinder

  On the one hand there is http://ckfinder.com/ CKFinder or the people behind it have always been very vague about their licenses when we asked information about them, so we aren't really fond of using their commercially licensed products. So I've looked for an alternative and found http://kcfinder.sunhater.com which comes with an LGPL license, perfect for use in a commercial application that just wants to use the file browser and not modify it. Now they both look very similar and my question is: is KCfinder a legal alternative to CKfinder? Or is it an exact and modified copy? Does anyone know this or can find this out?

  I'm afraid my Google-Foo is failing me again today. I'm trying to find a good tutorial on creating custom ItemsControls in Silverlight (though I imgaine a WPF version might work as well). I'm trying to create a custom ItemsControl that will be something of a virtualized ListBox. What I'm trying to accomplish isn't really similar enough to the current ListBox control to justify trying to modify the existing control, so I figure a custom one is in order here. • Differences in IE8 behavior between XP, Vista, Win7?

  Is there any significant difference in behavior (HTML, CSS, Javascript, ...) with Internet Explorer 8 on different operating systems? In other words, will a web page work the same way across IE8+XP, IE8+Vista and IE8+Win7, or are there some significant differences? (I'm aware that installed plugins and fonts will have an impact, but that's a bit outside my scope at the moment; assuming compatibility mode X-UA-Compatible: IE=8 or edge) Although The IEBlog contains very useful information, I haven't found this data there - so I'm assuming that there should not be any difference. However, search has turned up this (vague) question: "IE8 on XP: looks great! IE8 on Vista: looks terrible". Will have to check IE8+{XP,V,7} in VM in the meantime.

• IMAP Idle Timeout

  Lets say I am using IMAP IDLE to monitor changes in a mail folder. The IMAP spec says that IDLE connections should only stay alive for 30 minutes max, but it is recommended that a lower number of minutes is selected - say 20 minutes, then cancel the idle and restart. I am wondering what would happen if the mail contents changed between the idle canceling, and the new idle being created. An email could potentially be missed. Given that RECENT is a bit vague, this could lead to getting a message list before the old idle ends, and a new idle starts. But this is almost the same as polling every 20 minutes, and defeats some of the benefit of idle. Alternatively, a new idle session could be started prior to terminating the expiring one. But in any case, I think this problem has already been solved so here I am asking for recommendations. Thanks, Paul

  I want to write a Java program that automates the work that the ODBC Data Source Administrator does in Windows. That is, given an ODBC connection name and a path to the database on the hard drive, I want it to create the connection. I really have no idea where to even begin with this. I looked at this but it said it was for C and I don't think that's very helpful. If anyone could point me in the right direction for this at all, I would appreciate it.   hi , i would like to program some graphic figures such as line, circle,etc. i have used turboc++ 3.0 for dos graphics. i would like to do the same with the compilers dev c++ or code blocks or vc++. i would like to implement dda and bresenhems line and circle drawing algorithm. how should i go about implementing these programs through these compilers (not the command line tools). i have a really vague picture of graphics programming.please help.. thanks in advance. please note : i have a nvidia graphics card 1gb.. so i cannot use dos graphics (i think the card is the reason).
