  • Disable updates on certain softwares

    When on trying to update an ubuntu distro (or for that matter any linux distribution) I often find a list of updates amounting to more than 150 mb or so. To my displeasure I find that the culprit more often than not has to do with libreoffice. I know I can untick those connected with libreoffice but I wonder if there is an elegant way; may be a small program in between that helps me untick those programs that I wish to stay un-updated.

    I'm working on the 'Ease of Access' section of my website with the options to increase the font-size displayed on pages to a minimum, invert colours and whatnot. I wish to implement a plugin which, if enabled by the user, to read content on my website. Presumably my best option is a website plugin, however there might be some programming I've not come across which allows the likes of PHP to read content. I'm not entirely sure how this all works.

  • Access Windows 7 Media Streaming

    I wish to be able to see and stream music to my Ubuntu 10.04 installation through Rhythmbox. I have enabled media streaming in Windows 7 and I can see Rhythmbox as an allowed device. I have installed the Coherence plugin for Rhythmbox. I can see my Windows 7 PC under the Shared folder in Rhythmbox, but I do not see any of my music. Is there a step along the way that I missed or something else that I have to enable?

  • Uninstalled aplications still show launcher icons under installed aplications?

    The question is in the title, I always remove applications that I do not use after installing or upgrading, this includes games etc (wish it was possible to install Ubuntu with no applications then add the ones I require after, is this possible?) Anyway after removing the applications they still show under the installed applications menu, if you click on them nothing happens but how do I get rid of the remaining icons?

    When you launch an instance and explicitly name it using: juju deploy lamp website1 Is there a way on the newly created instance to get the data that tells the machine that its: called website1 or even better: a unit number such as website1/0, website1/1 etc etc The reason for doing this is that in my charm I wish to set the hostname to this value. I did wonder if it was set via ec2metadata but it doesn't seem to list this information.

  • Want to make RTS strategy game, good starting point...?

    everybody! I find this community because I did research about game developing topics. So I decide to register on this community and ask for your opinion. I am not begineer in computer stuffs, and I know logic of programming language. I have little knowlegde of C, C++, Started to learn C#...but I was always oriented about other areas of IT. Amateur for game making but not in IT general! I am interested to make RTS strategy video game, isometric camera view (like PC GAME COMMANDOS for example)...so I started to read many books about DirectX, XNA, OpenGL, C#, AI programming...so I want to know where is good starting point for making this game genre. I want to use C# for this project, not C++, since I always had trouble with it, because it is too complicated. I see good oportunity for learning C#, since it has more object-oriented concept, with much less code and easy readible code for writing. Beside of that I know that C++ is the more powerful language until today. So I want to use DirectX and C# for my project. But it will required more time for sure, to learn it. I have trouble with finding books for c# & DirectX (I found just one), but in every next book, it is programming in c++! I read many web sites and they mentioned Slim DX, and in generaly, other articles which I read tells that it is possible to make good game with combination c# and directX, but...I don't have enough information about all this stuffs, so I became confused! It is really hard to have wish to learn c++ from scratch, since I started c# and I like it really...I don't try OpenGL, but I am already familiar with DirectX (some beginning stuffs), and I think that it is good and interesting. So, I decide to choose between maybe Unity3d and XNA first. XNA...hm, it sound that it is not bad solution, but I heard that it is already overcome technology, and I think that it is better to wait with XNA, until I try to make something with DirectX and C#, at first. But I dont know it is possible to make strategy game in XNA?! Maybe I am wrong. I also, find Unity 3D game engine and I find that I could programming there in C#, but many all examples are written in Javascript (Digital tutors videos)...But I generaly have wish to learn it too, because it allows to export games to mobile phones, there a lot of documentations, it is free, etc... I want to find best way to learn C# and DirectX, and make this game, but I dont know if it's possible to combine?! But maybe is good to first try Unity and XNA, because I am beginner?! Thank you all!   • Automatically Kill/Restart Process(es) When Memory is Critically Low

    I have a Debian Wheezy VPS box where am running a couple of Django apps in production. Ideally, would have tried addressed my current memory footprint issues by optimizing the apps, adding more RAM or augmenting with Swap. But the problem is that I doubt there's much memory optimization I'd milk from optimizing the Django apps (the stack being open-source and robust), and adding RAM is a cost constraint for me (this is a remote VPS), also, the host doesn't offer options to use Swap! So, in the meantime (as I wait to secure more resources to afford more RAM), I wish to mitigate the scenarios where the server runs out memory so that I just have to request a VPS restart (as in, at that point, I can't even SSH into the box!). So, what I would love in a solution is the ability to detect when a process (or generally, total system memory usage) exceeds a certain critical amount (for now, example the FREE RAM falls to say 10%) - which I've noticed occurs after the VPS's been up for long, and when also traffic is suddenly much to some of the heavy apps (most are just staging apps anyway). So, I wish to be able to kill/restart the offending process(es) - most likely Apache. Which solution when done manually in these situations has restored sane memory usage levels - a hint that possibly one or more of the Django apps has a memory leak? In brief: Monitor overall system RAM usage When FREE RAM falls below a given critical threshold (say below 10%), kill/restart the offending process(es) - or simpler, if we assume from my current log analysis (using linux-dash) that Apache is often the offender, then kill/restart it. Rinse and repeat...

    I've been Googleing for a few hours on how to just compress a file inside a directory and I can't find anything. I found how to just compress a folder in general. Now I wish to know how I can compress a folder in a folder with a file. Current code: 7zG.exe a -tzip "test.zip" dontcompressme/compressme/new.txt pause As you can see above, I don't want to compress the first folder, but only the second and what ever is within that folder. I have the 7zG.exe sitting in the main folder and I have some files that are three folders in, but I don't know how to only compress those. Here is my directory list: Folder One (don't compress) Folder Two (don't compress) Folder Three (okay to compress) Document One.txt (okay to compress) Document Two.txt (okay to compress) Index.html (okay to compress) Does anyone know how I can do this in the most simplest way ever invented by man? Cause whenever I go to a website using Google it goes throw all these methods on how to compress a folder, but not do it the way I wish it to do. It makes me kinda upset cause I can't get a simple and straight forward answer. Thank you if you answer my question.

    At the server I installed openldap-server, at this computer open-ldap client has already been installed. Version of openldap-client (2.4.16) was older then new openldap-server (2.4.21) and the version of client has updated too. OpenLDAP-client works with postfix on this server and after all updates postfix cann't start again. The error when postfix stop|start is: /libexec/ld-elf.so.1: Shared object "libldap-2.4.so.6" not found, required by "postfix" At the category with libraries is libldap-2.4.so.7, but libldap-2.4.so.6 is removed from the server. When I want to deinstall curently version of openldap-client, system write ===> Deinstalling for net/openldap24-client O.K., but when I start "make install" system write: ===> Installing for openldap-sasl-client-2.4.23 ===> openldap-sasl-client-2.4.23 depends on shared library: sasl2.2 - found ===> Generating temporary packing list ===> Checking if net/openldap24-client already installed ===> An older version of net/openldap24-client is already installed (openldap-client-2.4.21) You may wish to ``make deinstall'' and install this port again by ``make reinstall'' to upgrade it properly.     I'm using Mac OS and connect to a VPN to hide my location and IP (I have the 'send all traffic over VPN connection' box checked in teh Network system pref), I wish to remain anonymous and do not wish to reveal my actual IP, hence the VPN. I have a prefpan called pearportVPN that automatically connects me to my VPN when I get online. The problem is, when I connect to the internet using Airport (or other means) I have a few seconds of unsecured internet connection before my Mac logs onto my VPN. Therefore its only a matter of time before I inadvertently expose my real IP address in the few seconds it takes between when I connect to the internet and when I log onto my VPN. Is there any way I can block any traffic to and from my Mac that does not go through my VPN, so that nothing can connect unless I'm logged onto my VPN? I suspect I would need to find a third party app that would block all traffic except through the Server Address, perhaps Intego Virus Barrier X6 or little snitch, but I'm afraid I'm not sure which is right or how to configure them. Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The above is to be run with multi-threading, so that I can send around 5-10 URL requests simultaneously. I have implemented something in Selenium using Java, but have not been able to do the multi-threading approach. Then when I capture the cookie information from here and store it, I open another window to output all the cookie information for that server to my browser window. This works fine when I do outside of Selenium code, but when I do it within the above code, it opens a "Save As..." popup and my tests stop. :-( I wish to save the contents of that second call to a new file, but have not been able to do the same. Also, if I have to send multiple such requests to the server, how would that be possible in Java using a Selenium Framework. Currently, I am opening multiple instances of the framework and running them with different parameters :-(
