• Permit Communicator to display an web site with an ActiveX control in Vista or Windows 7

  I have a UCMA service that sends a URL to load in a communicator extensibility tab as mentioned here: http://blogs.claritycon.com/blogs/michael_greenlee/archive/2009/02/19/context-windows-in-communicator-using-ucma-v2-0.aspx http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/ucclientsdk/thread/4406e412-01f1-466f-a593-3b83652dcdb1 This works fine with Office Communicator 2007 R2 for most trusted links, and on Windows XP and 2003 it works fine with a page with an ActiveX control. However, the ActiveX content is not displayed in Vista or Window 7. I've tried relaxing the security settings to no avail. Any suggestions or guidance would be much appreciated.

• Internet Time tab has disappeared from the Date and Time applet of the Control Panel

  Previously, there was an Internet Time tab on the Date and Time applet of the Control Panel, wherein one could force a query of an internet time server and also type in a different server from the ones supplied. However, this tab has now disappeared, and I need to have it back. I should mention that this machine has never been part of a domain, since it seems that machines that are such do not have such a tab. • Windows file server access control by device

  I'm trying to build a system where access to certain resources (file shares) in Windows Server, is limited not only by the username (in a Active Directory domain), but also by the client machine. So far, I haven't found a good way to do this; adding the computer account to the DACL is apparently not the way to do it. Windows Server 2012 supports this with Dynamic Access Control, but this method requires all clients to be Windows 8, it seems, with no way to use this with Windows 7 clients. Is there a supported way to do this? (or alternatively, add support for device authorization with Windows 7).

• VNC-like remote control over home network

  I'm aware of how to use VNC to share screens or grant remote control of your machine over the internet by using VNC or one of the web-based "go to my pc" type services. If two computers are connected to a router (i.e. standard home network), is there an easier way of viewing and controlling one computer from the other? I'd like to avoid going outside the LAN, onto the internet, then back in if possible. Both machines are Windows XP, but I'm not looking for Remote Desktop by the way.

• Control cell reference increment when dragging a forumula in Libre Office Calc (3.5)

  Using Libre Office Calc (3.5) and have a question. When copying a formula that references cells into multiple empty cells the default is to increment each cell reference by one column or row, depending on the direction that the formula is being drug. A formula '= 1 + A1' drug horizontally changes to '= 1 + B1' when pulled one cell to right and '=1 + A2' when pulled one cell down. Is there a way to control increase the increment of the referenced cell? Is is possible to have a formula '= 1 + A1' that effectively changes to '= 1 + A3' when drug down one cell, '= 1 + A5' when drug down two cells, etc? If it matters, I am trying to take a constantly updating master list of data that is organized by dates (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and create separate spread sheets for each day of the week that can be updated by only pulling down the formula into the next cell. My attempts at using the 'lookup' function, 'offset' function, and creating a sort column in Libre Office Calc are thwarted by my inability to figure out how to get around the single step increment when pulling a formula down into the next cell. • Putting a whole linux server under source control (git)

  I am thinking about putting my whole linux server under version control using git. The reason behind it being that that might be the easiest way to detect malicious modifications/rootkits. All I would naively think is necessary to check the integrity of the system: Mount the linux partition every week or so using a rescue system, check if the git repository is still untempered and then issue a git status to detect any changes made to the system. Apart from the obvious waste in disk space, are there any other negative side-effects? Is it a totally crazy idea? Is it even a secure way to check against rootkits since I most likely would have to at least exclude /dev and /proc ?

• Linux File Permissions & Access Control Query

  Hi, Lets say I am user: bob & group: users. There is this file: -rw----r-- 1 root users 4 May 8 22:34 testfile First question, why can't bob read the file as it's readable by others? Is it simply that if you are denied by group, then you are auto-blacklisted for others? I always assumed that the final 3 bits too precedence over user/group permission bits, guess I was wrong... Second question, how is this implemented? I suppose it's linked to the first query, but how does this work in relation to Access Control, is it related to how ACLs work / are queried? Just trying to understand how these 9 permission bits are actually implemented/used in Linux. Thanks alot.

• Method to control multiple sites using same cookie?

  Is it possible for two different web pages to use the same cookie? For example, some news sites now have buttons on the bottom, where if you are logged into facebook, you can just click the button to "like" the article. Is this a case of a 3rd party website using facebook's cookie to know which account you are, and if so, is there a way I can control it? I'm not sure how the new "like" system works, so maybe the button part isn't actually on the news site, but hosted on facebooks servers or something, so it's really facebook itself accessing its own cookie. If that's the case, is there a way I can choose when a site accesses its own cookie? Thanks for any help!

• Some printers are merged into control panel on Windows 7

  I install the same printer several times to allow easy selection for users. They just choose the desired printer to have the corresponding functionnality (instead of going to printer properties and change them back and forth): one with double-sided printing, one for draft quality, one for upper tray, etc. On Windows 7, when I install a printer several times, the control panel's printers icons are merged. I then have only one icon for two or three identical printers. I can right-clic on the icon to display the usual menu, and some items of the menu have an arrow to access each printer. This is very missleading for users and admins. I have this behaviour on some computers, when others don't exhibit this. I didn't found what is the difference between computers with and without the problem. Anyone know how to prevent this ?

• How to control routes added by RasDial

  I am using the RasDial function on a Windows box (Windows Server 2008) to dial a device from which the server then reads data. It seems that some new routes are added to the network routing table when the dial-up connection is made. That interferes with other network interfaces on the server. In particular, RasDial adds a default route which routes traffic to the device, which makes the server unreachable until the connection is dropped. Is there a way to control which routes are added by RasDial? I have been studying Microsoft's document for RasDial and associated items (RASDIALPARAMS, RASDIALEXTENSIONS) without finding anything about routing. There is an option for "Use default gateway on remote network" when configuring a VPN, but I don't see how to apply that in this case. Thanks for any light you can shed on this problem.

• Mimicing Mac-style command/alt/control keys in Linux

  I absolutely love that Mac separates the command key from the control key, allowing OS shortcuts and text shortcuts to co-exist. It's incredibly useful, especially because it allows emacs shortcuts everywhere. I've searched almost everywhere for some kind of utility that can allow this and can't find anything. Any help? Note: I want to do more than just remap my keyboard. I want to actually split OS shortcuts and text shortcuts. The only way I can see doing that is to manually go through each shortcut in Gnome and Compiz and change it.

  When I try to instantiate a PDF browser control like this in C#: AcroPDFLib.AcroPDFClass acrobat = new AcroPDFLib.AcroPDFClass(); I get a COMException with this message: Creating an instance of the COM component with CLSID {CA8A9780-280D-11CF-A24D-444553540000} from the IClassFactory failed due to the following error: 80004005. I have made a reference to AcroPDF.dll which has the component name Adobe Acrobat 7.0 Browser Control Type Library 1.0. I can't figure out what is wrong. Help most appreciated!

• Create a UPnP Control Point in Silverlight

To me that implies that I'll need to use COM interop with Microsoft's upnp.dll (and the SL application will have to be out of browser and platform specific). Is there any source code available in C# that shows how to create a control point with Microsoft's stack? If there are other options available I'd like to hear about it, from reading around the web it appears the MS stack is buggy.

For example, say a control's upper left corner was located at 500, 500 relative to MainWindow what code would convert that number to (0, 0)? I'd like the solution to be agnostic of the layout mechanism (i.e. not require me to parent the control in a Canvas and use the Top and Bottom methods).

• Add Silverlight Bing Maps Control to Windows Mobile 7 application

  I know the bits just came out today, but one of the first things I want to do with the newly released Windows Mobile 7 SDK is put a map up on the screen and mess around. I've downloaded the latest version of the Silverlight Maps Control and added the references to my application. As a matter of fact, the VS 2010 design view of the MainPage.xaml shows the map control after adding the namespace and placing the control. I'm using the provided VS 2010 Express version that comes with the Win Mobile 7 SDK and have just used the New Project - Windows Phone Application template. When I try to build I get two warnings related to the Microsoft.Maps.MapControl dll's. Warning 1 The primary reference "Microsoft.Maps.MapControl, Version=1.0.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=498d0d22d7936b73, processorArchitecture=MSIL" could not be resolved because it has an indirect dependency on the framework assembly "System.Windows.Browser, Version=2.0.5.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e" which could not be resolved in the currently targeted framework. "Silverlight,Version=v4.0,Profile=WindowsPhone". To resolve this problem, either remove the reference "Microsoft.Maps.MapControl, Version=1.0.1.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=498d0d22d7936b73, processorArchitecture=MSIL" or retarget your application to a framework version which contains "System.Windows.Browser, Version=2.0.5.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=7cec85d7bea7798e". My question is can I get the same functionality in .NET somewhere without a control.
