  • Can I prevent an IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE command to a specific device at boot?

    - by Brian Spisak
This is related to a previous question related to installation that is now resolved. I'm opening a new question, because I still need to get my DVD drive working. Problem: Failed boot when my ASUS DRW-24B1/ST DVD drive is attached to my asmedia ASM1061. Symptom: ata8.00: exception Emask 0x52 Sact 0x0 SErr 0xffffffff action 0xe frozen ata8: SError: { blah blah } ata8.00: failed command: IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE ata8.00: cmd blah blah res blah blah (ATA bus error) ata8.00: status: { DRDY } ata8: hard resetting link Background: The ASM1061 is a PCIe to SATA bridge providing 2 x 6Gb/s ports and is supposed to be fully compliant to SATA specs. I just discovered in the fine print of my ASUS P8Z77-V pro motherboard that "These SATA ports are for data hard drivers only. ATAPI devices are not supported." However, I have already installed Windows 7 using this drive and I can run the Ubuntu 12.04 installer from it as well. The only time I have a problem is during Ubuntu boot when it tries an IDENTIFY PACKET DEVICE which seems to be an ATAPI command. I can't simply switch this device to another SATA port because they are already allocated to other devices. (My chipset's 2 x 6Gb/s are connected to my boot SSD and a fast HDD while the 4 x 3Gb/s ports are running a RAID 5 array.) If this can't be fixed or worked around, I suppose I'll have to go buy SATA add-in card. Blech. Thoughts: If indeed this is a device specific issue (that it doesn't support ATAPI discovery) then I can't expect - is it udev? - to work with it. But, it seems that Windows and even the Ubuntu installer work just fine. So why does udev have a problem? At the end of the day, it would be nice to have the DVD working under Ubuntu, but I can live without it. But, as this is a dual-boot machine, I can't physically disconnect it because I want it to work with Windows. (And physically disconnecting it every time I want to boot Ubuntu is NOT an option. ;-) Questions: Should this be considered a bug? My feelings are that if it works with other OS that it should probably work with Ubuntu as well. How can I work around this problem? I have a limited knowledge of linux internals, but it seems I should be able to somehow tell udev (or whatever is doing the discovery) to ignore that device. Is there a way?

  • What attracts software developers such as yourselves to choose to program for the Android mobile platform?

    - by Hasnan Karim
Dear programmers, as part of my final year university project, I am conducting research into what makes programmers prefer to program for Android as opposed to other mobile operating systems. The description does not need to be detailed however, I am trying to find patterns between programmers to determine what properties (other than money) a software company such as Android must have in order to attract programmers and therefore grow.

  • How does USB device recognition work?

    - by GorillaSandwich
I'm curious how USB device recognition works in Windows. I imagine it's something like this: When you plug in a device, it tells Windows "here's my device ID to tell you what I am" Windows looks to see if any drivers have been installed that match that device ID. The driver probably tells Windows what the device should be called - like "BlackBerry Curve" or "Canon Printer" If so, it somehow associates that device with that driver Otherwise, it looks for a matching driver online (if you let it) Am I right? If so, that still leaves some questions. When you install drivers, where do they go? Are they files in a folder, or do they get added to the registry? What is Windows doing when it first recognizes the device, thinks, and finally says "your new device is installed and ready to use?" Where does Windows look for missing drivers? Is it in their own database? Do device manufacturers submit drivers to Microsoft for inclusion there? Can anybody explain how this process really works? Also, do other OSes do this differently?

  • what should a developer know/address to build commercial Android Apps ?

    - by giulio
Android and mobile development is an exciting area of development. As it is a new discipline, what would be expected of an android developer to build commercially robust applications in terms of skills ? The problem that I and, i think, many other "noobs" into the technology would like to know are the areas of technical skills and the progression to the required advanced topics that goes beyond the the very basics provided by Google. There is a lot of information that's quite useful but its not organised into categories of discipline nor order.

  • 5 Step Procedure for Android Deployment with NetBeans IDE

    - by Geertjan
I'm finding that it's so simple to deploy apps to Android that I'm not needing to use the Android emulator at all, haven't been able to figure out how it works anyway (big blinky screen pops up that I don't know what to do with). I just simply deploy the app straight to Android, try it out there, and then uninstall it, if needed. The whole process (only step 4 and 5 below need to be done for each deployment iteration, after you've done steps 1, 2, and 3 once to set up the deployment environment), takes a few seconds. Here's what I do: On Android, go to Settings | Applications. Check "Unknown sources". In "Development", check "USB debugging". Connect Android to your computer via a USB cable. Start up NetBeans IDE, with NBAndroid installed, as described yesterday. and create your "Hello World" app. Right-click the project in the IDE and choose "Export Signed Android Package". Create a new keystore, or choose an existing one, via the wizard that appears. At the end of the wizard (would be nice if NBAndroid would let you set up a keystore once and then reuse it for all your projects, without needing to work through the whole wizard step by step each time), you'll have a new release APK file (Android deployment archive) in the project's 'bin' folder, which you can see in the Files window. Go to the command line (would be nice if NBAndroid were to support adb, would mean I wouldn't need the command line at all), browse to the location of the APK file above. Type "adb install helloworld-release.apk" or whatever the APK file is called. You should see a "Success" message in the command line. Now the application is installed. On your Android, go to "Applications", and there you'll see your brand new app. Then try it out there and delete it if you're not happy with it. After you've made a change in your app, simply repeat step 4 and 5, i.e., create a new APK and install it via adb. Step 4 and 5 take a couple of seconds. And, given that it's all so simple, I don't see the value of the Android emulator, at all.

  • Is it a good idea to make a native Android app, or is the environment too much hassle? [closed]

    - by desbest
I've constantly been hearing bad things about the native development environment for Android, and that it should be avoided at all costs. Also it would require that I learn java and use Eclipse IDE. My concerns are mainly about how easy (or difficult) it is to code with the APIs. Is it good to make native Android apps without cross platform tools Phonegap/Titanium/Rhodes, or is it too much trouble than it's worth?

  • Android: restful API service

    - by Martyn
Hey, I'm looking to make a service which I can use to make calls to a web based rest api. I've spent a couple of days looking through stackoverflow.com, reading books and looking at articles whilst playing about with some code and I can't get anything which I'm happy with. Basically I want to start a service on app init then I want to be able to ask that service to request a url and return the results. In the meantime I want to be able to display a progress window or something similar. I've created a service currently which uses IDL, I've read somewhere that you only really need this for cross app communication, so think these needs stripping out but unsure how to do callbacks without it. Also when I hit the post(Config.getURL("login"), values) the app seems to pause for a while (seems weird - thought the idea behind a service was that it runs on a different thread!) Currently I have a service with post and get http methods inside, a couple of AIDL files (for two way communication), a ServiceManager which deals with starting, stopping, binding etc to the service and I'm dynamically creating a Handler with specific code for the callbacks as needed. I don't want anyone to give me a complete code base to work on, but some pointers would be greatly appreciated; even if it's to say I'm doing it completely wrong. I'm pretty new to Android and Java dev so if there are any blindingly obvious mistakes here - please don't think I'm a rubbish developer, I'm just wet behind the ears and would appreciate being told exactly where I'm going wrong. Anyway, code in (mostly) full (really didn't want to put this much code here, but I don't know where I'm going wrong - apologies in advance): public class RestfulAPIService extends Service { final RemoteCallbackList<IRemoteServiceCallback> mCallbacks = new RemoteCallbackList<IRemoteServiceCallback>(); public void onStart(Intent intent, int startId) { super.onStart(intent, startId); } public IBinder onBind(Intent intent) { return binder; } public void onCreate() { super.onCreate(); } public void onDestroy() { super.onDestroy(); mCallbacks.kill(); } private final IRestfulService.Stub binder = new IRestfulService.Stub() { public void doLogin(String username, String password) { Message msg = new Message(); Bundle data = new Bundle(); HashMap<String, String> values = new HashMap<String, String>(); values.put("username", username); values.put("password", password); String result = post(Config.getURL("login"), values); data.putString("response", result); msg.setData(data); msg.what = Config.ACTION_LOGIN; mHandler.sendMessage(msg); } public void registerCallback(IRemoteServiceCallback cb) { if (cb != null) mCallbacks.register(cb); } }; private final Handler mHandler = new Handler() { public void handleMessage(Message msg) { // Broadcast to all clients the new value. final int N = mCallbacks.beginBroadcast(); for (int i = 0; i < N; i++) { try { switch (msg.what) { case Config.ACTION_LOGIN: mCallbacks.getBroadcastItem(i).userLogIn( msg.getData().getString("response")); break; default: super.handleMessage(msg); return; } } catch (RemoteException e) { } } mCallbacks.finishBroadcast(); } public String post(String url, HashMap<String, String> namePairs) {...} public String get(String url) {...} }; A couple of AIDL files: package com.something.android oneway interface IRemoteServiceCallback { void userLogIn(String result); } and package com.something.android import com.something.android.IRemoteServiceCallback; interface IRestfulService { void doLogin(in String username, in String password); void registerCallback(IRemoteServiceCallback cb); } and the service manager: public class ServiceManager { final RemoteCallbackList<IRemoteServiceCallback> mCallbacks = new RemoteCallbackList<IRemoteServiceCallback>(); public IRestfulService restfulService; private RestfulServiceConnection conn; private boolean started = false; private Context context; public ServiceManager(Context context) { this.context = context; } public void startService() { if (started) { Toast.makeText(context, "Service already started", Toast.LENGTH_SHORT).show(); • Intel Network Connection: This device cannot start. (Code 10)

    - by harryuser
Hi, I have a Intel® Desktop Board DP55KG (see http://www.intel.com/products/desktop/motherboards/DP55KG/DP55KG-overview.htm), which has a Intel 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection on board. Additionally, I have a Intel PRO/1000 PT Dual Port Server Adapter in a PCI express slot and I am running Windows 7 Professional 32-bit. The problem I am having is that the Intel 82578DC Gigabit Network Connection will not start on boot with the following message: "This device cannot start. (Code 10)". Disabling and then enabling the device after boot makes the network connection work again without any problems, but as soon as I reboot the problem occurs again. Any suggestion how to fix this? I have seen this problem on another Intel S3420GP board as well in Windows 7 that is.

  • USB Device With Embedded Fileserver

    - by Richard Martinez
I'm attempting to access logs from a proprietary hardware box with no reasonable hope of modifying the software. There is a process on the device to dump log files to a flash drive on the USB port after entering a code sequence. Currently, analysis of the logs requires the following: Physical presence at the device Manual entry of the code sequence Removal of USB device Insertion of USB device into a normal Linux box I'm hoping there is some sort of device that can act as a USB mass storage device but simultaneously make it's contents available as a network file share (wired preferred). Does such a device currently exist? A combo hardware/software solution would also work.

  • What are USB device resets?

    - by ILIV
I have this brand-new software RAID-1 built with two WD Elements external USB drives, and I can see that Linux repeats the following message quite a bit: ... how to find the device name as ( e1000g2 , e1000g3 , etc ) according to his IP address on Solaris machine for example ifconfig -a | grep 10.106.134.133 inet 10.106.134.133 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 10.106.134.255 ifconfig with grep command view only the line with the IP address , and the device name appears before the IP address so my target is to match the device name according to the IP address on Solaris machine , and then insert the device name in to parameter ( ksh ) please advice? full example: from ifconfig -a ( I get the IP and device name , what I need is to find the device name according to IP address , and insert the device name in to parameter ) e1000g2: flags=201000843<UP,BROADCAST,RUNNING,MULTICAST,IPv4,CoS> mtu 1500 inet 10.106.134.133 netmask ffffff00 broadcast 10.106.134.255

  • What options exist when the vendor does not supply an ADB driver for an Android device?

    - by STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
So I bought an Android phone and the vendor does not offer any drivers whatsoever. The Android SDK and the drivers that come with it don't seem to work with the device, but the device itself reports as Android 2.2.1. Other users have reported that the drivers of the Nook Color worked for them, but I cannot confirm this, after trying. What options do I have to connect to the device (and ultimately to root it)? Is it truly just the .inf file that I need to manipulate in order to make the device ID known to Windows? After all there are tools to figure out those strings while the device is connected (although "unknown") ...

  • TabHost / TabWidget - Scale Background Image ?

    - by user359519
I need to scale my TabWidget background images so they maintain aspect ratio. I am using a TabHost with a TabWidget. I am then using setBackgroundDrawable to set the images. I found a close answer here - Background in tab widget ignore scaling. However, I'm not sure just where to add the new Drawable code. (Working with the HelloTabWidget example, none of my modules use RelativeLayout, and I don't see any layout for "tabcontent".) I also found this thread - Android: Scale a Drawable or background image?. According to it, it sounds like I would have to pre-scale my images, which defeats the whole purpose of making them scaleable. I also found another thread where someone subclassed the Drawable class so it would either not scale, or it would scale properly. I can't find it now, but that seems like a LOT to go through when you should just be able to do something simple like mTab.setScaleType(centerInside). Here's my code: main.xml: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?> <TabHost xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android" android:id="@android:id/tabhost" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:background="@drawable/main_background"> <LinearLayout android:orientation="vertical" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent"> <FrameLayout android:id="@android:id/tabcontent" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="fill_parent" android:layout_weight="1"/> <TabWidget android:id="@android:id/tabs" android:layout_width="fill_parent" android:layout_height="wrap_content" android:layout_weight="0"/> </LinearLayout> </TabHost> main activity: tabHost.setOnTabChangedListener(new OnTabChangeListener() { TabHost changedTabHost = getTabHost(); TabWidget changedTabWidget = getTabWidget(); View changedView = changedTabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(0); public void onTabChanged(String tabId) { int selectedTab = changedTabHost.getCurrentTab(); TabWidget tw = getTabWidget(); if(selectedTab == 0) { //setTitle("Missions Timeline"); View tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(0); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_timeline_on)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(1); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_map_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(2); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_search_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(3); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_news_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(4); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_license_off)); //ImageView iv = (ImageView)tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(0).findViewById(android.R.id.icon); //iv.setImageDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_timeline_on)); //iv = (ImageView)tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(1).findViewById(android.R.id.icon); //iv.setImageDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_map_off)); } else if (selectedTab == 1) { //setTitle("Spinoffs Around You"); View tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(0); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_timeline_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(1); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_map_on)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(2); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_search_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(3); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_news_off)); tempView = tabHost.getTabWidget().getChildAt(4); tempView.setBackgroundDrawable(getResources().getDrawable(R.drawable.tab_license_off)); } I also tried 9patch images, but they wind up being too small. So, what's the best way to go about this?

  • How does object of sub-class record information about its super-class the in a Virtual Inheritance

    - by Summer_More_More_Tea
Hi there: I encounter this problem when tackling with virtual inheritance. I remember that in a non-virtual inheritance hierarchy, object of sub-class hold an object of its direct super-class. What about virtual inheritance? In this situation, does object of sub-class hold an object of its super-class directly or just hold a pointer pointing to an object of its super-class? By the way, why the output of the following code is: sizeof(A): 8 sizeof(B): 20 sizeof(C): 32 Code: #include <iostream> using namespace std; class A{ char k[ 3 ]; public: virtual void a(){}; }; class B : public virtual A{ char j[ 3 ]; public: virtual void b(){}; }; class C : public virtual B{ char i[ 3 ]; public: virtual void c(){}; }; int main( int argc, char *argv[] ){ cout << "sizeof(A): " << sizeof( A ) << endl; cout << "sizeof(B): " << sizeof( B ) << endl; cout << "sizeof(C): " << sizeof( C ) << endl; return 0; } Thanks in advance. Kind regards.

  • Access virtualhosts over LAN (Also in xpmode (Virtual PC))

    - by Pheter
Hi, I am running Wamp on my computer (the host). I have set up several virtualhosts in apache and they are working fine when I access them from the same computer (host). I have installed Windows XPMode on my computer (which is running windows 7). XPMode (which uses Virtual PC) is set up to use a NAT network. The network in XPMode is working fine, and I can access the host PC via the IP address 192.168.1.5, just as I would if I was using any physical computer on the same network. I can view all the web pages at 192.168.1.5 and it's subdirectories. However, I cannot access any of the subdomains that are configured in the virtualhosts of the host computer. How can I access the subdomains? I don't think that the fact that I am using XPMode and am using a virtualized OS has anything to do with it, but I thought that it was worth mentioning.

  • ASP.Net Application Trust Medium File IO Outside Virtual Directory

    - by Trey Gramann
I am trying to determine how suicidal this is... I have a hosting environment where a custom ASP.Net CMS application needs to access the files in the root folder of a website even though it is in a virtual folder so it can be shared accross many sites. I can modify the Medium trust on the server and came up with this... <IPermission class="FileIOPermission" version="1" Read="$AppDir$;$AppDir$\.." Write="$AppDir$;$AppDir$\.." Append="$AppDir$;$AppDir$\.." PathDiscovery="$AppDir$;$AppDir$\.."/> Oddly enough, it works. Yes, I understand it is doing this for all the Apps. I am a bit at a loss as to easy ways to test what else is being exposed. Feels dangerous. Opinions?

  • virtual function call from base of base

    - by th3g0dr3d
hi, let's say i have something like this (very simplified): <pre><code> class base { void invoke() { this-foo(); } virtual void foo() = 0; }; class FirstDerived : public base { void foo() { // do stuff } }; class SecondDerived : public FirstDerived { // other not related stuff } int main() { SecondDerived *a = new SecondDerived(); a-invoke(); } What i see in the debugger is that base::invoke() is called and tries to call this-foo(); (i expect FirstDerived::foo() to be called), the debugger takes me to some unfamiliar assembly code (probably because it jumped to unrelated areas) and after few lines i get segmentation fault. am i doing something wrong here? :/ thanks in advance
