• Activities In Rational ClearCase

  Hello All, We are thinking of implementing Rational ClearQuest for Change Management and Defect tracking. When we integrate Rational ClearQuest and Rational ClearCase, the activities will be coming from the Rational ClearQuest. Now since the implementation of Rational ClearQuest will take time due to the process, we are thinking of removing the activity creation from the developer side. We are thinking of making the admin create the activities for each developer. Now I have a few concerns, If the admin creates the activities and changes the owner for the activity and the group using the protect command, Is it enough? Would this activity used by other developer too? Since activity is a work can this be shared? I need some clarity on this. Thanks.

• Xcode custom project template creates only references to files

  Hi, I tried to create a custom project template for setting up unit testing. The problem is that when i create a new project based on this template it creates references to the template files : When i edit a file, it changes my template files instead of my actual project files ! When i delete my template, files from my actual project becomes red ! The project template is in : /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/Developer/Library/Xcode/Project Templates/Application/Test-based Application Reading some question on stack overflow i tried to install my template project in /Library/Application Support/Developer/Shared/Xcode/Project Templates But i cannot see my template when i create a new project. • Are government programming jobs good?

  I am a passionate software developer and greatly enjoy programming. However I was recently contacted regarding a developer lead position for a government job at NYC for the fire department. The pay is pretty good, and I would assume the position has good job security and stability. But I am hesitant to even go for an interview as it seems like an exaggerated version of Office Space with a lot of Bureaucracy and mindless paper work. The description is as follows: The Lead Applications Developer, supporting the Programming Group, will be responsible for all phases of the system development life cycle including performing system analysis, requirements definition, database design, preparation of scopes of work, and development of project plans. Supervise programming staff and manage projects involving the design, implementation, maintenance, and enhancement of complex Oracle based user applications using Oracle Development tools. Applications will be deployed using Oracle Application Server utilizing programming languages such as JAVA, JSF, JSP, Oracle ADF, PL/SQL, and XML with J2EE and EJB technology. Anyone with previous government experience can share their two cents on this? Thank you.

• How to remove previous versions of Xcode

  When the 3.2 beta of the iPhone OS first came out, Xcode for 3.2 had to be installed side-by-side with the version for 3.1.2. I installed the new version (3.2) in /Developer and moved 3.1.2 to /Xcode3.1.2. Now I want to get rid of the old version and just use the new one since we can do that now. I ran the uninstall tool at /Xcode3.1.2/Library/uninstall-devtools and uninstall-developer-folder, but the directory still exists and has lots of stuff still in it, adding up to about 5 GB. At this point, am I safe just deleting the folder if I want to totally get rid of it and still use the /Developer folder? (At about 8 GB, it's got lots more in it, but I'm not sure if that's just because it's larger or because the old version was 8 GB before I ran the uninstall tool)?

  Recently a friend of mine had gone from a high level NOC position to a developer. Before that he was just doing the help desk stuff. He has no degree, only the usual MIS/networking certifications and as far as I know only tinkers with code on the weekends. I can see where in some scenarios having a good understanding of configurations, packets, users, OU's, etc would be extremely beneficial to a developer. My question is this, how many full time developers started off this way? Even how many people dual wield the responsibility of developer/systems administrator/network administration?

• Objective-C to Java cross compiler

  It is clear that cross compilers will not be allowed by the Apple App Store, so a developer will need to be familiar with Objective-C to create applications for the iPhone. I was wondering, is there a cross compiler that will take Objective-C application code and rebuild it into a similar Java application that can be packaged for Android? That way, a developer could still learn just one language (obj-c) but put out applications on many devices. I understand that the Java port would be less optimal than a natively coded application, but could conceivably save a developer some time.

• Git merge of same and externally modified file

  I have inherited some code (from zip file) from a developer and git initialzed, made changes and set of check-ins progressively. Now, the same developer released the same code with his changes and gave me the another zip file. How do i merge my changes which i have it my git repo and his recent changes from the second zip file contents? Ideally, i would like to have the code which should be accumalation of both my changes and the developer recent changes. I tried to create branch b1 from my master branch and applied second zip file contents on top of that. committed those files in the branch and did 'git checkout master; git merge b1' - but, i do not get my changes, only his changes in my master branch.

  In TFS 2008, I am trying to modify a build script (TFSBuild.proj). I get the following warning: The element 'PropertyGroup' in namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003' has invalid child element 'TeamProject' in namespace 'http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003'. Which is correct, The element PropertyGroup does indeed have a child called TeamProject. I’m making an assumption that this is caused because of the following line: <Project DefaultTargets="DesktopBuild" xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/developer/msbuild/2003" ToolsVersion="3.5"> The Xml Namespace doesn’t appear to exist as far as I can tell, although it looks like a standard one. Please can anyone tell me if this is a standard XML namespace, how or where I can view its contents and whether the warning that I am seeing may be caused by it?

• Advice needed: What tech expertise do I need to accomplish my goal?

  I have a business plan & money to hire a developer - the essentials involve simple online games for children (played via traditional computer over the internet) such that their scores are uploaded to a database that can be viewed via a nice portal. What I don't know is: what technologies I would want my developer to know (the only somewhat unusual requirement I have is that the games have relatively accurate timing of keypresses/mouse presses) how much I should expect to pay (in general, what is the appropriate range) how many hours a program of the complexity of a simple tower defense -type game should take to develop (to be clear, the idea is not to implement TD, but rather other games of similar complexity) whether I should go with capable acquaintances, some online kind of online web-dev bidding site, or just try to find a capable undergraduate at the local university who I can wow with his/her first big paycheck, how I should communicate the software's specifications to my hired developer... Is there a standard I should be using? whether I should hire a webdev consultant for a few hours to help me answer these questions, instead of asking stackoverflow Thanks for any advice!

  I went to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2010 launch event in Minneapolis yesterday and was slightly surprised by how much they were trotting out SharePoint and improved SharePoint development in Visual Studio 2010. SharePoint is something I've largely ignored over the years as a web developer and solution architect on a small development team. I was always under the impression that SharePoint was used mostly for intranets in large corporations, and that if you were developing for SharePoint, it meant that a corporate decision had been made to use it and you as a developer probably had few (if any) options. I realize this assumption is probably incorrect. So, what are the "cool" uses for SharePoint? What unique business problems have you solved using it? What could make a developer excited to be working on something for SharePoint?

• Xcode / Interface Builder - better workflow from designer to coder?

  Were dealing with some pretty custom UI elements while building our OSX / Cocoa and iPhone / IPad apps. I was wondering if anyone has good recommendations or tricks for getting a better workflow between UI designers and coders while using Xcode / Interface Builder? It seems that many things require programmatic settings with UI editing in Cocoa... if you stray from the pre-built UI elements then you can't really easily drag-drop build a UI... instead we end up handing off a design doc ( photoshop/illustrator ) and then the poor developer has to deal with recreating this masterpiece in code or by using interface builder - usually a combination of both. This work flow is leading us to not so great results and we have to re-iterate around the UI elements to get them to work better. We love CSS and / or Flash designer to developer workflow where the UI could look exactly as it should and the hand off to developer was more seamless. Is there anyone out there who has some tricks - or insights into getting better workflow when using tools like Xcode / Interface Builder and doing Cocoa apps?

  I am validating my site using validator.w3.org and have an issue where there is a & in my link description text. ie this is taken from the source <a class='tag' href='/php/iphone software.php?function=developer&amp;dev=witch%26wizards+inc.&amp;store=143441'>witch&wizards inc.</a> Which gives me this error in the validator Line 188, Column 540: cannot generate system identifier for general entity "wizards" …6wizards+inc.&store=143441'witch&wizards inc. If I urlencode the description then the validation passes, but the user then sees the text displayed urlencoded, ie Developer witch%26wizards+inc. However I believe it's much more user friendly if this was displayed unencoded, ie Developer witch&wizards inc. Is there a way to pass validation but still have user friendly text displayed? • BlazeDS rejected connection from some IP address

  Hi, I'm using the BlazeDS binary version with Apache tomcat 6.0. And it seems there's a developer mode active and it only allows 3 IPs to connect to the application (Server). This is what the log says: [BlazeDS]MessageBroker '__default__' rejected connection from address 'xxx.xxx.xx.x'; Developer mode addresses already in use: xxx.x.xxx.xx, xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, xx.xxx.xxx.xx (IP addresses are masked with 'x' for privacy) I have not added any special configuration to make developer mode active. I couldn't find any resources related to this scenario either. Please help. Thanks in Advance.

• Why does Java not have any destructor like C++?

  Java has its own garbage collection implementation so it does not require any destructor like C++ . This makes Java developer lazy in implementing memory management. And Garbage Collection is very expensive. Still we can have destructor along with garbage collector where developer can free resources and which can save garbage collector's work. This might improves the performance of application. Why does Java not provide any destructor kind of mechanism? Developer does not have control over GC but he/she can control or create object. Then why not give them ability to destruct the objects?

• Migrate a Django project from MySQL to Oracle

  Hi, I have a Django1.1 project that works with a legacy MySQL db. I'm trying to migrate this project to Oracle (xe and 11g). We have two options for the migration: - Use SQL developer to create a migration sql script. - Use Django fixtures. The schema created with the sql script from sql developer doesn't match the schema created from syncdb. For example, Django expects TIMESTAMP columns while sql developer creates DATE columns. Using syncdb with Django fixtures could be great but when trying to load the MySQL fixtures into Oracle, after using syncdb, I'm getting: IntegrityError: ORA-00001: unique constraint (USER.SYS_C004253) violated How can I find what part create the integrity error? • Preventing a Firefox Extension's load event from triggering across tabs

  Hi, I've been working on a Firefox extension that uses an iFrame to do some background scrapping. I have gone through a number of hoops to get it to trigger only once in the window/tab where it should but now when I open a different tab that tab triggers the load event.   hi, 1, I already download the "Apple Worldwide Developer Relations Certification Authority",and add it into my keychain. 2, My team leader already had created two Cers for Mac App store developing, I download and add it into my keychain. 3, I used two methods to sign my add, but failed all. First, add code sign section in my .xcodeproj(3.2.5). Second, I used script: productbuild --component ./bin/MAS_Release/MyApp.app /Applications --sign "3rd Party Mac Developer Application: My Company Co., Ltd." --product ./src/MyApp/MyApp-Info.plist MyApp.pkg But it failed with information: Code Signing Identity '3rd Party Mac Developer Application: My Company Co., Ltd.' does not match any valid, non-expired, code-signing certificate in your keychain. I observed that my certifications in keychain don't have small trangle. how make the small trangle absence?(when I'am importing the Cers from my Agent, it don't have the trangle absence)

  I am new to openERP and facing issues with HR module. I have this structure Project Manager-Team Leader-Developer Team Leader is a manager of developer Project Manager is manager of Team Leader. So, if developer asks for leave then first leave request should be sent to Team Leader (mail notification to Team Leader and Project Manager) and once TL approves Leave then automaitically request sent to Project Manager for second level approval. With openERP 6.1, there is no possibility to approve leave by Team Leader unless and until Team Leader is specified as a HR manager which is inappropriate. Anybody have any solution then let me know. • Continuous integration with multiple branch development

  In the project that I'm working on, we are using SVN with 'Stable Trunk' strategy. What that means is that for each bug that is found, QA opens a bug ticket and assigns it to a developer. Then, a developer fixes that bug and checks it in a branch (off trunk, let's call this the bug branch) and that branch will only contain fixes for that particular bug ticket When we decided to do a release, for each bug fixes that we want to release to the customer, a developer will merge all the fixes from several bug branch to trunk and proceed with the normal QA cycle. The problem is that we use trunk as the codebase for our CI job (Hudson, specifically), and therefore, for all commits to the bug branch, it will miss the daily build until it gets merged to trunk when we decided to release the new version of the software. Obviously, that defeats the purpose of having CI. What is the proper way to fix this issue?
