• How to handle all exceptions in a web java project

  I am doing an web java project about an hotel reservation. I am using, sql, hibernate, java server pages. I want to know how can I redirect an incoming exception to an error.jsp file . There are a lot of java code , and a lot of jsp file. So I want to rederict every exception that I haven't handle to an error page, is there any way to do it ? An exception can come from everywhere and I can't know and handle them all ( for example an user can write to much data in an textfield, and it will generate me an sql exception for data to long) Thank you, sorry for my english.

• Package <blah> does not exist error - NetBeans 6.8 & Windows 7

  I'm using NetBeans 6.8 on Windows 7. I upgraded from WinXP and NetBeans 6.7. Now my existing java web app project is no longer able to import/find the packages I've developed - I receive a 'Package ,blah. does not exist' and yet the packages do exist, worked fine in NetBeans 6.7 and the project still compiles and runs OK. I've tried changing the Java Platform/JDK from 1.6.0_10 back to JDK 1.5.0_22 but I still receive errors package does not exist. All other 'standard' libraries and packages are able to be imported and used OK ... eg Struts, Hibernate

• JAXWS serves only 100 requests, how to configure JAXWS to change it to unlimited?

  Hello, I'm using JAXWS for generating webservices and serving using EndPoint.publish() as well as deploying war file, but as soon as it has served 100 requests it wouldn't return 101st response. How to configure JAXWS to change this count to unlimited? EDIT: solution found, first of all it was not related to JAXWS and I'm sorry for posting it here, in my first impression I thought problem is with JAXWS but after deep exploring and debugging I found problem with my persistence layer (Hibernate) where max number of sessions allowed are 100 by default. Sorry again for making you guys to think which actually does not make sense.

• ORM on iPhone. More simple than CoreData.

  The question is rather simple. I know that there is SQLite. There is Core Data also. But I need something in between. More object-oriented than SQLite API and simplier than Core Data. Main points are: I need access to stored entities only by id. No queries required. I need to store items of a single type, it means that I can use only one table if I choose SQLite. I want automatic object-relational conversion. Or object-storage if the storage is not relational. I can use object archiving, but I have to implement things (NSArchiver). But I want to write some kind of class and get persistence automatically. As it can be done with Hibernate/ActiveRecord/Core Data/etc. Thanks.

• Seam app with JBoss 'minimal' Config?

  I'd like to improve the performance of my Seam apps and JBoss appserver, particularly by removing things that aren't necessary in the standard configuration. Ideally, I'd like to be able to run it using the "minimal" profile. Can anyone give me any guidance as to what is needed to run a Seam app using "minimal"? Here are the kind of things my app requires: JPA, using Hibernate with a PostgreSQL backend EJB3 JSF (RichFaces/Facelets) E-mail, eventually, although not required at this particular moment I'll be developing my app using JBoss Tools on Eclipse, so I would also need anything that is required by the tools for development and deployment. I've found that the default configuration just has too many additional components and features installed by default, and that greatly affects performance when I'm trying to develop. Any help you can give would be great! Thanks!

  Scenario: A fairly mature project uses Struts2 and Spring and Hibernate. I say mature because it has been going on a for a while and there are many struts actions written already. Suppose we wanted to remove Struts2 from the project and instead depend entirely on Spring MVC without rewriting the entire project. Is this something that should even be considered? Are there any migration guides out there? Has anyone done this before and would like to warn me against it?

• What's The Best Object-Relational Mapping Tool For .NET?

  I've worked on a few Java web projects and we've always used Hibernate for our data object layer. I haven't worked on a large scale ASP.NET site and I'm unsure which solution to choose. I'm tempted to try NHibernate, but I don't like the fact that they use so many third party libraries. • HQL - row identifier for pagination

  Does anyone know if HQL has a keyword to identify rows such as ROWID or ROWNUM? I would like to implement pagination with HQL but I am not able to use .setMaxResult() or .setFirstResult() because I don't work with the session object directly and therefore don't use the Query object but simply create my query as a string and use the .find() method. I tried using LIMIT and OFFSET in my query, but HQL seems to be ignoring these keywords and is returning the whole result to me no matter what. I'm also not able to use Hibernate criteria because it does not have support for the "HAVING" clause that appears in my query. My last resort is to restrict the result set using the ROWNUM/ROWID keyword. Does anyone else have any other suggestions?

  I am using N-Hibernate and have a class/table called Boxers I also have a prospect table which tells use if the boxer is a prospect. (this table is one column of just the boxersID) So i Want to get all boxers that are prospects (meaning all boxers that have there id in the prospects table) Public static IQueryable<Boxer> IsProspect(this IQueryable<Boxer> query) { return query.Where(x => x.Prospect != null); } this doesnt trim down my list of boxers to the boxers that are prospect... yet if i debug and look at any boxer it will have True or false next to each one correctly... Why isnt the where clause correctly trimming down the list?

  I want to make sure that during file upload time, only the file of the format jpeg, png and gif are allowed. I'm getting a simple string array back from the server and creating a select with the strings as options. The static fields on the form are validating fine. • Android programming: Authentication and data exchange with Java EE

  I am having a Java application running in a Tomcat server using Spring, Hibernate, etc. and a two web interfaces, one implemented in Tapestry 5 and the other one using Flex with BlazeDS and Spring-BlazeDS. In my first android application I would now like to log in to the server and retrieve some data. I´m wondering how I could achieve this in a secure way. First of all I need to know which technology is the best to retrieve data from the server and how can I restrict the access to users only that have been successfully authenticated. With what I read until now I would try to implement a HTTPServlet on the server and make server calls via HTTP Client. In the servlet I could probably use the HTTPSession to check if the request comes from an authenticated user. And the data I would try to send serialized (JSON). Unfortunately, I´ve never done those things and maybe I´m on the wrong way and there are more comfortable solutions.

  I'm creating a prototype for a java web application. Frontend is a Swing-based java applet. Backend should be a type of web-service, that is called by applet. Backend should run inside a servlet container and should have its own security (username/password) database. I know, that Tomcat has its own user database (realm), but the app should have own. Web-services, in turn, carrying out app logic and database access (via Hibernate). I'm a newbie for a web development and I'm getting lost in a huge amount of the java web frameworks. Even just reading 'introduction' and 'getting started' documents takes a lot of time. So I need an advice which framework(s) are suitable for the task and not very complex for a quick start.   In a web server project with a rich domain model (application logic is in the model, not in the services) how do you handle injecting the dependencies into the model objects? What are your experiences? Do you use some form of AOP? Like Springs @Configurable annotation? Load time or build time weawing? Problems you encountered? Do you use manual injection? Then how do you handle different instantiation scenarios (creating of the objects through an library [like Hibernate], creating objects with "new" ...)? Or do you use some other way of injecting the dependencies?

In the example, all code is inline, but in our real code there is no inline code. Update (29 Sept 09): Some of these answers are well written however they seem to get missing the point of this question: this is simple contrived example to discuss using getters/setters vs variables initializer lists or private validator functions are not really part of this question. I'm wondering if either design will make the code easier to maintain and expand. Some ppl are focusing on the string in this example however it is just an example, imagine it is a different object instead. I'm not concerned about performance. we're not programming on the PDP-11
