• Sharepoint 2010 reacts very badly to having it's IP address changed. How do I fix it?

  I have Sharepoint 2010 set up on a virtual host for prototyping various projects. If I restart the host, the IP changes. Afterwards, SP complains that it can't find it's configuration database. I can't find where it might be storing an IP. To clarify, the URL remains the same - I have a dynamic dns solution in place to handle that. I can't see anything in the web.config files or the database connection strings that would indicate a hardcoded IP. How can I fix this up in less time than re-installing every time I need to do a project?

  I have a domain with a wildcard subdomain entry pointed at IP-A: domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx *.domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx Can I create another CNAME pointing a spcified subdomain at a different IP. Or, rather, if I create such an entry, will it resolve to the 2nd IP?: domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx *.domain-a.com -> xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx thing.domain-a.com -> yyy.yyy.yyy.yyy Will that work? Does it even make sense?

• Is the decision to use SNI or IP based SSL made during cert purchase or cert installation?

  It's time to renew an SSL cert - but the website will soon be moving from a dedicated machine with a fixed IP to a cloud based host behind a load balancer. When I renew or re-purchase my ssl cert do I make the decision about whether it should be an SNI / IP based SSL Cert at the point of purchase - or is a cert a cert and it's all about where and how it's installed? I'm hoping the renewed cert can continue to be IP based for now, and in a few months when the website (and it's domain ofc) moves to the cloud I can re-use the cert in 'SNI mode'

  I have a list of IP addresses on a network, and most of them support multicast DNS. Also the devices don't necessarily broadcast any services, but definitely do support mDNS broadcast. So looking through services won't work.

  Can Mac OS X be setup to automatically configure its Airport interface with a static IP address when connected to a Wifi network with a certain name, and on all other Wifi networks use DHCP? Currently I'm using the "Locations" feature of the "Network" section in System Preferences to manually switch between two IP address setups. I have a "my static IP" setup, and a default "DHCP" setup. However this requires entering System Preferences to change the Location drop-down each time when switching locations. Can this be automated? Preferably this would be done without third-party software.

• Multi-site Drupal install with sites on different ports using Apache ip-based hosting?

  In the past we've used name-based virtual hosting in Apache. We recently converted websites to SSL and had to go the ip-based route. As a result, we currently have an instance that is set up as follows: www.domain.com using port 80 dev.domain.com using port 8080 Both use the same IP. Is this scenario possible using Drupal multi-site functionality? While we find that dev.domain.com works and reads the correct "dev" database (using the dev settings), it reads theme files from the "www" site instead which is not what we want. Is the culprit the dev's htaccess file? Apache is listening on 8080 and does use the proper DB settings, but just not the correct theme files. One other note: browsing dev.domain.com:8080 gives an error: "The page isn't redirecting properly". Should we just purchase a new IP address for the dev website, or would this still not help? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

  Disclaimer On Absence of Code: I have no code to post because I haven't started writing; was looking for more theoretical guidance as I doubt I'll have trouble coding it but am pretty befuddled on what approach(es) would yield best results. I'm not seeking any code, either, though; just direction. Dilemma I'm toying with adding a "magic method"-style feature to a UI I'm building for a client, and it would require intelligently detecting whether or not a string was meant to be JSON as against a simple string. I had considered these general ideas: Look for a sort of arbitrarily-determined acceptable ratio of the frequency of JSON-like syntax (ie. regex to find strings separated by colons; look for colons between curly-braces, etc.) to the number of quote-encapsulated strings + nulls, bools and ints/floats. But the smaller the data set, the more fickle this would get look for key identifiers like opening and closing curly braces... not sure if there even are more easy identifiers, and this doesn't appeal anyway because it's so prescriptive about the kinds of mistakes it could find try incrementally parsing chunks, as those between curly braces, and seeing what proportion of these fractional statements turn out to be valid JSON; this seems like it would suffer less than (1) from smaller datasets, but would probably be much more processing-intensive, and very susceptible to a missing or inverted brace Just curious if the computational folks or algorithm pros out there had any approaches in mind that my semantics-oriented brain might have missed. PS: It occurs to me that natural language processing, about which I am totally ignorant, might be a cool approach; but, if NLP is a good strategy here, it sort of doesn't matter because I have zero experience with it and don't have time to learn & then implement/ this feature isn't worth it to the client.

  I maintain this teapot: It returns a 418 error when it is pinged, and it is pinged regularly by people arriving from the relevant Wikipedia page. (For those interested, and there appear to be a few of you, the relevent story is here) It sits on a shelf in my office in the Computer Science department of a university and the support guys were kind enough to give it a dedicated IP address some years ago. My contract is coming to an end in the next few weeks and it's occurred to me that I'm going to have to do something with the teapot. I'd like to take it home but I have no clue how to explain to my home broadband supplier that I want a dedicated IP address coming to my house so that people can ping a teapot. Is there a reasonable way of having a server on a shelf in my house that people can ping via an IP address? What search terms can I use to find a solution to this problem?

• Apache/Varnish/PHP: Just to confirm, is it possible to automatically update $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] to have the real client's IP?

  I just cannot seem to get the real client IP to show in PHP's $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR']. It shows in $_SERVER['X_FORWARDED_FOR'], but the $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] always points to the Varnish service IP. I've played around with just about every Varnish vcl suggestion I could find. I've installed Apache module mod_rpaf. But I still cannot get $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] to reflect the client's real IP... So my question is, is this even possible? Does everyone who uses Varnish have to do something like this for all PHP applications?: $_SERVER['REMOTE_ADDR'] = $_SERVER['X_FORWARDED_FOR']; Or am I simply not configuring it correctly?

• "Invalid use of Null" when using Str() with a Null Recordset field, but Str(Null) works fine

  I'm banging my head against the wall on this one. I was looking at some old database reporting code written in VB6 and case across this line (the code is moving data from a "source" database into a reporting database): rsTarget!VehYear = Trim(Str(rsSource!VehYear)) When rsSource!VehYear is Null, the above line generates an "Invalid use of Null" run-time error. If I break on the above line and type the following in the Immediate pane: ?rsSource!VehYear It outputs Null. Fine, that makes sense. Next, I try to reproduce the error: ?Str(rsSource!VehYear) I get an "Invalid use of Null" error. However, if I type the following into the Immediate window: ?Str(Null) I don't get an error. It simply outputs Null. If I repeat the same experiment with Trim() instead of Str(), everything works fine. ?Trim(rsSource!VehYear) returns Null, as does ?Trim(Null). No run-time errors. So, my question is, how can Str(rsSource!VehYear) possibly throw an "Invalid use of Null" error when Str(Null) does not, when I know that rsSource!VehYear is equal to Null?

• Solaris 10 invalid ARP requests from 0.0.0.0? Link up/down every hour or 2

  The guys at the data center where I'm hosting a server running Solaris 10 are telling me that my server is making a lot of invalid arp requests. This is an example of a portion of what was sent to me from the logs (with Mac addresses and IP addresses changed). [mymacaddress]/0.0.0.0/0000.0000.0000/[myipaddress]/[Datestamp]) It's being logged every hour. I don't see anything in the arp tables (arp -a) or routing tables (netstat -r) and I don't see anything relating to 0.0.0.0 when snoping the arp requests. The only place I see any reference to 0.0.0.0 is if I do netstat -a for the SCTP SCTP: Local Address Remote Address Swind Send-Q Rwind Recv-Q StrsI/O State ------------------------------- ------------------------------- ------ ------ ------ ------ ------- ----------- 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 0 0 102400 0 32/32 CLOSED But not really sure what that means. Doesn't seem like I can disable SCTP. There are some tunable SCTP parameters but it's not something I'm familiar with. Do I have to add changes to /etc/system? Looks like sctp_heartbeat_interval might be what I need to change? If it makes any difference, I have a few solaris zones running on this server, each with their own IP address on a virtual interface. eth0:0, eth0:1, etc. Does anyone have any idea what might be causing this and how to stop it? I think the switch I'm connected to doesn't like it and momentarily drops the connection. Is there anyway to at least block those requests using ipfilter or something else? Update: This was happening more frequently but now it seems to be happening roughly every hour or every two hours. It's not consistent. I tried setting setting the link speed and duplex to match the switch port and that seemed to make it stop happening for a few hours but then it started again.

  I had recently replaced a failing hard drive on my software raid 1 system with suse 10.1 , and i am checking for any warning messages on " var/log/warn " and i found this message "avahi-daemon[3201]: Invalid query packet." more than 12 times , i am new to these stuff , should i be concerned , is there something wrong with the system , can i check anywhere else to find out if there is any problem with the system.   No obvious problems with my Mac OS X 10.5 system, but Drive Genius 1.5.1 says: "Invalid catalog btree reverse link in node" when doing a "Verify" The "repair" and "rebuild" options fail. I did some googling, and the consensus as: 1- Drive Genius is slightly better than Disk Warrior 2- This problem is likely not fixable. My assumed solution is that I should do a full backup and re-format.

  hostname -f says "hostname: the specified hostname is invalid". The hostname (FQDN) specified in /etc/hostname is also listed in /etc/hosts and is pingable. No actual DNS server yet of the host knows. Is this a reason of the error reported or something else? (the OS is Ubuntu 10.04 Server). Update: registering the host at a DNS server (so that the name can be successfully resolved via Internet) did not help.

  I'm using 64bit Centos Dom0 with: 2.6.18-164.15.1.el5xen #1 SMP Wed Mar 17 12:04:23 EDT 2010 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux recently i migrated some 32bit Centos domUs on this node. As by specs 32bit domUs should work with 64bit dom0. DomUs are paravirtualized, and everything works, except iptables limit.   Hi gurus, I am trying to call a telephone number fro my PC through my ip phone once my application completes its work. So I am searching for a way to access my ip phone from my PC. Please correct me if I am wrong or missing the obvious. On my PC in office selecting a phone in Microsoft office communicator and making calls from PC through my Cisco IP Phone is disabled. Is there any way i can programmatically call a external phone or mobile number from my PC as my ip phone is connected to my PC. I tried out etQuickDial and Make/Drop calls. But I am not able to find the appropriate way or setup to make calls. I also googled for any libraries and i saw some TAPI but was not able to get correct way. Please help me out with this. My cisco ip phone is 7940. My environment is Windows XP. Please let me know if you need more details. No problems with me even if you propose a solution involving coding or a non coding way of downloading and installing any applications. Thanks in advance. If you dont want me to post it here and If I need to put it in super user or server fault or some where else please direct me appropriately. • Server crash = How does a TCP/IP (and the browser-client) behave after this?

  Hello Experts, i would be thankfull for an explanation what happens with HTTP(TCP/IP) transmissions when the server crashes unexpectedly, how does the client Browser (Firefox / IE) handle this event. What happens in the following two standard cases: Clients-actively sends data: The TCP/IP Connection has been estableshed and the Client (Web-Browser) is Sending a POST Request with some data and in the middle of the process of sending the server crashes. What does this mean for the client? As far as I know TCP/IP does not "acknowledge" a send data-package so the client does not know that the server crashed. How will the client behave? (Firefox and Internet Explorer)? The Server is actively sending data: As above the tcp/ip connection has been established and the Server is sending a large website to the client (browser). In the middle of the sending-process the server crashes, so no futher packets are sent. How does the client browser react to this event (Firefox and Interne Expolrer) Thank you very much!! Jens

  The website we running let people register their own URL and redirect to our website to their user account. Lets it is something similar to Blogspot.com where users can have their own URL. The problem is that in order to do this we need to have static IP address for the DNS redirection to work. We can easily get static IP addresses from most hosting companies, but if we change our hosting company it means we will have to force all our users to change their DNS setting to our new IP address. This if very problematic. Is there a way of owning our own IP address that we can take it with us to wherever hosting company we decide to go with? Or there there other easier solutions out there?

My problem is that once I installed my board in a local network and this board will acquire its IP address dynamically, it has to communicate with a client application running on one of the PC(other than DHCP server) in the network.   I'm attempting to rewrite some C# web service code that uses the Windows IP Helper API call "SendARP" to retreive a remote system's MAC address. SendARP works great - until you cross a network segment as Arp requests aren't routed. I've been looking at the "ParseNetworkString" documentation after happening across its existance on StackOverflow.
