• Spatial Rotation in Gmod Expression2.

  I'm using expression2 to program behavior in Garry's mod (http://wiki.garrysmod.com/?title=Wire_Expression2) Okay so, to set the precedent. In Gmod I have a block and I am at a complete loss of how to get it to rotate around the 3 up, down and right vectors (Which are local. ie; if I pitch it 45 degrees the forward vector is 0.707, 0.707, 0). Essentially, From the 3 vectors I'd like to be able to get local Pitch/Roll/Yaw. By Local Pitch Roll Yaw I mean that they are completely independent of one another allowing true 3d rotation. So for example; if I place my craft so its nose is parallel to the floor the X,Y,Z would be 0,0,0. If I turn it parallel to the floor (World and Local Yaw) 90 degrees it's now 0, 0, 90. If I then pitch it (World Roll, Local Pitch) it 180 degrees it's now 180, 0, 90. I've already explored quaternions however I don't believe I should post my code here as I think I was re-inventing the wheel. I know I didn't explain that well but I believe the problem is pretty generic. Any help anyone could offer is greatly appreciated. Oh, I'd like to avoid gimblelock too. Essentially calculating the rotation around each of the crafts up/forward/right vectors using the up/forward/right vectors. To simply the question a generic implementation rather than one specific to Gmod is absolutely fine.

• CakePHP, CodeIgniter or Rails for multi-user Tumblr clone?

  I'm about to start building a tumblr clone that handles multiple users (so premade clones like Gelato won't cut it) and I'm not sure which framework I'd like to build this is. Right now, I'm only intending to build a prototype. Something I can get a dozen friends on to test the concept and grow to maybe a couple hundred users to prove the market, so I'm not worried about long term scale. My biggest concern right now is quick deployment. I'd like to get from zero to signups in as short a time as possible, with as little customization to the framework of choice as possible. I have experience with PHP, but not Ruby. However, I don't think the learning curve would be too steep so I'm not ruling out rails. I just want the framework that is most appropriate for a system like a multi-user tumblr clone so that I can build it with as little hassle, and as quickly, as possible. If anyone has experience with a similar project, or with these frameworks and can offer an insightful perspective, I'd be very appreciative. Thanks for taking the time to read. • Creating Signed URLs for Amazon CloudFront

  Short version: How do I make signed URLs "on-demand" to mimic Nginx's X-Accel-Redirect behavior (i.e. protecting downloads) with Amazon CloudFront/S3 using Python. I've got a Django server up and running with an Nginx front-end. I've been getting hammered with requests to it and recently had to install it as a Tornado WSGI application to prevent it from crashing in FastCGI mode. Now I'm having an issue with my server getting bogged down (i.e. most of its bandwidth is being used up) due to too many requests for media being made to it, I've been looking into CDNs and I believe Amazon CloudFront/S3 would be the proper solution for me. I've been using Nginx's X-Accel-Redirect header to protect the files from unauthorized downloading, but I don't have that ability with CloudFront/S3--however they do offer signed URLs. I'm no Python expert by far and definitely don't know how to create a Signed URL properly, so I was hoping someone would have a link for how to make these URLs "on-demand" or would be willing to explain how to here, it would be greatly appreciated. Also, is this the proper solution, even? I'm not too familiar with CDNs, is there a CDN that would be better suited for this?

  So I'm trying to get some code that is written for gcc to compile on Visual Studio 2008.   I am preparing an offer for a customer. They proide weekly data to different organizations. There is huge amount data suits OLAP that needed to be visualized with charts and pivot tables on web and custom reports will be built by non-it persons (an easy gui). They will enter a date range, location which data columns to be included and generate report and optionally export the data to Excel. They currently prepare reports with MS Excel with Pivot Tables and but they need a better online tool now to show data to their customers. Tables are huge and need of drill-down functionality. My current knowledge Spring, Flex, MySql, Linux. I have some knowledge of PostgreSQL and MSSQL and Windows. What is the easiest way of doing this project. Do you think that SSRP (haven't tried yet) and ASP.NET better suits for this kind of job. Actually I prefer open source solutions. Flex have OLAP Data Grid control which do aggregation on client side. JasperServer seems promising but it seems I need enterprise version (multiple organizations and ad hoc queries). What about Modrian + Flex + PostgreSQL solution? Any previous experience will be appreciated. Yes I am confused with options.

  I am passing user defined classes over sockets. The SendObject code is below. Frustrating! Ohh. I think its because the UserData class has a DataSet inside it. Funnily enough I have seen this work, but then after 1 request it goes loopy and I can't get it to work again. Anyone know why this might be? I have looked at comparing the dlls to make sure they are the same on the WebServer and on my local machine and they look to be so as I have turned on versioning in the AssemblyInfo.cs to double check. Edit: Ok it seems that the problem is with size. If I keep it under 1024 byes ( I am guessing here) it works on the web server and doesnt if it has a DataSet inside it.k In fact this is so puzzling I converted the DataSet to a string using ds.GetXml() and this also causes it to blow up. :( So it seems that across the network something with my sockets is wrong and doesn't want to read in the data. • How to have Android Service communicate with Activity

  I'm writing my first Android application and trying to get my head around communication between services and activities. I have a Service that will run in the background and do some gps and time based logging. I will have an Activity that will be used to start and stop the Service. So first, I need to be able to figure out if the Service is running when the Activity is started. There are some other questions here about that, so I think I can figure that out (but feel free to offer advice). My real problem: if the Activity is running and the Service is started, I need a way for the Service to send messages to the Activity. Simple Strings and integers at this point - status messages mostly. The messages will not happen regularly, so I don't think polling the service is a good way to go if there is another way. I only want this communication when the Activity has been started by the user - I don't want to start the Activity from the Service. In other words, if you start the Activity and the Service is running, you will see some status messages in the Activity UI when something interesting happens. If you don't start the Activity, you will not see these messages (they're not that interesting). It seems like I should be able to determine if the Service is running, and if so, add the Activity as a listener. Then remove the Activity as a listener when the Activity pauses or stops. Is that actually possible? The only way I can figure out to do it is to have the Activity implement Parcelable and build an AIDL file so I can pass it through the Service's remote interface. That seems like overkill though, and I have no idea how the Activity should implement writeToParcel() / readFromParcel(). Is there an easier or better way? Thanks for any help.

I assume since it's returning dictionaries, I need a key to get at the values - but where's the key defined? Is that the "id requestedValue = nil" line? If so, how does "requestedValue" become the key? Xcode gives me a compiler warning about an unused variable at the "requestedValue" declaration. I feel like I'm missing something here.   I have a very large photo gallery with thousands of similar people, objects, locations, things. The majority of the people in the photos have their own user accounts and avatar photos to match. There are also logical short lists of people potentially in the photo based on additional data available for each photo. I allow users to tag photos with their friends and people they know but an automated process would be better. I've used photo tagger/finder from face.com integrating with Facebook photos and the Google Picasa photo tagger for personal albums also does the same thing and is exactly what I'm looking to do. Is there a PHP script, API for Google Picasa, face.com or other recognition service or any other open source project that provides server-side facial recognition and/or grouping photos by similarity? • AdMob ad in iPhone app makes App content disappear when "done" is pressed!

  Hello All, When I return from an adMob ad by hitting "done" the content of my app has disappeared ! All that remains is a background image I had attached directly to the main window. Oddly I can still hear the result of my touch events from my main screen (which is now gone). This may be related to the issue some people have had regarding a 20 pixel move involving the toolbar...I see something to that effect as the ad starts to overlay. I have admob in another app that is working fine, and I notice when the ad opens in that app the ad content fills the whole screen EXCEPT the top toolbar (it starts right under it). In the new app I'm working on right now this isn't the case. When the ad starts to open I see the tool bar vanish, then the add comes in and fills the entire screen (including the area where the tool bar was); then when I click done and the the ad goes away everything under it is gone as well. It may be worth noting that the App I had working was 2.x and the current app is 3.x (and thus using the admob 3.0 libraries). This is very odd and deal-breaking; I need help ASAP The relevant part of my view hierarchy is as follows: AppDelegate - ViewController - MainView (Ad is in here) There are also some other Views that are children of the ViewController and a UITabbar is also a subview of the ViewController (programmatically declared, not a UITabBar Controller). Any help you can offer would be extremely appreciate...I need to resolve this issue ASAP, release in two days! Thanks!!

• How to prevent MDI main form closing from MDI Child.

  Hello! I have a MDI main form. On it I host a form, and I want it to show a message box before it closes (asking the user whether to save changes). So far so good, however I have discovered that closing the MDI main form does not raise a MDI child FormClosing event. I figured I will just call MdiChild.Close() in the MDI main's FormClosing event (which does get raised). This seams to work, however it does causes a problem... In the messagebox that I show, I offer the user to save changes, not to save changes and cancel closing. Normally this works fine, however I can't seem to find a way to cancel MDI main's FormClosing event. Is there a elegant way of doing this? EDIT: I solved this by throwing an exception (when user decides to cancel the closing procedure) which is caught in MDI main's FormClosing event. In this way I know when I have to cancel the MDI main's FormClosing event and this seams to work fine ... However I just can't believe that this "hax" is the only way of doing this. Surely there is a better way?

• Debugging SIGABRT within NSManagedObjectContext -save:

  From inside NSManagedObjectContext -save: I am getting this message: Assertion failed: (_Unwind_SjLj_Resume() can't return), function _Unwind_SjLj_Resume, file /SourceCache/libunwind/libunwind-24.1/src/Unwind-sjlj.c, line 326. Program received signal: “SIGABRT”. warning: Unable to read symbols for /Developer/Platforms/iPhoneOS.platform/DeviceSupport/4.2.1 (8C148)/Symbols/Developer/usr/lib/libXcodeDebuggerSupport.dylib (file not found). This happens when I delete an Experiment object with to-many with Run which has to-many with Sample which has to-one with Data. Experiment also has to-many with Page which has to-many with Display which has to-many to Run. I mention this to point out the cyclical nature of the graph. Here is a simplified graph of model: I had been using Delete Rules but have now switched to "No Action" delete rules in combination with -prepareForDeletion methods for all of these classes. This change made no difference. In both cases, the error message is the same. Interestingly, when I relaunch the app, all the objects that were marked for deletion have been deleted. Also, if an Experiment has no Run objects, then deletion works without incidence. For that matter, deleting a single Run from an Experiment also works. I am hoping that someone has seen something like this and can offer advice on what would cause this. Or, if someone has advice on how to get libXcodeDebuggerSupport.dylib for iOS 4.2.1, that might also be helpful. Update: I followed advice found here and was able to get Xcode to find libXcodeDebuggerSupport.dylib for iOS 4.2.1. But this did not help at all in diagnosing problem - which persists.

• Maths Question: number of different permutations

  This is more of a maths question than programming but I figure a lot of people here are pretty good at maths! :) My question is: Given a 9 x 9 grid (81 cells) that must contain the numbers 1 to 9 each exactly 9 times, how many different grids can be produced. The order of the numbers doesn't matter, for example the first row could contain nine 1's etc. This is related to Sudoku and we know the number of valid Sudoku grids is 6.67×10^21, so since my problem isn't constrained like Sudoku by having to have each of the 9 numbers in each row, column and box then the answer should be greater than 6.67×10^21. My first thought was that the answer is 81! however on further reflection this assume that the 81 number possible for each cell are different, distinct number. They are not, there are 81 possible numbers for each cell but only 9 possible different numbers. My next thought was then that each of the cells in the first row can be any number between 1 and 9. If by chance the first row happened to be all the same number, say all 1s, then each cell in the second row could only have 8 possibilites, 2-9. If this continued down until the last row then number of different permutations could be calculated by 9^2 * 8^2 * 7^2 ..... * 1^2. However this doesn't work if each row doesn't contain 9 of the same number. It's been quite a while since I studied this stuff and I can't think of a way to work it out, I'd appreciate any help anyone can offer.

• ASP.NET MVC: null reference exception using HtmlHelper.TextBox and custom model binder

  I have written a class which implements IModelBinder (see below). This class handles a form which has 3 inputs each representing parts of a date value (day, month, year). I have also written a corresponding HtmlHelper extension method to print out three fields on the form. When the day, month, year inputs are given values which can be parsed, but a seperate value fails validation, all is fine - the fields are repopulated and the page served to the user as expected. however when an invalid values are supplied and a DateTime cannot be parsed, i return an arbitrary DateTime so that the fields will be repopulated when returned to the user. I read up on similar problems people have had and they all seemed to be due to lack of calling SetModelValue(). I need to calculate following formula $result=$Arr1['weight'][$index]*$Arr1Coeff+$Arr2['weight'][$index]*$Arr2Coeff; where $Arr1['uid']=$Arr2['uid']. So when $Arr1['uid'] doesn't exists in $Arr2 then we need to omit $Arr2 and vice versa. • Touch friendly GUI in Windows Mobile

  I'm porting an audio processing application written in C++ from Windows to Windows Mobile (version 5+). Basically what I need to port is the GUI. The application is quite complicated and the GUI will need to be able to offer a lot of functionality. I would like to create a touch friendly user interface that also looks good. Which basically means that standard WinMo controls are out the window. I've looked at libraries such as Fluid and they look like something I would like to use. However, as I said I'm developing i C++. Even though it would be possible to only write the GUI part i some .NET language I rather not. My experience with .NET on Windows Mobile is that it doesn't work very well... Can anyone either suggest a C/C++ touch friendly GUI library for Windows Mobile or some kind of "best practices" document/how-to on how to use the standard Windows Mobile controls in order to make the touch friendly and also work and look well in later versions of Windows Mobile (in particular version 6.5)?

• Scalable / Parallel Large Graph Analysis Library?

  I am looking for good recommendations for scalable and/or parallel large graph analysis libraries in various languages. The problems I am working on involve significant computational analysis of graphs/networks with 1-100 million nodes and 10 million to 1+ billion edges. The largest SMP computer I am using has 256 GB memory, but I also have access to an HPC cluster with 1000 cores, 2 TB aggregate memory, and MPI for communication. I am primarily looking for scalable, high-performance graph libraries that could be used in either single or multi-threaded scenarios, but parallel analysis libraries based on MPI or a similar protocol for communication and/or distributed memory are also of interest for high-end problems. Target programming languages include C++, C, Java, and Python. My research to-date has come up with the following possible solutions for these languages: C++ -- The most viable solutions appear to be the Boost Graph Library and Parallel Boost Graph Library. I have looked briefly at MTGL, but it is currently slanted more toward massively multithreaded hardware architectures like the Cray XMT. C - igraph and SNAP (Small-world Network Analysis and Partitioning); latter uses OpenMP for parallelism on SMP systems. Java - I have found no parallel libraries here yet, but JGraphT and perhaps JUNG are leading contenders in the non-parallel space. Python - igraph and NetworkX look like the most solid options, though neither is parallel. There used to be Python bindings for BGL, but these are now unsupported; last release in 2005 looks stale now. Other topics here on SO that I've looked at have discussed graph libraries in C++, Java, Python, and other languages. However, none of these topics focused significantly on scalability. Does anyone have recommendations they can offer based on experience with any of the above or other library packages when applied to large graph analysis problems? Performance, scalability, and code stability/maturity are my primary concerns. Most of the specialized algorithms will be developed by my team with the exception of any graph-oriented parallel communication or distributed memory frameworks (where the graph state is distributed across a cluster).

• Recommended (remote) backup technique for SQL Compact?

  Hello. Is there a generally recommended approach to backing up an SQL CE/SQLite database over the Internet? The client source is .NET/Windows based, the backup destination runs Ubuntu. I am using a small SQL CE database and have been trying to figure out the most reasonable approach to doing this. The file size (in terms of transfer time/bandwidth) isn't a big deal. I had a look around, and so far the things I've given thought are: Online backup services (Dropbox, Mozy) Opening an FTP/SFTP connection Writing a custom protocol with public/private keys Unsure regarding #1 because I doubt they would like it if somebody transferred gigabytes of data using a POST; and they do not seem to offer native (or .NET) APIs. FTP/SFTP seems risky in terms of security and privileges (as the password/key would need to be stored on the client side). With the right user group/user privileges this may work. • REST API Best practice: How to accept as input a list of parameter values

  Hi All, We are launching a new REST API and I wanted some community input on best practices around how we should have input parameters formatted: Right now, our API is very JSON-centric (only returns JSON). The debate of whether we want/need to return XML is a separate issue. As our API output is JSON centric, we have been going down a path where our inputs are a bit JSON centric and I've been thinking that may be convenient for some but weird in general. For example, to get a few product details where multiple products can be pulled at once we currently have: http://our.api.com/Product?id=["101404","7267261"] Should we simplify this as: http://our.api.com/Product?id=101404,7267261 Or is having JSON input handy? More of a pain? We may want to accept both styles but does that flexibility actually cause more confusion and head aches (maintainability, documentation, etc.)? A more complex case is when we want to offer more complex inputs. For example, if we want to allow multiple filters on search: http://our.api.com/Search?term=pumas&filters={"productType":["Clothing","Bags"],"color":["Black","Red"]} We don't necessarily want to put the filter types (e.g. productType and color) as request names like this: http://our.api.com/Search?term=pumas&productType=["Clothing","Bags"]&color=["Black","Red"] Because we wanted to group all filter input together. In the end, does this really matter? It may be likely that there are so many JSON utils out there that the input type just doesn't matter that much. I know our javascript clients making AJAX calls to the API may appreciate the JSON inputs to make their life easier. Thanks, Will

• iPhone offline reading

  Hi, first of all - I am quite new to iPhone App development (3 months). I am working for a software company that offers a content management system. Our customers are for the main part publishing houses for magazines. They use our software to write articles to their homepages. Now we want to offer iPhone Applications to go with our cms. What I have accomplished so far is an RSS reader that shows newly published articles in a list view. The user selects one article and is redirected to a specially formatted detail view of this article. The next step is to add offline reading capabilities. I have searched the internet up and down but couldn't find anything like a best practice for that. I get it that there are two possibilities in general: Store the contents of the uiwebview locally on the iPhone/iPad (including css, images, js and so on). There would be the need to rework the basic html to use the downloaded css, images and js. Also I would have to somehow edit hyperlinks to following pages in multipage articles - Sounds like a lot of work ;) Create a PDF on the server side and download that to the mobile device. Rework the RSS Source to point to the locally saved pdf instead of the website on the server. My question is - what is the better way to go? Are there any downsides for either of the possibilities? Are there other (simple ;)) ways to implement offline reading features? Are there possibly any howto's that I could've missed? Thanks y'all!

I have tried writing db.articles.find( {'tags': 'geography'} ), but that doesn't appear to work. I've also thought about changing the search parameter to 'tags.geography', but am having a devil of a time figuring out what the search predicate would be.

• Before data is entered, is there a way to make a grouped table graphic placeholder?

  I have a grouped table with 3 sections, each section with a title. The 1st and 3rd sections always have only 1 row of information so before any user data is entered, I just put some words like "Enter Data Here..." as placeholder text. This text is edited (replaced) by the user with their own actual data. No problem. The 2nd section however will contain several rows of information entered by user and I'd prefer not to enter placeholder data in row 0, having the user Edit the first row of data then Add subsequent rows. If the numberOfRowsInSection is set to 0, the title for the 3rd section comes close to the title for the 2nd section and it looks ugly. The best that I could come with, and I don't know to do it, is to have a fake graphic placeholder on the striped background (between the 2nd and third titles) that looks like a single row in the 2nd section, put "Enter Data Here..." text in the graphic, and then the first row of actual data entered and all subsequent rows will cover it up. Can anyone tell me how to do this or offer a better suggestion. Thanks.
