• Change the location of the System Temp directory on Windows 2003 Server

  In order to update an application on a Windows 2003 Server box, the application calls for 2.0 GB of free space in the System's Temp directory. The OS is on C:\ , and there is only 1 GB of free space there.... The server has a RAID configuration for its data on the system's E:\ . There is over 100GB of free space on E:\ . When I did a set tmp I found that the system's TEMP directory is not surprisingly located on C:\ .... TMP = C:\DOCUME~1\ADMINI~1.DES\LOCALS~1\Temp I assume it is possible to change the System Temp directory to the be located on E:\ ? How is this done, where's a good place to stick it, and is it safe to do this ?

• Vista won't boot - just get black screen

  When I boot into Windows Vista (Ultimate), I just get a black screen (with the mouse visible and working). If I run in safe mode, it seems to pause for a while when loading crcdisk.sys. A lot of research says it could be a problem with the hard drive, but I dual boot Ubuntu and that works fine and I can still see and use the Windows partition absolutely fine from Ubuntu. I tried using the "startup repair" option on the Vista install disk but it didn't detect any problems. I have run chkdsk several times, with this: chkdsk C: /f /r And also drive D (the recycle bin). The first two times it detected and fixed errors on the C drive but now it doesn't detect any errors. Is there anything else that could be causing this problem?

  Hi I've searched around a lot, and tried various tweaks to .htaccess files to try to turn off mod_security for a particular cgi script (uber uploader) but it doesn't seem to have any effect. The most popular one I see rehashed all over the web is: # Turn off mod_security filtering. SecFilterEngine Off # The below probably isn't needed, # but better safe than sorry. SecFilterScanPOST Off Which looks relative simple to me - if "SecFilterEngine" is in some way related to mod_security of course. Shame it has absolutely no effect! Does anyone have a suggested way I can simply disable it for a request to any file in my cgi-bin directory?

  Hi all : I am preparing for a Linux terminal assessment now, I tried to Google and found most resources are referring to the basic "grep" rather than the more powerful "egrep" -- well, that is at least what the professor said in lecture. I am always working with small samples so performance tuning is a thing too far away. So basically I'd like to know are there any areas where I must switch to egrep to do it in a better way? Is it safe to work with basic "grep" as for now? will there be potential risks? Sorry about my limited knowledge on Linux shell commands, the man page looks like a maze to me and honestly I haven't put much time in understanding all the features both command provide.

  I have a new Alienware M17x running Vista x64. I just found out that it came with a misterious "EISA Configuration" partition. On Disk Management, my Disk 0 tells me that my HD has about 300 GB. The EISA partition has 12 GB. That's big enough to know why is it there. So, this is more of a bundle question. What is this "EISA Configuration" partition? Is it safe to remove it somehow? If so, how can I delete it? I mean join it with the primary partition, or set it as a secondary small partition.

  I have a BSOD on windows 7 with SSD during boot after improper shutdown (while windows animation logo is moving). The computer restart imediatly after BSOD, and windows proposes to launch startup repair (if i do it, it takes +-5min and fixes the problem : computer starts normally). However, after any new improper shutdown, i got the same problem. Remarks: If i unplug, re-plug the SSD whyle system is shutdown, i have the same problem.   Hello, My client has one machine with Windows 2008 R2 and everything on it. By everything I mean AD, DNS, SharePoint 2010 Standard, Exchange 2010 Standard, Terminal Services, Office 2010 and a bunch of additional apps. Everything stands on I7 x 2 and 36gb ram for 7 people total. I've decided that we should virtualize it and split things into 4 VM's and keep host only with Hyper-V installed to host all the machines. What problems should I expect? What good advices can you give. My plan is that when i move everything to VM's i will move vm's to safe place and format the host as it has a lot of really bad things happening on it. But this also means that everything will be wiped from current solution so I have to be sure that Exchange etc will work when host gets wiped. MadBoy

• Mass remove passwords from rar archives

  Is there a way to (I'm using WinRAR; demo, but I'm willing to change it to whatever is needed) mass remove passwords from a bunch of files ? Problem description: for reasons unknown to me, some archiving was done for two-and-something years in RAR format, and all archives have passwords. I have a list of them, them all being similar (mostly something like John-03, John-04, John-05 ... e.g. name-month ...) but I need to manipulate the files at large, and it is a real problem removing and or dearchiving all those files, while entering passwords manually. What would be my best options concerning ? Ideally, I'm looking for some kind of archiver which tries out a predefined list of passwords, and asks only if non of them cracks the safe. Afaik, WinRAR has no such feature.

• UFW: force traffic thru OpenVPN tunnel / do not leak any traffic

  I have VPN access using OpenVPN and try to create a safe machine that does not leak traffic over non-VPN interfaces. Using the firewall UFW I try to achieve the following: Allow Access from LAN to the machine's web-interface Otherwise only allow Traffic on tun0 (OpenVPN-Tunnel interface when established) Reject (or forward?) any traffic over other interfaces Currently I am using the following rules (sudo ufw status): To Action From -- ------ ---- 192.168.42.11 9999/tcp ALLOW Anywhere # allow web-interface Anywhere on tun0 ALLOW Anywhere # out only thru tun0 Anywhere ALLOW OUT Anywhere on tun0 # in only thru tun0 My problem is that the machine is initially not able to establish the OpenVPN-connection since only tun0 is allowed, which is not yet established (chicken-egg-problem) How do I allow creating the OpenVPN connection and from this point onward force every single packet to go thru the VPN-tunnel?

• Is there a command line (or autohotkey) way of dismounting a USB drive?

  I find dismounting a USB drive takes far too many mouse clicks for my liking. Is there are command line way of doing it (XP and Vista)? Addition I have an eye condition that makes hand mouse coordination difficult so any suggestion that there aren't too many clicks will be downvoted as not answering my question. However I use AutoHotkey a lot and one use case would be to call it from an AHK script. So if there is a way to code it in AHK that will do. Added this to the tags. Further question - is it safe to remove a disk when the computer is a. on Standby or b. Hibernated. I recall that W2000 got uspet if you pulled a disk from a hibernated machine. Or is it better to explicitly dismount or sync before you hibernate or standby - prabably in a script.

  I have a Time Capsule that I'm using for my backups. I have a network volume (coincidentally on the same time capsule) that I'd like to back up as well. How can I tell Time Machine to back up network volumes in addition to my main laptop hard drive? PS: yes, I know this setup isn't ideal. It'll incur 2x network overhead when backing up the network volume, plus my data won't be safe in the event of a drive failure since both copies will be on the same disk. • Transfer nearly an entire file system to a fresh install as smoothly as possible

  I've got a friend who needs his computer working in just a few hours. His files are safe, however, he managed to corrupt his main install of Windows 7. My plan is to go in with a Linux disk, copy his C:\ do a backup drive I've got and then reinstall. Restoring many of his files will be pretty simple (such as documents and such), however, things such as applications won't transfer as easily. Is there any easy way to transfer applications such as MS Office (which he needs in the morning) or other commercial software packages without having to go through the hassle of locating the keys and reinstalling them completely? I don't think just moving them over will work just because of the fact that I'm sure much of that is stored in the registry (validation stuff and such). Anyways, quick responses would be super nice! Also, additional help would be great!

• How can I find out which driver/file is being loaded when the system hangs during the Windows 7 boot

  My desktop computer (1 OS, 1 drive, 1 partition) hangs during the Windows 7 boot process. When selecting F8 I can select Safe Boot which allows me to see the files processed during the boot process. I know that the last line displayed is the last file that was SUCCESFULLY loaded. How do I find out what the next line, and the potential candidate driver/file/program would have been? The unusual thing, at least in my experience, is that the freezing up of the system also happens when I boot from the Windows 7 install disks, which is preventing me from any repair options. With a failure of both, I cannot not restore Windows 7 to a previous date or uninstall drivers/programs that may be the cause of the hanging. Thanks for your responses. Marc

Network congestion for one. If I choose a server that has multiple addresses e.g. google.com the length of physical link may differ from time to time ?   Hello there, We have a RAID 5 setup with 3 SATA disks, #2 went down as reported on the pre-POST screen. Unfortunately, for some reason out of my control, the system was rebooted with a degraded RAID :-O Windows XP (64-bit) loaded, CHKDSK ran automatically and done its recovery! From that point onwards, the following error prompts every time even in Safe Mode: lsass.exe - The endpoint format is invalid I took those 3 disks to the data recovery expert and need to wait at least 2-4 days for results. There are 2 VMs on multiple files stored in this RAID 5 array, and there's no backup! Sorry, I just inherited the system from an ex-staff who has left the company 2 months before I joined. How likely the data can be recovered?

• My computer resets when i try to install Windows 7 (USB/DVD)

  I had a troublesome software starting up when Windows 7 was starting and i had no way to remove it because i couldn't log in to Windows. Not even safe mode. But i used Hiren's Boot CD to edit the registry to stop that software from starting up... But my efforts were not useful as Windows kept on going to an ultimate freeze just before the login screen should have been shown. And just freezes and I cannot do anything. So i decided heck with it and i now want to format the disk and reinstall a fresh copy of Windows 7. But now regardless of USB or DVD i use to boot the setup, it loads fine till you see the animating Windows and it just resets the laptop! Just plain resets! Hiren's Boot CD and Mini XP, strange enough but still works :( Any ideas what might be causing the laptop to reset in Windows 7 setup?

• Weird problem, special characters after formatting the hard drive, computer not starting 0_o

  Hya friends , Last night my computer was working fine. But today when i came back from college and started it , it was starting fine but after sometime it's getting restarted , again and again getting restarted at different points , so i tried to boot it in safe mode but same problem. Now after all this , i finally decided to format the drive C (it is in 80 GB) and load new OS windows XP3. After formatting and loading xp3 sufficient files , when it was getting rebooted for copying the actual os files , it hung and a weird screen came.
