• Time to stop using &ldquo;Execute Package Task&rdquo;&ndash; a way to execute package in SSIS catalog taking advantage of the new project deployment model ,and the logging and reporting feature

  I set out to find a way to dynamically call package in SSIS 2012.  The following are 2 excellent blogs I found; I used them heavily.  The code below has some addition to parameter types and message types, but was made essentially derived entirely from the blogs. http://sqlblog.com/blogs/jamie_thomson/archive/2011/07/16/ssis-logging-in-denali.aspx http://www.ssistalk.com/2012/07/24/quick-tip-run-ssis-2012-packages-synchronously-and-other-execution-options/   The code: Every package will be called by a PackageController package.  The packageController is initialized with some information on which package to run and what information to pass in.   The following is the stored procedure called from the “Execute SQL Task”.  Here is the highlight of the stored procedure It takes in packageName, project name, and folder name (folder in SSIS project deployment to SSIS catalog) The stored procedure sets the package variables of the upcoming package execution Execute package in SSIS Catalog Get the status of the execution.  Also, if exists, get the error message’s message_id and store them in the management database. • Watchguard SSLVPN user connection issue

  I have a user that needs access to our SSLVPN on our Watchguard firewall from his company issued laptop. The problem is when he tries to connect as himself he cannot connect. If I login to the machine it works fine, if I add him to the domain admins group in Active Directory it works fine… So, we know it is an access issue but I cannot figure out what access he needs. He is in the SSLVPN-Users group which I thought would give them all the access they needed but apparently not… Here is the output of the SSLVPN Logs when trying to connect: 2012-09-14T15:40:55.834 Launching WatchGuard Mobile VPN with SSL client. • Apache is reponding a blank white page

  I have the following situation: A site hosted in apache 2.4, with ssl, that works like a charm for a while now, but out of no where, without modifications to the site, apache started serving random blank pages. The workaround this is to delete the cookies of the browser or restart the browser. I've switched the vitualhost to log in debug mode but it didn't got me anywhere. • Unable to execute gs program: No such file or directory

  I've setup CUPS + Avahi on my NAS box in order to enable AirPrint with my existing network printer. Printing a test page via CUPS and printing us lp works fine, and I am able to see my printer on the printer list on my iOS device. However when sending a print job from my iOS device the printer status is set to paused and doesnt print anything. When checking the error_logs I have found this line which I believe is causing the error.   I am getting confused about this setup that I am trying to deploy. I hope someone of you folks can lend me a hand: much much appreciated. Background info Server is Debian 6.0, ext3, with Apache2/SSL and Nginx at the front as reverse proxy. I need to provide sftp access to the Apache root directory (/var/www), making sure that the sftp user is chrooted to that path with RWX permissions. Sftp user is in the www-data group but permissions in /var/www are read/read+x for the group bit so... It doesn't work. I've also tried with ACL, but as I apply ACL RWX permissions for the sftp user to /var/www (dirs and files recursively), it will change the unix permissions as well which is what I don't want. What can I do here? I was thinking I could enable the user www-data to login as sftp, so that it'll be able to modify files/dirs that www-data owns in /var/www. But for some reason I think this would be a stupid move securitywise.

  I want redirect my web site http request to https my web site is https://test my apache is version 2.4 and ssl configration is (ssl.conf) on separate file from httpd.conf and I am not using .htaccess file so where I should append. i have tried on both file but didn't work. Redirect permanent / https://test is that should be on my httpd.conf or ssl.conf or did I miss something else. I prefer to use redirect over rewrite. When during testing, something was not right and the content of the application needs to be changed. The distribution point keeps on serving the old content to the clients. I was wondering what the proper procedure is for updating the DP's when the content of an application changes. I have tried redistributing to the distribution points and deleting old revisions but to no avail.

  For the record, this can be just as easily done with a .NET class with a DLL call.  The two major reasons for this ending up as a SSIS package are: There are a lot of SQL resources for maintenance, but not as many .NET developers.   Hi All, I have a maintenance plan that looks like this... Client 1 Import Data (Success) -> Process Data (Success) -> Post Process (Completion) -> Next Client Client 2 Import Data (Success) -> Process Data (Success) -> Post Process (Completion) -> Next Client Client N ... Import Data and Process Data are calling jobs and Post Process is an Execute Sql task. If Import Data or Process Data Fail, it goes to the next client Import Data... Both Import Data and Process Data are jobs that contain SSIS packages that are using the built-in SQL logging provider. My expectation with the configuration as it stands is: Client 1 Import Data Runs: Failure - Client 2 Import Data | Success Process Data Process Data Runs: Failure - Client 2 Import Data | Success Post Process Post Process Runs: Completion - Success or Failure - Next Client Import Data This isn't what I'm seeing in my logs though... I see several Client Import Data SSIS log entries, then several Post Process log entries, then back to Client Import Data! Arg!! What am I doing wrong? I didn't think the "success" piece of Client 1 Import Data would kick off until it... well... succeeded aka finished! The logs seem to indicate otherwise though... I really need these tasks to be consecutive not concurrent. Is this possible? Thanks!

• Tool for generating flat files from SQL objects dynamically

  Hello! I'm looking for a tool or component that generates flat files given a SQL Server's query result (from a stored procedure or a SELECT * over a table or view). This will be a batch process which runs every day, and every day a new file is created. I could use SQL Server Integration Services (DTS), but I have a mandatory requirement: the output of the file need to be dynamic. If a new column is added in my query result, the file must have this new column too, without having to modify my SSIS package. If a column is removed, then the flat file no longer will have it. I’ve tried to do this with SSIS, but when I create a new package I need to specify the number of columns. Another requirement is configuring the format of the output, depending on the data type of the column. If it’s a datetime, the format needs to be YYYY-MM-DD. If it’s a float, then I need to use 2 decimal digits, and so on. Does anyone know a tool that does this job? Thanks

• Java Logger API

  This is a more like a tip rather than technical write up and serves as a quick intro for newbies. The logger API helps to diagnose application level or JDK level issues at runtime. There are 7 levels which decide the detailing in logging (SEVERE, WARNING, INFO, CONFIG, FINE, FINER, FINEST). Its best to start with highest level and as we narrow down, use more detailed logging for a specific area. SEVERE is the highest and FINEST is the lowest. This may not make sense until we understand some jargon. The Logger class provides the ability to stream messages to an output stream in a format that can be controlled by the user. What this translates to is, I can create a logger with this simple invocation and use it add debug messages in my class: import java.util.logging.*; private static final Logger focusLog = Logger.getLogger("java.awt.focus.KeyboardFocusManager"); if (focusLog.isLoggable(Level.FINEST)) { focusLog.log(Level.FINEST, "Calling peer setCurrentFocusOwner}); LogManager acts like a book keeper and all the getLogger calls are forwarded to LogManager. The LogManager itself is a singleton class object which gets statically initialized on JVM start up. More on this later. If there is no existing logger with the given name, a new one is created. If there is one (and not yet GC’ed), then the existing Logger object is returned. By default, a root logger is created on JVM start up. All anonymous loggers are made as the children of the root logger. Named loggers have the hierarchy as per their name resolutions. Eg: java.awt.focus is the parent logger for java.awt.focus.KeyboardFocusManager etc. Before logging any message, the logger checks for the log level specified. If null is specified, the log level of the parent logger will be set. However, if the log level is off, no log messages would be written, irrespective of the parent’s log level. All the messages that are posted to the Logger are handled as a LogRecord object.i.e. FocusLog.log would create a new LogRecord object with the log level and message as its data members). The level of logging and thread number are also tracked. LogRecord is passed on to all the registered Handlers. Handler is basically a means to output the messages. The output may be redirected to either a log file or console or a network logging service. The Handler classes use the LogManager properties to set filters and formatters. During initialization or JVM start up, LogManager looks for logging.properties file in jre/lib and sets the properties if the file is provided. An alternate location for properties file can also be specified by setting java.util.logging.config.file system property. This can be set in Java Control Panel ? Java ? Runtime parameters as -Djava.util.logging.config.file = <mylogfile> or passed as a command line parameter java -Djava.util.logging.config.file = C:/Sunita/myLog The redirection of logging depends on what is specified rather registered as a handler with JVM in the properties file. java.util.logging.ConsoleHandler sends the output to system.err and java.util.logging.FileHandler sends the output to file. File name of the log file can also be specified. • RouterOS on Hyper-V (v3/2012) - any way to get it working?

  Trying to set up a small VPN point to connect into a remote Hyper-V cluster using ROuterOS. Anyone got it working ON Hyper-V with the latest builds of RouterOS? It seems the legacy network adapter is not supported anymore either (or just broken). The platform is a Windows Server 2012 RC. This is not a high performance setup - the RouterOS wont do the routing for more than the backend administrative access, and the only real traffic we will see there is when ISO images for new operating systems are uploaded. Otherwise we will have possibly RDP traffic as well as web / http traffioc, but this is internal only (dashboards, some control panel). The server has no public business. So the price for non virtualized network cards is ok for me. After hooking up - ping just does not work. After some time I see in windows (arp -a on the command line), so I know that the Hyper-V side is set up properly. Just no packets arrived. I have turned off all protection on Hyper-V (or : not turned them on), so no MAC spoofing protection etc. in the Advanced page for the legacy adapters. Unless I can get it work I will have to resort to using a windows install as router / VPN endpoint, which introduces another OS into the fabric (we run all routers etc. so far on mikrotik in hardware, which is why I want this one to be RouterOS, too). And no, putting hardware there is NOT an option - the cost would be significant.

• How to auto mark tape as free in DPM 2012?

  I have a backup server running System Center Data Protection Manager 2012, connected to a couple of tape drives (no library). I also have, of course, some tapes. Tape rotation is manual. The tape have been used before, by DPM itself (but the server has been completely rebuilt) and by other backup softwares; they are not emtpy. But they contain no data that DPM knows and/or wants to preserve, so they can be marked as free without having to run forcefreetape.ps1. When a tape is placed into the drive, it is required to perform an inventory, have it recognized as an imported tape and then mark it as free; otherwise DPM will simply refuse to use it. How can I tell DPM to automatically treat those imported tapes as free? And, of course, I do not want to reuse real backup tapes if by chance they get put into the drives before their expiration date, so the solution should mark imported tapes as free, but should not do the same with real, non-expired tapes.

  I have a SSIS package I am trying to schedule. I create a new job under SQL Server Agent. On the Command line tab of the jobstep, I choose "Edit the command-line manually". The changes are retained as I switch from tab to tab within the job step but whenever I exit and save the job, the changes are lost. Any ideas what's going on? I'm on SQL Server 2008.

• Loop Control within a DataflowTask in ETL

  Hi, Being fairly new to SSIS and the ETL process, I was wondering if there is anyway to loop though a record set within a DataFlowTask and pass each row (deriving parameters from the row) into a Stored Procedure (the next step in the ETL phase). Once i have passed the row into the stored procedure, I want the results from each iteration to be written to a Table. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks.
