• OneNote: How to delete a notebook

- by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information I’m filing this under the absurdity of stupid design. Or perhaps, we didn’t really use it ourselves before releasing it. I’m talking about OneNote the metro app. Beautiful app, beautiful concept, until of course, you feel like deleting the default notebook it creates for you. Why would anyone want to delete that of course! Hell everyone would want to! It’s the first damned thing you’d do. How do you delete a section? There is a button at the bottom. How do you delete a page? Well just like section, there is a button at the bottom. So you wish to delete a notebook? There is no button at the bottom. That’d be no fun of course! Here is how, Read full article ....

• Keyboard settings for a Mac+PC world

- by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information I’m one of those weridos who lives in a Mac+PC world. I write code for both iOS and Windows platforms. I also travel quite a bit, and airlines and airport security are starting to weigh your carry ons, and beginning to frown on the powerplant of batteries you need to carry to power SharePoint on an airplane. This means, my main work machine has to be a Macbook Pro, since it is the only machine that can do both XCode and Visual Studio Virtualized and SharePoint virtualized nicely. The problem this causes of course, is you will literally pull your hair out when dealing with keyboard/shortcut differences. So here is my work setup, Running Mac for all my normal work Virtualizing using VMWare Fusion – and sometimes I move these VMs to my windows server so I can run them on VMware workstation. Frequently RDP’ing into VMs in the cloud or running on my home server. So, Read full article ....

• Houston We have a Problem with Silverlight Client OM…

- by MOSSLover
So I was playing around with NavigationNodeCollection, which is basically like SPNavigationNodeCollection just to make sure it worked without a hitch…Here is a little sample snippet of what should work: Unfortunately, you get a nice little javascript error that does not allow you to access the child nodes. I tried a foreach() loop that gets a NavigationNode for each parent then loops through the NavigationNode.Children that did not work either. I threw in two ExecuteQueryAsync statements thinking that would help, unfortunately adding a second statement provides no different results. This appears to be a bug in the Silverlight Client Object Model. I reported the error. Hopefully, we get a fix by RTM so that we can use the easier method to get items into Silverlight, otherwise it’s back to WCF and cross domain policies. We all love cross domain policies right? • Can web applications running on IIS7 Windows Server 2008 R2 be forced to immediately detect changes to hosts file?

- by Brenda Bell
We have several web applications running on several load-balanced servers. We want to have our web applications communicate with each other without first traversing outside the load balancer. For example: http://appA.example.com is running on 192.0.2.1 and 192.0.2.2 http://appB.example.com is also running on 192.0.2.1 and 192.0.2.2 The load balancer's public IP address is 198.51.100.3 By default, when appA on 192.0.2.1 makes a call to a WCF service hosted in appB, the HTTP request is routed to 192.51.100.3; this establishes a new session and the load balancer will direct the call to either of the two servers We want the call to be routed to the instance of appB running on the same server so we add 192.0.2.1 appB.example.com to the hosts file on 192.0.2.1. This eventually works, but we either have to wait for the app pool to naturally recycle or do a manual reset before appA sees the new address. Is there any way to have the change automatically detected without having to recycle the app pool?

• The perfect RDP experience from Mac to Windows

- by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information For the reasons I mentioned in my keyboard remapping blog post, I live in a Mac+PC world. This means, I find myself frequently RDP’ing to Windows Machines from my Mac. And yes, that Metro UI on RDP is even more frustrating than it is without RDP. Mac is a different OS than Windows (duh!), and the way it handles multiple screens and spaces is entirely different from windows. This means, RDP experiences are tough to make 100% seamless. You can see the frustrations in the various reviews on the Microsoft RDP app on the Mac app store. It can be difficult to find the perfect settings for the perfect user experience. Well, here they are - Read full article ....

• Security settings for this service require 'Basic' Authentication

- by Jake Rutherford
Had an issue calling WCF service today. The following exception was being thrown when service was called:WebHost failed to process a request. Sender Information: System.ServiceModel.ServiceHostingEnvironment+HostingManager/35320229 Exception: System.ServiceModel.ServiceActivationException: The service '/InteliChartVendorCommunication/VendorService.svc' cannot be activated due to an exception during compilation. The exception message is: Security settings for this service require 'Basic' Authentication but it is not enabled for the IIS application that hosts this service..Ensured Basic authentication was indeed enabled in IIS before getting stumped on what actual issue could be. Turns out it was CustomErrors setting. Value was set to "off" vs "Off". Would have expected different exception from .NET (i.e. web.config parse exception) but it works now either way.

• Build & Deployment Guide for Service Bus Relay Project

- by Michael Stephenson
Ive recently published a sample guide based on a real-world project where we implemented an on-premise WCF routing solution to connect SAAS applications to our on premise line of business applications. The guide will discuss: How we configured and setup the infrastructure How we setup the on-premise server to listen to the service bus What software we used How we configured Windows Azure This contains some useful contextual information around the reference scenario and hopefull this will be very useful to others undertaking similar projects. Ive also included this on the technet wiki page for Windows Azure Service Bus resources: http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/13825.windows-azure-service-bus-resources.aspx

• Q&A: Where does high performance computing fit with Windows Azure?

- by Eric Nelson
Answer I have been asked a couple of times this year about taking compute intensive operations to Windows Azure and/or High Performance Computing on Windows Azure. It is an interesting (if slightly niche) area. The good news is we have a great paper from David Chappell on HPC Server and Windows Azure integration. As a taster: A SOA application running entirely on Windows Azure runs its WCF services in Azure Worker nodes. • How to quantify product work in Resume?

- by mob1lejunkie
One of things I do in my Resume is try to quantify the impact my work has had in the particular company I was with at the time. The reason is it shows the value my work had added to the business. Is this what you guys do as well or am I the only one? In my previous job this was easy as I worked on short/medium internal applications and it was fairly easy to measure end result. For example, external consulting company quoted $50,000 for an application Business Services department wanted I completed it in 3 days so I say I saved the company $48,000. I have been in my current job for 3 years but all of it has been on 1 single well established product. About 30% work is maintenance and 70% work is on new modules. I have worked on various modules like API (WCF), Security (2 factor authentication), etc. How should I quantify work on modules? Many thanks.

• Disable mobile page redirection for SharePoint 2013

- by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information SharePoint 2013 (foundation too), detects requests from mobile devices and automatically changes the uRL of the requested non mobile page to its mobile substitute. This logic is now built into SPRequestModule. The mobile view is pretty damned amazing. Even though the set of pages for mobile access is completely different, SharePoint has an entirely separate set of controls for the mobile pages. These are in the Microsoft.SharePoint.MobileControls namespace which inherit from Microsoft ASP.NET controls in the System.Web.UI.MobileControls namespace. These Mobile pages can even use mobile Web Part adapters to mimic the behavior of webparts on mobile webpart pages. Read full article ....

• Figuring our complex REST queries for SharePoint

- by Sahil Malik
SharePoint 2010 Training: more information A little while ago, I showed the REST query for a relatively complex query. Some readers have emailed me about how to figure out further queries, and especially for complex insert/delete/update scenarios. Well it is quite easy to figure out almost any query for SharePoint REST API. Okay, this is not just about SharePoint – you can apply what you read here for any REST API interface supported by Microsoft, like WCF data services. But, sometimes when you have many columns, or complex update operations, or are working with weird providers, it is tough to figure out the specific HTTP request you need to craft, error free, using REST. Well fear not, there is hope. As an example, what I did is, I created a SharePoint site at http://sp2010.winsmarts.internal/sampledata with 3 lists in it - 1. • Spaces in type attribute for Behavior Extension Configuration Issues

- by Shawn Cicoria
If you’ve deployed your WCF Behavior Extension, and you get a Configuration Error, it might just be you’re lacking a space between your “Type” name and the “Assembly” name. You'll get the following error message: Verify that the extension is registered in the extension collection at system.serviceModel/extensions/behaviorExtensions So, if you’ve entered as below without <system.serviceModel> <extensions> <behaviorExtensions> <add name="appFabricE2E" type="Fabrikam.Services.AppFabricE2EBehaviorElement,Fabrikam.Services, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null"/> </behaviorExtensions> </extensions> The following will work – notice the additional space between the Type name and the Assembly name: <system.serviceModel> <extensions> <behaviorExtensions> <add name="appFabricE2E" type="Fabrikam.Services.AppFabricE2EBehaviorElement,Fabrikam.Services, Version=1.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=null"/> </behaviorExtensions> </extensions>

• On-Premises to Office 365: Identity

- by Sahil Malik
SharePoint, WCF and Azure Trainings: more information “Run your business, not your mail server.” I am not sure where I read that, but it makes so much sense! Every organization is moving to the cloud, and some just haven’t started their journey yet. One of the fastest and most compelling online cloud based offerings is Office 365. Available in various SKUs, you can get SharePoint, Lync, Exchange, and Office professional as cloud-based offerings. The subscriptions are as low as $2 per user per month to $20 something per user per month. Also, with SharePoint 2013, if you buy Office 365 subscriptions for your users, you don’t need to buy CALs (Client Access Licenses) for on-premises use. Read full article here. • Get a new instance with StructureMap

- by Aligned
It took me too long to figure this out, so hopefully it will help you. StructureMap has way that will create a new instance of the object every time, instead of storing this in the container. I’m going to use this for the DBContext and for WCF Service references. Since the ObjectFactory is a static class, MVC will have these stored in memory without this. Credit goes to Joshua Flanagan for answering my question.[TestMethod] public void GetConcreteInstanceOf_ShouldReturn_DifferentInstance() { ObjectFactory.Initialize(registry => { // set it up so that it's new every time // use this for DBContext and service references registry.For<ISystemDataService>().Use(() => new SystemDataService()); }); ISystemDataService result = Resolver.GetConcreteInstanceOf<ISystemDataService>(); ISystemDataService result2 = Resolver.GetConcreteInstanceOf<ISystemDataService>(); Assert.AreNotSame(result, result2); }

• Good technologies for developing a modular server component in .net?

- by nubbers
I am using WPF, Prism and Unity to develop the user interface for a .net application. The UI will run from a PC, but I also need to develop a separate complex server component that will provide services to the PC component via WCF. Prism and Unity have proved to be of great value in creating a modular application, at least as far as the user interface is concerned. I would also like to make the server component modular, but I cannot find anywhere what techniques, patterns and technologies are suitable. I have considered: Unity or one of the other DI containers Selected parts of Prism, such as modules and events Are these suitable for developing a modular server component? Or are these UI technologies only and should I be looking at something completely different?
