• Data transfer to my own computer from a website host by the same computer

  Hi all, I have a question about using a web site host in my computer, say Computer A, using any web server hosting application e.g : apache. I connect to my website in my very same computer A, and request to download a file of size 1Mb, in otherwords, I am connecting to my own computer and want to download a file in my computer. In addition, my internet access is bound by a proxy server in a way of gateway. The questions are - does the file transfer really exist? Or is it a local file copying between 2 location? Will my data packet go through the proxy, to the internet, and go back to the proxy and return to me? Thanks everyone who are watching this question.

• My website is infected with JS:ScriptIP-inf [Trj]

  I am using Network Solutions hosting. I was recently attacked with JS:Illredir-S [Trj], I asked my hosting providers to clean it and they cleaned it and updated all passwords, but now after a week my site got infected again with JS:ScriptIP-inf [Trj]. Can anyone please suggest me how to secure my website properly ? Should I change my hosting provider ? I am fed up of these viruses again and again on my websites. I can't even find this virus in my files. Please post informative answers. Thanks

• Setup asp.net mvc application as subdomain website

  I'm trying to setup a local application on a subdomain on our company server. There is already an installation of sharepoint running on http://companyweb/, but I would like my application to run on http://orders.companyweb/. I tried creating a new website, leaving the IP address the same as it is for http://companyweb, and just changing the host header value to orders.companyweb. However, no matter where I try to access the site from (different computers around the network, including the server itself), I keep getting 404 errors. I then tried setting up a simple index.html and serving that up as the highest priority; however, I still got 404 errors. This makes me think that I have actually setup the site itself wrong. What should I change to be able to access this application correctly on all the local computers?

• Door with keypad that can be controlled by website

  Hi, I'm looking for some kind of the door/system that would allow us to install a door lock with a keypad. When somebody goes to that door they would enter a number that would open the door. The twist is that we need to be able to change the key combination that opens the door from a website. It needs to allow me to programmatically change the key combination required to open the door without somebody physically going there to do it. • Howto manage website and user permissions with apache on Mac os X

  I have lots of different websites in a Development directory in my home dir. While developing, files get saved under my username but websites configured under apache it's permission need to be set as _www user and group. What's the best way to handle this? Do I run apache under a different user/group? Do I run my development tools under a different user? Do add myself to the _www group? (seems like it doesn't work btw) I've just switched to a mac and I'm trying to find a smooth development workflow, so it would be best if i could just run the necessary tools, save some files and be able to test the website without much hassle.   There are a lot of webdeveloper addons available, for Firefox, like firebug. But is there a html editor addon for Firefox. Which I can edit my website. Viewing the edits real-time (using localhost or via ftp?) and saving the edits(CTRL+S) I am currenlty using firebug and it would save a lot of time if I could save the (local) .html file using a firebug like addon!(or firebug itself?) I Found a firebug addon to save .css files... now just need one to save html, and I am good to go!

  I want to setup a website using wordpress, which we can modified locally and then via subversion commit the site and make it public. This means to installing new plugins, changing the content, testing updates of wordpress to see if they work with the theme, etc. The idea is to control the development on the site, in case we need to keep track of the dev or roll back, because of unexpected bugs in a the plugins, theme, etc. I've read this article in codex, however I'm not sure how this is done when, we want to include the content and changes on the options of worpdress and plugins (which is in the mysql).   I would like to know how sites like the following perform distributed website monitoring (from multiple checkpoints/countries). pingdom.com, site24x7.com, uptrends.com, siteuptime.com, etc, etc. To be exact, what process would occur in checking if a given domain name went down? If the server finds that the site is down, what is the next step? Would it make a REST API request to a separate server to run the same test and report the results? I have a few theories, including: utilizing host(s) from different countries utilizing proxies from different countries I'm looking for the most proper or correct way to handle this, which can include the usage of servers from multiple countries/hosts.

• ASP.NET Website not responding

  Hello everybody I am setting with my server tech, trying to figure out what is going on here. When I try to access my site through a browser, my site hangs indefinately. It does not respond with anything, not even after 15 minutes! The application pool has been restarted, the website has been restarted. Doesn't helpt at all. It happened during an upload. A backup has been loaded and the problem is still the same It is a very urgent matter, I hope someone can help me! I think we are on a IIS 6 on a Windows 2003 Server. (Remote hosted, with a tech, who has no idea what the issue is as well, so I am trying to find the solution alogn with him). Any suggestions are VERY appriciated.

• IIS- defining a website as a dev site

  I am new to IIS. Is there a way during the setup of IIS to have a variable of some sort set that I can use to tell my site that this is the development copy? I am using PHP via IIS 7.5 and would like to have a file with a few lines that define which databases etc is used by my application. Is this the purpose of web.config? I would love there to be a place in the setup of the website where I can set a few variables that are accessibly by my application. That way, when I migrate files to live, I don't need to worry about access details to databases etc.

• Windows Authentication Website Asking for Credentials

  I have a website that has ASP.Net Impersonation Enabled and Windows Authentication Enabled. When navigating to that site using IE8 with "Enable Integrated Windows Authentication" (under Tools - Internet Options - Advanced) checked, the browser pops-up a "Windows Security" dialog box asking for User name and Password. My understanding was that this was automatically passed through and I would not need to type in those details. Additional Information: If I uncheck "Enable Integrated Windows Authentication" I do not get the pop-up window and it appears to work was intended (though that is the opposite of what I would be expecting) If I enable Windows Authentication in Firefox I do not get the pop-up window (i.e. works as intended) Are there some settings or similar that could have been set to create this behavior? Or has anyone else seen similar behavior and know how to fix?

• ASP.NET website http requests appear to be queueing

  We cloned our servers this weekend into a colo. All non-asp.net sites are performing great, but ASP.NET sites are very slow. It appears to be an issue with the requests/connections, but I cannot figure out where. The reason I think it is a problem with the connections is that when I launch fiddler and watch the requests, all requests appear to happen sequentially. Even the static image requests are taking 5 seconds and another one doesn't start until the first one finishes. MaxConnections is set to 100 in machine.config and the "website connections" are set to unlimited. Any idea what else coudld be causing this? from machine.config:

• How can I scrape specific data from a website

  I'm trying to scrape data from a website for research. The urls are nicely organized in an example.com/x format, with x as an ascending number and all of the pages are structured in the same way. I just need to grab certain headings and a few numbers which are always in the same locations. I'll then need to get this data into structured form for analysis in Excel. I have used wget before to download pages, but I can't figure out how to grab specific lines of text. Excel has a feature to grab data from the web (Data-From Web) but from what I can see it only allows me to download tables. Unfortunately, the data I need is not in tables.

• Should I split my website into different servers

  I have a website where a user uploads photos, the photos gets resized and thumbnailed, and stored on the server. At the same time, there are some INSERTS into a MySQL table regarding the photo uploaded (like description, user id etc). The site currently runs off a managed VPS, and I love the support it provides. However it is expensive to store the many small photos and the resizing and thumbnailing processes do cause spikes on the app performance. (Amazon S3 is pretty expensive, especially considering the costs for uploading many small files) Question: Will it be a good idea to move the image processing operations and image storage to another server which is an unmanaged dedicated server with a much lower cost/gb and keep the current VPS for its 24/7 support and hosting the webapp? Or should I move the entire site to the dedicated server? • IIS 5 default website (Stopped) after new install on new box

  We just got new boxes at work. Running Xp, IIs 5.1 (yeah I know corporate decision, not mine) when I go look at inetmgr (iis) the default website it stopped. if restarted, I get an error that it didn't respond in a timely manor I ran netstat -an, and -o and saw nothing had port 80 open. cleared my event viewer, restarted iis and restarted iisadmin service (and theirby smtp) no errors in the event log. I ran aspnet_regiis -i jsut in case. Still no joy. I'm stumped. Can any think of anything else to try? Thanks, E-

In my cystat wordpress log, I obtained the following entry IP Browser OS Date Method Type URL 127.0.0.1 Safari 419.3 iPhone July 30, 2009 7:39 pm GET BLOG /blog/ The IP address is the IP of the visiting client. It's clear that this is not possible. Why do I get 127.0.0.1 as IP? cystat bug? some weird network trick I am not aware of? or is my website really running on an iPhone, and the guy at the applestore is reading my blog ?

• Increasing load capacity for growing website

  My website currently runs on a dedicated web server (with LiteSpeed) and dedicated MySQL database server. It's a download based site with a lot of user-generated content, which can be streamed and downloaded, there are also thousands of thumbnails and static content. I'm at the stage where the web server can no longer handle the amount of traffic, so I'm looking a how best to increase capacity considering the large amount of downloadable content. My host suggests mirroring everything on a second web server and distributing the load between them using either DNS Made Easy, or to have my own load balancer (using ldirector) in front of the two web servers. Could anyone advise whether the above method would be the best option? Does any one have any experience with DNS Made Easy and/or ldirector? I'd appreciate any help.

• Serve my website from different server during downtime

  I have a VPS server running in the cloud. Fully automated server image upgrade/downgrade(by RAM/HDD plans). The problem is that server upgrade/downgrade takes time and involves total unavailability during this period(up to 30 minutes). Goal: during this downtime server my website(http://mydomain.here) from different server with some message like "Under construction". How can I do this? -- mydomain.here is hosted on godaddy and uses its DNS(If I call it right). It's pointing with A-record to my VPS's IP address now. Change in these DNS settings will take more than 30minutes, so it's not an option. How can I find mode "dynamic" DNS? What should I learn?

• IIS - Script for repeated hacks on a website

  I currently have a site that is armored by ELMAH as its reporting mechanism. Each time someone hits a URL that is incorrect it notifies me or logs to the system. This is annoying for someone fat-fingering the URL with a misspelling but great when a hacker is trying to crack a site of mine. Has anyone ever written a script for IIS 7 on Win 2K8 that blocks an IP based on repeated attempts to hit a website? I've looked at Snort and other IDS systems but if I could get a script that could be linked to my ELMAH system it might be the perfect thing. PowerScript, etc. is what I was thinking. Hints and recommendations are wonderful and if you think a true intrusion detection system is recommended give me your ideas. Thanks in advance.

• Cant access EC2 hosted website

  For some reason, I am unable to access our website www.doccaster.com (Bad request nginx). We are hosted on amazon EC2 with elastic ip associated to it. The weird part is a) I can access it through the public dns url http://ec2-184-73-195-180.compute-1.amazonaws.com b) My co founder who is located in another city can access it via www.doccaster.com. I observed that my instance was failing reachability check, so I launched a new one and assigned it the the elastic ip. I tried to ping the ip address 184.73.195.180 from my machine but no success. Any help will be really appreciated. More details I ran the following command on my server netstat -lntp | grep -E 'apache|httpd' and it displays :::80 for httpd . Is this accurate ? Should it be 0:0:0:80 ? or doesnt matter?

  I've experienced some kernel panic after trying to compile gentoo kernel for a Sun UltraSPARC T5120 Server. The kernel panic came from a missing support for the SAS disk controller in the menu config. I've wasted so much time because I had no clue about the hardware I was using. I know that the kernel config depends on what you plan to do with your machine but I want to have a configuration file that at least match my hardware ! Is there a website or database that provides menuconfig's kernel configuration files for known or branded hardware like Dell Server or Apple computers ?
