• Wireless Access Point stopped working

  I have a simple LAN set up at home using a Linksys WRT54GSV4 as my primary router and an Encore ENHWI-2AN3 as an access point. I connect the Encore to the Linksys by running a cable from one of the Linksys LAN ports into the Encore WAN input. I originally configured this using the Encore setup wizard, setting the device up in AP Router Mode. It detected the input network and worked about as expected, creating a second network that used my primary network to connect to the internet. It worked fine for about 2 weeks, then abruptly cut out today. I checked to make sure the network was still live through the cable going into the Encore (provides internet when connected to a laptop directly) and that devices are still able to connect to the network being broadcast by the Encore. When I try to rerun the connection wizard on the Encore, I receive the message "No Services found in WAN port." The WAN Settings is no longer retrieving a dynamic ip from the line. I tried providing a static IP, assigning an IP address within the subnet range of my primary router that wasn't being used and pointing the Default Gateway to the Linksys IP, but this did not work either. When I plug the cable into the WAN port, an internet light comes on that is not lit when a live network is not connected. I've tried doing a hard reset on the Encore (held down the rest button until the lights flashed, reconfigured from scratch), but the WAN settings are still not detected. Also tried powering off and on the modem, linksys, and encore. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

• Using command line to connect to a wireless network with an http login

  I'm trying to connect to a wifi network where it hijacks all requests and redirects you to a page where you have to agree to a terms of use before it lets you connect to the actual outside world. This is a pretty common practice, and usually doesn't pose much of a problem. However, I've got a computer running Ubuntu 9.10 server with no windowing system. How can I use the command line to agree to the terms of use? I don't have internet access on the computer to download packages via apt-get or anything like that. Sure, I can think of any number of workarounds, but I suspect there's an easy way to use wget or curl or something. Basically, I need a command line solution for sending an HTTP POST request essentially clicking on a button. For future reference, it'd be helpful to know how to send a POST request with, say, a username and password if I ever find myself in that situation in another hotel or airport.

• Window 7 not recognizing printer for driver (re)installation

  OK I am having this printer problem. I had a user delete her printer. Please don't ask, I don't know. She is using an HP deskjet 6940 printer, and for her desktop she has an HP dx2400, with Windows 7. When I plug in the USB cable it should install the new drivers, but it does not. I believe you guys don't need to know my network setup. I could be wrong. If you guys here at serverfault could help that will be great. :)

• HP Pavilion dv3 volume control display driver on Windows 7

  I've recently bought an HP Pavilion dv3-2150ep and I'm having a hard time getting the volume control display to work as expected. The control is a back-lit touch-sensitive bar above the keyboard. Now the buttons to turn the volume up and down actually do it, but the lightning is not changing at all. The mute button does change color when toggled. I'm not sure if I'm missing any drivers here (I've installed all of those on the HP support page that seem to have something to do with sound and/or display) or if I have to activate this somewhere. Any ideas?

  I accidentally deleted all my windows 7 drive partitions while installing Ubuntu in my laptop.On booting into ubuntu it is showing 450gb NTFs file partition.30 GB drive linux file system partition. so when i was reinstalling my Os with windows 7.i am not able to view my drives.it is showing drivers not found.I have searched the google followed the steps mentioned in this link. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproinstall/thread/d460efd3-eac4-4ef8-b95f-b8208b24f44f my laptop is i3 machine and i changed sata to ACHI.still it is showing same error. • Problems with connecting to wireless network on windows 7

  I have a Dell laptop with Windows 7 (Home premium) 64 bit edition installed on it. I use a Wi-Fi router to browse the net. My problem is, I lose the network connection every 10 minutes or so. The network icon on the system tray shows the refresh icon and the status as "identifying network". The network is fine and works fine with my phone. I saw on the net this may be caused if I have enabled IPv6, so I disabled it but still problem persists. When I look at the event log I see the following entries: "Your computer was not assigned an address from the network (by the DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address 0xXXXXXXXX. The following error occurred: 0x79. Your computer will continue to try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server." I have also installed VirtualBox(32 bit edition) on the laptop. Does anybody any solution to this?

  I have vaio E-series laptop. Recently I installed ubuntu 11 on it. My touchpad seems to be working except the fact that in settings no touchpad is shown. As a result, I can't configure it for edge-scrolling or deactivating it while typing. I have already tried configuring grub (actually it was already configured). I have even installed softwares like 'psmouse-alps 0.11' but of no use. Technical staff of sony blatantly replied that they only provide support in windows..blah... Now, I am really worried if my touchpad will ever work properly or not ... Please help...

  I did install Windows 7 64 bit on my ex. Windows 8 pro Asus x551c "Ultrabook". The CD with the drivers isn't useable since its a windows 8 only DVD-Rom. I got the Wi-Fi and other stuff running and already tryed 3 of the Intel-HD Graphic drivers for win7 64Bit i found with google. No one was compatible with my pc. Any suggestions how to get this running? I hate windows 8 and dont want to get forced to use it.

• Connecting WD World Book to my new laptop using downloaded win 7 driver

  HELP!!! I have just been reading through and seeing that you can connect using a USB straight to your laptop. This would be great is I actually had the cable! My problem is I have a lovely new laptop with windows 7 - I had to buy this as my old laptop isnt working anymore and I have just ordered an external sata enclosure to see whether I can get any inormation of the old drive and put onto my new laptop, so at least I don't lose any work. This in itself will probably present problems as my old OS was Windows XP! I will deal with that when i get to it!! My problem at present is that I have a World Book and I wish to connect and configure it to my new laptop but again I need to download drivers for Windows 7, which I believe I have done, but now I can't seem to work out just what to do next to help these 2 devices to recognize each other and configure. • How to install Konica Minolta PagePro 1300W to Windows 7 64-bit?

  I recently switched to Windows 7 (Home Pro, 64-bit) to discover that my Konica Minolta PagePro 1300W printer no longer works. When connected, Win7 prompts that it can not install a driver for the device. I have done a lot of googling to solve this problem, with no luck so far. From Konica Minolta official website, I can find drivers only for Windows XP/2000. My current reasoning is that they currently don't and most likely are not going to support Win7 let alone 64-bit version of it for this rather old printer. So my question is: does anyone have any good tips on how to make this printer work on my system? Is there any other place I could look for drivers, or in generally, do you know any workarounds that could let me printer work? One of the workaround I have been considering is to install a Windows XP / Ubuntu Linux on a virtualbox and use that system when I really really need to printer. This is of course not the optimal solution, but would let me possibly to use the printer until I buy a newer model.

  Hello, everyone! I have an old Toshiba Satellite 4015CDT, with Pentium II MMX, 32MB RAM, 4GB HDD. It also has one USB 1.0 port, parallel and serial ports, a 3.5" floppy drive and a CD-ROM drive (probably almost dead). I've installed NetBSD on this machine (full install) and now I want to connect it to the Internet. Although it has one PCMCIA modem card in it, it is obviously not an option. I've narrowed down my available options to the following: Connect a USB wireless adapter. I have a Realtek RTL8192 adapter, but although the system gives me the device's name (through dmesg) it fails to recognize it as a network adapter. Connect the laptop to another machine through a serial connection, so that the other machine will serve as a bridge to the Internet. Here is the page from the NetBSD documentation on serial connections. Unfortunately, I was not able to find anything on bridging there. I would very much appreciate your suggestions on the topic.   I am really disappointed with Logitech. My first cordless wireless mouse was from them and it lasted like 5 years. I returned it under warranty and got a new one now 4-6 month later it is on the verge of breaking again.... You pay like $50 for this mouse and it lasts like 6 months that sad. I just lost faith in Logitech mice as I remember my bro also had a logitech mouse too and it broke after like 6 months. But almost all the mice I looked at at futureshop.ca or staples are labeled notebook mice or mobile mice. So not sure what mice would be right for me. I don't want a corded one though. • Arch Linux drops me on my school network.

  I'm running a Lenovo X61 which i carry around my college for getting on the internet at various points in the day. The network has always been finicky but recently it's gotten worse. I'll connect using iwconfig, get an ip from dhcpcd and log in using vpnc to their system. Sometimes I'll stay connected for hours but most of the time within 30 seconds my network traffic will drop to zero and i'll be unable to do anything. My computer still belives it's connected, however to try again i need to put my wireless interface down, put it back up and try again. It's gotten so bad that i've got a window on my computer pinging yahoo or google constantly in order to know if i'm still able to get online. I know other people who have used Arch Linux that don't have the same problems as well as people who use Ubuntu who haven't had any problems either. It seems like my computer is a special case. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix it? dmesg doesn't show anything out of the ordinary going on and i don't know where else to look for errors or other things to try.

• Router slowing my connection?

  I have a Linksys WRT54G and I pay for a 12Mbps connection. I've been testing my connection using speedtest.net for many days and always get 8Mbps. I called the support and they told me to bypass the router and test. I did it and got 16Mbps (much more than I pay for), so I thought "this guy just changed my speed so can he blame my router", and he blamed it. But to my surprise, everytime I bypass the router I get 16Mbps and when I use the router I get 8Mbps. Is this guy trolling me somehow (configuring the VOIP-modem-stuff to different profiles depending o the MAC address connecting to it) or is my router a POS? How can I find out? I don't know what's the thing the router connects to, it's a kind of VOIP adapter; the link is this one, but unfortunately I don't think you'll understand because it's in Portuguese. I know they can remotely connect to it, that's the origin of my conspiracy theory :) I just tested wired to the router and got 10Mbps (and still 8Mbps on wifi and 16Mbps without router) O_o I'm 5cm away from my router, so no obstacles to interfere, right? ------ UPDATE ------- It's a WRT54G V8, I'm using firmware v8.00.7 (will install 8.00.8 tomorrow, but I saw that it's only a minor fix to UPnP denial of service security vulnerability). Results: IPerf LAN-LAN: 80Mbps IPerf LAN-WLAN: 19Mbps (therefore we can ignore wireless issues/settings) I wasn't able to make the (W)LAN-WAN NAT-enabled test with IPerf, I get a connection refused error. I'm not sure if did it right: ran in server mode, configured router to forward that port to my IP and tried to connect to my internet IP that got from this site. I don't think there is a way to disable NAT using this firmware. Question: Let's suppose it's an underpowered hardware issue. Is it right to assume that custom firmwares could resolve the issue because they are possibly better implemented and would make better use of the router resources? I couldn't find any references pointing to wired performance improvements with the use of custom firmware.

• How to use connectify to share files between 2 laptops, one running Windows 7?

  I have 2 laptops one running XP and another Windows 7. Both have WiFi-card installed. I want to be able to share files between these 2 machines and then in next step also be able to share internet connection. I have heard that Connectify on Windows 7 is a very handy and easy tool to set up a hotspot and other machines even XP,Vista can connect to this host hotspot and share files and internet connection. I am able to search for the network (set on host) on my client machine. But how to share files? I don't see any such menu or anything. Also after I have installed connectify on Windows 7, I am not able to connect to internet using data card. It throws error that "Error 31:A A device attached to the system is not functioning". And on client machine, if I connect to data card, as well as connect to wireless network setup by host machine, I no longer am able to access internet, even though the data card is connected. The browser throws error: Please help. Any other utility similar to connectify etc?

• How to update the hard disk device drivers for a ghosted hard drive image so it can run on different hardware: Ultra ATA > SATA

  I've ghosted a Winxp machine from one laptop with Ultra ATA drive, and would like to set it up on another laptop as a multiboot option on another hard driver with a SATA drive. I can install the partition fine but if i make it active and try to boot it it blue screens. The blue screen is so fast i cant even read it, other than to make out it's saying "something", im picking probably hard drive as it goes through POST fine. So basically i would like to boot into my Win7 OS, and then somehow manipulate the XP partition to use updated drivers for the new hard drive/laptop so that i can then at least boot into the XP OS on the new machine and update all the other drivers in safe mode or whatever to get it to run. I assume someone is going to tell me to just do a fresh install, but that kinda defeats the purpose of ghosting at this point. There is a significant amount of personalisation, development setup on the XP machine that i would like to just transfer as is. As it stands ive invested minmal time in getting it to run, just a ghost and recovery and then a blue screen boot or two, so its still well worth it to me, time wise to try this way. Thanks.

• Browsing Playstation 3 from Ubuntu Box

  Hi, My Goal here is to be able to transfer files from my Ubuntu 10.04 box to my PS3 over a wireless network. My PS3 and my Ubuntu Box is on the same home network. These are some stuff that I tried: I can't see my PS 3 from 'Places ? Network' nor other computer that is running on windows. I am still puzzled by this fact. I have not tried ping-ing my PS3. I'll try that later today and post the result in the forum I install PS3MediaServer (http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/). Someone in the PS3 chat forum (http://www.ps3chat.com/playstation-3...lp-please.html) claims that it will enable your ubuntu box to browse PS3. So I downloaded PS3MediaServer, and ran the software. The status tab keep showing "Waiting ...". It seems that PS3MediaServer can't find my PS3. Some how I feel that 1 and 2 are related somehow.Perhaps that there is something wrong with my Ubuntu network settings that is preventing my ubuntu box from looking up other device on the network. I can go to the Internet fine, but I can't see other device on my network. Does anyone have any experience in this area. I would like to hear your experience and perhaps some solution. • Advice needed for a home network setup (hardware & software) to handle many clients and potentially heavy traffic

  I have recently decided to re-structure the home network of our flatshare here. Here's a quick outline of the situation. I envision to have the following 4 devices connected to the router via cable: Xbox 360 IP phone Printer QNAP server (Web, File and Multimedia) We are three people living here, so on top of that there will be to 5-6 computers/mobile devices connecting as wireless clients. My goal is to be able to transfer files (when needed) between the computer and the Multimedia server, which I can reach via 360 and play on the TV. I also would like to keep a high level of security; right now I have the encryption on WPA2 and MAC filtering. I don't believe the web server will get heavy traffic, though I would like to have it responsive. Likewise, I don't have a habit of downloading via torrent etc, but I greatly appreciate my network being responsive and fast, especially when I am browsing or streaming high quality media. Now my questions are: is this setup feasible? smart? efficient? can this be improved somehow? my current router (D-Link DI624) and the previous one (DI-524) used to have spontaneous drops in network, which I find highly irritating. I don't believe in my router, especially now that it completely crashed when I was test-running the setup by transferring a large media file to server while xbox was playing music from the server, and two computers browsing the net. Do I need to get new hardware, if so, any recommendations for a reliable and fast router?

• DD-WRT router causing IP address conflicts across network

  My DD-WRT router has lost its mind! I just set up two DD-WRT routers, one as a WAP (working fine) and one in Client Bridge (routed) mode (the problem). Not long after setup I started seeing IP address conflicts on other machines. The event log always points the finger at my Client Bridge router's MAC address. Neighbour table overflow The log on my router is flooded with Neighbour table overflow errors. These start a minute or two after boot. The network is rather large, with +200 IP addresses being used in this subnet. The other router shows no such errors. Mass ARP requests from 1.1.1.1 I'm also seeing constant ARP requests (with the problem router's MAC address) from 1.1.1.1. Seems like it's bugging everything on the network for its MAC address and then promptly forgetting it (or never receiving a response). Configuration: Model: Buffalo N600 Firmware: DD-WRT v24SP2-MULTI (03/21/11) Wireless Mode: Client Bridge (routed) I'm not sure what configuration details are relevant and I'd rather not have comments flooded, so just ping me in this chat if you want to know something. Why is my router stealing IP addresses and how can I stop it?

• Having trouble setting up my router

  I just moved into my apartment and the Internet connection is working. It's Comcast in case that matters. Anyway, I'm having trouble setting up my wireless router (Netgear WNR2000) to work with it. Are there any settings that I could be missing? I currently have it set up to use a static IP address and I found the DNS servers I'm supposed to use and the Internet light is green, but I can't get out to the Internet. When I am trying, I'm connecting to an Ethernet port on the back of my router. Is there a setting I'm missing or a setting that I have set wrong? I used the automatic set up wizard to learn that it's a static IP address. Any help would be appreciated. I am currently only able to use my Linux machine, so please make any help in Linux commands. Yes, I can connect to the Internet if I connect to the modem directly and I've been using the web interface when I'm connected to the router, so I suppose I can ping the router. My router detected the connection as using a static IP address, so I connected to the modem directly and figured out what my IP address, gateway, and mask were as well as DNS servers.

• HP Officejet 4500 G510n-z Not Showing up in Remote Desktop (Terminal Services)

  I installed this printer on a windows XP machine. First using the wireless option, and later using USB. In both cases when I connect to my other computer (also Windows XP) via terminal services and check printers in the local resources tab it does not show up on the remote session. I used to have a Samsung connected to my local computer over USB and and that worked fine over terminal services. Things I tried so far: I did read this page and installed the software fix on both computers: (Printers that use ports that do not begin with...) I installed the minimum HP software install on the remote computer and that didn't help either. I also tried running the add new printer wizard on the remote computer: I selected "local printer attached to this computer" and did not check the "automatically.." option. On the next page of the wizard I can select an option for "use the following port". I see options for TS001 through TS009 there. I'm assuming those are coming from the local machine. I tried clicking each one and then checking "have disk" and pointing it to C:\3be8dc611b11322e8ddf8a67\i386\msxpsdrv.inf 1 but for every single TS00.. port it says "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware." Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm pretty stuck at this point. 1 C:\3be8dc611b11322e8ddf8a67 is the folder I extracted the HP driver software to after I downloaded it.
