    so googling around it appears that the general consensus is that embedding version numbers in REST URIs is a bad practice and a bad idea. even on SO there are strong proponents supporting this. e.g. Best practices for API versioning? My question is about how to accomplish the proposed solution of using the accept header / content negotiation in the django-rest-framework to accomplish this. It looks like content negotiation in the framework, http://django-rest-framework.org/api-guide/content-negotiation.html is already configured to automatically return intended values based on accepted MIME types. If I start using the Accept header for custom types, I'll lose this benefit of the framework. Is there a better way to accomplish this in the framework?

    I'm interested in exploring how a semi-offline Root CA can be used to update CRLs to the sub CA's. This answer on Security.SE mentions using an audio cable for this purpose. Doe anyone have details on how an Audio cable (or similar) can be used to create a unidirectional path of communication? Since I'm a .Net programmer, I'm also open to code samples, drivers, etc that may enable this scenario.

  • Database structure - To join or not to join

    Hi! We're drawing up the database structure with the help of mySQL Workbench for a new app and the number of joins required to make a listing of the data is increasing drastically as the many-to-many relationships increases. The application will be quite read-heavy and have a couple of hundred thousand rows per table. The questions: Is it really that bad to merge tables where needed and thereby reducing joins? Should we start looking at horizontal partitioning? (in conjunction with merging tables) Is there a better way then pivot tables to take care of many-to-many relationships? We discussed about instead storing all data in serialized text columns and having the application make the sorting instead of the database, but this seems like a very bad idea, even though that the database will be heavily cached. What do you think? Thanks!

  • Scheduling Swingworker threads

    Hi, I have a 2 processes to perform in my swing application, one to fill a list, and one to do operations on each element on the list. I've just moved the 2 processes into Swingworker threads to stop the GUI locking up while the tasks are performed, and because I will need to do this set of operations to several lists, so concurrency wouldn't be a bad idea in the first place. However, when I just ran fillList.execute();doStuffToList.execute(); the doStuffToList thread to ran on the empty list (duh...). How do I tell the second process to wait until the first one is done? I suppose I could just nest the second process at the end of the first one, but i dunno, it seems like bad practice.

    Hi Everyone, I'm building a interpreter/compiler for a school project (well now its turning into a hobby project) and an instructor warned me not to allow mutation of the 'this' binding (he said it was gross and made a huge deal about it) but I never learned why this is so... dangerous or bad. I'm very curious about why this is so bad. I figured this sort of feature could be useful in some way or another. I'm wondering if anyone familiar with building languages can tell me what sort of problems mutation on the 'this' binding can cause, and if they know of any cool or useful tricks that one could do if it actually was allowed. Do any languages that you're aware of allow mutation of 'this'? Thanks,

  • Ubuntu Newbie Needs Assistance!!

    New Ubuntu User Needs Help!- version 9.10 does not communicate with laptop Hello folks, Several days ago, I installed Ubuntu 9.10 onto my Acer Aspire 3100 laptop, running it alongside Widows Vista as a dual-bootable system. Creation of the Ubuntu boot CD went fine, and the installation onto my hard drive was flawless. Ubuntu opens and behaves as I would expect, except for one little problem. For reasons unknown to me, Ubuntu is not communicating with my laptop's networking hardware, and I have no internet connectivity, even when sitting directly under the wireless router at the local library (literally), which puts out a wickedly-fast signal that my Windows Vista OS auto-detects and immediately connects to. Up in the right side of the Ubuntu desktop, I click on the network icon and it does not show a wireless connection at all, even though I am only a few feet from the router. At home, where I use a dialup modem, I also see no means of getting online. My modem is an HDAUDIO Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP,manufactured by CXT (Conexant Systems Inc., file version 4.0.13.0, and the driver version is 7.58.0.0). I desparately wish to convert to Ubuntu. I used Mac for ten years, and then Windows for ten years. Now, after 20 years, I want to live out my days as an open-source Ubuntu fanatic. I am ready to give the old status quo the boot! I am an advanced computer user, but I am not a programmer. I seek a solution that is user-friendly for normal people, something equivalent to a driver that I can easily install or activate that will allow Ubuntu to see my hardware and get me connected. Can anyone help me over this hopefully-little glitch so that I can move on in total Ubuntu bliss? My processor is a Mobile AMD Sempron Processor 3500+ at 1.80 GHz, 1.50 GB RAM, and a 32-bit Operating System. I am running Windows Vista Home Basic, Service Pack 2. My current email is [email protected] if you have a workable solution that does not require programmer status to implement. Surely this must be a simple fix that I simply am overlooking, but being the new guy on the block, I have yet to be enlightened. Thanks for your help in coming up to speed!!     Consider a link to a page for a user's profile. A page is creating that URL like this: //Model.Name has value "<bad guy>" Html.ActionLink("foo, "ViewUser", new { id=5, title=Url.Encode(Model.Name) }) The actual outcome was http://mysite/Users/5/%253cbad%2guy%253e When navigating to that URL, the server generates a HTTP Error 400 - Bad Request. Question: Given that the Model.Name may contain Unicode characters, or characters otherwise illegal in URLs, what's the best way to strip out illegal characters, or otherwise encode them? The problem surfaces when testing out 'interesting' user inputs with < and >, but anything could come from the user, and therefore be put in a URL by way of Model.Name.

  • Is there an AUTOMATED way to pin items to the taskbar in a windows 2008 TS environment?

    We have a Windows 2008 (R2) Terminal Server environment and would like to find a way to automate the addition (Pinning) of programs to the Windows taskbar for our users. My first thought was to do this from a Group Policy, but haven't been able to find a setting for this. I've heard you can 'probably' do it via a script, but haven't seen any examples yet (I'm not a programmer, but have worked with batch scripts before). Please advice. Thanks!

  • Seg Fault when using std::string on an embedded Linux platform

    Hi, I have been working for a couple of days on a problem with my application running on an embedded Arm Linux platform. Unfortunately the platform precludes me from using any of the usual useful tools for finding the exact issue. When the same code is run on the PC running Linux, I get no such error. In the sample below, I can reliably reproduce the problem by uncommenting the string, list or vector lines. Leaving them commented results in the application running to completion. I expect that something is corrupting the heap, but I cannot see what? The program will run for a few seconds before giving a segmentation fault.   • Change Windows 7 start menu height depending on monitor size?

    I know I can change the height of the Windows 7 Start Menu so that includes more or fewer recently used apps, etc. But I have a netbook with a tiny screen that I plug into a decent sized LCD most of the time at home. Is there a way to get Win7 to use a taller Start menu with more items when I'm using the LCD and a shorter Start menu with fewer items when using the netbook's built in screen? (I'm a programmer so capable of technical solutions if there's no ready-made solution.)

  • What is an Ontology (Database?) ?

    I was just reading this article and it mentions that some organization had an Ontology as(?) their database(?) layer, and that the decision to do this was bad. Problem is I hadn't heard about this before, so I can't understand why it's bad. So I tried googling about databases and ontology, and came about quite a few pdfs from 2006 that we're full of incomprehensible content (for my mind). I read a few of these and at this point still have absolutely no idea what they are talking about. My current impression is that it was some crazy fad of 2006 that some academics were trying to sell us, but failed miserably due to the wording of their ideas. But I'm still curious if anyone actually knows what this is actually all about.

    I have a cherrypy app that I'm controlling over http with a wxpython ui. I want to kill the server when the ui closes, but I don't know how to do that.   • Cloud computing?

    I'm an analyst and intermediate programmer working for a consulting company. Sometimes we are doing some intensive computing in Excel which can be frustrating because we have slow computers. My company does not have enough money to buy everyone new computers right now. Is there a cloud computing service that allows me to login to a high performance virtual computer from remote desktop? We are not that technical so preferrably the computer is running Windows and I can run Excel and other applications from this computer. Thanks

  • Sysadmin 101: How can I figure out why my server crashes and monitor performance?

    I have a Drupal-powered site that seems to have neverending performance problems. It was butt-slow about 5 months ago. I brought in some guys who installed nginx for anonymous visitors, ajaxified a few queries so they wouldn't fire during page load, and helped me find a few bottlenecks in the code. For about a month, the site was significantly faster, though not "fast" by any stretch of the word. Meanwhile, I'm now shelling out $400/month to Slicehost to host a site that gets less than 5,000/uniques a day. Yes, you read that right. Go Drupal. Recently the site started crashing again and is slow again. I can't afford to hire people to come in, study my code from top to bottom, and make changes that may or may not help anymore. And I can't afford to throw more hardware at the problem. So I need to figure out what the problem is myself. Questions: When apache crashes, is it possible to find out what caused it to crash? There has to be a way, right? If so, how can I do this? Is there software I can use that will tell me which process caused my server to die? (e.g. "Apache crashed because someone visited page X." or "Apache crashed because you were importing too many RSS items from feed X.") There's got to be a way to learn this, right? What's a good, noob-friendly way to monitor my current apache performance? My developer friends tell me to "just use Top, dude," but Top shows me a bunch of numbers without any context. I have no clue what qualifies as a bad number or a good number in Top, or which processes are relevant and which aren't. Are there any noob-friendly server monitoring tools out there? Ideally, I could have a page that would give me a color-coded indicator about how apache is performing and then show me a list of processes or pages that are sucking right now. This way, I could know when performance is bad and then what's causing it to be so bad. Why does PHP memory matter? My apparently has a 30MB memory foot print. Will it run faster if I bring that number down? Thanks for any advice. I spent a year or so trying to boost my advertising income so I could hire a contractor to solve my performance woes. I didn't want to have to learn all this sysadmin voodoo. I'm now resigned to the fact that might not have a choice.

    Hi, I was thinking about virtualisation and how to explain it to a non-technical person and one of the things that I was wondering was how to explain the way that a VM is isolated and seperate from the phyiscal machine (so I can have a virus on a VM but this would never effect my physical host, right?).     Hello, does the Java Compiler optimize a statement like this if (a == true) { if (b == true) { if (c == true) { if(d == true) { //code to process stands here } } } } to if (a == true && b==true && c==true && d == true) So thats my first question: Do both take exactly the same "CPU Cycles" or is the first variant "slowlier". My Second questin is, is the first variant with the cascaded if considered bad programming style as it is so verbose? (I like the first variant as I can better logically group my expressions and better comment them (my if statements are more complex than in the example), but maybe thats bad proramming style?) and even slowlier, thats why I am asking...   • jQuery drag drop slower for more DIV items

    Hi there, I have got a hierarchichal tags (with parent child relationship) in my page and it will account to 500 - 4500 (can even grow). When i bound the draggable and droppable for all i saw very bad performance in IE7 and IE6. The custom helper wont move smoothly and was very very slow. Based on some other post i have made the droppable been bound/unbound on mouseover and mouseout events (dynamically). Its better now. But still i dont see the custom helper move very smoothly there is a gap between the mouse cursor and the helper when they move and gets very bad when i access the site from remote. Please help me to address this performance issue. Am totally stuck here.. :(

  • Can you let users upload Sinatra apps and run them inside Rails as middleware?

    I want to let users write small custom apps (think themes or plugins on Wordpress) and upload/run them on my site. I'm thinking about using Sinatra apps for this since it would give the users a lot of flexibility, and then running them as middleware inside my rails app. But I can't figure out the security implications of this. I tried creating a simple sinatra app as middleware, and it has access to all the rails models and everything - so that is bad. Is there a way for rack to keep these separate so that the sinatra apps are effectively sandboxed and can't do any bad things (outside of an API or some specific way I setup for them to communicate)? There may be an easier way to accomplish this that I haven't thought of too, so ideas welcome. Thanks!
