• Installing ImageMagick for C(++) on Ubuntu 12.10

  I'm having a hard time installing the ImageMagick software for Ubuntu 12.10. So, I want the C and C++ API, not much more. Now when I go to imagemagick.org, they have a binary package for unix, namely an rpm. When I download and launch it, RPM complains that firstly I should be using alien, and secondly there are like 10000 missing dependencies. If I use alien to create a deb file, and the install it via the software center, the package does indeed install, but only the command line interface - no includes, anything. Same with apt-get imagemagick. (BTW - wtf, they don't have support for ubuntu?) I tried compiling from source (which I shoudn't be doing anyway - I'm not expecting much customization am I?), and then the includes are present, but the programs won't compile complaining about "undefined reference" and then a list of everything that isn't pure C (and I'm using the command imagemagick.org told me to use, namely cc -o wand pkg-config --cflags --libs MagickWand wand.c) so clearly I'm doing something wrong. Any help would be much appreciated.

• About to graduage from good school without any progamming skills

  Not sure if it is good place to ask this question, but found this section to be suitable. I am about to graduate from good school (in the US) with Computer Science degree, having good grades and high GPA. I have no freaking clue how to write a good program, how to properly test it... nada, zero. We were never been tough how to write software. Ye, sure the Comp. Architecture class is important, and I can tell you a lot about how MIPS processor works, and I can tell you about Binary Trees and Red-Black Trees and running time of operations in Big Oh, but it has nothing to do with programming in "real" life. For god sake, none of my classmates know how to use STLs or write templated code !!! To be honest, I found that many of my classes to be waste of time. What should I do ? How to step into real life and learn how to program ?

• How do I know if a particular build has a particular version control change in it?

  Let's say I have a build. I need to know if a particular changelist/commit is present in that build. How would I solve this problem? I can think of a couple of possible approaches: 1) Add the changelist number into the binary so that I can look somewhere in the GUI and know what the changelist number is. I can then use this information to determine if the change I'm interested in is within that build. 2) Tag version control using some string that uniquely identifies that build. What unique string would I use? Is either of these two better? Are there any other better approaches? The solution would have to work for both Mac and Windows builds.

  As a developer I'm used to Subversion for source control and I think it's great for sharing source code between developers. Now thinking about my graphists and game designers, they need to have a slightly different approach I think. They need to share binary files They need to be able to have a thumbnail and preview of their work I don't want to include their binaries into my game repository (would be much too heavy for developer when updating) I've seen that some graphists uses personally created website to share their work but I was wondering if some "standard" application existed in order to provide my graphists a cool way of working together. Is there a common way of dealing with this? Is the way I want to do (only final sprites on my game repo) correct? How do you guys do this as game developers?

• How do I duplicate a Box2d simulation, mid-simulation?

  I want to serialize the state mid-game, send it over the network to an identical computer (same CPU, same OS, same binary), load it there, and have the two games run in tandem doing the exact same simulation, without one of them drifting off and going haywire. In short: I want pop-in, pop-out networking support on my HIGHLY physics-intensive game, where sending object coordinates every few seconds is impossible, due to having thousands of objects, and many clients. I tried this with Box2D, and saving an object's location/velocity/etc wasn't enough... there's internal state that's not accessible through any public methods. My current workaround is to force EVERY client to save its entire worldstate and reload it from scratch, whenever a new player connects... but this is obviously bad practice, because it hangs the game for everyone whenever someone new connects. However, it works, with zero desynchronization. So, anyone know of any other techniques that can help me? Or should I just kiss my project goodbye?

• Nvidia x server setting no specific option

  I just freshly installed Ubuntu 14.04 and did only 4 things: 1) $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:xorg-edgers/ppa $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install nvidia-340 2) sudo apt-get install nvidia-current-updates nvidia-settings-updates 3) Went to Software & Updates/Additional drivers and chosen Using NVIDIA binary driver - version 340.32 from nvidia-340 (open source) I had to do part 3 because after part 1 I had driver version 304 Now to the main part. I cant set up custom resolution. When I had Ubuntu 12.04 year ago there was option in Nvidia x server setting called "Add custom resolution" or something like that and it was alright. Now this option is gone. How can I change/add custom resolution?

• 14.04_x64 / Nvidia GT 240 , HUGE font notificaton at greeter and in naulitus after log-in

  I've been using 12.04 for a long time - excellent version indeed, I decided to try 14.04 today. Installing without any problems. My VGA is Nvidia GT240 (legacy one), Nouveau display driver is fine, font display is normal. Then, I decided to install Nvidia legacy binary driver 304.117 updates (proprietary) instead of default Nouveau display driver. Problems come after rebooting At Greeter a notification "Wired connection 1 -Connected" pop up but with a HUGE font. After log-in HUGE FONT symptom still remains at some parts - for example, Calendar, Desktop shortcut and Files explorer. within few seconds, 10 to 15 may be, there is a screen blink but HUGE font still remains. I have to log out then log in again to have normal font in all parts of system. Changing driver, even an update one form ppa:xorg-edgersnot doesn't solve the problem. Any advices or solutions will be appreciated.

• I cannot log in after theme change

  After changing the gtk-theme in the gnome tweak took I was taken out of the session to the login screen and now I cannot log in. I can only log in using the guest account. So in the grub menu I selected the recovery mode and in the resulting menu I selected root-drop to root shell prompt. Once there I did a couple of things I've found in several pages and in the forums. 1.gsettings reset org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-theme This is what I got: (process:642):WARNING: Command line 'dbus-launch –autolunch=4438d024dd45ef7fb2d3f4ab0000000f –binary-syntax --close-stderr' exited with non-zero exit status 1: Autolaunch error: X11 initialization failed.\n and nothing changes 2.gconftool-2 --type=string -s /desktop/gnome/interface/gtk_theme Radiance with this I was trying to change the gtk theme to the Radiance one. No strange message this time but it did not work either. I still cannot log in. Any ideas please?? sssuizaaa

  I am looking for theoretical resources (books, tutorials, etc.) to learn about making sound statistical inferences given (plenty of) multivariate website conversion data. I'm after the math involved, and cannot find any good non-marketing stuff on the web. The sort of questions I want to answer: how much impact does a single variable (e.g. color of text) have? what is the correlation between variables? what type of distribution is used for modelling (Gaussian, Binomial, etc.)? When using statistics to analyze results - what should be considered as a random variable - the web-page element that gets different variations or the binary conversion-or-no-conversion outcome of an impression? There's plenty of information about different website optimization testing methods and their benefits\pitfalls, plenty of information about multivariate statistics in general, do you guys know of resources that discuss statistics in this specific context of website optimization ? • Ubuntu 14.04 upgrade succeeded partially - I would like to use a different mirror; how can I do that?

  When I wanted to upgrade from Ubuntu 13.10 to 14.04 the update manager told me that there was an unresolvable problem with calculating the upgrade. In order to see more details I performed the following on the command line: apt-get update apt-get upgrade apt-get dist-upgrade apt-get install update-manager-core do-release-upgrade Now do-release-upgrade tells me that no newer version is available but the "about" box in the main menu tells me I am still on 13.10. I think the latter is right, as for instance in the "system settings" there is no way to select local menus, which is present in 14.04 (I tried with a DVD, and there it is). Maybe the problem is related to the fact that "apt-get update" cannot get two resources called "saucy/InRelease" and "saucy/main/binary-i386/Packages" from the mirror (mirror.informatik.uni-mannheim.de; 404 not found). I would like to use a different mirror; how can I do that? Any help appreciated, thanks in advance.

  AFAIK, a lot of C++ projects don't allow exceptions and deny them in coding guidelines. I have a lot of reasons, for example, Exception is hard to handle correctly if your binary needs to be compiled by separate and different compilers. But it doesn't fully convince me, there is a lot of projects which are just using one compiler. Compared to C++, Exceptions are heavily used in C# and Java and the reason can only be that Exception are not bringing enough benefit. One point is Debugbility in practice. Exception can not get the call stack in C++ code, but in C# and Java you can get the call stack from Exception, it is significant and makes debugging easier. No-CallStack is not the fault of the Exception, it is the language difference , but it impacts the Exception usage. So what's the reason that exceptions are frowned upon in c++ programs?

• Where should I start with debugging my exchange server?

  I'm (foolishly?) attempting to install Exchange on top of Windows Server 2008 (64-bit) over Virtual Box running on Mac OSX Lion. Everything went smoothly until I got to the "Readiness Checks" tab. Readiness failed spectacularly on Hub Transport Role and Mailbox Role prereqs. Before I go too far down the rabbit hole in attempting to remedy this, I was hoping I could get some input on where to start in all of this. I already set up the following Active Directory roles, but it didn't seem to help: Active Directory Domain Services Active Directory Lightweight Directory Services I also enabled an Application Server role. Those three are the only roles I've set up-- I cannot locate within Server Manager the Organization Manager role or any of the other roles referenced in the list of borkedness below.   I restarted my slave to change configuration settings to skip reverse hostname lookup on connecting and to enable the slow query log. I edited /etc/my.cnf making only these changes, then restarted mysqld with /etc/init.d/mysql restart All appeared to be well but when I connect to msyqld remotely or locally though it connects okay a slight problem is that mysqld crashes whenever you try to issue any kind of statement. • Java Process "The pipe has been ended" problem

  I am using Java Process API to write a class that receives binary input from the network (say via TCP port A), processes it and writes binary output to the network (say via TCP port B). I am using Windows XP. The code looks like this. There are two functions called run() and receive(): run is called once at the start, while receive is called whenever there is a new input received via the network. Run and receive are called from different threads. The run process starts an exe and receives the input and output stream of the exe. • VS 2010 Profiling Problem with Signed Assemblies

  I have a website that uses AjaxControlToolkit.dll and Log4Net.dll; When I try to run the performance profiling tool in VS 2010 on it it gives me the following warnings "AjaxControlToolkit.dll is signed and instrumenting it will invalidate its signature. If you proceed without a post-instrument event to re-sign the binary it may not load correctly". Now, if I choose the option to continue without re-signing the profiling starts but the assembly doesn't load and gives an ASP.NET exception.
