• iPhone Tab Bar App With Registration View

  Hi! I'm a relative newbie on iPhone app development but have successfully created a tab bar app with 4 tab bar items. I would like to have a one-off registration page for users to key-in information when they open the application for the first time. The registration page should load before the view with the selection of tab bar items loads. What is the best way to do this? Also, how do I load a UIView or UIWebView before the tab bar items load? Any suggestions and sample code would be very much appreciated - thanks!

  Hi, I'm newbie with webapps and PHP. I'm trying to get a cookie that it's not created yet, I mean, when I try to load a page that looks for a inexistent cookie I get an error, I tried to get rid of this with a try/catch but not success. • What is "Android Activity", what is the difference between "BlankActivity", and "MasterDetailFlow"?

  I want to create an android application using Eclipse Juno, but then i am getting confused of what the "activity" actually is. The first time i created android app project, there was an option that require me to select whether i want to create activity, and if so, i need to choose between BlankActivity and MasterDetailFlow. Also, is it possible that an application has many activities? I think i need some tutorials about creating android application using eclipse, so if you have a good tuts either it is in text or videos i will appreciate it. Actually i am a newbie in mobile apps development, so i wish the answer will be less complex. Thanks in advance.

• 'An error occurred. Please try later' message on Facebook authentication dialog

  I am a newbie who is trying to create a Facebook app using PHP and Facebook's PHP SDK. The app is hosted on Heroku, and the sample app that they provided is working fine. However, I am now trying to get the sample app to work on Apache 2.2, and I have encountered a lot of problems along the way. Well, straight to the point, my latest problem will be trying to do Facebook login on localhost, but the 'An error occurred. Please try later' appears on the popup dialog. This does not happen on Heroku. Will someone please enlighten me on if there's any steps that I can take to overcome this error? I don't think it got to do with any coding error since I am just following the provided sample app. Thanks!

• Generated PersonController expects Authority to contain word ROLE

  I'm brand new to acegi and relatively new to Grails. I just followed the tutorial to set up a new role and a new user. Every time I saved the user (with a role checked), it saved the user information fine, but not the role associated with the user. I finally dug into the controller code that was generated, and noticed this: private void addRoles(person) { for (String key in params.keySet()) { if (key.contains('ROLE') && 'on' == params.get(key)) { Authority.findByAuthority(key).addToPeople(person) } } } So to be sure I was interpreting it correctly, I added the word ROLE to my authorties, and it worked like a charm. Am I missing something obvious, is this a bug, or.......? The examples showed simple role names like "user" or "manager".

  Hey, I'm a relative newbie to programming. I've picked up some very basic Java (File I/O, GUIs, inheritance) and would like to take a look at functional programming - in particular, I would like to learn Scheme. I'm having some trouble finding a Scheme implementation I can understand. Interpreters are weird; I'm not sure how to save my programs and create executables. I've downloaded PLT Scheme, but I would prefer using something less condescending, something similar to NetBeans. Is there a plugin or tool that will allow me to quickly and easily create and manage Scheme programs? All help is appreciated!

• Why is Python 3.1.3 in the header listed as a syntax error?

  Hi, I'm a newbie programmer so I'll do my best to clearly ask my question. I'm running Python scripts in Mac 10.6.5 and now trying to write and save to a text file (following instructions in HeadsUp Python book). Whenever I hit function+F5 (as instructed) I get the same "invalid syntax" error and Idle highlights the "1" in "Python 3.1.3" of the header. Here's the header to which I'm referring: Python 3.1.3 (r313:86882M, Nov 30 2010, 09:55:56) [GCC 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5494)] on darwin Type "copyright", "credits" or "license()" for more information. Extremely frustrating. I've checked and rechecked the code but this doesn't seem to be code related because the "syntax error" is in regards to the header text that posts in every Idle/Python session. Help anyone? • Rails: What's the suggested approach to retrieve xml from an outside source

  Rails newbie (though long time programmer) here. I'm writing an test app that retrieves data from several outside sources (think Twitter, RSS feeds, etc.) and under certain circumstances, it stores that data in a db (or presents it to the user). The data model and the views are trivial. What I'm having difficulty with is making the actual xml HTTP call to the outside source and deserialize the xml response so I can query/use it in my controller/helper. What library/gem should I use to accomplish this? I tried looking this up around the net, but only came up with some article from 2006 which, knowing how fast Rails has developed, might well be completely deprecated. Your help is much appreciated.

• Getting 'choice' to work in Highline Ruby Gem without error and getting variable from it

  I'm having a couple of problems using Highline in Ruby, and trying to get the choice element, detailed here, to work. At the moment the following code produces the error "error: wrong number of arguments (0 for 1). Use --trace to view backtrace" How do I get the variable out of choice? At the moment I have the 'do' setup, but I have no idea about how to get the variable the user has chosen out and into a variable for use elsewhere.   Hello- I am a newbie in Bash and I am doing some string manipulation. I have the following file among other files in my directory: jdk-6u20-solaris-i586.sh I am doing the following to get jdk-6u20 in my script: myvar=`ls -la | awk '{print $9}' | egrep "i586" | cut -c1-8` echo $myvar but now I want to convert jdk-6u20 to jdk1.6.0_20. I can't seem to figure out how to do it. It must be as generic as possible. For example if I had jdk-6u25, I should be able to convert it at the same way to jdk1.6.0_25 so on and so forth Any suggestions?

  Newbie CSS question. I thought 'width:auto' for a display:block element meant 'fill available space'. However for an <input> element this doesn't seem to be the case. For example: <body> <form style='background-color:red'> <input type='text' style='background-color:green;display:block;width:auto'> </form> </body> Two questions then: Is there a definition of exactly what width:auto does mean? The CSS spec seems vague to me, but maybe I missed the relevant section. Is there a way to achieve my expected behaviour for a input field - ie. fill available space like other block level elements do? Thanks!

• Forward traffic between two VLANs.

  I have a small network with two VLANs. One is our internal network for basic file sharing, etc and the other is a public wifi network for our customers. The internal network is configured as 192.168.1.x and the public wifi is 192.168.11.x. We have one printer at 192.168.1.50. I would like to be able to have that printer available to our customer at 192.168.11.50. I suspect it can be done with iptables, but I'm brand new to it and I just can seem to work out the syntax. Can anyone offer any help? Oh, this is all running on a wrt54g router running Tomato.

• Stacking multiple slideshows using Jquery

  Hi, JQuery newbie here! I'm having difficulty stacking more than one slideshow with each it's own individual controls. The one slideshow works just fine.   I am a newbie in C and I would like to get the elements of an array with a function, I have tried different options, but I still do not get the elements. My function is: void getelements(int *a, int cl) { int *p; for (p=&a[0];p<&a[cl];p++) { printf("%d\n",*p); } } I know that the solution should work like that, but it only prints the first element and then memory positions. • iPhone real memory climbs when interacting with UI

  I've been using the Activity Monitor to check the memory usage of my iPhone apps. I've noticed that the Real Memory climbs whenever I interact with the UI in any way, even if there's no code being called. For example, I can create a brand new View-Based application and run it, and as I click or drag in the empty window the Real Memory increases even though the app isn't responding in any way. I get that the view controller is doing some stuff in the background to interpret my interactions, but it seems like the memory should go back down after a second or so. Instead, it keeps going up and up and up as long as I keep clicking or dragging. I can wait forever and it never decreases. This is a little disturbing. Am I missing something?

• Embedded YouTube video slows down page load

  Hi, total newbie here - trying to figure out how to make a page load faster with 1 embedded YouTube video on it - a very modest page takes an extra 5 seconds to completely load with the YouTube player showing up. I'd either like the page to load first or to only load the video when user clicks on it - don't know how to do that.. • Beginners PHP / mySQL question

  I'm brand new to PHP & MySQL, and one function I'm creating needs to access a large table or database. I've created the database and it's currently in a MySQL table, which I'm accessing with no problem. The table is 11,000 rows in length, with 8 columns (all text less than 8 characters long) - it's static, and will never change. Without getting too particular, my users will hit a button which will trigger scripts to access the data, say 500 times or more. So in general would it be better practice to include all of this data in a big 'switch' or 'if... then' conditional right in my scripts, rather than opening and accessing the database connection hundreds, or maybe even thousands of times? It just seems like that might be a bottleneck waiting to happen. Thanks!

Meaning there would be multiple versions of the master app but with customization per client. example 200 of our clients get the master app and then can customize it (text and images only via web) Will Apple allow something like this? Is there another way to get around this distribution model? However, trying to go to /resources/tags does not work. To get around this, I added more mappings as: match 'resource_links/tag/:tag(.:format)' => 'resource_links#tag', :via => :get, :as => 'resource_links_tagged', :constraints => {:tag => /.*/} match 'resource_links/tags' => 'resource_links#tags', :via => :get, :as => 'resource_links_tags' Is there any way I can get /resources/tags to be mapped to /resource_links/tag?

• ActiveRecord validates... custom field name.

  I would like to fix up some error messages my site generates. Here is the problem: class Brand < ActiveRecord::Base validates_presence_of :foo ... end My goal is to make a message "Ticket description is required" instead of "Foo is required" or may not be blank, or whatever. The reason this is so important is because lets say previously the field was ticket_summary. That was great and the server was coded to use that, but now due to crazy-insane business analysts it has been determined that ticket_summary is a poor name, and should be ticket_description. Now I don't necessarily want to have my db be driven by the user requirements for field names, especially since they can change frequently without functionality changes. Is there a mechanism for providing this already?
